Harry Potter Birthday Party

This year the girls wanted a Harry Potter or Wizard themed birthday party. (Read on to get the free takeaway – Harry Potter Cupcake Toppers)

I thought how do I get into the spirit of the Harry Potter theme?

The invitations are the way to set the scene.  Making sure that the invites are on track with the Harry Potter/Wizard theme is a good start.

I create my own for the twins birthday parties and this year was no exception.

The invitation that I created for the girls 9th birthday party. I got inspired by another invite I saw and used some of the text. The images were all ones that I found online and all are clip art so free to use.
The invitation that I created for the girls 9th birthday party. I got inspired by another invite I saw and used some of the text. The images were all ones that I found online and all are clip art so free to use.

To make my invitation have the right look I had to have the Harry Potter Font or something like it. Font Space have free Harry Potter fonts and are easy to download, install and start using.

Instructions if you are installing a font for your very own Harry Potter invitation:

  1. Download the font
  2. Install the font into the fonts folder in the control panel
  3. Once the font or fonts are now added to your fonts folder you should see them in Photoshop or other programs you use to create your invitation. (I used Photoshop but if you don’t have Photoshop you can use a free web based Photoshop like editor called PIXLR EDITOR)
  4. Now you have your fonts you can get creative with your invitation.

Now you have created your Harry Potter/Wizard invitations, the food and decor are something to think about.

What type of things will you serve to make the kids feel like they are at a Harry Potter Party? The twins told me that if it is not 100% Harry Potter that is okay, it just has to be wizard like.

Phew I thought, I was worried that it might not be exact and of course not accurately Harry Potter.

I googled for inspiration. I also went to Pinterest too.

Below is what I created for the party. I did my best to keep with the Harry Potter or Wizard theme.

  1. I saw from Darla at Bakingdom that she did a coloured layered cake for each house in Harry Potter. After getting depressed about all the fancy cakes out there, I thought that this would be easier to do. I have done
The different coloured layers of the Harry Potter Cake. This is to show the different houses.
The different coloured layers of the Harry Potter Cake. This is to show the different houses.

one similar the year or so before but it was a cake that had sweets inside...yep a surprise for everyone. I used the layered cake idea for the Harry Potter Party but did my own decorations.

For the layers I added food colouring to four cakes to get one for each house:

    Gryffindor – Red
    Hufflepuff – Yellow
    Ravenclaw – Blue
    Slytherin – Greeen

  2. My decorations for the cake were piped out of dark chocolate in the shape of Harry Potter’s glasses and also the scar on his forehead. I also used chocolate stars that were already made in the cake section of the supermarket.
The dark chocolate that I piped to form the decorations on the Harry Potter Cake. I got the exact shapes from a printed download and copied that. Once done I put in the fridge to set.

  3. Sorting Hat Cupcakes – I saw them online and had to give them a go. Make your cupcakes. Cut a bit out of the middle and put in a few coloured M&M’s (I used the ones that didn’t have peanuts in case of allergies). The colours need to match the houses in Harry Potter. I did have to stand for a while and separate the colours I needed from a big bag of M&M’s. Once you have put the secret M&M’s into the cupcake put the cake back on top and then ice it. Decorate and done. Now do it the rest of them and then all your sorting hat cupcakes are organised. I made sure that there was an even number of each colour. Below are the colours I needed for the sorting hat cupcakes and as said got only those colours in six cupcakes each. I made chocolate vegan cupcakes with very dark chocolate icing. The icing was just icing sugar, organic cocoa powder from the health food shop, and water. This icing is just like pure chocolate and perfect for anyone who cannot have butter or other ingredients.

    Gryffindor – Red
    Hufflepuff – Yellow
    Ravenclaw – Blue
    Slytherin – Greeen

  4. Wizard Bread – Fairy bread but these were stars and therefore more wizardry than normal fairy bread. I had fresh bread on the day of the party, and simply cut out star shapes with a cookie cutter. Once all done I put a little bit of butter on each star and decorated them with hundreds and thousands.
    Yummy Wizard Bread

  5. Broomsticks  I got the idea from One Little Project and this can also be used for Halloween as well. All you need is straight pretzels, cheese sticks that are able to be created into the end of the broom (I used Bega Stringers as the cheese allows you to take the ends and turn them up to look like a straw broom), and then you need some chives to tie around the base of the cheese and pretzel to make it look like the tie holding the broom and the handle together.Making the broomsticks is rather fiddly so if you are like me there might be a few words said when they don’t go your way. You need to be extra careful when you push in the pretzel into the cheese. One tip that helps is to make a hole in the cheese to allow the pretzel to go in easily, however be careful as it might make the cheese break too.
Some my first broomsticks that I made. Don't they look awesome!

  6. Magic Wizard Chocolate – I saw this online ages ago and have used it for a few parties now. I have made it different by some things I used in the chocolate and of course naming it Magic Wizard Chocolate helped make it more special for the party.
To create the magic wizard chocolate. Firstly purchase some dark chocolate or the chocolate of choice to melt. You will need a couple of packs as you need to melt the chocolate and lay it on a big tray. If you have a lot of chocolate you can make two trays. You will be amazed at how quickly this gets eaten. I chose dark-cooking chocolate and got three packs of the chocolate. You then need to have sweets to stick into the melted chocolate before it hardens. Feel free to add whatever you wish as it is up to you and the theme of your party. I chose eyes, bright candy, Kit-Kats, raspberries, and sprinkles. Once the chocolate has set (I helped it along by putting it in the fridge). All you need to do is break it into little pieces so that the kids can just take a bite-sized part and not a whole bit of it. The eyes help it look a bit spooky so will be a perfect party treat for Halloween, monsters, and of course a wizard party like Harry Potter.
  7. Lolly Snakes – I made sure to have snakes as one house is called Slytherin and a birthday party really has to have more sweets it seemed to make sense.
Slytherin snakes for the kids... of course they are not real but lollies instead.
Slytherin snakes for the kids… of course, they are not real but lollies instead.

  8. Magic Chocolate Frogs – In Harry Potter there are chocolate frogs that fly away. Mine were not like this and nearly all the frogs got eaten to never return on the day. Sad but they were very yummy.

I made sure that all food had labels that fit in with the theme of the party. This way everyone got involved in the fun.

There was also a seat that had invisible cloaks for anyone who needed one. Yep I wore mine although no one knew due to it being invisible.

Tips for buying gifts for twins and triplets

Buying gifts for twins or triplets or more is more loaded than you would think. Yep, whatever you do seems wrong, so you need to make the best choice possible.

Do you purchase something for the kids to share?

Do you get the same thing for each child and be done with it?

Or do you grab something similar for each kid?

Or get the same item but in a different colour?

These decisions are fraught and ones that I take super seriously. I spend what feels like hours at shops contemplating what would be best, and what would the outcome be? Yes, I fret over it and then sometimes have gotten it so wrong, so I wanted to share what I have done and hope it helps you with your purchases.

As a mother to twins, this has been my dilemma since they were born. My twins are nearly fifteen now, but this present buying issue hasn’t gone away, although due to their age, they understand why we purchased one of something compared to having a tantrum demanding they have the same game or toy too!

I recently attended an eight-year-old twins birthday party and when purchasing their present I was faced with the same question, how will this impact the kids and also the parents? When the twins were little many people just gave the girls a present to share for their birthday…and this created so much chaos and drama.

“I don’t want to share with her!”

“It’s mine, not hers!”

“Why won’t she let me have a go?
“Why does my sister get a present and I don’t!”

“Why do we have to share this
and why can’t I have my own!”

“I have a birthday too and deserve
a gift not just my sister!”

“I want what the same thing as she has!

Why didn’t I get the same present?”

Many of the above comments are yelled at me so hence the exclamation mark at the end of all the comments. Many times, one kid would take a gift that the other really loved and claim it as their own. Yep, and then enters more disaster with the cherished gift everyone wants.

We made sure to give our girls individual gifts for their birthday, however, if there was a big item like a huge toy that can indeed be shared or if it is a game we only purchased one of these. I did however have many things that we had two off, yes, we had two of many toys, items, books, trinkets and more. It was just easier and made the house much more peaceful.

So, with the knowledge of what a pain in the arse it is to be on the receiving end of getting shared gifts or just one present for two kids I made sure that each girl at the birthday party had a gift for just them. I did give them the same things and wanted to get each kid something different, but I do know that this can backfire big time, crazy but true.

I’ve previously given my girls something different each, however, there would be one kid who would favour one of the gifts and then there would be a fight for that particular item and the realisation that I should have just purchased two of these products as it would have fixed the horrible annoyance that ended up happening…. Fighting over the one favoured and chosen object. I of course thought I was doing the right thing. Choosing something that would mean it is different from their sisters, shows more of their personality and interests and helps them be more of an individual….NO it didn’t get translated as any of this, all that got noticed is that mummy didn’t get me one of the toys that my sister has, and the other kid wishes she had.

So with that in mind, I did get the eight-year-old twins the same things…. I did feel bad, but knowing what I knew, I thought it was for the best. I did feel bad as I did want to get something completely different but as a parent that has dealt with the fallout of presents for twins, I knew this was a loaded issue. One that I hope I have helped the parents of the twins avoid the negative impacts of gifts to kids who are multiples.

I explained to the mum of the eight-year-old twins that I got them the same things to avoid arguments. She was thankful and I said I was sorry that it might not be that exciting, but I told her that I know what it is like as I have first-hand experience with my twins and appreciate the complexity of the present buying dilemma.

Here’s my gift-buying guide for twins or triplets:

  1. If you know they like to do the same things make sure to give each kid the same things; for example, If they like art, include paper, pens, paints, brushes and oil pastels to ensure there are no arguments. My twins always argued about who had what colours and paintbrushes.

  2. If they have a favourite colour make sure to use the colours for each kid for their gifts. My kids loved purple and blue, (sometimes red) I used these colours to make sure that I had special items just for them, a new pair of pants or a top, hat or even a blanket. It doesn’t matter what it is, the difference in colour makes it more special.

  3. Make sure you give each kid a gift of their own. It doesn’t need to be expensive, just something for each kid to open on their special day. Just because they are born on the same day doesn’t mean they should always get one gift.

  4. You can give bigger ticket items as shared gifts, for example, a giant LEGO set, a game, or say a toy, a trampoline or a cubby house. Many things you don’t need two of.

  5. When they are younger it is so important to have many duplicate items but as they get older you will find that each kid will want things the other siblings don’t like, work with your kid’s interests.

Are you a parent to multiples? How have you dealt with the present issue? Have you faced the same issues?

20 Reasons Why Bananas Are Great For Mum and Little Ones

From the moment you realise you are going to be a mum until your child is getting dressed all by themselves, Australian bananas are the ideal addition to both your diets. Accredited Practising Dietitian, Glenn Cardwell provides 20 reasons why:

Pregnant & New Mums

Pregnancy is the time to pamper your body and understand the impact of your eating – especially since you are dining for two. One way to give your diet a pinch of powerful production is to add nature’s non-stop energy snack, bananas.

Bananas are excellent when you are expecting because they not only contain essential nutrients for the healthy growth of your bundle of joy, but they are also good for managing morning sickness and constipation that sometimes come with having a baby on board.

  1. Relieving Your Heaving

Thankfully, morning sickness usually only lasts the first trimester but that doesn’t make it fun (however if you are like me pregnancy makes you sick all the time. Bananas have been helping me feel better for breakfast now that I’m in my 3rd trimester.) Eating dry crackers, toast or a piece of fruit like a banana in the morning before you get out of bed, and having small snacks frequently through the day can help as it keeps the stomach from being empty, which can make you feel unwell. Avoiding spicy and fatty foods can sometimes help ease nausea as well.

  1. Reduce Constipation

As the muscles in the intestine lose some of their tone during pregnancy, foods pass more slowly through the gut. The pressure of the baby on the mother’s intestines can also slow down the passage of food and waste, resulting in constipation. The solution is copious amounts of fibre, which bananas provide aplenty, fluids and physical activity. Although the banana is an obvious choice to boost your fibre intake, other fruits, wholegrain breads and cereals and legumes are good options.

  1. Energy to Burn

Bananas are an excellent source of carbohydrate energy in the form of natural sugars and starch. It’s no wonder they call it nature’s non-stop energy snack.

  1. Protect Against Spinal Cord Defects

Folate is vital in the development of a baby’s spinal cord in the womb. It is so critical that the vitamin is recommended to women considering pregnancy. An overwhelming body of evidence has linked folate deficiency in early pregnancy to increased risk of neural tube defects, most commonly known as spina bifida, in infants. One banana will provide about 10 per cent of your folate needs each day.

  1. Form Strong Gums

Extra Ascorbic acid (vitamin C) is required for forming new blood vessels, skin, gums, and other tissues, and even bones. One or two bananas each day will provide valuable vitamin C, as will other fruit, fruit juice and salad vegetables.

  1. Absorb Your Iron

In order for a healthy amount of oxygen to reach your baby via the placenta, your body (and your blood) needs about 50 per cent more iron than usual. Although a banana provides only a little iron, its vitamin C greatly helps with iron absorption from other foods. Iron supplements (usually with folate) are commonly recommended during pregnancy.

  1. Strengthen Bones and Teeth

Calcium is required for strong bones and teeth, and in nerve and muscle growth, both for mum and baby. An extra 300mg of calcium is required for pregnant teenagers as they are still growing as well as nourishing the baby. The perfect way to bump up calcium intake is to regularly drink smoothies – simply blend a banana with a cup of high calcium milk.

  1. Help Babies Grow

Extra protein is needed during pregnancy and breastfeeding to support the growth of the baby, and the production of breast milk. This is easily achieved by adding a delicious banana smoothie (a medium banana and 200mL of milk) to your daily diet.

  1. Boost Your B6

Uniquely, bananas are one of the richest fruit sources for vitamin B6. This powerful vitamin is important for cardiovascular, digestive, immune, muscular, and nervous system function. New or expecting mothers’ daily need for it increases by almost 50 per cent, making bananas a great solution.

  1. Baby’s First Food

After six months, your baby’s exclusive exposure to the bottle or the boob is coming to an end. Their digestive system is now ready for solid food. Here are a few reasons why Australian Bananas make the ideal first food:

  1. Essential Nutrients

Bananas are soft, easy for an infant to tackle, and rich with essential nutrients, including vitamin B6, folate, vitamin C, magnesium, potassium, and natural sugars for energy.

  • Half a medium banana will give an infant:
    • Folate: 33 per cent of their daily needs
    • Magnesium: 25 per cent of their daily needs
    • Vitamin B6: 50 per cent of their daily needs
  1. Familiar Consistency

Mash a banana with breast milk or formula when introducing solids. It is more likely to be accepted quickly as a new food.

  1. Made For Tiny Hands

The banana is the ideal finger food. It can be nibbled, chewed, sucked and squished. Give your child a small amount at a time.

  1. Easing Teething

During teething, a cool or frozen banana can help relieve the pain of a tooth coming through.

Nature’s Long-Lasting Energy Snack For Toddlers

Australian bananas make the ideal snack for toddlers. Whether they are just starting to walk or speaking in sentences, children at this age need one fruit serve each day. This might be a medium banana, or half a banana and half of another fruit. While bananas are very popular with young children, it is also important to introduce them to other fruits, especially once they start getting teeth towards the end of their first year of life.

  1. Great Source of Carbohydrates for Energy

To fuel the activity of a toddler, they need carbohydrates at each meal. Bananas are an excellent source of the nutrient in the form of natural sugars and starch.

  1. Protein for Growth

Normal growth needs protein to help produce new cells. A small banana smoothie (150 mL milk and a half banana) as a snack or meal is an excellent source of both protein and calcium.

  1. Vitamin B6 for Blood Health

This vitamin is needed for making red blood cells, and carrying nerve impulses. A small banana will provide about one third of their B6 needs for the day.

Banana Guacamole for Kids
Banana Guacamole for Kids

  1. Folate for Growth and Brain Health

The B vitamin folate is needed for proper growth and development. Half a banana will give a toddler about 15 per cent of their folate needs each day.

  1. Fibre for Digestive Health

Bananas are a great-tasting source of fibre, so even a small serving a day for a young child will help keep them regular.

  1. Convenience

Toddlers only want to eat when they are hungry, and they may not want to finish everything on their plate, making snacks like bananas so convenient. You can simply cut them in two and save half in the refrigerator in plastic wrap for later.

Make a White Knight and Bear & Sparrow Easter Hat

Easter will soon be here and so will the Easter Hat parade at your local school.

If this is shocking, then I might have freaked you out. Breathe it is okay!

I will hand you a lovely cup of virtual coffee or tea depending on your preference, and you can have a little quiet time. This will allow you to process that it will soon be school holidays or the fact that kids will be hyperactive and high on chocolate due to the gifts from The Easter Bunny and a well-meaning family.

White Knight and Bear and Sparrow sent my girls some lovely Easter Hat kits. It was so much fun creating them and they look so good. Much better than I would have done on my own.
White Knight and Bear and Sparrow sent my girls some lovely Easter Hat kits. It was so much fun creating them and they look so good. Much better than I would have done on my own.

If you are like me, you failed badly at creating an Easter Hat for your kids. I ran out of time and purchased an oversized beach hat for each child. They were pink so I thought they would love them. However, as soon as decorations were added to these hats they immediately fell off and due to the size of the hat and the fact it had a very floppy rim the kids could not see very well while the hat was on. If you really must analyse how it went, it might be termed a complete disaster.

Hopefully, you are now feeling rested and relaxed after the virtual cuppa I gave you.

Now for my solution to make it all better for Easter, or the very least making the Easter Hat Parade stress free this year! Yes, it can be easier and your child will have one amazing rockstar of a hat.

White Knight Paints and Bear & Sparrow have teamed up to create to help parents take all the stress out of creating the Easter Hat.

“White Knight Paints has been a leading force in the specialty paint market for many years. When painting bathroom tiles, kitchen cabinets, metal fencing, your front porch or just indulging in a fun upcycling project, White Knight has an easy-to-use product for just about every DIY project, to help our consumers always achieve a professional result” says Brand Manager Dilani Fernando.

Bear and Sparrow is a registered Australian owned, boutique children’s decor business. They are based in Brisbane and have some lovely handmade wooden pieces.

The Easter Hats use White Knight Squirt Spray Paints. They come in 43 different colours and the new formulation has a primer and topcoat all in one. This paint dries quickly and is touch dry in just 10 minutes. This is good for craft projects with kids, you know how keen they are to start using their creations.

All the components for making this fabulous Easter Hat can be purchased at the hardware store and craft store, all for under $40.

It should take about 1 hour to make, so that is not long at all. Check out the video and download the Easter Hat Instructions here.

After your kids use their new groovy Easter Hats in the school parade you can also re-use it as a table decoration for family meals during Easter.

Review: Natralus Australia Skincare

If you are like me you love receiving gifts and especially if they are ones that allow you to pamper yourself. I recently received a box of Natralus Australia skincare products to test out and share my thoughts with you my lovely readers.

My skin always gets so dry in autumn and winter so having a good quality moisturiser on hand is essential. This deodorant is so wonderful and makes me smell like a rose all day long. It is not a strong scent, in fact, it is more a subtle rose that makes you feel like you are on holiday or it is summer still. You can get natural deodorants in Cool Spice, Lemon Myrtle, Zesty Citrus, Citrus Spring, and Sea Berry.
  • NATRALUS NATURAL PAW PAW BALM
This natural paw paw balm is so moisturising and stays on your lips for ages. It is thicker and really helps keeps my lips feeling good and also looking amazing. I think you will be super amazed at the quality of this paw paw balm and it will soon be a firm favourite for you too.

MUSE My New Best Friend

Note: I loved my new Muse the brain sensing headband so much, that I became an affiliate for the product. If you click on the links for MUSE it will take you to the affiliate link.

Loving my new My first mediation session with MUSE The Brain Sensing Headband. It is so amazing and really helps me relax. Do you meditate? Does it work for you? You can clearly see that I look sleepy and very calm here.
Loving my new first mediation session with MUSE The Brain Sensing Headband. It is so amazing and really helps me relax. Do you meditate? Does it work for you? You can clearly see that I look sleepy and very calm here.

For my birthday hubby gave me Muse: the brain sensing headband

He thought I could use it.

There are a few reasons that this is a good present for me.

I hold my stress in my neck, and shoulders and clench my teeth. This then leads to intense headaches and the body being out of whack.

Relaxing is hard when you have kids and very little downtime.

I do try and have some quiet time that allows the brain and body to rest.

The meditations that I did without MUSE were not done as well as they could have been. I got distracted. I was thinking about all the things I had to do, all the things that were half done or yet to happen and of course people I needed to contact. Hard to have your brain power down and to just be still. Be calm and rest for just a moment.

Why did Hubby Purchase MUSE The Brain Sensing Headband?

Well, hubby listens to Pat Flynn from Smart Passive Income and also Ask Pat. He said that Pat raves about his Muse Headband and says that meditation has helped him and his business.

Pat Flynn said the following:

“Meditation has transformed my life. It’s improved my focus and well-being, and it’s altered my productivity during my workday in a radical way.”

Hubby knew I was a stressed-out mummy so thought this might be the way to go.

My darling hubby also knew that I am trying to achieve more with my blog and other business ideas, so the more relaxed I will be the better life will be for all parts of my life. A win-win really.

My first Muse Session. I think I did okay. Some things need to be improved. The main thing is that I felt very relaxed afterwards and not on edge all the time.
My first Muse Session. I think I did okay. Some things need to be improved. The main thing is that I felt very relaxed afterwards and not on edge all the time.

How does MUSE The Brain Sensing Headband Work?

Firstly MUSE is a headband and an app.

You wear the headband and use it in conjunction with the app on your phone or tablet.

One thing to remember is that you need to wear headphones to make it work. I didn’t use these at first and it did not progress to the meditation and kept on calibrating. I thought that since I was alone that headphones would not be needed. However, it all works once you plug in your headphones and then you can relax away.

It is really easy to use. The headband is comfortable and you can adjust it to fit any size of the head. If you do have a lot of hair it is advisable to put it up or have it out of the way so that the sensors on the headband can connect with your skin on your head.

So what do you need to do first?

  1. Download the Choose MUSE app.
  2. Set up an account so that you can log onto MUSE for your mediation history and data.
  3. You will have to charge your headphones before your first use. This comes with a charger that you can plug into the computer to make sure they are all ready to go.
  4. Make sure you have headphones and your headband ready.
  5. Find a quiet spot to give your MUSE headband a go and start the calibrations. Every time you start your mediation with MUSE it makes sure that the headband is on correctly and sets up with colours within a circle. Once all is complete the app will let you know when you are ready to progress to your first meditation session.
  6. If your brain wanders you will hear more stormy weather. If you are very calm and relaxed you will hear birds. The more birds you hear the better you are doing. MUSE rates things in birds. They believe that birds are only attracted to calm and relaxed people. So more birds will visit when you are super calm and in the zone of relaxation. (This is true. If you have ever been to a park and sat quietly and noticed how many birds have come to visit you?)
  7. Make sure after your meditation session you turn off your headband. Turning it off will save how often you need to recharge it.

How does MUSE make you feel?

For me, using MUSE makes me calmer, more relaxed and allows some stillness in my world. Normally my world is filled with craziness, racing around and just reacting to things. Meditation allows for more mindfulness to really take time to look at things in a calmer and more controlled way.

I like Liza below feel that MUSE is a great tool to help you be more at the moment, and not as crazy as you would be if you did not have that time to relax through meditation with MUSE.

Do you feel like me and have a lot going on?

Need some downtime? How about some nice calm relaxation time just for you?

Do you already mediate and if so how has it changed your life or outlook on things?

My first mediation session with MUSE The Brain Sensing Headband.
My first mediation session with MUSE The Brain Sensing Headband.

I do have to thank Pat Flynn for sharing on his site and for hubby for purchasing the gift in the first place.

If you would love to try a MUSE The Brain Sensing Headband then you can order online. They deliver worldwide so you can be anywhere and order one. Perfect to help the relaxation start.

Selena Gomez takes Social Media Break & Why You Should Too!

Why is it a good idea to take a technology break? Find out 5 reasons why taking a technology detox can help you feel better.

Selena Gomez‘s decision to take a break from social media for the sake of her mental health is a brave and wise choice. While social media has its benefits, such as staying connected with loved ones and discovering new ideas and information, it can also be a source of stress and negative emotions for teenagers, as it has the potential to amplify feelings of comparison, bullying, and isolation.

P!nk has recently shared that she has received hateful and horrible messages in the media over very old articles years ago. The focus should really be on her new album and all the hard work that went into it, however, the media are focused on rehashing things from when she was in her 20’s, just silly if you ask me. The issue here is that P!nk is honest in her interviews and tells it how it is – I find it interesting that if you have an honest opinion even if you say that you didn’t get on with someone and have since made up with that person that the news that these comments keep getting retold and beat up. Honestly, I think P!nk is amazing and love her raw honesty, passion and hard work. See the social media bashing is happening to us all!

I’m a lot older than Selena and I’m an avid user of social media. However, there are times that I look at some people’s images and accounts and get rather depressed. I am sad about how amazing their life looks; they look stunning in their designer outfits, they have an awesome home and have the perfect vacation overseas with their family. Oh how I would wish for that too. I like Selena have purposefully taken a break from being online, removing my phone from being close to me, not taking my phone with me when I am out or not looking at any of my accounts or sharing what I am up to for a while. What about you?

Teenagers and social media

Firstly, social media encourages teenagers to constantly compare themselves to others. This constant comparison can lead to feelings of inadequacy, low self-esteem, and even depression. Teenagers are bombarded with images of “perfect” bodies, luxurious lifestyles, and seemingly flawless relationships, which can lead to unrealistic expectations and a distorted view of reality.

Secondly, social media can be a breeding ground for bullying. Anonymous accounts and online anonymity can make it easy for bullies to target their victims, causing serious emotional distress. Cyberbullying can have severe consequences, including depression, anxiety, and even suicide.

Lastly, social media can prevent teenagers from developing meaningful relationships in real-life situations. It’s essential for teenagers to have face-to-face interactions with their peers and to engage in activities that allow them to develop social skills, such as team sports, clubs, and volunteering. Social media can be a tempting substitute for real-life interactions, but it can never fully replace the importance of human connection.

My kids have had some issues with bullies online (It is so easy to be horrible to people when you are anonymous, right!). These bullies used fake accounts and created made-up things about the kids to share with their friend groups. All of this was disgusting and horrible and of course not true, however for teenagers or younger kids having this happen is a nightmare. I did try and tell my kids to just not look at the phone and ignore it. Or maybe just delete the app altogether. However, this response was met by the kids saying “my friends will think that we are ignoring them and more!” My response was that if these people are truly your friends ignoring them on the app is not the end of the world, then explaining in real life via a face-to-face will be what is needed.

When I grew up there were no mobile phones, no internet and no social media! The only way to connect was face to face and if you did have a disagreement you would just not play with this person for a while until you made up or it could be forever depending on the relationship or what had happened.

Social media has its benefits, it’s important for teenagers to be aware of the potential negative effects it can have on their mental health. Taking breaks from social media and engaging in real-life interactions can help teenagers develop meaningful relationships, improve their social skills, and prevent feelings of comparison, bullying, and isolation.

Being online constantly can have both positive and negative effects on mental health. On the one hand, it can provide social connection and support, especially for individuals who may feel isolated or marginalized. It can also serve as a platform for self-expression and creativity.

On the other hand, social media can also lead to negative consequences. Excessive social media use can contribute to feelings of anxiety, depression, and loneliness, especially if individuals compare themselves unfavourably to others on social media. The pressure to maintain a curated online presence can also be stressful and overwhelming, negatively impacting mental health, and not a real way of living and being. It would take a toll on anyone to have to keep up with the illusion of fantasy at all times.

Taking a break from social media, as Selena Gomez did, can be a helpful way to prioritize mental health and focus on oneself. It can provide an opportunity for individuals to disconnect from the constant barrage of information and comparison on social media, and instead focus on personal growth and well-being. I for one have felt that there has been a lot of bad news, so stepping away from the news sites, social media and tv reports for me has been helpful too.

Being online all the time is not good for you. A break is a good thing to have.

Taking a technology detox, or a break from technology, can offer several benefits:

  1. Reduced stress and anxiety: Technology can be overwhelming and create feelings of stress and anxiety. Taking a break from technology can help you relax and unwind.

  2. Improved sleep: Exposure to the blue light emitted by electronic devices can interfere with your sleep cycle. Taking a break from technology can help improve your sleep quality and quantity.

  3. Increased productivity: Technology can be a major distraction, and taking a break can help you focus on important tasks and be more productive.

  4. Improved mental health: Constant use of technology can lead to feelings of depression and isolation. Taking a break can help you connect with people in real life and improve your overall mental health.

  5. More time for other activities: Technology can be time-consuming, and taking a break can free up time for other activities, such as exercise, hobbies, and spending time with loved ones.

Overall, a technology detox can help you recharge, refocus, and reconnect with yourself and others.

Have you taken a technology detox? Was it just on your social media? How did you feel after your break?

Yep and I understand the irony of me writing this for my online blog…even if you just take a break from your phone for the weekend, or just during the evenings, it will help you feel better.

After Lockdown I Need A Holiday Alone

We are about to enter our eighth week of lockdown. Yes, it will be nearly two months until we have been allowed to go anywhere other than our local LGA (council area).

Not only are we going stir crazy and getting frustrated, but it also looks like there is a huge possibility that the lockdown that was set to end at the end of August will be extended for another eleven weeks! However, this is not confirmed but has been a rumour, especially on Twitter.

So if it is true we have another few months of lockdown. It will end around the end of October or possibly be extended for Christmas and New Year, who knows at this stage.

A holiday at a hotel just for me!

It has been rather sad as the kids have missed out on their holidays as the lockdown started during the winter school holidays and it looks like the twins will celebrate their thirteenth birthday at home if we are still in lockdown in September.

I am sure I am not the only one that has missed alone time. With everyone at home there is nowhere to be and when you do finally stop working there is always something crazy going on with the kids that means that you are never truly relaxed.

I am living in a house that is constantly noisy, crazy with activity and with kids that don’t listen.

Not only is there no break but the kids have taken over my personal laptop for their school work, so that means that when I finally get some time for me, I cannot access my own computer due to the kids using it.

One thing that would make things much easier, is if all the kids could go back to school. It is a real struggle to get my five-year-old to do any school work and the constant arguments and negotiations are so draining.

After lockdown ends I know that many will be desperate to travel and I for one am one of those people, however, I have been thinking that after a huge lockdown trapped with family members that are making you frustrated, annoyed and making you feel like retreating.

I believe that holiday retreats for parents without kids or just the mum having some time out is what is going to happen. Bring it on I say!

I am drooling over the idea of going to a hotel all by myself. I don’t need to partake in all the services offered, however would be happy if the hotel of choice has a day spa. Mainly I would just enjoy the room on my own, sleeping in, watching my own tv and doing my own thing for a change. Oh and finally being able to not be responsible for the food and bedding would be awesome too!

Have you been thinking about the holiday you would take if you were not in lockdown? Currently, I don’t have to travel that far to get a nice hotel but as it is a huge cost staying at home is the cheaper option.

I am still getting emailed newsletters about holidays I can go on throughout Australia and also overseas, although with us not being able to travel at the moment, booking a holiday is not a good idea. I do spend a lot of time staring at the photos on the travel emails and wishing that I could go somewhere with the family or on my own. However, at this stage, it is not to be.

Wishing I was in the Maldives

Are you in the same boat? Wishing you could travel somewhere amazing? Are you also getting heaps of emails about booking your next holiday?

I know it sounds crazy that I wish to be alone after lockdown but with all the constant crazy energy I am seeking some calm time out. I am also wishing it would be nice to visit family and friends but mainly I am dreaming of a hotel room for just me.

Let me know if you are feeling the same.

Year Six Eve

Today is the day before the twins start year six…otherwise known as Year Six Eve.

I still cannot believe my little girls are nearly finished primary school.

This growing up thing has snuck up on me and I know it has happened gradually…however, lately, I’ve noticed how grown up my girls are looking lately.  In recent photos, they are really looking like young ladies rather than girls.

The girls are excited and nervous at the same time about starting grade six this year.

Big year, the twins start grade 6 – The last year of primary school

So what are they excited about?

  • Seeing their friends
  • Being the big kids at the school
  • Finding out what teacher they each get and of course who’s in their class
  • Getting their year six jumper
  • Going to the local high school to find out more and to experience what it’s like to be at high school

What they are nervous about?

  • Being in grade six – the work that might be involved for the big kids at school
  • Leaving primary school for high school next year
  • Not getting the teacher they want
  • Not being a class with their friends
  • Soon to be in high school

It is a HUGE year for the twins, and also the last year before they are teenagers. Although you would think from their attitude that they are already teenagers.

The girls from my insistence have packed their bags for school tomorrow and I’ll check if they have their uniforms sorted as well. I want to be organised for the first day to ensure that we are not late, as we have to drop Alexander off to care that morning as well.

I’m keen for school to go back but not keen on all the things that go with it during the term, after school activities, getting lunches ready, and being a taxi for everything and everyone. I quite liked not doing any of these things.

So wish us luck for the start of term 1 and one that I feel will be a big year for everyone.   It only feels like yesterday that the twins started at the primary school and now it is their last year at the school.

Too Much On My Mind

I’ve not been well and finding it difficult as I keep on thinking about sleep. My bed keeps wanting me to keep it company and as I’ve had a few days of horrible headaches I totally agree that rest and sleep might be a very good idea.

Aside from not being well, I have nearly a week to organise everything for the twins 11th birthday party. I don’t understand where the time has gone. You would not think they are babies anymore and just looking at them you will see tall kids that are lanky and seem to be getting stretched out – they are in the lanky phase of growth before full set puberty sets in.

Puberty might not have happened but you would think it was due to the moods and craziness that is happening at our place.

Not only have I been trying to keep up with the kids’ events at school, one main one was seeing them dance in the school’s entry into the Wakkarki Dance Competition. All the kids did such an amazing job and it was many hours of practice from the kids plus a very long day and night of the show.  I was very proud to see the kids do such a great uplifting performance and it was a wonderful feel-good story of acceptance and making friends from all different backgrounds.

The performance for Wakkarki was at Riverside Theatre in Parramatta and the kids left school at 10.30am and didn’t get picked up by parents until 9pm that evening. We arrived home well after 11pm and I don’t think they got to bed until after 12am as both kids wanted a shower to remove makeup and thick hairspray from their hair.

This week the twins are having another late night due to both singing at the Opera House with school and Wednesday to Friday last week went to Canberra with the school. Yes, the busyiness hasn’t stopped!

Making lists of what I need to do and getting a coffee at the same time.
Making lists of what I need to do and getting a coffee at the same time.

Last weekend the girls had basketball training, their basketball game and then a birthday party to attend. The next day was Father’s Day and lunch with the family and a hike with daddy. Phew….. plus other things that they get up to after school too!

This is not to mention wrangling a toddler to care and to entertain as well. Oh and being sick too. I was feeling okay and on the mend until the twins got ill a week before they went to Canberra….thank goodness they got better and was able to attend their excursion to the nation’s capital, if they couldn’t go I am sure I wouldn’t hear the end of it, and also as we had paid in full it would have been an expensive non-excursion.

I’ve upped my vitamins, been to the doctor and am now on antibiotics. Not sure that the drugs are needed but over being sick and feeling horrible all the time.

I am going to bed with a million things on my mind. Getting things for the cake, wrapping presents, organising party bags for the twins birthday party, finalising the list of who’s coming, cleaning the house for relatives that will be over soon to celebrate with us, things I wanted to do but can only think about sleep or attempting to keep my eyes open.

In an attempt to stay energised I had two coffees the other day, and I fear this was a horrible mistake. I was still extremely tired but couldn’t go to sleep. I lay in bed thinking of all the things I needed to organise and are yet to do, and yes this stressed me out and still made me not able to sleep.

So now I am not doing two coffees, I have only one in the early hours of the morning. I fight the urge to have another as I know this will cause me to be staring at the ceiling and getting frustrated about my lack of drive due to being zapped of energy due to a cold or the flu… not sure what it is but only know that I hate it and want it to go away and never come back.

Have you had a very busy time? Are you still going through it? Has it coincided with you getting ill? If so how did you manage?

Holidays Over Now Enter Routine

Today the twins are back at school and Alex is at daycare.

I did have mixed feelings about the twins going back to school.

  1. Not having to make school lunches, drop kids at school and pick up was great while the holidays lasted.
  2. Kids fighting and being constantly at each other did get annoying.
  3. Quiet time with no kids is the best part of school going back.
  4. The sad part of school going back is that we are back to schedules and racing there and everywhere.

So how did you fare during the holidays?

I’m slowly getting back into the swing of things but I do wish it was still holidays. I suppose being ill with a cold or the flu that will not go away (I’m not sure what it is other than I am unwell – I just want to sleep all day)

The twins are growing up so quickly, they only have two more terms left of grade five and then next year is their last year of primary school… soon to be big high school kids. I don’t know how this time has flown by but it has.

I must say that kids going back to school is a little better on the hip pocket…keeping the little ones entertained can get expensive.  School means that the costs are less but there is still costs, i.e school excursions, events and after school activities to pay for.

Did you do a happy dance when your kids went off school this morning? Or maybe they have been back for weeks already?

Winter is Upon Us and so is Illness

One kid hasn’t been well, the other kid is now telling me she isn’t feeling the best and the youngest is constantly having accidents and hurting himself.

It seems like a horrible joke that everyone wants to be ill at the same time!

Why does everyone get sick in winter and nearly at the same time???
Why does everyone get sick in winter and nearly at the same time???

Winter this year was a rude shock. It actually started a week early and was so cold, freezing to be precise. Icy winds, some snow fell but never settled and the heater has been going nonstop. Oh and not to mention the winter woollies are making an appearance – Multiple layers, beanie and scarf.

The kid that wasn’t well had to be taken to the doctor due to a horrible temperature and fever that was getting worse. Initially, I thought that she was over the worst of it but it wasn’t getting better, the doctor then told us that she had an ear infection and needed antibiotics.

This kid that hasn’t been well and not eating a lot and has dropped a few kgs. She is also fighting me on drinking Hydralyte, the reason I want her to drink this is due to the fact her joints are sore and she is finding it hard to walk.   Electrolytes in the Hydralyte help your muscles and therefore will help her feel better when walking, also eating more will help too.

She is eating toast and drinking water, so I hope her food intake will pick up soon. She has no temperatures and seems so much better than a few days ago.

Her attitude is there and she is telling jokes so I know she is on the mend.

Have you noticed that your kids are getting sick now that the cold weather is upon us?

I was going to get us all the flu shot but need to wait until everyone is well to do so.

Ups and Downs of School Holidays

How are you going? Are you surviving the school holidays?  I have had moments when it has all gone to hell and I’ve wanted to run to the hills and not come back for a while.

However, even with the annoyance and angst, I’ve been trying to embrace the holiday spirit and my mantra for this year…be happier.

I’ve been spending more time with the kids and family, hence why I haven’t posted recently. Sorry for the lack of updates.

I have been taking the kids to parks, movies, organising play dates, parties, sleepovers, I got tickets so kids can do some science at the local botanic gardens and much more!

One thing that is doing my head in is the arguments and one-upmanship between the twins.  It is really annoying, exhausting and frustrating to say the least. Are you in the same boat with your kids?

Do you find that a good stiff drink is in order after a tumultuous session with the kids not hearing anything you say? Oh, and when no one answers your questions, even when they are right next to you!

Even with the frustrations that holidays bring it has been relaxing and happy experience. We have spent time with friends and family and also managed to have a sleep in on a few days (So this is a win in my book).

Alexander had his birthday party and is now a three-year-old. He was very happy that his two mates from childcare could come to his party, and it was so adorable to see all three of them play in the park with each other.  Three cute little people taking walks and chatting and playing amongst themselves, they were super busy doing important playthings.

I still cannot believe the girls will be entering grade 5 soon, they are getting so grown up and soon primary will be finished for both of them. Only this year and next and then they are off to high school.

Hope you’re having a good break and spending some fun time with family these school holidays.  If you are having painful moments like me, I hope that they don’t last long or you can get a break for a bit.

Coming up next on the blog is are my tales of helping two ten years old’s with their new Harry Potter LEGO sets, it was a long, exhausting, frustrating and at times rewarding experience.  It really ends up as a tale of woe from all sides. I’m sure all mums and dads that have tried to assist a child with LEGO will understand the ups and downs of this fine line you walk between taking over or just helping.

New Year Strike

Happy New Year! It is rather amazing that it is 2019. A year full of new plans, hopes, dreams and hopefully exciting times.

My word for 2019 is “Happy”

I noticed that the twins were wanting me to be happier last year, they even sat me down and had a chat about how they want me and daddy to be happy.

Celebrating the new year and new possibilities.
Celebrating the new year and new possibilites.

Mind you we have been going through a rather trying time of late. Hubby lost his job a few months before Christmas and due it being a bad time to be job hunting everything has been put on hold until 2019. And my grandmother the girls (GG) died so that was very upsetting and sad too.

I’ve been running around like a headless chicken organising and doing for everyone but not me. So no surprise that I am not the happiest person, oh plus no one helps out. When the mere suggestion of help is said to any child all I get is screams and yelling about how “I don’t want to do that!”, or “It’s not mine, so why should I have to pick it up??”

Geez, I don’t want to do housework either but I do, and nearly 99% of items that I pick up are not mine either!

2019 is going to be a year of change and making things easier on me and teaching the kids that I am not a slave. I am sick of doing for everyone and not getting anything back, and of course, I am intentionally injecting happy into my day, life and family.

The twins spent a week with my mum and step-dad and came home today. They have been short tempered, yelling at me and grunting or getting angry at everything.

One kid decided to ask for my help with one craft activity that she got as a Christmas present from school. She was happy and keen to set it all up and then couldn’t find a key part of the box.

She came to tell me that she couldn’t find it, and I said that I had tidied up their room to welcome them home ( I gave each kid Harry Potter bed sets and had washed them all to have them on the beds for when the girls returned, I tidied their room and sorted out their clothes too – they are all folded in a basket ready to be put away). I told this kid that I originally found the box in the corner of the room shoved at the end of the cupboards so maybe it had fallen out.

To look for this we needed to move things and that was met with screaming and yelling at me. She then yelled at me that it was on the desk and that is where she remembered leaving it. I told her to look at the desk and behind it, in case it had fallen out and was on the floor.

Being happy with friends and family helps with you being happier too, that is unless they don't listen due to being pre-teen kids!

Her looking skills were the following: staring at the desk and yelling and not moving anything! Did she think that the missing item would just magically appear? It possibly might fly out and announce itself to her.

I, of course, was rather annoyed at the tidy room now becoming messy again and was also interrupted at finally putting fresh sheets on my bed to help out a kid that was yelling at me.

I then explained that I spent a long time getting her room ready and getting all the clothes folded and the room tidy. I know she was unhappy and annoyed she had lost something but I was trying to help her.

No one saw it my way and everyone now thinks that I was being horrible by getting angry at the said child.

My reaction is that I am STRIKE!

No one values anything I do

No one helps

I get yelled at

People can fend for themselves

I don’t get paid or treated nicely, and I am very over the silly and horrible behaviour.

So my word for the year is maybe not great for today, but I am now Happy in my bedroom with a cool drink working on my laptop.

Maybe this is being happy, well for a little bit.

This might allow the family to appreciate everything I do.

I’ve told Hubby and the twins that I’m not cooking, cleaning or doing laundry. If someone wants something they need to sort it out themselves.

I wonder how long it will be before I get the “I’m Sorry Mummy!” “Please help me with this, or cook me this or do that”

How is your first day of 2019 going?

Oh, by the way, Alexander hurt himself and needed mummy so I had to deal with that and then magically the other child found the missing item that was lost. A very sorry kid still wanted me to help her with her project and I thought it would be nice.

The twins cooked their own dinner, although there were moments and a major injury (not with food or the stove but due to someone hurting their head on a cabinet).

Now kids are in bed and I can finally return to my work and some much needed quiet time.

I do hope that your first day of the year was better than mine, although there were some nice moments but some annoying ones too.

Massive Drive to Cub Camp

Last Friday the 12th of October was HUGE! Actually massive.

The twins went to another cub camp and to get them where I needed to drive about 3 hours….Yes, you read that right, 3 hours.

The girls ready for camp
The girls ready for camp

Let’s just hope that 3-hour drive is it not like the 3-hour tour in Gilligan’s Island.

Gilligan didn’t have GPS and I do so there is a vast difference and therefore the chances of getting lost are rather slim.

However, sometimes my stupid GPS decides to direct me to streets that it shouldn’t and does cause confusion. Read on to have a HUGE giggle at my epic fail.

I do have an idea of where we are going and hubby has camped at this site as a scout when he was younger. Due to prior knowledge of the area I have been told that it is easy to miss the turn-off and if I do, I will need to go around again and this can be painful!

So we need to keep our eyes peeled.  I really don’t want to miss the entry to this place and have to go around the highway and roads again for another go.

I’ve already survived the twins packing for camp and all the silly behaviour that came with it. Their bags are in the boot of my car ready for our huge journey to the campsite.

Not only do I need to take two kids to camp on a long car trip, but I also have to pick up Alexander as I will not be able to pick him up tonight due to being hours away. So the girl’s little brother will join us all in our adventure to the campsite.

I have learnt one thing from a previous camp, I must feed them dinner. The girls last camp I assumed that they would get fed dinner, however, this didn’t happen. The organisers did feed them supper (snack) but it wasn’t dinner.

On our way, we will stop off to ensure that all kids are fully fed and happy before they will be finally dropped at the campsite for two days of fun.

I have to pack a bag of drinks and food for Alexander so that if he wants anything all is sorted.

I’m hoping that Alexander doesn’t scream all the way home as has happened before. I hope that daycare has tired him out and the adventure of the long trip will keep him busy.

—————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————–

EPIC FAIL: Remember I mentioned I would be fine as I had GPS to help me find the way. Well this didn’t happen. In fact Google actually directed me to a street that is no where near the camp and managed to do this twice. Yes, I know how silly to be directed to the wrong place once but twice! The second time around it made it sound like we were actually going somewhere different, then low and behold I ended up in the same stupid street that is not where I needed to be at all.

It was not just me that did this, there was another man taking his kids to the camp and he did the same thing I did, but to his benefit he only did it once. I did yell a bit and say a few choice words but was rather concerned as the kids and I were super early and due to not knowing how to correct this navitagion failure I was worried I would be very late now.

This other dad and I looked at the map he had, one mum that was already at the camp called me and helped me out over the phone. Due to this extra help or brains trust, the kids and I and the other family managed to find the campsite and where we needed to be.  I wasn’t that late and in fact only added an extra 20 minutes to my journey and to my amazement there were so many others arriving after us, so that made me feel better.

I must say I might share more in common with Gilligan than I would like to admit.

————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————-

Last Friday was officially the last day of the school holidays aside from the weekend, as Monday the girls go back to school.

Yep, term 4 starts soon! How cool is this?

Not much will go wrong on Monday morning, right? Totally tired and exhausted kids from a full weekend away and having to get up earlier to go to school. I hope they get up and get organised okay.

Oh, and did I mention that we have had non-stop rain, and it is not stopping this weekend. In fact, it might be really heavy rain on Saturday.

The kids are camping in tents and will get very wet. I am sure that all the nice sorted clothes that went of dry and clean will come back all soaked and covered in mud. I just hope that they manage to put it all in the garbage bags provided so they don’t get everything super wet.

Another massive win is one of the other parents are able to take the twins home, so this saves me dragging Alexander to another 3-hour drive to pick them up on Sunday.

Have you had massive days during the school holidays? What did you get up to that required a HUGE drive with the kids too?

I am looking forward to things going back to normal next week with school returning.

Update: The twins had a wonderful time at camp. They came home very wet with everything in their bags wet and muddy as I expected.  It has taken me two days and I think I have finished the washing. Phew…. but I know that there is more to come when I tidy up other rooms and change the sheets for everyone. The washing never lets up.

10th Birthday, Billy Carts & Unicorn Horn Failure

Last Thursday (the 13th) was the girls 10th birthday.

I was busy getting everything ready for the twins birthday week and birthday party on the weekend.

Wednesday night I stayed up late creating cupcakes for each kids classroom. Due to the girls being in different classes I had to create over 50 cupcakes!

The total for the cupcakes was 56 and also one very tired mummy.

I ended up going to bed at 11.50pm and of course, Alexander woke at 4.20am and decided to stay up all day! He would not go to bed.

I was struggling to keep my eyes open. Alex eventually fell asleep in the car on the way to pick the kids up from school. Typical! After we got home I put him to bed and he slept until 4am the next morning. Yes again with waking at 4am!

Wednesday after school the twins wanted to purchase birthday presents for each other. They both have their own Spriggy Cards. (Spriggy Cards is a debit card just for kids.  A modern way to do pocket money)

Each kid had their cards and raced around BigW getting a present for her sister.   (More on the blog soon about the Spriggy Cards – If you wish to get a Spriggy Card for your kids here is my referral code: TWINSPLUSONE.)

Each kid came up and showed me what they got their sister and each kid got the same things.
I asked if they talked to her sister and I got told no, so the only thing I can think is that they are definitely identical twins.

I don’t know how they did it but everything was the same! Once home each kid wrapped their presents for each other and was very happy with themselves as they have never bought presents for each other on their birthday before.

You might think that two sleepless nights due to Alexander waking early and staying up late to organise birthday things were bad, but I’ve had about three or more weeks of Alexander waking at all hours and I’m so tired.

Not only was the twins birthday Thursday and Wednesday was busy, but the twins also had Billy Card Derby on Friday.

I stayed at school all day to see them race as they were teaming up with different kids and their races were at different times.

The Billy Cart Derby happens every two years at the girl’s school. It is a huge fundraiser for the school to purchase much-needed equipment.

Next time the Billy Cart Derby will happen the girls will be in grade six (last year of primary) and it will be around the same time as their birthday too.

Being at the school all day meant that no cake for the Saturday birthday party got made.

I was exhausted! Now I needed to make a cake during the evening and all I wanted to do is go to bed.

I decided for the first time to purchase some sponges from the supermarket and just decorate them.  This is the first year I have not made a cake and only purchased some due to being so tired.

Vanilla and chocolate sponges purchased from Woolworths and all I needed to do is ice, and decorate.

It ended up being late Friday night and I couldn’t get the unicorn horn right.

The twins requested a unicorn cake this year, however, I feel that I need lessons to get the horn looking better.

Hubby and others thought that it looked like pooh or like a penis… yes sad but true!    I think kids liked it and due to being so tired I think the cake was not the best it could be.

I couldn’t get the icing to sit on the wooden skewer so had to mold it more. No detail was shown and it was too fat!

I also used natural food dye this time and it didn’t go into the icing for the horn. I ended up putting glittery decorations on it instead. Maybe normal food dye would have worked out better.

The girls had their 10th birthday party at Penrith Skatel . Each kid wished to have something different this year. We thought a roller skating party would be fun.

The girls told me that this was the BEST PARTY EVER!

The Skate Rink provided chips and nibbles and we paid a little extra for the hot food option for all kids.

The party food came with an ice cream cake and this was a blessing as it was over 34 degrees on Saturday.

I will do another unicorn cake when I’ve had more sleep and figure out how to make the horn better. Once organised I will post.

I’m happy the kids had a great birthday, roller skating party and billy cart derby day was a success too.

This success was good regardless of the unicorn horn failure… I did make it look pretty.

Have you had a cake fail? Did it matter? Or just to you?
