We respect your privacy. Unsubscribe at any time.

    METHOD

Step 1: Create the Oreo base. You will need a blender to turn the Oreo Cookies into powder. Unwrap all three packets to give you 33 cookies and add them to the blender. Once all the cookies have been cut up and resemble dirt, add the melted butter to the Oreo mixture. This will form a dough to create the crust for the tart.

Step 2: Add the Oreo dough to the tart pan (make sure to have a tart pan with a removable bottom). Press the Oreo dough into the tart pan to cover all the bottom and the sides of the tart.

Step 3: Once the dough is all spread out into the tart pan, put it in the freezer for 15 minutes. Don’t leave for longer than 15 minutes. After 15 minutes put the tart pan in the fridge so that you can work on the blackberry mousse filling.

Step 4: Creating the blackberry mousse. Add blackberries into the blender until they are pureed, then add the cream cheese, sugar and vanilla essence until it is a smooth consistency. You might need to stop the blender and stir some ingredients around to ensure all is mixed correctly and there are no lumps.

Step 5: Whip the cream until firm in a separate bowl.

Step 6: Hydrate the gelatin sheets.

Step 7: Heat milk in the microwave but not to boiling (needs to be hot). Make sure to drain the gelatin sheets and then add them to the hot milk and stir until they have dissolved into the milk.

Step 8: Add the milk to the blackberry puree and mix until all is combined well.

Step 9: Pour into the bowl with the whipped cream and carefully mix well folding over slowly to mix using enveloping movements.

Step 10: Pour the blackberry mouse into the tart pan and smooth out the mixture to make sure it sets with no lumps or bumps on the top of the tart.

Step 11: Refrigerate the tart for at least 4 hours (preferably overnight) to set.

The stunningly gorgeous No-Bake Oreo Blackberry Mousse Tart cut and ready to eat!

Once the mousse is set you can safely remove the tart from the pan. If you have some difficulty removing your tart from the pan The Cozy Plum has a great instructional video that might help.

YUMMY! It looks so fantastic…Don’t you just want a slice?

Decorate with: Blackberries, blueberries, nuts, dark chocolate, raspberries or whatever takes your fancy. Serve with fresh cream or ice cream.

    Enjoy this gorgeous treat!

    POST FEAST REVIEW

I was seriously blown away by how ridiculously easy this tart was to whip up! I mean, no cooking at all—just some fridge and freezer magic, and bam! Talk about a turbo-speed dessert! And the taste? Oh, boy, let me tell you—it was a mouthful of pure creamy goodness with that punchy blackberry zing. But guess what? Not only did it taste like a dream, but it also looked like a showstopper! Seriously, it’s a double win when delicious meets stunning!

The added blackberries, blueberries and flowers make this no-bake tart look magical.

    WOULD I MAKE THIS AGAIN?

Oh, heck yes! This tart was an absolute flavour bomb and a sight for sore eyes! But you know what? I’m already brainstorming some wild ideas for the next round. Picture this: a funky dance of colours in the mousse—maybe a raspberry rave or a mixed berry bash with blackberries and blueberries. I’m aiming for this majestic deep purple hue in the mousse that’ll pop against the rich, dark Oreo cookie base. Talk about a visual treat!

And hey, why stick to one big tart when you can have a squad of mini-tarts, right? I’m thinking of snagging some individual tart pans for these bite-sized delights. They’re perfect for those quick, “I-deserve-a-treat” moments.

But wait, the party doesn’t stop there! I’m on a mission to jazz up the decorations too. Picture this: a canvas of melted dark chocolate creating artsy lines, topped with a crunchy medley of roasted nuts—pistachios, almonds, and maybe a sprinkle of other berries for that extra pizzazz. Get ready, taste buds, because we’re about to take this tart game to a whole new level.

    Poké Ball Cake

Got a Pokémon superfan in your life? Someone whose love for those pocket monsters knows no bounds, whether they’re a kid or a kid-at-heart adult?

Imagine their eyes lighting up like a Pikachu’s cheeks when they lay eyes on a Poké Ball cake! 🎂🌟 Have you ever thought about surprising them with this epic creation for their upcoming birthday bash? Trust me, it’s bound to be a hit among Pokémon trainers of all ages!

    ϞϞ૮(๑⚈ ․̫ ⚈๑)ა

Oh, let me tell you about my energetic Pokémon enthusiast! My little guy adores everything about Pokémon, especially collecting those coveted cards. So, when his birthday rolled around, there was no surprise when he demanded a Pokémon-themed cake.

Now, I pondered for a moment, scratching my head (figuratively, of course!), and then it hit me like a Pikachu’s Thunderbolt – a Poké Ball cake!

It seemed like the perfect solution to grant my kiddo’s birthday wish, and hey, who doesn’t love a challenge that involves edible artistry? Keen to see the finished cake, scroll down to the bottom of this post or watch the Instagram Reel on this post to get an idea of how it was created.

    Ϟ(๑⚈ ․̫ ⚈๑)⋆

    ϞϞ(๑⚈ ․̫ ⚈๑)∩

    Ingredients

    • 2 vanilla cake mixes (I made it easy for myself and used vanilla cake mixes – if you want to make your own from scratch that is fine too. You can create a chocolate cake if you would rather. Mine was vanilla due to the birthday boy not liking chocolate).
    • 4 eggs (2 for each cake mix)
    • Oreo Cookie (for the middle of the Poké Ball)
    • Milk
    • Butter/oil (I find that oil mixes better, I used vegetable oil but you can use olive oil)
    • Lemon juice from 1 lemon and zest from the lemon
    • 1 Egg white from a very large egg – for the white icing
    • 2 cups of icing sugar
    • Half a teaspoon of water (for the icing)
    • Red and Black gel colouring for the icing (this makes more vivid and stronger colours)
    • Lollies for the centre of the cake (I used snakes and other gummies, you can have M&M’s if you wish or say skittles – the bright colours would look amazing).

NOTE: The centre of the cake was cut out to add lollies to the middle of it. Looks a bit worse here but will soon be covered over with icing and also an Oreo Cookie.

The Poké Ball cake is half decorated. The white icing looks amazing so far.

    Ϟ(๑• .̫ •๑)∩

    Pre-heat oven to 180°C or 356°F

    Method

    Making the cakes

    1. Grease 2 round cake pans

    2. Mix the cake mix and follow the instructions on the packet. My only changes are that I add oil instead of butter as well as fresh lemon juice and rind from a fresh lemon.

    3. Cook for around 30 minutes or until the cake is golden and when you put in a knife it is all cooked through.

    4. Allow cakes to cool a little before getting them out of the tins

Nearly complete adding the red icing to the Poké Ball cake

    Making the white icing/royal icing

    1. Add 2 cups of soft icing sugar, 1 egg white and half a teaspoon of water to a bowl. Mix well or use a beater to make it more fluffy looking.
    2. If you need to you can add more water
    3. Also for flavour you can add some vanilla essence or a little lemon juice – I decided to just leave mine plain.

    Decorating the Poké Ball cake

    1. Make the bottom of the cake white
    2. Make the middle a thick black line
    3. Make the top of the cake red
    4. In the middle of the black line place the Oreo Cookie with the icing side up. If the icing isn’t as you liked it you can add some white icing to the cookie to make sure that it looks correct.
The Poké Ball cake is finished and ready for the Pokémon birthday party

Cakeover Magic: Transforming Store-Bought Sponge Cakes into a Dream Wedding Cake

Mission: To turn store-bought sponge cakes into a stunning wedding centrepiece.

    Challenge accepted!

Armed with creativity, a vision, and a few store-bought sponge cakes from Woolworths, I ventured into the world of cakeovers to craft a delightful masterpiece fit for a dreamy wedding. Plus, with the help of gorgeous fresh flowers from Fine Flowers in Katoomba, the transformation was truly enchanting.

    What is a “cakeover”?

A “cakeover” is a playful term used to describe the process of transforming an existing or store-bought cake into a more elaborate or personalized creation through decoration, embellishments, or alterations. Think of it as a cake makeover.

It involves taking a pre-made or basic cake and enhancing its appearance or flavour to suit a specific occasion or personal preferences better.

Cakeovers are often chosen for various reasons, such as time constraints, budget considerations, or simply to showcase creativity by customising a store-bought cake to suit a particular celebration, whether it’s a wedding, birthday, anniversary, or any other special occasion.

    The Quest for Cake Perfection

    Step 1: Cake Acquisition
A trip to my local Woolworths store presented an array of sponge cake options. Opting for simplicity, I chose plain sponge cakes – the perfect blank canvas for my cakeover project.

    Step 2: Visionary Designs
Inspiration struck as I envisioned a multi-tiered cake exuding elegance. With a touch of whimsy in mind, fresh flowers were to be the pièce de résistance. The flowers allowed for a touch of colour and made the cake look so pretty.

    Step 3: Assembly Time
Stacking the sponge cakes, I sandwiched them with layers of luscious cream and fresh Panama passionfruit from Todarello’s Katoomba Village Fruit Market. The passionfruit gave a great flavour and added a summer feel to the wedding cake.

    Creating the white icing

Mix the below ingredients in a bowl. You can mix with a fork or a mixer to ensure you get fluffy icing.

    • 2 cups of icing sugar
    • 2 egg whites
    • A few drops of lemon juice
    • A teaspoon of vanilla essence

Once all cakes are staked then ice all the cake as smoothly as you can. Use a scraper to have the icing on the cake look smooth and if you have parts of the sponge cake showing that is fine, this will allow you to have the naked cake look. If you don’t want the naked cake look make sure to cover the cake with the white icing and smooth it out with the scraper. If you want a wavy pattern, you can have a scraper that will do that too.

The scrapers I used for my cakeover wedding cake.

    Step 4: The Flourishing Finish
Here’s where the magic truly unfolded. Fresh blooms from Fine Flowers in Katoomba were carefully placed atop the cake tiers, infusing vibrant colours and natural beauty into the creation. The flowers were added with paper straws to make sure the stem wasn’t put into the cake. The flowers would then be easily removed to allow the cake to be cut for serving.

I put the flowers on one side of the top of the cake and then on an angle to have some flowers on the bottom of the cake. This allowed more decoration for the top of the cake if needed. I also added a gold “love” cake topper.

Flowers were put in paper straws to then add to the cake

I adore visiting Fine Flowers in Katoomba. They always have stunning flowers that put a smile on my face.

    The Splendor of Cakeovers

    Personal Touches
Though the base was store-bought, the personalised touch came through the decorations. The flowers’ choice, arrangement, and overall design spoke volumes about the couple’s style and taste.

    Budget-Friendly Brilliance
By utilising ready-made cakes, the focus shifted from baking stress to creative embellishment, ensuring a stunning outcome without breaking the bank.

    Time-Efficient Elegance
Crafting a cakeover was a swift process, perfect for those in need of a last-minute, yet spectacular, dessert for a special occasion like a wedding.

    Lessons Learned & Tips Shared

    • Be Resourceful: Embrace store-bought items as a canvas for your creativity. A little transformation can yield exceptional results.
    • Freshness is Key: Utilise fresh flowers or edible decorations for an instant upgrade to the cake’s aesthetics.
    • Keep it Simple: Sometimes, simplicity speaks volumes. Focus on a few key elements for a striking overall effect.
    • Practice Patience: Attention to detail is crucial. Take your time arranging the decorations to achieve the desired look.

    Conclusion

With a stroke of creativity and a sprinkle of resourcefulness, a store-bought sponge cake evolved into a mesmerizing wedding centerpiece. The cakeover journey not only showcased the potential of simple elements but also highlighted the beauty of personalisation and affordability in crafting a memorable dessert. So, whether it’s a wedding or any special occasion, remember, a store-bought cake can be the perfect canvas for your cakeover dreams!

    Costs

So what are the costs associated with creating a cakeover wedding cake?

It might not surprise you that a cakeover will really save you money and still create a yummy and fantastic-looking cake for your special day.

You will see from the table below that creating a wedding cake from an existing cake is the cheaper option.

A simple search online found that if you had a cake that had four tiers and above you would generally pay between $420 – $650.

    2 x Woolworths Double Unfilled Sponge 460g$12.00 ($6 each)
    Icing$2.50
    Flowers$13.00
    Cream$2.80
2 egg whites$1.25 (based on 6 eggs that cost $3.75)
    Panama passionfruit$4.60 ($2.30 each)
    Icing scraper$4.40 (VIP Spotlight price)
Love cake topper decoration $11.20 (VIP Spotlight price)
    Total:$51.75
The stunning cakeover wedding cake is decorated and ready for the cake topper

If you already had eggs, icing, the icing scraper or didn’t want the love cake topper decoration (all of this would take $19.35 off the amount above) the new cost of the cake would be: $32.40

As you see, you can make the cake cheaper if you wish.

The flowers make this cake look so pretty

“Pink chrysanthemums represent longevity, attraction, and romance, making them a great choice for a first date or a new love. In general, chrysanthemums are believed to represent happiness, love, longevity, and joy.”

    https://blossmcart.com/blog/chrysanthemum-meaning-and-symbolism/

Pink Roses mean Happiness, Grace, and Thankfulnes

Perfect flowers for a wedding cake!

    If I Was a Man

I’ve recently been on the job hunt. It was stressful and very depressing.

    Why you ask?

Well, I was getting questions that shouldn’t be asked at all. The questions fell into the following topics:

    1. Parental status inquiries: Seriously, why is this even a thing? Last time I checked, my ability to do the job wasn’t determined by my offspring count.
    2. Postcode obsession: Just to be clear, when I mention my postcode, I’m not sending out invites for a neighbourhood block party. Let’s keep the focus where it belongs—on my qualifications, not my street address.
    3. The sad reality of job hunting for women: It’s like navigating a minefield of sexism and discrimination at every turn. From biased questions to unequal treatment, it’s a frustrating journey.

It all boils down to one thing: Can you do the job, rock those skills, and bring a can-do attitude? Not your sex, postcode, or parental status matters here.

“If you exclude 50% of the talent pool, it’s no wonder you find yourself in a war for talent.” Theresa J. Whitmarsh, Executive Director of the Washington State Investment Board. Image sourced from https://www.weforum.org/agenda/2016/03/quotes-on-women-at-work/

Ah, picture this scenario: Imagine being nestled amidst the serene beauty of the Blue Mountains, where kangaroos might just be your neighbours and the sound of a kookaburra’s laugh is your morning alarm. That’s where our story begins!

So, there I was, having a chat with a recruiter who seemed to think that commuting from the tranquil mountains to bustling North Sydney was like attempting to teleport to Mars. “Sorry, darling, but that commute just ain’t happening!” she exclaimed as if the concept of travel beyond the hills was a mythical tale.

And oh, the fun didn’t stop there! The recruiter, bless her heart, seemed convinced that being a mum meant I could only handle jobs on a part-time basis, as if my superpower was limited to juggling the house and kids instead of full-time work. But hey, I proudly declared, “Yes, I am on the lookout for a full-time gig!”

I even tried to reassure her that hopping on a train was as easy as snagging the last lamington at a bake sale, but she just couldn’t let go of her travel woes. It was like convincing a koala that eucalyptus leaves are so last season!

Then came the kicker: the whole “working from home” debate. When I floated the idea, it was like suggesting we paint the Sydney Opera House hot pink – a firm no-go. But lo and behold, after bidding adieu and sending a polite email, suddenly the tune changed. Flexibility? In this economy? Who would’ve thought!

But alas, despite the picturesque backdrop of the mountains and the potential for work-life balance, something just didn’t sit right. Call it intuition or maybe just good old-fashioned common sense, but diving deeper into the interview process only led to a virtual face-off with the rudest of interviewers.

This Zoom encounter felt more like a scene from a comedy of errors, with the interviewer tossing insults and criticisms like confetti at a parade. It was as if she couldn’t fathom that a mountain mum could also be a professional powerhouse. But hey, I stood my ground, reminding her that qualifications and skills don’t come with a gender bias.

In the end, it was a tale of mismatched expectations, a dash of rudeness, discrimination and a sprinkle of disbelief – all served with a side of resilience and a reminder to always trust your gut, especially when it’s screaming, “Abort mission!”

Why is my family life and travel situation suddenly in the spotlight? It is off-topic, wouldn’t you say?

“Any society that fails to harness the energy and creativity of its women is at a huge disadvantage in the modern world.” Tian Wei, CCTV News. Image sourced from https://www.weforum.org/agenda/2016/03/quotes-on-women-at-work/

Not only was the job opportunity in North Sydney glaringly misrepresented, but it also turned out to be a bit of a unicorn hunt. You see, they advertised for a Marketing Manager, but what they really needed was a Chief Marketing Officer to build everything from scratch. Now, that could’ve been an exciting challenge, but the interviewer seemed more interested in building barriers than bridges. The phone interview felt like a rollercoaster of aggression and discrimination, leaving me absolutely certain that if I were offered the position, I’d politely decline.

Now, onto the next adventure in job hunting! This time, the opportunity was in Western Sydney, and I was totally fine with that. I knew I’d have to make the trek to the office, but they did offer some work-from-home days, which was a nice touch. However, the interviewer, another woman (go figure!), seemed to think I needed a geography lesson. She bombarded me with emails and calls, listing off the exact mileage between my home and the office, as if I hadn’t already scoped it out before applying. I mean, seriously, why the obsession with my commute?

Despite assuring her that I was perfectly content with the travel arrangements, she just wouldn’t drop it. It felt like everyone was making a mountain out of a molehill! And don’t even get me started on the recurring theme of being judged based on where I live and the fact that I’m a mother. It’s like people have this preconceived notion that being a mum means you can’t possibly handle a full-time gig in the office. Newsflash: I’m more than capable, thank you very much!

Fast forward to another opportunity: after enduring a marathon second interview that lasted nearly three hours, I was later told that I didn’t “fit the business” due to my location and family situation. Can you believe it? Talk about a real slap in the face!

But wait, there’s more. They even threw in some extra feedback for good measure: You had some B2B experience (they knew this and liked my strategy examples and how to change focus for different products and drive sales) “Your interview was solid, but additional concerns were raised over this being a full-time, office-based role, and travel, and the potential impact this may have on your long-term employment.”

I don’t believe that my location was asked at the first interview and this made them decide to not hire me when they found out where I lived. It’s beyond frustrating to witness how outdated attitudes still hold sway over who gets a shot at what roles. And don’t even get me started on the absurdity of postcode discrimination – it’s enough to make your blood boil!

I found a fabulous and fantastic job. The team have been welcoming and friendly, they are family friendly, and I work 1 day a week in the office and the rest of the week from home. I am grateful beyond words that the universe made this happen and thankful that the offer that I got is a place that fits in with my family and allows me to contribute to the business and my career.

Ah, you know what? Looking back, I’m actually thankful I didn’t land that job. It’s like the universe had other plans in store for me, leading me straight to the wonderful opportunity I’ve recently embarked on. It’s funny how things work out sometimes, isn’t it? (I am very happy with my new job and glad that I kissed a lot of frogs to land a prince of a placement).

As the world gradually scales back on remote work options, it’s becoming increasingly clear that women will bear the brunt of this shift. With fewer opportunities for flexible arrangements, many are finding themselves trapped in a conundrum where finding suitable employment becomes a Herculean task. This not only impacts their ability to earn a living and contribute to their financial security but also restricts their freedom to navigate life’s challenges, such as leaving a relationship while maintaining stability.

While COVID-19 brought about myriad challenges, one silver lining was the widespread acceptance and success of remote work. Leveraging technology, we witnessed how seamlessly many roles adapted to remote setups, fostering productivity and work-life balance. So, why backtrack on this progress? Insisting on in-office presence as a measure of productivity feels archaic, reminiscent of a bygone era when physical presence equated to commitment.

Yet, my encounters weren’t isolated incidents. Almost every interview was marred by intrusive, sexist inquiries that left me seething with frustration. I vividly recall a particularly exasperating exchange with a young recruiter who seemed fixated on my ability to balance work and motherhood. Despite demonstrating my capability and track record, I was continually prodded about childcare arrangements as if my gender predetermined my competence.

And the irony? These interrogations occurred for roles explicitly advertised as remote, underscoring the absurdity of it all. The disparity in treatment between men and women in the hiring process is glaring, perpetuating age-old stereotypes and hindering progress towards gender equality.

The ramifications extend beyond mere inconvenience; they threaten to exacerbate existing inequalities in earning potential and financial security. Women, already burdened by the gender pay gap, now face the added hurdle of limited job opportunities. This not only jeopardises their present but also casts a shadow on their future, especially concerning retirement planning and financial independence.

With two daughters poised to enter the workforce, I can’t help but feel disheartened by the persisting barriers they’ll encounter.

    Questions loom large:

When will women be judged on their merits alone?

Why are skills and abilities overshadowed by archaic notions of gender roles?

And why do women continue to face discrimination at the hands of their own gender?

These questions demand answers. It’s time to dismantle the barriers that confine women to outdated stereotypes and unequal treatment. After all, the strength of our workforce lies in diversity, and it’s high time we embraced it fully.”

If I was a man, how different would my working life be?

As I reminisce about my youthful days, envisioning a dynamic mid 20-something with aspirations as vast as the moon itself, I recall taking a bold leap towards an exciting opportunity in film production. Picture me, filled with starry-eyed enthusiasm, when suddenly, I’m hit with the age-old question: “Are you planning on having kids?” Swiftly, I respond, “Perhaps someday, but let’s hit pause on that topic for now,” followed by a playful reality check to the interviewer, questioning the relevance of such a query.

But alas, did my honesty strike a dissonant chord? Spoiler alert: I didn’t secure the position. This led me to ponder whether I deviated from their expected narrative, or perhaps—here’s the kicker—that question should have been omitted entirely, particularly when posed to women whose talents extend far beyond maternal considerations.

It’s akin to a broken record, isn’t it? The familiar refrain of sexist and impertinent inquiries that echo through countless interviews. I can’t help but wonder, if I were a man, would they have refrained from delving into personal matters? Would my calling out of the off-key note prompt a swift acknowledgment and a change in direction? Or perhaps, in an alternate reality, such questions wouldn’t even warrant consideration.

At times, I find myself daydreaming about a male iteration of myself. Would the spotlight cast a different glow? Would I find myself juggling a plethora of opportunities? It’s a thought-provoking notion, one that may evoke a mixture of contemplation and frustration.

And here’s the kicker: my husband has never faced the same line of questioning in his professional endeavours, nor have my male friends. It begs the question: why the discrepancy? Why are women subjected to inquiries that their male counterparts don’t encounter?

Have you ever pondered how different the lyrics of your life’s soundtrack would be if you were a man? It’s a compelling question, inviting reflection on the complexities of privilege and perspective.

Women are still undervalued and underpaid. I cannot believe that is still happening.

“Australia’s national gender pay gap is 12 per cent. As of November 2023, the full-time adult average weekly ordinary time earnings across all industries and occupations was $1982.80 for men and $1744.80 for women. For every dollar on average men earned, women earned 88 cents. That’s $238 less than men each week.” https://www.wgea.gov.au/

If I were to don the hat of a man, would I still find myself precariously perched on the edge of a weekly fiscal cliff, facing a deficit of $238, dancing precariously close to an annual loss of $6,188? It’s a thought that sets my instincts ablaze, sparking a rebellion against the injustice that demands swift redress. Employment practices persist in squeezing every last cent, and unfortunately, it’s us women who often find ourselves bearing the brunt of these financial pinches.

In my recent jaunt through the job market, I encountered a relentless barrage of forms prodding for my current salary—a figure as irrelevant to the potential new role as a fish on a bicycle.

Would sticking to my guns as a woman in these negotiations mean resigning myself to settling for less? Or under a different set of societal expectations, would they have gladly offered up the industry-standard salary without batting an eyelid? It’s a question that haunts me, one I’m unable to answer as I remain firmly on the side of the gender coin labelled ‘female’.

Echoes of “The Man” ricochet around my mind as I contemplate the state of my superannuation—what whimsical twists of fate might await me had I navigated this world sporting a gentleman’s guise, free from the gaping maw of the gender pay gap?

Have you wondered what your life and career would be like if you were a man?

How about getting treated the same for pay, career opportunities and more?

Selena Gomez takes Social Media Break & Why You Should Too!

Why is it a good idea to take a technology break? Find out 5 reasons why taking a technology detox can help you feel better.

Selena Gomez‘s decision to take a break from social media for the sake of her mental health is a brave and wise choice. While social media has its benefits, such as staying connected with loved ones and discovering new ideas and information, it can also be a source of stress and negative emotions for teenagers, as it has the potential to amplify feelings of comparison, bullying, and isolation.

P!nk has recently shared that she has received hateful and horrible messages in the media over very old articles years ago. The focus should really be on her new album and all the hard work that went into it, however, the media are focused on rehashing things from when she was in her 20’s, just silly if you ask me. The issue here is that P!nk is honest in her interviews and tells it how it is – I find it interesting that if you have an honest opinion even if you say that you didn’t get on with someone and have since made up with that person that the news that these comments keep getting retold and beat up. Honestly, I think P!nk is amazing and love her raw honesty, passion and hard work. See the social media bashing is happening to us all!

I’m a lot older than Selena and I’m an avid user of social media. However, there are times that I look at some people’s images and accounts and get rather depressed. I am sad about how amazing their life looks; they look stunning in their designer outfits, they have an awesome home and have the perfect vacation overseas with their family. Oh how I would wish for that too. I like Selena have purposefully taken a break from being online, removing my phone from being close to me, not taking my phone with me when I am out or not looking at any of my accounts or sharing what I am up to for a while. What about you?

    Teenagers and social media

Firstly, social media encourages teenagers to constantly compare themselves to others. This constant comparison can lead to feelings of inadequacy, low self-esteem, and even depression. Teenagers are bombarded with images of “perfect” bodies, luxurious lifestyles, and seemingly flawless relationships, which can lead to unrealistic expectations and a distorted view of reality.

Secondly, social media can be a breeding ground for bullying. Anonymous accounts and online anonymity can make it easy for bullies to target their victims, causing serious emotional distress. Cyberbullying can have severe consequences, including depression, anxiety, and even suicide.

Lastly, social media can prevent teenagers from developing meaningful relationships in real-life situations. It’s essential for teenagers to have face-to-face interactions with their peers and to engage in activities that allow them to develop social skills, such as team sports, clubs, and volunteering. Social media can be a tempting substitute for real-life interactions, but it can never fully replace the importance of human connection.

My kids have had some issues with bullies online (It is so easy to be horrible to people when you are anonymous, right!). These bullies used fake accounts and created made-up things about the kids to share with their friend groups. All of this was disgusting and horrible and of course not true, however for teenagers or younger kids having this happen is a nightmare. I did try and tell my kids to just not look at the phone and ignore it. Or maybe just delete the app altogether. However, this response was met by the kids saying “my friends will think that we are ignoring them and more!” My response was that if these people are truly your friends ignoring them on the app is not the end of the world, then explaining in real life via a face-to-face will be what is needed.

When I grew up there were no mobile phones, no internet and no social media! The only way to connect was face to face and if you did have a disagreement you would just not play with this person for a while until you made up or it could be forever depending on the relationship or what had happened.

Social media has its benefits, it’s important for teenagers to be aware of the potential negative effects it can have on their mental health. Taking breaks from social media and engaging in real-life interactions can help teenagers develop meaningful relationships, improve their social skills, and prevent feelings of comparison, bullying, and isolation.

Being online constantly can have both positive and negative effects on mental health. On the one hand, it can provide social connection and support, especially for individuals who may feel isolated or marginalized. It can also serve as a platform for self-expression and creativity.

On the other hand, social media can also lead to negative consequences. Excessive social media use can contribute to feelings of anxiety, depression, and loneliness, especially if individuals compare themselves unfavourably to others on social media. The pressure to maintain a curated online presence can also be stressful and overwhelming, negatively impacting mental health, and not a real way of living and being. It would take a toll on anyone to have to keep up with the illusion of fantasy at all times.

Taking a break from social media, as Selena Gomez did, can be a helpful way to prioritize mental health and focus on oneself. It can provide an opportunity for individuals to disconnect from the constant barrage of information and comparison on social media, and instead focus on personal growth and well-being. I for one have felt that there has been a lot of bad news, so stepping away from the news sites, social media and tv reports for me has been helpful too.

Being online all the time is not good for you. A break is a good thing to have.

Taking a technology detox, or a break from technology, can offer several benefits:

    1. Reduced stress and anxiety: Technology can be overwhelming and create feelings of stress and anxiety. Taking a break from technology can help you relax and unwind.

    2. Improved sleep: Exposure to the blue light emitted by electronic devices can interfere with your sleep cycle. Taking a break from technology can help improve your sleep quality and quantity.

    3. Increased productivity: Technology can be a major distraction, and taking a break can help you focus on important tasks and be more productive.

    4. Improved mental health: Constant use of technology can lead to feelings of depression and isolation. Taking a break can help you connect with people in real life and improve your overall mental health.

    5. More time for other activities: Technology can be time-consuming, and taking a break can free up time for other activities, such as exercise, hobbies, and spending time with loved ones.

Overall, a technology detox can help you recharge, refocus, and reconnect with yourself and others.

Have you taken a technology detox? Was it just on your social media? How did you feel after your break?

Yep and I understand the irony of me writing this for my online blog…even if you just take a break from your phone for the weekend, or just during the evenings, it will help you feel better.

    Knee Beards and Other Stuff

You might be questioning my title. Knee Beards??? What the? You say.

Yes knee beards are a thing (You heard the term here first….I feel like now I should copyright it) and it got to a very hairy problem months after Alexander was born. I was still sporting some knee beards. Although I must say my legs are very nice (So I have been told) but having knee beards does not make them look very attractive.

If you don’t know what a knee beard is it is all the hair that grows around your knee region, if you don’t shave for a while it grows longer and maybe with pregnancy hormones this makes things even more longer and weird. Okay, you get the picture now.

A dramatic recreation of the knee beard. Yes it might be a little worse than it actually was but it felt like it looked this bad.
A dramatic recreation of the knee beard. Yes it might be a little worse than it actually was but it felt like it looked this bad.

I finally took matters into my own hands and removed my knee beards but it took me two months of living with them to finally remove them. Why did it take me so long? Well as a new mum to a new baby, finding time for self care is hard. This is even harder when you have other children to care for as well. I cannot just swan in and have a bath and shave my legs. Nope. Sitting or lying in a bath to relax is difficult to impossible. My twins will then want to join me and therefore ruining the peaceful and relaxing state that I was attempting to create.

It was not just knee beards that needed my attention. Some of the other things that normally get waxed have been forgotten about or just left as it is in the too hard basket. My aim is to book time at the beauticians on a weekend this way hubby can mind kids and I can get some things done. After I have had some much needed beauty therapy I can then tackle the pool again in the aim to tone up and lose some of the baby weight.

My hair also needs some attention. I have noticed that it is rather dry and rough on the ends. This is probably not helping the fact that I am loosing hair when I brush or even when I shower. Yes hand fulls are coming out. Maybe this is due to hormones after having a baby? I hope so as I’m getting worried that I might soon be bald.  So basically knee beards are the least of my worries really.

My out of control hair. Desperate to go to the hairdressers.
My out of control hair. Desperate to go to the hairdressers.

I think that I just need to have my hair cut and tidied, and I know it might not be good but a nice colour to jazz up my look might be in order. It would make me feel good and also much more glamorous. As a stay at home mum to three kids now feeling more glam is always a good thing.

Do you get time for a little bit of self care? A mani, or pedi?

Maybe a trip to the pool or the gym? Have you been to the hairdressers lately?

I am so keen to get my hair done I have thought about doing it with the baby with me. However I have stopped myself, I don’t want to be dealing with a crying baby while trying to relax.

This time will just be for me. My time to do something for myself.

Let us know how you fit it all in with everyone’s busy schedules.

    My Laundry Hack

Do you do things at different times?

I find that I look around my immediate neighbours and I feel that I am on a different timeline all together. Is it just me that feels like this? Is it a mummy comparison that I will never live up to, or is my way a hack for mummies?

Do you see other people have laundry hung out in the early hours and you have not got to the washing at all? These early birds are wonderful and are super organised. They have the first load of laundry out, and have taken in maybe one or two loads that are dry, folded all laundry and put them away! (I’m lucky to have it all dry and put out when the heat of the day is at its peak!)

Do you despair at the fact that you are on a different path? Sometimes I do, however I have now decided to work with it.

The despair over doing everything at different times than others.
The despair over doing everything at different times than others.

     How do you ask?

With the fact that I miss the magic drying window with the washing, and of course now due to the dryer not working, I have to have things on the line to dry. Being in the Blue Mountains makes things difficult as many days are rainy and now due to autumn and the impending arrival of winter getting clothes dry is going to be increasingly difficult. (We are going to get a replacement dryer but have not done so yet)

Now here is my brilliant wisdom….. if you are not doing this you will be amazed. After you follow this you will be like the early birds with their laundry on the line super early!

My fabulous hack to make things easier for me:

    1. I do as many loads as I can and hang them on the line
    2. I make sure the weather the next day is going to be fine or at least sunny to allow clothes to dry mostly. If they are just a little damp they come in and can finish drying on the clothes horse in the laundry.
    3. I leave the clothes that cannot come in the house on the line overnight and now I am the early bird who has all the laundry on the line and getting dry.

My laundry on the line since last night. Now I'm the early bird today!
My laundry on the line since last night. Now I’m the early bird today!

What things do you do at different times to others? Do you think it works well for you or does it cause issues? Everyone is different and you need to do what works for you. However at times I wish I was a bit different and I could channel a cleaning goddess. I still think hypnosis might be the way to go!

I have on occasion gotten up early to do laundry and housework, but that is never kept up as I do love sleeping in.  Or whatever I can get that is like a sleep in, kids do throw a spanner in the works here!

Let us know what you do to make things a bit easier for you.

    School Holidays The Smart Way

Kids having fun at vacation care. Image courtesy of photostock at FreeDigitalPhotos.net
Kids having fun at vacation care. Image courtesy of photostock at FreeDigitalPhotos.net

Do you use vacation care? I only used a day here or there, but the last school holidays I sent the twins three days in a week. It has been a god sent. Yes me time in the holidays. Who would have thought, being relaxed in the school holidays. I was not meaning to have them in for three days in one week, however the vacation care provider has great activities to do during the holidays. One in particular was drumming and music and the other was a craft day that was themed and of course carried over to another day.

Due to the kids love of music and of course creating as much artwork that is humanly possible I thought they would love it. It would be a win for me and them. They would have fun with kids, some their friends from school and new kids. While at care the twins will be taken to excursions or otherwise known as different activities for the day. You don’t have to sign up to these excursions but it is only a little bit extra and it makes the day much more fun for the kids.

I realised that I was much more relaxed due to having more me time and also less stressed. In hindsight I did the last school holidays all wrong. I was run off my feet entertaining the girls. Although I enjoyed it I am only one person with limited resources. A care facility can and does organise so much better events and excursions than I can.

Next school holidays I am doing it smarter and booking the kids into a few days of care.

Other mums commented on how relaxed I looked and it was like I went away on holiday. NO holiday on a fancy island or resort. Just the simple thing of having some time for me. Quiet time to allow me to do whatever I wanted. Sewing, blogging, resting, catching up on TV shows, going to the shops that are far away (yes having the kids in care allows me to travel down the mountain and to go to the shops. Fancy going to a dress shop without the worry of kids touching everything!)

So come the next holidays I am going to do it the right way this time. I cannot afford too many days of care, but a day here and there is a great help and allows me to do my own thing. It is a holiday after all. I find it sad that it seems like it is just a holiday for the kids. When is it my holiday time? Yes I know very rarely, but you have to try and find time for you and your mini holidays.

Do you use vacation care? Has it been as amazing for you? Do your kids love it? I love it, but it is mainly due to me being able to do whatever for a day. A full day rather than a school day. YES!!!! I hear you say, where do I sign up.

Centrelink also gives you a subsidy for care so you pay a certain amount but this depends on the percentage for your rebate. If you are interested you can check with Centrelink.  This does make it cheaper and more accessible for all.

    Falling from the floor

Kids are sitting playing on the floor and then in the next minute there is screaming, crying and they are hurt. I race in and try and understand what had happened.

Beware the dangerous floor. Image courtesy of David Castillo Dominici at FreeDigitalPhotos.net
Beware the dangerous floor. Image courtesy of David Castillo Dominici at FreeDigitalPhotos.net

After they calm down a bit I finally find out they have fallen over. YES, fallen while they were sitting on the floor. HOW DOES THIS HAPPEN? Cut legs, hurt feet and bruises. I really don’t get how they can get so hurt from sitting down? Does this happen to you?  This has been happening for years now and it is still making me scratch my head to understand how it happens.

I don’t know if my kids are a talented lot, or if this is something that all kids do? Do your kids manage to fall over when on the floor? What a talented feet have they mastered that they still manage to hurt themselves. I know it is not a skill that is a good thing to have.

I am still at a loss to explain how it happens. Do you have any insight into this? Can you explain why they can fall so close to the floor already? It really is a mystery. Send in your comments.

    Be Led By Dreams

Do you ever have times where things get on top of you? The housework, kids, life and everything else! Currently I have a lot of things to do and don’t know where to start. I am seeing issues and problems everywhere I look, sit or even lie down there are problems! Due to looking at all the problems it is causing me to get angry and more stressed about the situation. Not good is it? No not at all.

Deep breath! AHHHH focusing on your breathing does help make you feel better. Oh and a camomile tea is needed!

Camomile Tea to make everything all right! Image courtesy of patpitchaya / FreeDigitalPhotos.net

I have so many dreams and things I wish to achieve but feel weighed down in the mundane and don’t get a lot done. Today’s wisdom is to focus on my dreams rather than being fixated on my problems. I will aim to work through one issue at a time and be calmer in the process. Harder said than done but this is my aim.

Be led by your dreams. Yes I need to think more like this! Image from Pinterest.
Be led by your dreams. Yes I need to think more like this! Image from Pinterest.

Do you see things that need doing and feel overwhelmed by it all? I know this happens to me. I will try and do one room at a time, and this in turn will give me more clarity to achieve my dreams.

I hope this has inspired you to follow your dreams and not let your problems overshadow your day and focus. Okay, now off to tidy up so that I can then live my dreams.

    Mummy I have a boyfriend!

Boy and girl playing together. Image courtesy of marin / FreeDigitalPhotos.net
Boy and girl playing together. Image courtesy of marin / FreeDigitalPhotos.net

I was told to bend down to hear a secret from one of my girls. She then whispered in my ear, “I have a boyfriend mummy!” Now this boy is answering to the title of boyfriend and seems quite happy about it. My other little girl was close to this boy but has decided she now likes another and she now has a boyfriend as well.

The twins understanding of boyfriends is just friends so that is nice. However I was rather shocked at hearing this news. My kids are just in Kindy. It is only the end of the sixth week and we have boyfriends. What does the rest of primary school hold if this is just Kindy? Should I be worried? I’m sure it is a phase, or I’m hoping.

I know one in particular was sweet on one boy and she talks about him all the time at home. This boy does the same at his house, and I found this out after saying hi to his mummy and mentioning that one of my kids like him. He mentioned it is the one with the mischievous face, I asked if he knew who that was and he pointed to the right child. Weird how that description does sum up this child and he has worked out who is who. Some kids find it hard due to the fact that the twins are identical, but some just know who is who.

When did you kids get a boyfriend or girlfriend at school? Was it just a nice way to say that they liked each other? Or are you worried? I think the girls are just liking making new friends and having boys as mates as well as girls. Send in your comments.

    T Day is Tomorrow

For those that don’t know the T in the title of this post stands for tonsils. The twins are going to hospital to get them out. Yes both kids are getting it done. 2013 has been the year of the tonsils and I am hoping that 2014 will be the year of health and fitness.

As you can see the Year of the Tonsils has not been celebrated, it really was a year to get annoyed and frustrated that again someone got tonsillitis. Having tonsillitis with one child is not as bad as you might think, and they get over it. If you have two kids one gets it then gives it to her sister and so on. A full year of gift giving tonsillitis to each other. As you might imagine it is not a joy to behold, and constant trips to the doctors where now when I ring, they say, “Oh it’s the twins!” I don’t know if it is a good thing to be so recognised at the doctors, what do you think?

Tomorrow is T Day, Tonsillectomy Day, or Ta Ta to the Tonsils. The kids I have been told will be in separate rooms. Not good but that is the way the rooms at this hospital is set up. Hubby has the day off tomorrow but cannot stay the night due to work the next day. I will stay and be there for the girls in case they wake or need a cuddle and reassurance.

When I called to check how me staying over works I also asked what they will feed them after surgery. I was then told it would be toast. I said, “Toast! Why would you feed them that! You do know what surgery they have just had. There throat will be red raw!”

The lady on the phone said that they give them toast so that if they do bleed or have a complication they have it at the hospital. Oh great. My already fussy or should I say extremely fussy eaters will be offered toast after surgery. I’m sure that will not end well.

I’m packing a cool bag with soft cheese, yoghurt and other things that they might be more inclined to eat. I also asked why they did not feed them jelly or ice cream, and was then told that they have not done this in years. Geez, way to make me feel old!

I am very worried and nervous about the whole thing. I hope that tomorrow goes well and the girls don’t get too upset. I hope that all goes well with the operation and they recover quickly. I’m sure they will be fine, however as mummy I am stressing out as I know what they are in for. I had my tonsils out when I was three and it hurt. However it did not cause an issue and I don’t remember it taking that long to heal. My dad was a joker at the time and decided to try and get me to talk. I had to write things down and to not speak. This made mum get annoyed at him and he just laughed. This is one great memory I have of my father, being silly when I was sick.

Wish me luck that all goes well. We all have to be at the hospital for 7am so an early start for everyone. I hope to be online tomorrow but if I am silent I will be at the hospital with the kids. Talk soon.

    Tonsils Your Days Are Numbered!

Yesterday I had to take the twins to get blood taken. Yes you heard that right. I had to get needles in kids to get blood out of them. Not fun and of course I was not looking forward to it at all.

The one child that I thought would have an issue with it all did not. The child that I thought would be okay, was a mess and very upset.  The first child sat with me and was very brave and did not cry at all. I was so impressed about my brave little girl. Then the next child’s turn. She sat on my lap also and she was fighting to take off the band that tightens your arm. She kept on saying,”Take it off me, it hurts me”, “Please stop it hurts!” It was hard to get her to stay still and I was constantly trying to get her right arm under control. What a tough strong girl I have created! My poor little one I really felt for her but we needed to get the blood taken. The blood tests are important so that the doctor knows what the kids would need in case of an emergency.

The kid that was super tough stood there and watched her sister and was fascinated by the needle and the blood that was fed into the test tube. Future doctor me thinks. Well you never know. Maybe a scientist?

After a while the nurses took off the arm band that was making her arm uncomfortable. She then said, “This is FUN!”, the nurse then said she was a funny little girl. She giggled and was a brave little one for managing to be good and get it all done. I hated getting it done but next Monday the 20th of January the girls are going into get their tonsils out. Yes! Let’s hope that once this is done that we will be done with the constant sickness we were plagued with in 2013. Mainly we spent all year dealing with tonsillitis.  I hope to banish this in 2014. Tonsils be gone and the same with tonsillitis. NO MORE!

The girls were very lucky. The lovely ladies at the pathology, gave them a bravery award, stickers to put on the award, and of course a teddy that they each picked out. I was so proud on how they did when they got their blood taken I bought them a Dora doll. This doll now is the current obsession, the doll is the one that the kids can style Dora’s hair. It came with brush and of course the kids have brushed it so many times I am amazed it still has hair.

I am super impressed with my brave strong girls. I am rather nervous about the whole thing, although I know it will be fine.  The kids need to stay in overnight and I would like to be there for them in case they get up during the night. Hubby feels like them being there overnight will be fine. I don’t want them to freak out if they wake up. I know there will be nurses but they might want mummy, so that is the reason that I would like to be there for them.

Have you stayed in hospital when your child/children have had an operation? Did you go home to sleep or stayed at the hospital for your little one? Am I being over protective? I don’t think I care, I think it would be nice for me to be there to make them feel better about the whole thing. What about you?

    Let me know your thoughts.

    The Tonsillitis Curse

I think we are cursed to have tonsillitis. The twins have had it off and on all year and of course they have it again. I know some people are more prone to it than others and I think that is true with us.

I don’t have my tonsils and they were removed when I was three. Hubby does not have his and they were taken out when he was about five. The kids grandad on hubby’s side does not have his, and my Nana the kids GG (Great Grandmother) does not have hers. So maybe it is genetic that we cannot deal with infections with the tonsils.

So I think the genes are stacked against the twins and they have lost out in the lottery of who can deal with tonsil infections and those that cannot.

If you look at it from a hereditary perspective, I brought 50% of the genes that cannot deal with infections with tonsils and hubby had the missing 50% that still cannot help with infections with tonsils. So that gives the kids 100% capacity to get sick at anything that is thrown at the poor tonsil. I say poor as it is constantly getting sick!

I don’t know why I say poor tonsils, it should be more like poor kids or poor mummy! Mummy has to deal with looking after the sick and unhappy and still try not to get sick herself. This is a hard battle to face and to slog it out without getting hit from disease is even harder. More times than I would like to count I have been ill! This year has been a slog in the battle fields of the evil tonsillitis! I don’t want it to rear its ugly head here ever again.

So in an effort to rid the house and part of the planet of sickness, I have booked the twins in to see a specialist. An ear, nose and throat specialist.  It was not one doctors surgery that has recommended they have their tonsils out, it has been two. The appointment is in December and keen to see what this expert has to say. Crossing fingers he can work his magic and make kids well and they will never suffer the repeated abuse this tonsillitis dishes out!

Have you been a slave to tonsillitis? Do your kids repeatly get sick? Do you find that you are getting ill as well? I do hope that the doctor says that kids are candiates to get their tonsils out, and if so he can do them both at the same time. I am worried that one will freak out while waiting for the other and then not want to do it. From my perspective and theirs best to have it all done at the same time. Not sure on how that would work from the doctors and hosptials end but will see what the outcome of the appontment in December is.
Have your kids had their tonsils removed? Has it helped them? Have they been much better without them? Let me know.

    Searching for the Magic Formula

The book that holds the magic formula. Getting kids to behave. Image courtesy of digitalart at FreeDigitalPhotos.net
The book that holds the magic formula. Getting kids to behave. Image courtesy of digitalart at FreeDigitalPhotos.net

Have you found the magic formula for disciplining your kids? I wish I had. Kids have been little terrors lately and I feel it is the age and the need for more stimulation. I could be wrong but I am trying to believe this.  No one listens to mummy, kids don’t do anything they are told or asked to do and as you might imagine, Mummy is over it and exhausted!

I have tried chores, incentives, and the like and all seem not to work. I have tried making it a game and getting them to help with small things, like wiping the table. It does work to a degree then goes pear shaped. Is it the competitiveness between the kids? Is it the fact that they are so close and want to do the same thing at the same time? Maybe it is.

I do feel though that the girls now they are five are pushing boundaries and seeing where it gets them.  Mostly this pushing boundaries gets them into trouble. Time out in the corner, no TV, no story or an early bedtime.

Is is due to the fact that they are twins? Pairing up to be mischievous more? Maybe? But siblings have done the same thing, so maybe it is not just down to being twins. Having a buddy in crime is helpful for the kids but annoying for the parent.

Do you have twins? Have you found the age of four to five troublesome? The girls are getting much more confident with their climbing and are little quiet ninjas when they want to not be found out. I do find it hard not to be amazed at how clever they are, but at the same time they are getting into trouble and some of it might cause injury.

I have explained to the girls how some things are very naughty and can cause one or both of them to get hurt. We always say “We don’t want to have to take you to hospital” and the kids don’t want to go, so they start to listen.  Kids I know are rough and tumble and getting hurt here or there is part of the cause, but you don’t want it to more serious than a bump or a scratch.

Do you have issues with kids listening, paying attention and doing as you ask? If you have cracked the magic formula to make it all work, PLEASE LET ME KNOW! Send in your comments.
