First Snow of 2022

Last night it started to snow. It was the first snow of 2022 and of course, it is the week before it is officially Spring. Yes, you might have already guessed that it is still very very very cold here. Although still freezing we have had the odd day where it was warmer than before but still not hot…so for me, this was a nice sign that warmer weather is fast approaching.

I wonder if on the 1st of September it will suddenly be warmer? Will the weather know that it does need to suddenly be warmer? I do hope so. If it is miraculously warm then the universe must then instantly know that it is spring and I need to be warm.

If it is indeed warmer soon, I might finally be able to sit outside in the garden with a drink and enjoy the flowers.

So of course we were hit by another last-ditch attempt to still be in the freezing cold

Try EveryPlate today and you’ll get up to $115 off your first four boxes, with dinner from as little as $2.39 per plate. Click here to get this deal.

Dinner at Pins on Lurline

One thing that I have missed with the lockdown restriction is eating out.

With the restrictions easing, we were lucky to experience dining at a wonderful restaurant on our wedding anniversary.

Pins at Lurline in Katoomba - Yummy food and great service
Pins at Lurline in Katoomba – Yummy food and great service

A few weeks ago we were lucky to be able to book a table at Pins on Lurline

If you have kids and wish to get your fix of some yummy fancy food, then don’t worry Pins on Lurline cater for kids too!

“At Pins believe that it is never to early to appreciate good food and we welcome well-behaved children. Our younger guests can order from our a la carte menu, we will do our best to adapt for their tastes. We reserve our earlier bookings for guests with young children.”

I know a family-friendly restaurant that can give you a stunning meal is a winner, but we did not go out with the kids and finally had an adult meal for the first time in months.

Pins on Lurline offers an intimate space for dinner
Pins on Lurline offers an intimate space for dinner

We opted for the Omnivore Tasting Menu if you are vegetarian there is a menu that you will love as well. Pins on Lurline have only two options for their menu at the moment a Tasting Menu that changes daily.

The menu works with local and fresh produce so you will always have a new and amazing food experience at Pins on Lurline.

Oh and if you are having a special celebration make sure you mention this when booking…we didn’t and only mentioned it on leaving. Executive Chef Adam Shaw will work his magic and add a special surprise for you during your dining experience.

When we entered the restaurant we were made to feel welcome and seated immediately. Due to restrictions, there were only a few tables of diners and it was a very intimate experience, so in a way perfect for an anniversary dinner.

Jody made sure we were all sorted and gave us some yummy freshly made bread and gave us our first glass of wine that will be paired with the first course (in the tasting menu we had 6 courses)

You can just have the tasting menu or have the tasting menu with the wine pairing and we did both.  I must admit due to not going anywhere for months this was a fantastic treat, and a great way to break the drought on not going to any restaurants or anywhere.

So if you are interested in costs: Tasting Menu $80, and the Wine Paring is $40

I must say after my six-course with tasty wines I was very full, I couldn’t have had sides as well. However, if you are a party of more than two people maybe a salad or some extra vegetables might be helpful.

What Did We Think?

We loved our time at Pins on Lurline from the moment we stepped inside the door. We were greeted warmly, nothing was a problem, our glasses were always topped up, any questions about the food where answered and we felt at home and comfortable.

The food was divine and was very high end. I was worried at first as the courses are smaller but with six dishes plus wines for each course you are full and there is no need to worry that you will leave hungry.

Our first journey out since lockdown was a highly successful one and it was a great place to celebrate our 16 year wedding anniversary…yes this is a long time to be married (however we’ve been together for over 20 years, just married for 16)

If you wish to go to somewhere that is impressive, has quality food and wine then Pins on Lurline is for you. Due to the restrictions on numbers, you will need to book to ensure you can get a table.

I loved my experience so much I had to share with you all and showcase a fantastic local business that is open and looking forward to seeing more people. If you are traveling or visiting the Blue Mountains make sure that you check out this amazing restaurant. You will not be disappointed.

Note: This is not a paid partnership. I live in the Blue Mountains and with the recent bushfires and now coronavirus we need to support as many local businesses to help them out.

Protecting Ourselves Against COVID-19

I know everyone is worried about getting COVID-19 (Coronavirus), but as we are out the city we thought that it might not come here or at the very least we would have limited exposure.

This has all changed as of last night. YEP, the new world order is making this thing very real. I did know that it was real, people have died, been very ill and have been isolated to make sure they are okay and will not infect others. SO yes, it is very real and has had disastrous consequences for businesses, the economy and individuals all over the world.

It is just horrible and I really wish that the scientists would magically find a cure in record time.

We’ve had stupid panic buying of toilet paper and one that I thought was silly until I realised our family might end up stuck at home. It could be a possibility.

And at 1 am this morning when I learnt that kids might be at home in the near future as a precaution I thought, “We don’t have enough of anything! and then said to hubby we need to buy toilet paper! This elicited a huge giggle and don’t be silly from him.”

Last night we had the local high school close, the music festival has been cancelled and the kid’s basketball has also been cancelled due to the possibility of the infection spreading.

Today the kids have gone to school and care due to no issue happening at either school. I just hope that they all remain healthy. One scenario that is worrying is if the kids do get sick and bring it back for mummy and daddy to get too.  We really don’t need to be sick and lockdown at the moment!

Today is all about tidying the house, sorting things out and seeing if we can get some order into our chaos at the moment. I am sitting here still needing to sort out my morning coffee and then to start the process of cleaning a fish tank…yes a process I am not going to enjoy but needs to be done.

I hope that the kids will be okay at school. I hope that no one at school is sick, I hope that no one we come into contact with is ill, it is just a horrible feeling of thinking that you don’t to leave the house but there are times that you have to.

We’ve given the kids a talk about washing their hands and not touching their face (plus not putting fingers into mouths), we have explained that whatever they touch or do they need to wash their hands. This might be harder with the four-year-old but we will do our best.

Follow these guidelines from WHO (World Health Organisation) to protect yourself against COVID-19 (Coronavirus)

Non-Stop Rain Creates Chaos

We’ve had a week of torrential rain and this weekend is no different.

The weather app has said that all week we’ve had 100% chance of rain at all hours, and next week is listed as rain. Some of the rain predicted for next week is not heavy and then on some days, it looks very bad. Currently, we have been induated with water!

Don’t get me wrong. I love the rain. We desperately needed the rain but I would like to find the off switch. I don’t want to turn it off for good, just to give us a little break and allow the water that has fallen to settle and to not give us an instant pool under the pergola.

Yep, we have lots of water falling and it is causing havoc now. Apparently it is the largest downpour since the 90’s

It seems like a horrible joke from nature. It wasn’t long ago that most of the country was on fire. Many lost their homes, were evacuated and some lost their lives. We were in severe crisis. Thank goodness that the fires have been put out by this heavy rain (I believe all have, however, I could be wrong) and now we are facing another form of disaster, and that would be flooding.

Due to the nature of the heavy rain and the fact that it has not stopped many places have been flooded, these include roads, parks, houses, businesses and everything in between.

In the Blue Mountains we have had huge tree fall across the highway at Springwood and blocking half the high the highway, tree fell near the Explor’s Tree and blocking both sides of the highway, and another tree in Mount Victoria has come down blocking the highway in block directions, and in  Cliff Drive Katoomba there has been a landslide.

So due to the weather, we’ve been inside and the kids are acting horribly.

I think they secretly got together to play an evil game on mummy and daddy…the game is to see how quickly can we make mummy and daddy go crazy and lose their shit!

Currently the kids are winning and I’ve lost count on how many times I’ve lost my temper at the silly and stupid behaviour.

I do understand the kids are bored but it is getting to the point of annoyance as each kid wants to do something different, then the youngest wants to join in, then the older kids don’t want their little brother wants to join in and this doesn’t end well. Fighting ensues, yelling and the little person then lashes out with hurting his sisters. Oh, the joys of being inside due to non-stop rain!

Now if I had the stop button to give us a break from the rain I would press it now! would press the start button again I promise.  However, I would love a little break from this torrential downpour!  Maybe I could send the rain to a place that needs it and give us a break until we need some rain again?

Oh and another thought, will my plants be okay with all this rain? I know that they are probably loving it due to the heatwave we had, water restrictions and of course no rain for ages (drought), so this rain is well and truly welcomed.  A little rain would be great to help and then more, but if they get too much will this cause other issues for my garden? I do know that last time we had a huge downpour after a dry spell one of our long time trees died.  I don’t think anybody would have predicted we would be now facing flooding and rain that doesn’t stop!

I’m just hoping that all this rain is getting into our dams.  Currently, Sydney and surrounds are not at full capacity so in the days ahead lets hope that the water falls over the dam!

When the rain finally does decide to stop the soil, parks and everywhere will be so damp that taking kids to the park will not be a good idea either, it could be a possibility if they covered head to toe in wet weather gear and gumboots.

How are you faring in this wet weather? Have you been flooded? Or dealing with a blackout?

Are you coping with trying to keep the kids occupied?

Also when the rain finally decides to stop taking kids outside will be a messy experience, all the parks and grounds will be so wet and soaked. The only way they can play will be if they are covered head to toe in rain weather gear and gumboots.

Please stay safe everyone and if you don’t need to leave your house it is wise to stay indoors. I know the kids and you might already have cabin fever but you don’t want to end up stuck somewhere or in fact be caught in a flooded area.

Winter Wonderland

Today we woke to snow everywhere. Yes we were snowed in. The depth of the snow was about 15cms and 30cms in parts. Very deep for up here. The whole area has been blanketed by white bright snow. As I write this the snow is slowly melting and we are all enjoying a hot cuppa, well the kids are having a hot Milo.

Our snow filled street

The other end of the street. Covered in snow and it felt like a magical playground today.
The other end of the street. Covered in snow and it felt like a magical playground today.

School was closed, the roads were closed and we could not go anywhere. Hubby could not get to work and was able to enjoy the snow day with all of us. Most times when it snows he misses out so it is finally nice to the whole family home on this occasion.

Our snowed in letterbox. No mail today!

I know this might be cold for most of you but the temperature has just hit 2 degrees so it is slowly getting warmer (well it was when I started writing this post at about 2ish this afternoon). I did see a big black cloud on our walk with the neighbours to the local oval and was told that we might get some rain this afternoon/evening.

The kids and I with their first snowman

I do like the snow but due needing to pick up tiles in Penrith tomorrow having it melt might allow the roads to be reopened and for us to get them. We were lucky and the roads opened up late this afternoon and we managed to pick up the tiles so no need to worry.

After we got home from getting the tiles, Hubby helped the kids build a second snowman. Hope it is there still in the morning.

I must say today was a magical adventure and it was lovely that we could all be here to witness the snow and be involved with it. It was also nice that the kids and hubby were not at school or work and we all had a great day together.

Did it snow at your place? I heard it snowed in Queensland as well. Apparently this is the biggest fall of snow we have had since 1984. Yes, amazing isn’t it!

Let us know if you had a snow day today.

Appliance Failures – Why All At Once?

Today we are staying home. I do like staying home, especially in school holidays. However when you need to stay home to wait for a delivery it can get quite frustrating. Frustrating due to not knowing when your delivery will arrive.

The delivery driver called earlier to say they will be here in the afternoon, so I have an idea. I just hope that they get here before 4pm so I can go to an appointment. Yes I had to make an appointment this afternoon as I could not get in any other time. Annoying really.

Why is it that due to having to be home all day you can think of a million and one things you would rather be doing, and they are of course not at home or waiting for my delivery!

I hear you ask, “What am I waiting for?”  Well it is a much needed clothes dryer.

No more waiting for sunshine. A dryer will mean I can dry my clothes when it is wet and stormy! Cannot wait.
No more waiting for sunshine. A dryer will mean I can dry my clothes when it is wet and stormy! Cannot wait.

Mine decided to die and I have been making do with hanging clothes everywhere inside the house and on the line. However this falls down when you have days and days of non-stop rain! As you can imagine living in the Blue Mountains having a dryer is a necessity not a want or item that you can say no to. Without one most of the clothes generally don’t dry due to wet and very cold days.

I am very excited to be getting a new dryer and happy that I can finally have items dried when I want them to be.   I am getting sick of living in a house that looks more like a laundry or a very messy clothes shop!

My new dryer is smart. It can sense how long to dry clothes for, and will not run for hours and hours if it is just a pair of jeans, or some towels that need to be dry. How clever is this! Keen to try out this fab feature.

So I am very happy that my dryer is on its way, but I hate waiting nearly all day to get it. Do you have days like this? Waiting for a delivery. I must say it is not all bad. I am doing some housework, responding to emails, and kids are happy playing outside as it is finally sunny again.

Now that I finally get a replacement dryer I bet that the weather will be super sunny and no more rain. What do you think?

Today might not be the only day waiting to get a replacement item. Our television has also died and we are using a computer screen monitor in place of a large screen TV. The twins were rather shocked as it is very small compared to the BIG Plasma screen we previously had. Hubby and I explained that this is not bad and it was the same size that we had before the big screens. This was met with dismay and annoyance from the kids (I see you are shocked at this – it did make us laugh). The twins have never known a small T.V. and have only had the large flat screens. It was interesting seeing their reaction to this change.

Oh and I forgot to mention that our toaster also decided it did not want to work anymore and the kettle fell to bits! I think the white-goods and electrical items at our house are giving up! Maybe they are on strike! Should I hold a meeting and see if I can negotiate a better deal so they keep working and we don’t have to spend money on replacements? I wonder?

It has been four items in quick succession that have stopped working or had a failure:

  • Television
  • Dryer
  • Toaster
  • Kettle (this just fell to bits. The handle and the wiring just perished) We noticed this one last, but the first 3 were right after each other.

While we ponder what television to purchase next we will use our computer monitor as it is serving the purpose for now.

Are you going through a stage where your white goods are on their way out? Have you had a string of things die and need to be replaced? Let us know.

Let us know your thoughts. Why not continue the discussion on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

The Hdyro is Glam Once More

The Hydro Majestic is an icon, and a wonderful old hotel that is located in Medlow Bath in the Blue Mountains of NSW, Australia. It has a long and interesting history.

Did you know?

  • The hotel began as the Belgravia Hotel which was fully complete in 1891. It was created as a health retreat.

The Belgravia Hotel in 1910. Image from Wikipedia
The Belgravia Hotel in 1910. Image from Wikipedia

  • Mark Foy who was a wealthy retailer purchased the hotel in 1902 and wanted to create a hydropathic sanatorium due to the belief that under the land there was mineral springs. (It was found that the springs did not exist and possibly if they did it had dried up years ago. Mark Foy had mineral water imported from Germany. Fancy the cost of doing this! Apparently the water was imported in steel containers and when it arrived tasted terribe! Yes how awful after doing all this. Although guests were told to drink the water due to it being good for their health)
  • Mark Foy successfully petitioned the NSW government to change the name of the town from Medlow as it was at the time to the now name of Medlow Bath. I did not know that there was another town called Medlow and Foy wanted to have no confusion over the name. However some think he wanted the name change to make the town and area sound more prestigious. (I suppose you cannot blame him)
  • In WWII the building was turned into a hospital for US Troops
  • The hotel has heritage listing and got it in 1984.
  • In 2008 the hotel was purchased by The Escarpment Group. It has been closed since 2008 and has been refurbished and updated to bring it back to its former glory.

The Escarpment Group has worked tirelessly to bring this much loved part of history back to her glory days. “A team of highly revered heritage experts, architecture specialists and designers were enlisted, with particular weight given to examining and respecting the Hydro Majestic’s social history and heritage. The plans add the 21st Century layer, mindful of the past, but always with a vision of the future.” (Hyrdo Majestic Website)

The girls have always known the Hydro as what looked like a castle. I have been there before but the former owners did not do the place justice. It was run down, terrible and just a poor reflection of what it could be. I was so excited to know that a group had invested the money, time and energy into making her glow again not just for their gain but for the area.

I have thought that the dome on the casino reminds me of Taronga Zoo, well the older part of the Zoo. It could be similar architecture but it makes me think of the time I went to the zoo with my grandad.

Having the Hydro up and working again is great for the Blue Mountains and for Medlow Bath. It draws people to the area, it shows you what can be done, allows crafts and produce from locals to be sold, gives locals more jobs and of course we now have a lovely venue for lunches, teas, drinks and conferences/gatherings again.

The first part of the hotel re-opening is the food and store house or otherwise known as the Hydro Pavilion. The pavilion is where you can buy local produce and goods that is all from the Blue Mountains and surrounds. I cannot wait to go there and to check it all out.

This weekend the Hydro is having High Teas in The Wintergarden like they did last weekend as they are slowing opening all areas soon. I would have loved to have gone but think with two kids a fancy high tea would have been wasted on them. I am waiting to book with the Boiler room for lunch.

By the end of the year the second part of the refurbishment should be finished and the accommodation will be open for the public. Cannot wait for that to happen. It has been a big job and I must say that it looks amazing from the driving back and forth I have been doing.

The kids always comment when we drive past, “Mummy, they are working today! Geez mummy they are doing a good job!” “Wow, they have the roof on mummy!” “Look, windows and lights now!”

The girls have marveled at all the changes just like we have. It has been amazing to watch!

I have made a promise to the twins that when it opens I will take them to the new hotel. They are super excited and cannot wait to go and explore and see all the changes close up. The pictures are just lovely to drool over and I so see myself in a fancy dress sipping a cocktail or two here. (A night with just hubby and me is in order soon)

Looking At Things Differently

The other day one of my girls asked what fog was again. I replied saying, “It is low lying cloud” Both girls said, Oh yes that’s right it is cloud. We forgot!

Foggy Day in the Blue Mountains
Foggy Day in the Blue Mountains

One of the girls then said the following:

“That fog is lazy mummy! It does not want to go into the sky and would rather be on the ground! Lazy Fog!”

Maybe she is right? Fog could be the lazy clouds that want to lie about and do nothing? The clouds that are in the sky are achievers and go getters? Maybe the clouds that are fog are just taking a well deserved break? Everyone needs time out don’t you think? This announcement that their is lazy fog made us all giggle and laugh for a while. It was a very funny moment.

Have you had moments that you have looked at things differently? The child who told me about the lazy clouds asked if she was right. I did not have the heart to tell her that her theory might not be 100% and thought it was a clever way to explain it.

What has changed your thinking or view on things? Was it something your little ones said? Or your partner/friends. Let us know.

Observed Bush Fire Damage

The view on our walk to Anvil Rock
The view on our walk to Anvil Rock

Yesterday the family and I took a drive. We continued along Hat Hill Road at Blackheath and just wondered where certain roads went. We ended up at Anvil Rock and did the bush walk.

During the drive we noticed the amount of trees that had burnt in the bush fires. For a long time the fire did not cross the road and that seemed like ages, however there was a point where it did and we looked at the devastation and just though how horrific it would have been.

Once we were up on the rock we had a great view and were able to see the trees that had burnt and others that were lucky to still be green. Although there was kilometre after kilometre of burnt trees in the middle of the ash and charcoal there was green growth sprouting.

It is another thing to be told about the fire and another thing entirely too actually see what it did to the land. It was shocking. Have you had a moment when you are faced with something like this, you hear about an event but have not seen the result of it in the flesh? How did it change you when you were face to face with the impact of a disaster? I was in tears at one point as it really brought home how close it really was. One change of the wind and it would have headed our way.

We were very lucky indeed. The firefighters did a tough job and I and the community are extremely grateful for their long hours and hard work.

I’m not sure what the count on land that got burnt, but the community is all o.k. No lives were lost and that is great news. Not great I know if you lost your house, and I think that would be tragic and I would be very upset if that had happened. I feel for people in this situation.

Contrary to public opinion The Blue Mountains is open and ready for business. Nearly all areas are green and have wonderful views and you would never know that we had a bush fire. We just saw an area that got affected yesterday. If you are wanting to get away from it all, don’t think that there is damage everywhere, all is fine.  Pack your bags and take your holiday, long weekend or conference here.  The Blue Mountains is a great place to be and to visit.

Mountains V’s Beach. Which is best?

I grew up in North Queensland, Hervey Bay to be precise. My childhood consisted of playing outdoors, cycling on my push bike, swimming, snorkelling and outdoor activities.

Summer is my favourite season and I adore the heat, so why do I now live in Katoomba in the Blue Mountains? Where most of the time it is wet, freezing, cold, gale force winds and just miserable. There is a small window where it nice; warm or hot that you could think it was summer but for me it never lasts long enough; and sometimes we never get a summer and it feels like it is constantly winter!

Katoomba in Winter.
Katoomba in Winter.

I have been in the Blue Mountains for over ten years now and has the environment rubbed off on me? Do I still yearn for the beach, the sun and the all round great weather?

Well the answer is Yes, I still long for the beach and all that goes with it. You cannot change how you grew up and what you long for.

I’m sure that you think that the mountains cannot be so bad. It does have some great things going for it:

  • Great air to breathe.
  • Outdoor spaces to play in and to use. Walks, climbing and parks.
  • You can see stars that you will not see in the city or in built up areas.
  • Greater value for houses and real estate, allows you to get a foot hold in the property market.
  • Live closer to nature. Surrounded by national parks and nature.
  • Experience four seasons and sometimes just one. In October 2012 we had deep snow and it was freezing (see image gallery below). It did not snow in winter but waited till Spring to do this.
  • Cooler in summer compared to the city. This is great if you like the heat but don’t to get too hot.
  • Feels like we live in tourist central, this gives us more choice and infrastructure to our area.

One of the main reasons that I am in the Blue Mountains is due to my hubby. He cannot stand the heat and deals with the cold better. So I love the heat and I hate the cold. In summer in Katoomba the temperature is warm and sometimes hot but not as bad as it would be in the city. This is a good compromise, however I wish it would work better for me in winter.

I brave the freezing cold for my hubby, how nice of me. What have you done for your partner?

The view from our room at the QT on the Gold Coast.
The view from our room at the QT on the Gold Coast.

What is so wonderful about the beach and warmer weather?

  • Better climate to allow more activities to happen year round rather than just certain times of the year.
  • Makes me feel great and energised.
  • Love the salt water.
  • Love the smell of the sand, sea and the idea that the days seem endless.
  • Due to better climate more outdoor activity can be had.

As I write this I am in my hotel room on the Gold Coast. It has been a lovely hot day and just enjoyable weather. I can smell the sea air and it just makes me feel good. Feels like home. I am pleased that I am getting my fix for what I long for, and hope that I can repeat it soon.

The mountains has great qualities also, the fog that makes it so appealing. The trees that change colour in autumn and look so pretty in their reds, browns, and yellows. I know the whole dynamic of the Blue Mountains would change if it was constantly warm and sunny. There would be no curling up in front of the open fire and snuggling with your hot chocolate or skinny cap or maybe a glass of port.

Mind you I do like these things in the mountains, but I hate the cold, and cannot stand dealing with the layers of clothes that is needed to stay warm.

I  have decided that I don’t like winter and never will. I love and hang out for summer, summer holidays, Christmas and spending time at the beach, pool and just being outdoors.

What are your thoughts? What is wonderful about the mountains or the beach? What is your favourite?

Blue Mountains Bicentenary Flyover

Toy Plane - Ready for the flyover
Toy Plane – Ready for the flyover

Tomorrow we will experience the Blue Mountains Bicentenary Flyover, and I cannot wait. The last two days it has been foggy, wet and of course rain so not the best weather, so hoping that tomorrow we will be able to see some planes. It is between the hours 10.00am – 2.00pm, so that at least gives you enough time to be part of it all.

Residents and visitors will be able to enjoy this spectacular event with more than 60 aircraft including the famous RAAF Roulettes from recommended viewing locations (see “Community Events” page for activities at each location): 1. MELROSE HALL PARK – Emu Plains, from 11.00am, 2. GLENBROOK PARK – Glenbrook, 7am – 2pm, 3. FAULCONBRIDGE PUBLIC SCHOOL – Faulconbridge, 8am – 2pm, 4. LAWSON PUBLIC SCHOOL – Lawson, 10.30am – 1.30pm, 5. BLUE MOUNTAINS GRAMMAR SCHOOL – Wentworth Falls, 10am – 2pm, 6. THE CARRINGTON HOTEL – Katoomba, paid event brunch $60pp, 10.30am – 1.30pm, 7. MELROSE PARK – North Katoomba, 7am – 1pm, 8. THE GARDENS – Blackheath, 11am – 2pm, 9. MOUNT VICTORIA MEMORIAL PARK – Mount Victoria, 11am – 2pm, 10. HARTLEY HISTORIC SCHOOL – Hartley, 10am – 3pm, 11. O’CONNELL AVENUE CAFE & STORE – O’Connell, 11am – 2pm.

It is a wonderful event and cannot wait to be a witness to it. I will not be here for the next one in another 200 years. According to the organisers, the flyover is a celebration for:

“To celebrate the 1813 crossing by the three explorers, the 2013 Bicentenary will be a crossing by air, the first ever flyover for the Blue Mountains and the largest ever civilian flyover in Australia.”

For viewing sites:

1. Melrose Hall Park, Emu Plains

2. Glenbrook Park, Glenbrook

3. Faulconbridge Public School, Faulconbridge

4. Lawson Public School, Lawson

5. Blue Mountains Grammar School, Wentworth Falls

6. The Carrington Hotel (Chimney), Katoomba

7. Melrose Park, Katoomba North

8. The Gardens, Blackheath

9. Mount Victoria Memorial Park, Mount Victoria

10. Hartley Historic School, Hartley

11. O’Connell Avenue Cafe & Store, O’Connell

The girls at pre-school were creating paper planes and colouring in pictures of planes. They are obviously getting into the spirit of the flyover. Are you going to be at any of the sites to witness the celebrations?

I hope to be with the twins so they can see

Traffic Chaos

We left the house at 8.57am, normally driving by 9am. So all good, happy that we are all on time, and that kids are not being naughty. I was pleased and happy until the car was at a standstill and I realised that there had been an accident. We were not going anywhere. How annoying! I was just off to drop kids at school and go home and maybe some chores but did not factor in waiting in traffic for hours. A truck had overturned and blocked traffic, we passed the truck and it was a sight to see, you don’t often see trucks lying down.

I finally got to the pre-school at about 9.45am so that is nearly 45mins to drive 10mins down the road. As the road was in chaos I decided to go to the post office around the corner from the school as I thought I would never make it to my local one. I was right. I went in and did what I had to do at the post office and it only took me 5mins. Raced back to the car to see if I could start the process of getting home. I ended up waiting in traffic for over an hour to just get to the next suburb and that was better than what faced others in the opposite direction. As I drove towards Katoomba Township I noticed that all the cars going the other way were bumper to bumper, and it extended well past Blackheath, Medlow Bath, and well into the start of Katoomba according to the sign on the highway.

After I managed to get out of the traffic I popped in to deliver an invite to the girls party, and found out via a friend that the truck that had the accident at midnight last night. Also from another friend I found out that it was there at 1am, so why was it still causing an issue at 9am the same day? Why is this not cleared away when it happened? If the accident got cleared up in the early hours of the morning it would not have held up traffic and caused so much interruption. I do hope that the driver of the truck is o.k, and all is well there, but I just don’t understand why it was left to affect the lives of everyone the next day.

Not sure when the traffic was cleared as the pickup from school was weird as it was easy to get there and the accident was all cleared. I was very grateful that the traffic had eased and you could get back and forth easily. We only have one road in and one road out, so blocking a road or having hold ups is just not manageable, especially when I need to drop kids and pick them up from school.

Do know why the police or emergency services would have left the truck and waited until peak hour to fix the issue? I do not understand why it was not taken off the road when it happened, I do not know how the driver is and as stated, I hope that he/she is fine and well. Maybe emergency services had to wait to have vehicles assist to move the truck?  If you have worked in emergency services and know why this clean up would have been delayed, let us know.

I also think it would be nice to have an alternate route in case of emergency situations like this; maybe we can work on a road that we can use if this happens again. Do any locals in the area know of a road I could have taken? Is there a back way that I don’t know of? I for one don’t and would just stick to the highway. Send in your comments.

First day at Pre-School

Julia and Lillian - First Day of Pre-School
Julia and Lillian - First Day of Pre-School

The first day at pre-school went really well, although the girls were  bit shy when we got there, hearing about the slippery dip made the girls skip and run out to play without a thought to us.  We then made our leave quickly.  I was a bit sad but also happy that they are at this stage to go to school to learn more. I am also to even happier to getting some time off without the kids, it is a god sent.

This morning it was blue skies, sun and wonderful summer heat. This nice weather was a false alarm and was about to change to our big surprise. We ended up having a huge thunder storm that drenched us in so much water and hail. It was just so intense. The storm lasted over an hour and it seemed to be getting heavier and harder throughout the storm. James was home as he wanted to be here for the girls first day of pre-school was helping me run around the house to see if we were really water tight, and all was o.k. We seemed o.k, but we just watched in amazement at how the hail was failing and how quickly the water was flowing down the street and our driveway.

People here have put out their junk for council clean up and a chair opposite was floating down the street. We cringed as we both thought that it was going to slide into on coming traffic. This was not something we could witness, however it was what we imagined might happen. Also would the driver or the onlooker think, where did the person of the chair go?

Just to give you an idea of how intense the storm was, here are some articles of what happened today. The sports centre in Katoomba has had roof damage and water damage, other stores and houses have damage as well, “Patrons evacuated after roof collapse“, “Thunderstorms hit Blue Mountains“,  and “Blue Mountains lashed by heavy hail“.

I was thinking of how the girls were doing all day, and also thinking of what I could get done in the time I had to myself. I must say. Not much got done. I tidied the kitchen but now it is a mess again, so will do it again tomorrow. I managed to put fresh sheets on all beds, so that is a good thing and nice. However there are a lot more things to do. The plan is to get the place in order to allow myself to do what I want to do with the days the girls are at pre-school. This running around like a mad woman all days that I have off is not going to happen this year. I promise myself I will try and get organised to get things done. I know easier said than done. It will get better once I get some time to get rooms done and sorted. This way it will feel like things are actually happening and there is actual action. Although I do, do things, after cleaning, tidying, playing with kids and then looking at the house, you think it is in the same or worse state than before. I am sure you have all been there.

Daddy's necklace by Lillian
Daddy's necklace by Lillian

Oh well, after the storm and the darkness went more sunshine came out. Cruel weather, just after I had taken all the clothes off the line, yet again. This change was most welcome as we had to go and collect the girls. We made it and were in fact early, which was nice. We waited with the other parents for the doors to open at the end of class. Once the doors opened, the girls saw daddy and I waiting for them. They yelled,”Daddy” and raced over to hug him. He was then told by Lillian that she had made a necklace for him and he must wear it. She was trying to find it in the cardboard folder that had her name on it. All the kids have one and they are stored at the front of the school so that parents can see what the child has been doing and take artwork home but leave the folder at the school. I opened the folder to find that the teacher had put the necklace in her folder. Julia told me that she did not make one. Lillian then put it on daddy. He wore it for the rest of the day.

The girls told us that they painted, played on the slippery dip and slid down on their bellies, met a girl called Mia, and had a great day, and of course Lillian made daddy a necklace, it is a pasta necklace with the end being a pasta whistle. All very clever, and all her design she told me.

Both girls are looking forward to going back tomorrow and I am pleased that they had such a great time and want to go back. Now tomorrow will be action day for me and so will Wednesday. At least it will be well spent organising. I did want to go to aqua aerobics on Wednesday but that is at the aquatic centre that has roof damage from today’s storm, so I guess that is off limits until fixed.  Now off to organise the girls lunch boxes for tomorrow.

How do you manage the time when you child is in care/school do you run around like a mad person trying to get all things done? Is it something that you cherish and the hell with housework? Do you make a comprise and do one room and then give yourself a break? Any ideas or techniques please send my way. This way we can all learn and help each other.
