Why is it my job to organise everything for Christmas?

Why is it that the wife or female partner seems to organise everything for Christmas.

Some of the things that are left to me are:

  • Planning and buying Christmas Presents
  • Cleaning and tidying the house
  • Organising the kids
  • Wrapping the presents
  • Mailing the presents
  • Buying and cooking the food
  • Making the food
Let's hope that my presents look this nice once wrapped up. I'm sure no one will care once they rip off the paper to get to the present.
Let’s hope that my presents look this nice once wrapped up. I’m sure no one will care once they rip off the paper to get to the present.

My family only buy for the kids. The adults have everything they need or want, and I suppose if someone really needs something they either buy it themselves or might get it as a gift from others at a later stage.

Since my family is sorted and I just need to get kids presents then this leaves hubby’s family.

Hubby’s family buy for everyone which is nice, but if you are me and have limited time and really not sure what to get people it is hard indeed.

There are only so many times you can get someone a cup or another item that will get pushed to the back of the cupboard, and possibly never used.

I like to get people something different, interesting gifts that they would not get for themselves. I also love to buy things that people will use, want and need.

Buying people gifts that they will indeed need and use is hard when you are not sure what they have or really would like for Christmas.

I tried to employ a tactic this year to make hubby get responsible for his families present buying. He used the excuse that he is busy with work and therefore doesn’t have any time to do this shopping. He also used the other angle of not knowing what to purchase.

Geeez like I am a present seer and can know exactly what is in people’s brains. Maybe I am. Maybe I have an inner gift or special skill that I am unaware of.

One approach I used was to say that since hubby was near a big shopping centre he could go to Thursday late night shopping. Shop alone and without kids, think about what to get and then secretly bring it all back. This I thought would alleviate stress and make things easier on both of us.

He, of course, did not like this idea….. typical I thought.

I still don’t see why running around like a mad person to get things for everyone is all up to me!

Due to not getting the time to touch base of what I had already purchased and to think of what items we give to what family member it is hard to know what we still need to purchase.

Today I managed to get hubby to see all the things I have already got and we did a stocktake of items we still need to get.

Due to hubby not willing to do the shopping and the fact that Christmas is nearly here, I said the following:

“If you are not willing to go and get the shopping for your family, and now the kids are on holiday it makes it harder for me. I’m not taking the kids shopping with me to finalise the present shopping. I’ll go on Saturday and do it on my own. You mind the kids and I will have the day to get it done”

So I have spent a day by myself at the shops mostly trying to get the missing presents we needed.

I took a break from shopping to have some food and a much-needed coffee. Yummy!
I took a break from shopping to have some food and a much-needed coffee. Yummy!

Being out by myself today is a good outcome of having to do the present shopping. I get a well-deserved break. Quiet time and can finally enter shops without telling kids to not touch things and be always on alert.

It is a very hot day and I have finally found a place that is air-conditioned to have a cool drink and a snack before I get the final present and then food for the house.

I think next year I will go on strike and hubby can organise everything.

Being in a paid job is not the only criteria for being busy and not having time to get things done. I have three kids, until recently they were in school and due to the end of the year, there were functions to be at which meant I had to be at the school until about 11am. This then meant that I had less than an hour to get something done for me and then to be back at school for 2.55pm.

Now kids are on holiday I cannot get things done without taking them with me. The baby will still be going to care so that is a plus and I’m grateful for that.

I too have a job (I blog) and have deadlines and commitments. It is a hard juggle and like any working mum would tell you it is busy.

Have you had the chat to your boyfriend/husband or partner about why it seems like it is all up to you? Have you put your hands in the air and declared that you are on strike?

I think a strike is needed next year.

I am so tired and there still more to do:

  • Cleaning the house
  • Removing clutter
  • Wrapping presents
  • And possibly much more than I have forgotten about now.

Does this happen at your house?

You are the one that organises everything for everybody? I am exhausted and it is not Christmas yet.

Or do you share the Christmas organsiation at your place?  Let us know how it works?

I am glad that I have had some time alone but could have lived without racing around getting last minute gifts.

Make Mango Pudding

MangoPudding2_blog

I love mango pudding and always order it when I have yum cha.

What is your favourite dessert to order?

Nothing finishes off a nice meal than a lovely pudding and if it is Mango Pudding it is even better, especially when it tastes of such lovely sweet and tasty mangoes.

Ingredients

  • 4 to 6 very ripe mangoes. I used 5. Peeled and diced, or 5 cups of frozen mango bits (make sure they are thawed before you start) you can get very fresh mangoes to make it even tastier.
  • 395 grams of non-fat sweetened condensed milk
  • Half a cup of water
  • 4 tablespoons of lime juice
  • Gelatine Powder, 4 and a half teaspoons -Use powder and you can see the reason why below
  • Containers or bowls for the mixture to set in. If you wish to remove and serve on a plate for a party you can spray a little bit of oil so that the pudding comes out easily.

In my recipe I have, it listed 2 envelopes of unflavoured gelatin or say 4 and a half teaspoons. I purchased McKenzie’s Gelatine Leaves which are sheets of gelatine and therefore could not put it in a teaspoon as it was not a powder. I looked online and found that McKenzie’s website had a recipe for pannacotta which would have a similar consistency as the mango pudding and it listed using 6 sheets. I used 6 gelatine leaves and it came out very nice and firm, but I think if I used another 2, so 8 sheets in total it would have been very firm like the ones at yum cha. I should have used the powder and will do so next time.

Chopping up fresh and very ripe mangoes
Chopping up fresh and very ripe mangoes

Method

1. I cut up my mangoes first and put all the flesh into a bowl and discarded the peel. I could not help myself but had to have a bit of some as I made this. The smell was overwhelming (the kitchen smelt divine!) and just reminded me of home, Queensland and being a kid. I love mangoes!

Make sure that you put the mangoes in a food processor and make them all smooth. I used a stick blender to zap the mangos and it worked a treat.

2. Once all the mangoes were sorted I tidied up my mess as mangoes seemed to go everywhere.

3. I added the lime juice to the mangoes

4. I got the gelatine sorted. If you have the gelatine leaves you need to soak them in half a cup of water to melt them a bit and then zap them in the microwave until they have melted. It is best to have them in a bowl that can go in the microwave and make sure that after a minute of soaking that you only put the gelatine in the microwave for 10-20secs at a time. This will make sure that you are not boiling the mixture just melting the gelatine.

5. Add the condensed milk and then the gelatine to the mango mixture.

6. Add mixture to your containers and then put in the fridge for 2 hours to set. If you are making this for a party it might be best to do it the day before, this way you will ensure that the puddings are set and there is no need to worry.

All ready to set in the fridge. Mango pudding will be my dessert tonight!

Recipes for a dinner party

Entree – San Choy Bau

Main – Colourful Dumplings

Dessert – Mango Pudding

Tasting the finished product. It tasted amazing and so mangoey. Loved it and will give it another go. I was very happy as it was my first attempt at making Mango Pudding.

Cirque du Soleil’s LUZIA – Artistry that Takes Your Breath Away

Last Wednesday we were privileged to attend the premiere of Cirque du Soleil’s LUZIA. I remember when I was younger going to Cirque du Soleil shows with my mum and my sister, they were so magical and I wanted to share this with my children. One thing that is good about Cirque du Soleil is that it is a circus without animals.

About Cirque du Soleil?

In the early 1980s, a group of performers led by Gilles Ste-Croix showcased their talent on the streets of Baie-Saint-Paul, a picturesque village along the St. Laurent River near Quebec City. Initially known as Les Échassiers de Baie-Saint-Paul (The Stiltwalkers of Baie-Saint-Paul), this group became the foundation for what would later evolve into Cirque du Soleil. Learn more about the history of Cirque du Soleil on their website.

What is LUZIA About?

LUZIA is often described as a “waking dream of Mexico.” It takes audiences on a journey through vibrant landscapes. The show also features surreal settings and awe-inspiring acrobatics. The show includes everything from a cascading waterfall to jaw-dropping aerial acts. Each element is designed to transport you to a world where dreams meet reality.

Discover the Magic: About Cirque du Soleil’s LUZIA

The show opens with a man (who is the clown of the show) falling from the sky, hinting at a daring leap from a plane. The roar of an engine fills the air as a powerful wind sweeps across the stage, sucking up his backpack and belongings, sending them straight to the top of the tent. Amid the chaos, he humorously deploys a tiny umbrella, somehow managing to land safely on the stage—a moment that earns plenty of laughs from the audience.

The clown turns the key and starts the show.

As he regains his footing, he notices a massive key embedded in the stage. Curious, he looks around for its owner but finds no one. Turning the key unleashes a thunderous noise, setting off a chain reaction of movements and events that start the show.

Among his possessions is an empty metal water bottle, symbolising his desperate need for water. This quest becomes a recurring theme, cleverly interwoven into both the narrative and comedic skits throughout the show.

The show was broken into different acts and in between each act the man who is searching for water came along and did a skit or two to allow the other performers to set up for another performance.

During the performances you were not sure where to look, there was so much amazing things going on, dance, acrobatics and just stunning costumes to look at, not to mention the amazing sets!

The LUZIA performance was a captivating display of acrobatics and stunning visuals, with one scene in particular reminding my children of a moment from the Madagascar 3 film. The act combining hoop diving with two giant treadmills was striking, as the acrobats leaped through hoops with remarkable precision, much like the scene in Madagascar where the circus tiger interacts with small hoops. The performers, balancing on the moving treadmills, effortlessly jumped through hoops in a variety of daring ways—sometimes feet first, sometimes backwards, and even leapfrogging over each other. It was a mesmerizing combination of agility and speed, creating the illusion that they were defying gravity, just like the acrobats in the movie performing with such ease and fluidity.

The Cyr Wheel and Trapeze act was equally mesmerizing. The performers danced through large, majestic hoops while a trapeze artist executed daring flips and aerial moves. The acrobat balancing on one heel, suspended in mid-air, was a particularly striking moment, adding a dreamlike quality to the performance.

The Football Dance was another standout, with the performers skillfully manipulating soccer balls with their feet and heads. Their ability to bounce, roll, and spin the balls using only their bodies created a seamless and fluid performance, almost making the soccer balls appear as if they were floating in mid-air.

In the Aerial Straps act, the performer emerged from a cenote, interacting with a life-size jaguar puppet in a beautiful display of strength and grace. The performer rotated above the water, creating an ethereal moment that felt like they were gliding through space.

The Hand Balancing act was another remarkable highlight, where the artist balanced on flexible canes, gradually building the structure to an impressive height. The strength and control required to perform these feats was astounding, leaving the audience in awe as the artist maintained such challenging poses.

As for the Beach Clown scene, my youngest had the most amusing reaction when the clown finally found water in a pool, only for it to suddenly disappear. With wide eyes, they yelled, “How did that happen!” It was such a funny and unexpected moment, bringing a lighthearted touch to the show.

During one of the clown’s search for water, the water was actually flowing from behind him, and one kid from the audience yelled out, “It’s behind you!” The whole audience erupted in laughter at the perfect timing of the moment. The clown, ever so quick-witted, turned around and exaggerated his surprise with a playful expression, as if realizing it for the first time. He then comically gestured with his face and hands, giving the impression that he was pretending to be oblivious to the water behind him, as if asking, “Do you think I’m silly?” It was such a funny, spontaneous moment that had everyone in stitches, making it one of the highlights of the show! There was a hilarious moment with a poor man who kept trying to reach the water to fill up his bottle, but just as he got close, the water would stop flowing. As you might have guessed, the water would magically start flowing again… but only when he was nowhere near it! His attempts to outsmart the situation were absolutely priceless, as he would dash to a new spot, only for the water to follow him in the most unexpected way. His growing frustration and clever antics had the entire audience in stitches, making it one of the funniest parts of the show.

One of the most impressive moments in LUZIA was when an acrobat performed an aerial act where she was suspended solely by her hair. It was truly awe-inspiring to watch. I can’t even begin to imagine how strong and controlled you would have to be to pull off such a feat. The precision and power needed to balance in mid-air by just her hair were mind-blowing, and it left the entire audience in complete amazement. It was one of those moments that made you truly appreciate the incredible strength and discipline of the performers. Plus, how strong her hair must be to support her.

You Have to Go to Believe How Amazing It Is!

LUZIA is truly a must-see.

The show leaves you speechless, as you can’t help but stare in awe at the incredible talent of the performers. From the breathtaking acrobatics to the magical, otherworldly atmosphere, it’s an experience that transports you to a completely different realm. You find yourself sitting on the edge of your seat, watching these amazing people perform fantastical tricks, each one more mesmerizing than the last. It’s the kind of show that stays with you long after the final curtain call.

Transform your space easily with Photowall

I always thought adding wallpaper to your walls was super hard.

That you had to have special skills or qualifications to add it to your walls.

I had no idea that it was so easy to add wallpaper to a room and in turn that it is really simple to easily transform your space.

Wallpaper nowadays comes in so many different patterns, images as well and of course traditional flower and geometric shapes too. You can even upload your own image to create a unique one of a kind wallpaper. Some of the wallpaper is better described as wall murals or artwork as it is more like images stuck to the wall, but as wallpaper.

Where do you get this amazing wallpaper from?

Photowall is where I purchased my wallpaper and they have so many amazing designs to choose from. I got lost in the possibilities and the wonder of what each would look like in my house. I am now tempted to put wallpaper in all my rooms now!

If you need inspiration, Photowall has plenty to give you. Just check out all the different collections, suggestions on what is popular and other ideas from the Photowall website.

Does Photowall just sell wallpaper?

Photowall also has prints and canvases as well. You can purchase the prints on their own or get them with a frame as well, or add your own image to a print or canvas.

If you are looking for a gift  Photowall has prints that you can get framed and also wallpaper to instantly transform your space super quick.

Smoothing out the joins with the seam roller – We found this tool really handy and it works so much better than your hands

Except for our own level, the picture shows all items that you get in the Wallpaper Kit

Make sure you get the Wallpaper Kit

Make sure that you add the wallpaper kit when you purchase your wallpaper. It really helped us. However, the one item that we used that was ours was our own level (which is shown in yellow in the above image). The wallpaper kit comes with a level but ours was better for the job.

The kit comes with the following items:

A brush for applying glue, a seam roller for making the seams invisible, a paper hanging brush for smoothing the strips, a knife and cutting guide for trimming excess wallpaper, plus a spirit level, a pencil and a tape measure. It is only $26 but well worth every cent, it is a must-have to make the whole process easier.

Pergament Map – This stunning vintage world map is now on my girl’s bedroom wall. It has really changed the space for the better.

What did I order?

The map makes the room look so much more grown up now
We had to make sure that we could easily see Australia on the map

Dandelion Field – Blue – Wallpaper

This wallpaper was for my office. I measured just one part of the wall to add interest in the room. Before it had the Dandelion Field Blue wallpaper it was just painted white. One end of my office has a blue wall, the other end has a blackboard and the rest is painted white. I thought due to the blue in the room and it being my favourite colour the Dandelion Field Blue wallpaper was a good choice. I did look at some very bright and colourful wallpaper but decided on a muted tone for my office. It has really changed the room and space and added more warmth and texture to a previously white and bright area. As a creative person it has also given me a different backdrop for photos and creating more content.

Each roll is numbered so that you know what part to put on at what time… super easy and helpful
Adding more glue to the sides and making sure it is all sitting right.

This poster made me laugh. It is the monster from the book, “Where the Wild Things Are” and the monster is reading “Where the Wild Things Are” to the kids in the story. I loved this book as a kid and it still has a special place in my heart and when I saw this poster, I had to had have it. I made sure to get the poster and a black frame to allow me to hang it right away in my office.

  • Antique Seed Packets II – Poster

This poster is from an old company called the “Alexander Drug and Seed Co”, it is the cover of their Summer and Fall Catalogue 1899. I loved it due to the fact that I have a person called Alexander and that it is lovely vintage art. The company was from Augusta Georgia sold seeds by mail subscription.

This poster is from a company called the “Alexander Drug and Seed Co”, it is the company’s summer offer for 1898. It was for their Early Trucker Cabbage, Buncombe Cabbage and Mammoth Purple Globe Turnip”. I love the artwork and again as we have an Alexander I thought it was interesting. The company sells seeds by mail order and they are from Augusta Georgia.

What did I think of Photowall?

I was super impressed by the shopping experience on their website, the customer service and the quality of their products. Not to mention the quick delivery of all my goodies to my front door. I didn’t even have to leave the house, it got magically delivered to me and that is amazing as I am hours away from the capital city. If they can deliver to me they can deliver to anyone! I would recommend giving Photowall a go, I am sure you will love their products as much as I do. After you wallpaper one of your rooms you will catch the decorating bug and be planning what to do in other areas of your house.

Make sure if you have ordered prints with frames, the prints are not in the frame but sitting on top of them. If you rip the packaging open you might damage your print so be extra careful.

NOTE: This post is a collaboration with Photowall, they allowed me to pick my products and try them out to share with my readers. I loved it so much that I think you will be amazed at how easy it is to redo any room in your house.

A BIG thank you to Photowall for sending me the products to test out and to showcase on my website and also for the discount for my readers for December.

Make Salt Dough Ornaments

Salt Dough Ornaments are a perfect craft project to do with the kids.

They are fun and you can make whatever your heart desires. Your imagination can run wild.

My kids wanted to create different animals and I made them do handprints as well. You can do feet prints if you wish.

The kids will love to see their creations hanging from the tree, or on the doorknobs of cupboards and doors.

You can make these decorations for any celebration. Easter, Birthdays and more!

Ingredients

  • 4 cups of plain flour
  • 1 cup of salt
  • 1 and a half cups of water
  • Food dye (whatever colour you wish to create)
  • Paint if you wish to paint the ornaments rather than colour with food dye.
  • Glue
  • Glitter or Glitter Glue
  • Ribbon or string to thread through the ornament.
  • Chopstick or another item to make the hole to hang the decoration on the tree.
All my ingredients aside from the food dye to colour the dough.

Method

  • Mix all the ingredients together.
  • Add the food dye and mix some more to make sure that it is the right colour.
  • I separated the dough into three different batches. I made different colours for each child. This is a good way to ensure you know who’s decorations are whos.

  • Roll out the dough so it is not too thick and not too thin. (I made some of ours too thick and it has taken a while to dry)
  • Cut out the shapes with the cookie cutters and then press handprints or footprints on the decorations.
Adding the hole so you can hang your ornament. Make sure to do this before you bake the ornaments.
Adding the hole so you can hang your ornament. Make sure to do this before you bake the ornaments.
  • Make sure to add a hole to put the string or ribbon into the decoration.  Don’t forget to do this. Once dry it will be next to impossible to add the hole for the ribbon to tie onto the tree. We used the end of a chopstick.
  • Put the decorations on a tray with baking paper and then bake in the oven.
  • Bake in the oven for 1-2 hours at 100°C. or 200 °F. Time might vary depending on how thick the dough is for your decorations.
  • If the ornaments are still doughy you can put them back into the oven, or maybe leave them out to firm up before you decorate them.
  • Once the ornaments are dry you can decorate them.
The salt dough creature is ready to bake now. You can clearly see the hole that will allow you to put string/ribbon to allow you to hang up your decoration.

  • Add glue to the areas you wish to add glitter then sprinkle the glitter. Make your decoration sparkle! (I ended up buying glitter glue instead of just glitter. This saved me from adding the glue and then the glitter.)
  • Add ribbon or string to thread through the hole that you have added to the ornament to allow you to hang on the Christmas Tree or elsewhere.

What did I think of EveryPlate

I think you already know my thoughts on having meals delivered.

I love it. Anything that makes my life easier is something I embrace and want to continue to do.

Mexican Chicken & Corn Salad with Sweet Potato Wedges & Mayo

The ingredients were fresh and the recipe cards were easy to follow, with only 4 steps in most of them.

The ingredients from EveryPlate

Below are my favourite things about meal kits

  • You don’t have to think about what is for dinner – you just need to cook it
  • You don’t need to leave the house to collect the items for your meals – they are delivered to your door, thanks EveryPlate.
  • Even for the extras, you can still get home delivery from Woolworths.yes you never have to leave the house if you don’t want to.
  • Now, all we need to do is to think about how to pack a chef, cleaner, and housekeeper in an EveryPlate box and I will be winning on all fronts.

A few things we were not happy about:

  • Some of the recipes were missing a few ingredients but I substituted them, and the meals still tasted great. I did think that the kids might have used an ingredient for another meal, but they assured me they hadn’t. Maybe it was packing haste at EveryPlate HQ that meant we were missing a few things from our box.
  • I was given a free code to get an EveryPlate meal box to review. I waited until the box arrived to then cancel my subscription. I thought it was successfully cancelled but I was billed for another week. I was then told that I had to cancel on Tuesday, not Wednesday.
The Nutty Sweet Chilli Noodles with Veggies and Sesame Seeds

Although I paid for the experience, I did enjoy the meals. My extra box allowed me to make my very first risotto, I had always thought that this was a terribly complicated meal to create…in fact it was super easy to do.

Getting the salad ready

Another thing that I never really noticed before was how the two weeks of having the EveryPlate meal box made me more relaxed.

How you ask? I think it was not having to plan and think about all the meals for the weeks ahead, not having to shop and be in charge of it all.

It wasn’t my job to create the meals, it wasn’t my job to get all ingredients for the meals, and finally it was easy to just tell someone that there is a meal kit ready to go and to pick a recipe and cook something for the family – as it was family friendly the kids were able to help out more.

The Chorizo & Roast Veggies cooked a super simple and tasty meal.
Adding the salad the Chorizo & Roast Veggies – this was soooooooo yummy!

If you are thinking about simplifying your life and getting more time for yourself and the family then I would urge you to try an EveryPlate meal box, if you do you will win at dinner.

What were my favourite meals from EveryPlate

It is so easy to get stuck in your ways. You get tired, and don’t have the time or energy to do anything different or complicated so an easy meal you have made a million times is what is served.

My favourites were:

Sticky Lemon Chicken with Fries and Stir-fried Veggies – This meal was so tasty and the sauce was tangy with the lemon.

Chorizo & Roast Veggie Salad with Garlic Aioli – I really loved this meal. It was so yummy and morish, and oh so simple to make. I will make this again, as it was a HUGE hit with all the family.

Try EveryPlate to break your monotony of everyday meals…yes you can win at dinner with EveryPlate.

My readers can get up to $115 on your first four boxes, with dinner from as little as $2.39 per plate. To get this deal click here

Portland Twilight Markets – June Bonfire & Cracker Night

We visited Portland Night Markets in April and had a great time, there were plenty of stalls, craft fun for the kids, and also food trucks. The markets and silos are managed by the Foundations at Portland.

The stunning mural on the Portland Silos

While we were at the Portland Twilight Markets in April we did the following:

  • Looked at the stalls and bought things
  • Ate food from the food trucks
  • Looked around at the silos
  • Enjoyed a bit of music
  • My youngest had fun creating art at the kid’s corner

We are keen to enjoy the cracker and bonfire night at Portland Silos. It is freezing here already so we will need to rug up as it is really windy.

If you are going see the details below and maybe I will see you there.

Family Trip to Manly

We are lucky to live in a city where we can be at a beach or the mountains. A few weeks back (in fact it was Mother’s Day), the kids, hubby, and I decided to take the ferry to Manly. We thought it would be fun to explore and spend the day at the beach.

Even Bark the Dog had fun on the ferry

Waiting for the Manly ferry at Circular Quay.

It was a stunning time on the harbour, the weather was great and it was lovely to have no rain for a day.
I am sure that it rained the next day and didn’t stop. I must say that the constant rain has been hard to live with, so when it was finally good weather we leapt at the chance and embraced the time out.

Playing with sand is so much fun. We had fun making sandcastles on Manly Beach.
Alexander loved playing at Manly Beach

My little boy had never been on a ferry before, so hubby and I thought it would be extra fun for him and also fun for the older kids too.

Some things we did while we were on our adventure to Manly:

  • Obviously, catch a ferry to Manly and back to Circular Quay
  • Teach the older kids about the sides and areas of the boat, Port (left), Starboard ( right) Bow (front), and Stern (back).
  • Walked around and looked at the shops
  • Spent time at Manly Beach
  • Had fun with our six-year-old playing on the beach and running away from the waves
  • Have an ice cream at Manly Wharf
  • On the ferry ride there and back, notice the houses, and boats on the harbour and explain to the kids why the waves get choppier when we get close to the heads (heads that go directly out to sea).

See how a simple ferry trip can be a fun adventure and allow you to explore new areas of your own city. It is also a cheap day out with the kids.

Why not grab fish and chips while you are in Manly and bring your swimmers to enjoy the beach. Hopefully, it will still be warm enough for a swim.

Happy kids and especially my little boy who had fun being on a ferry for the first time.

Mother’s Day Debrief

I sit here looking at friends and families photos from Mother’s Day, these images are of happy families all looking like they have had a relaxing, fun and very happy day.

Mind you, these images are all posted on social media so maybe they are from 10 minutes of the day when everyone was smiling? Was it after the stunning stylish image that the kids continued their arguments? Did one have a tantrum to end all tantrums? Did the mother think “Why can’t my family just behave for a simple outing for lunch?”

Mums are always busy and Mother’s Day is the same.

After seeing all these carefully curated images, I then thought about my day.

There were a few fun and happy moments, but it was mostly exhausting due to kids arguing, one kid having several tantrums, kids not listening, no one doing anything they were told, when we finally got to lunch the youngest refused to sit on his chair and decided to be under the table and then decide to annoy his sisters and me. I just wondered why we bothered to go out at all during all this and that my thought of staying home seemed like a better idea.

Before we left the house all kids and hubby gave me wonderful and thoughtful presents in honour of Mother’s Day.

I don’t understand why everyone cannot behave for one day!

Personally, I would have preferred to stay home and do some things that I have not had time to do, being on my own would mean I can concentrate.

I did post some nice photos of the kids as they were having fun and I wanted to mark the day. However it would have been nice to have more moments that were photo worthy today.

I am a mother who is over all the drama, the crazy carry on of kids arguing and more! Would it still be Mother’s Day if I made the kids and hubby leave so I can have the day for me?

Have you ever had a Mother’s Day without the family? I know I would miss the kids, but the silence and calm might make me not miss them too much. Finally being able to do a few projects on my own would be so nice right now.

The kids did wish me a Happy Mother’s Day tonight before bedtime so that was rather sweet, and I gave them a cuddle and thanked them.

Maybe next year will be better.

Halloween Restrictions 2020

COVID has thrown a spanner in the works to everyone’s plans this year. We have all suffered lockdowns, not visited loved ones, missed family and friends, and had to cancelled much-awaited plans.

Now we are in October and with Halloween approaching, there are questions around what we can and cannot do if you are trick and treating this 31st of October.

The girls a fews ago dressed up for Halloween.

Check out what you can and cannot do here, it lists all states in Australia.

  • It is advised to keep your celebrations local, so don’t travel to different areas
  • You are not to have lollies in a communal bowl.
  • We have also been told to not have people knock on the front door, to have lolly bags on the front fence, and also have hand sanitiser available.
  • No backyard festivities and if you are decorating just do your front yard.
  • Family groups must stick together, practice social distancing, and should not mingle with others.

A NSW Health spokesperson told 7NEWS.com.au that under coronavirus restrictions groups of children trick-or-treating would not be allowed to travel together.

This is taken directly from the NSW Health Website:

COVID-safe tips if you plan to hand out treats

    • If you have any symptoms of COVID-19 over Halloween, stay home, don’t receive Halloween visitors and get tested immediately
    • If you are self-isolating, don’t answer the door to trick-or-treaters
    • Make it a front-yard event, not at the front door of your house. Keep your celebrations outdoors and get creative in decorating the front yard
    • Only hand out individually wrapped treats
    • Don’t use communal lolly bowls. Consider other ways of distributing treats such as hanging them individually on your fence, front gate or up your driveway
    • Offer hand sanitiser at your front gate or fence
    • You may wish to avoid people knocking on your door by putting up a sign that says “We are home but due to COVID-19, we are distancing. Please take one, Happy Halloween”
    • Remember, you can only have 20 people on your property at one time.

This year I have decided to not take the kids trick or treating, and sadly to not have any lollies for anyone. I feel like it is too hard with the current restrictions.

Although we won’t be having things for others, I will do some fun things with the kids in our back garden and of course, create some Jack O Lanterns so we can have fun as a family.

I will also be looking at games and fun activities the kids can do at home.

Make sure to check with your state to see what you can and cannot do.

Whatever you get up to this Halloween, stay safe and have fun.

PJ’s and Staying Home the New Normal

    Staying home is great.

Not having to get out of your PJ’s is even better, you can do this by putting a jacket over your best pyjamas and driving the kids to the kiss and drop so you don’t even have to get out of the car.

Restrictions are easing and things are slowly getting back to normal, but many are still working from home.

With over four months of lockdown and not being able to go anywhere, my motivation to go anywhere has been lost.

I’m happier to stay home, relax, and to work in comfort plus in the warmth of my house from the roaring heater.

Don’t get me wrong I’m drooling over a beach resort holiday so that we can all unwind and destress, maybe then mummy can finally.

I am also excited to be able to travel to places around Australia soon and eventually for international travel.

Maybe I’m a person that is really suited to lockdown? With all the services for contactless delivery, remote working, online classes, and concerts and loads more that has become available in the current COVID-19 crises. It is easier to stay home now more than ever.

Don’t get me wrong, when I’ve been out it has felt amazing, so nice to finally be doing things as we did before the global pandemic.

Are you like me and find that you would rather stay home lately?

OR MAYBE IT IS JUST STRESS AND ALL THE CHAOS FROM LOCKDOWN THAT HAS MADE ME SUPER TIRED AND IN NEED OF A REST?

It also could be the fact that I’ve gotten used to not being able to go places and therefore being home is the place to be.

Have you realised that you are preferring to stay at home? Or are you keen to race out to the big world and explore?

Interview with Pinky McKay – BigW Bub & Me Series

Having a baby is a life-changing event and one that requires preparation.  I read books, looked online and asked other mums about their experiences.

For me I was not just having one child first, I ended up having twins as my first children. I don’t know how many do this but I am sure that it is not that common.

BigW invited me to be a part of their Bub & Me Education Program in collaboration with select midwives across Australia.

This post is the first in my three-part series about being a new mum, breastfeeding, childbirth and great things you can get from BigW for your new little person/people.

    My interview with Pinky McKay

Below are my questions to Pinky and her answers, I hope that this interview is helpful for all new mums.

Pinky McKay is Australia’s most recognised breastfeeding expert
Pinky McKay is Australia’s most recognised breastfeeding expert

Q1. The expectation of what it is like to be a parent to the reality can be quite a shock for new mums. What do you tell new mums about suddenly being responsible for a little person?

A 1. A recent survey by Big W in conjunction with The Australian College of Midwives revealed one in three (32%) of Aussie mums struggle the most with self-doubt, which is really not surprising. Having a baby is rather like visiting a foreign country for the first time: no matter how well you prepare, no matter how many frozen casseroles there are in your freezer, how many products you buy or how many classes you attend, there will be shocks.

The relentlessness of caring for a newborn is something we can’t really imagine until it happens to us. I wish every pregnant woman could spend a day (and night) with a new mum and support her – hold her baby while she showers, while she naps, and see that crying isn’t just for newborns, mums cry too (I warn partners about this too). The biggest surprise can be the weird brain things that happen such as ‘hearing’ your baby crying when you are having a shower, then racing to check and finding him peacefully sleeping, right where you left him, neatly swaddled in his safety-approved cot.

Q2. How do you help new mums with sleep deprivation and learning about their new baby?

Pinky:  Before birth, I suggest how important it is to set up your support network. If I am seeing a desperate new mum, I always ask about what level of support she has and discuss ways to get support if she doesn’t have enough help. We are so conditioned that reaching out and asking for practical help is ‘weak’. It absolutely takes a village, whether this is hired help, friends and family or government-funded ‘in-home care’ (I have facilitated this for families with high needs).

The biggest thing is about lowering expectations both of yourself and your child and filtering out the ‘noise’ about what you ‘should’ be doing –according to a recent survey by Big W, 67% of mums say social media puts pressure on mums to live an ‘insta-worthy’ life.

While good basic care such as eating healthy meals and resting are especially important in the early weeks as women are healing from growing and birthing a baby, guarding your emotional energy needs to be a priority. Often, the pressure and anxiety around baby sleep, for instance, can take more energy than the lack of sleep. I tell mums, YOU are the expert about YOUR well baby. You can trust yourself and your baby and the amazing connection between you and your child. If you feel confused by advice, you can filter it by checking, ‘is it safe? Is it respectful? And, does it feel right? And if you have concerns, check in with your health carers, not ‘randoms’ on social media.

Q3. I thought I knew what I was doing with my third child, but he was so different and nothing I did worked. I was doing all the things that worked with the twins but finally had a realisation that he is a different person and I needed to listen to his cues and focus on what he likes and doesn’t like. How do you help parents do this from the start if they have more than one child?

Pinky: As a mum of five, I was always amazed at how unique each child was, from their temperament to their development. Although babies all have similar needs for security and love, it’s helpful to discuss how they vary in the ways they express those needs. They are unique, individual little beings and although we can support their personalities, we can’t ‘mould’ our child or reflect in the glory of having an ‘easy’ baby. It’s best to observe and get to know each new baby’s cues and respond to that baby in a way that’s right for them. If we do have a more sensitive baby, the good news is that we really can’t short-change them or they will let us know, and by responding promptly, they will feel secure and usually become happy, calm little people as they grow.

Q4. My third child was super fussy, had reflux and found it hard to remove burps and any gas from his body. Not only did he cry all the time, not settle well and want to be held all the time I was walking around like a zombie due to the lack of sleep. Do you have any recommendations on how to settle a fussy baby or one that has other issues that are making things more difficult for him/her to sleep and to eat?

Pinky: Rather than simply heading to ways to ‘settle’ although of course, keeping your baby as comfortable as possible is important for baby and you, it’s worth trying to work out why this is happening. For instance, could there be allergies or food intolerance contributing to reflux symptoms (your baby is never allergic to your breast-milk but may react to foods passing through your milk)? Tongue-tie can also mean babies are swallowing air because their latch and sucking is often ineffective, and a fast breast milk flow can also create issues for young babies swallowing air as they feed – reclining as you feed or ‘paced bottle feeding’ can slow the flow and make it easier for baby to manage.

It is really hard work when you have a super unsettled baby, especially if you have other children, but wearing your baby in a carrier or wrap can help settle your baby and you can still do activities with two free hands. There are also ‘holds’ that can help relieve gas pains such as lying baby across your arm on his tummy, with his head facing your elbow and supporting him with a hand between his legs as you walk/sway. Baby massage can be a great way to support your baby’s nervous system and move the gas – clockwise circles on baby’s tummy, alternated with knee bends.

Q5. I expressed my breastmilk for all three kids and due to the twins being premmies this was needed. However, I thought having a singleton that was born exactly at 40 weeks that he would be better at breastfeeding. It turned out that my third child couldn’t latch on and would only eat a bit and then wanted more. I would feed more and then he would wriggle and scream at me all the time. So, I decided, since it was frustrating him and me and causing me stress to express breastmilk again was the way to go. Are there ways to increase your breastmilk supply when you are stressed, running on no sleep and caring for two other kids and husband.

Pinky: Wow! That sounds like a nightmare. Firstly, it’s important that regardless of your sleep (or lack of it), that you eat regularly – handy one-handed snacks such as Boobie Bikkies, avocado or cheese on crackers, a can of tuna or salmon and boiled eggs (cook several and keep them in the fridge) are an easy boost – and drink according to your thirst.  Your partner’s /husband’s support is vital – he is a grown-up so needs to take up some of the slack, not expect to be ‘looked after’.  Please don’t be shy about setting up a help roster with friends, whether that is doing a school pickup, taking your other kids out so you can rest and focus on feeding or bringing food. Most people are delighted to share the experience of a new baby.

Try to set up young children with activities and snacks (Netflix and chill, even if it’s a kids’ show or sit on the big bed and read stories or sit outside and get the toddlers to ‘paint the fence’ with water), so you can spend time giving baby skin to skin snuggles to boost your milk-making chemistry and allow baby to feed frequently.

Remember, an empty breast makes milk more quickly so as you breastfeed or pump, you can try massage and breast compressions (high up on your breasts, not down near the nipples) to help empty your breasts more effectively. You will notice your baby start swallowing more quickly and if pumping you will see the milk start flowing a few seconds after compressions. If you are exclusively pumping or baby isn’t a strong feeder you can try power pumping (as well as putting baby to the breast if he will latch): To power pump: Pump for 20 minutes; Rest for 10 minutes; Pump for 10 minutes; Rest for 10 minutes; Pump for 10 minutes. Charlie and The Chocolate Factory – The Musical

I want to give the twins more experiences, and live theatre is one experience that I am keen sharing with the kids more.

Last Christmas I got the girls and I tickets to Charlie and The Chocolate Factory – The Musical

The actual date we attended was in March and I was happy that the kids were still excited, even though I gave it to them in December of the previous year.

To make the whole event more fun we made a weekend of it in the city. I booked a hotel right next to the Capitol Theatre in Sydney, it was so close that we just had to walk next door to fall into our beds after the show.

The day of the show the kids and I trained it in and managed to check in earlier than expected. This allowed us to leave our bags in the room and to then explore Sydney for the day.

Our show was at 7.30pm at night so I had a whole day to fill with the twins.  So what did we get up to?

    • We looked at shops in the QVB
    • We walked around Paddies Markets

    • Had Yum Cha in Chinatown
    • We all got manicures
    • Went to Myer and David Jones to check out what is there
    • Looked at the toys at Myer
    • Walked back to the hotel to rest and then change for the show

What did we think of the show?

The girls were super excited and so was I. We all had never been to the Capitol Theatre before, I must say that the detail of the theatre is amazing. So much detail, statues and more! A very old world theatre experience.

We were super early for the show and decided to get drinks and pre-dinner snacks. Once we dined on our treats and ate some food it was finally ready to enter the theatre.  I had organised seats that were so close to the stage…the kids were amazed at how close we were.

We sat down and looked at the fabulous theatre while waiting for the show to start.

We were only 3 rows away from the stage.... how fantastic!
We were only 3 rows away from the stage…. how fantastic!

The backdrop of the set was the Willy Wonka Factory, and left of the stage was the Bucket house and the right of the stage was the candy shop that Charlie Bucket frequented drooling over chocolate bars that he couldn’t afford.

The way they moved between the Bucket house and the candy shop was very clever. Once Charlie was in the candy shop, the shop owner was enticing him to buy…but Charlie couldn’t. Also, Charlie had no idea that the Candy Man was indeed Willy Wonka himself.

Willy Wonka was very boom tish and so were some of the other characters, some lines were hilariously funny.

Two very excited kids waiting to see the show! I must say I was excited too!

Once they moved to Willy Wonka’s factory the background changed digitally to create the vibrantly colourful world of the Wonka Factory. Seeing Roald Dahl’s story come to life on stage was so magical.

The cast did an awesome job and they had such personality and presence.

Violet and Mr Beauregard had such great interaction between each other, every time they smiled and winked I couldn’t help but laugh. Also when Violet Beauregard became a huge purple grape and then finally popped it was so well done.

Augustus and Mrs Gloop were amazing as well, so funny and naughty. You actually forgot that these people were actors and not the actual characters from the film.

The glass elevator was magical too…yes more magic. It looked like it was actually moving. The background was stunning and created such a great effect.

The whole show looked stunning and was so enjoyable for kids and adults.

We loved the show and if you want to go, please do, you will LOVE IT!

The Sydney Show is on until July 21st – buy tickets for Sydney

Melbourne tickets are from August 2019

Brisbane tickets are from March 2020

The Charlie and The Chocolate Factory Musical Website has fantastic education resources

There are so many fun activities that will help kids learn and know more about Charlie and The Chocolate Factory. There is English activities, Visual Arts, Dance, Drama, Media Arts, and Music. Not only can teachers freely download the packs to help with their class but parents can do so too. I downloaded mine to help my kids before we saw the show.

You can also re-read the book again or get it as an audio book to help inspire the work or refamiliarise yourself with the story again. Below is a quote from the Education Pack Writers, Elia Erez and David Perry about the worksheets and activities.

“Charlie and the Chocolate Factory offers an excellent opportunity to explore the Australian Curriculum, with specific references to English, and The Arts (Dance, Drama, Media Arts, Music
and Visual Arts) as well as all seven of the General Capabilities (Literacy, Numeracy, Intercultural Understanding, Information & Communication Technology, Critical & Creative Thinking, Personal & Social Capability AND Ethical Understanding). These relationships to the production are examined in the document CONNECTIONS TO THE AUSTRALIAN CURRICULUM. We trust that the activities and resources in this Education Pack will provide teachers with the ability to fully appreciate the educational opportunities of this
spectacular musical production. Using Charlie and the Chocolate Factory as a focus, this Education Pack contains engaging activities that can be used by teachers, or even keen fans of Roald Dahl who want to gain a richer understanding of the production.” Eli Erez and David Perry Education Pack Writers, for Charlie and The Chocolate Factory the Musical.

    Where did we stay?

The kids and I stayed at Capitol Square Hotel Sydney, which was basically next door to the Capitol Theatre.

I booked the family room which had 1 queen sized bed and a single bed. Just perfect for 2 kids and 1 adult.

The hotel was not flash but was just what we needed. Beds and close by to the theatre.

Have you seen Charlie and The Chocolate Factory? If so what were your thoughts?

I’m aiming to have more theatre experiences this year rather than buying things.

    Preventative Strikes are Best

What do you do on your birthday? I suppose the natural thing to do is to celebrate with lunch, dinner or a few drinks.

My birthday was last Monday and I did none of the above. Why do you ask? Well, I organised to get a health check that required me to starve myself and take a horrible concoction to clean my bowel out. Rather yucky to say the least.

I could have moved my appointment to a different day but then I would be waiting longer and worrying about getting it done. I just wanted it all done and over. To not think about it. To have an answer to my concerns.

So what test did I have done?  Well, it was a colonoscopy. This is when they put a scope up your bum to look at your bowel to ensure that you don’t have cancer.

When I went to book in at the hospital the lady suddenly went to the month of May. I instantly thought, of course, it has to be around my birthday. I foolishly got the paperwork earlier and was umming and erring if I should do it. Once I decided to get it done I couldn’t find the paperwork, so of course had to get it re-sent. This meant that it ended up being in May and coinciding with my birthday. Not good at all!

Why did I get this horrible thing done to me? Firstly two of my best friends died due to cancer and it started with bowel cancer. For the last three years and while pregnant I noticed some odd things, however, they couldn’t do some tests due to being pregnant.

For example, having 3 months of constant diarrhoea when pregnant was not good. After having my third child I’ve had some odd things occur, not going to the toilet easily, having issues going or still having diarrhoea. I went through a lot of things that it could possibly be.

Am I sick? Am I stressed? (possibly), Is it something I’m eating? Is it IBS? Or something else? Could it be a blockage? Would this be the beginning signs of cancer or something else? Is it polyps? I had no idea!  It was driving me crazy.

I did the blood tests, and the poo tests and all came back fine and not abnormal. However, I still had some odd symptoms that were worrying.

I’m a mum to three young children and if god forbid I did have something wrong I hope it was found early. Early detection means that you can get it zapped, cut out and you have the best chance of beating it.

So my birthday as I said was not fun it was rather horrible not eating. Then when the clock hit 5pm I had to take a disgusting and horrible solution called, Glycoprep. Just in case you have no idea what this tastes like, it is super salty and you have to drink 3 litres of this liquid! YEP 3 litres and it made me feel SICK!!!!!!

I was supposed to be finished this fluid by 7pm, but I ended up finishing up at 9.30pm, yep not great but I did drink the whole 3 litres.

If you ever have to drink this horrible salty solution you will find that it is so hard to drink it quickly. Well, it was for me. The more I drank the harder it got.

Fast forward 2-3 hours and I had to urgently go to the bathroom. The idea of the solution is to clean you out, and when I say to clean you out, everything is exiting your body extremely quickly!!!!  Not fun and pleasant at all.

Basically, I should have just taken up residence in the bathroom.

With the frequent visits to the bathroom (the bathroom is not heated), not eating, drinking all the fluid I still had to get through I was super cold. In fact, freezing! I ended up with a beanie, scarf, jumper and blanket over me when not in the bathroom.

I ended up finally going to bed around 11pm and had to put on about 100 blankets and the heater on to keep warm. It took me ages to get warm.

Finally, it was the next morning and I could only have water until 8am after 8 I was not allowed anything… yes nothing. I was so tired, hungry and over it all.

    Waiting at the hospital
    Waiting at the hospital

My appointment at the hospital was at 10am, this was not when I went in for the procedure.  I went in and got a checkup (blood pressure, questions and answered some questions. Finally got into a stylish gown and paper shoes.

I was then told to wait in a waiting room (there was no clock in this room but it felt like I was there for hours) with a warm blanket and a tv. I was then joined by 3 other ladies. I was the youngest person in the waiting room. One lady asked me why I was getting it done, I told her due to some strange symptoms and my close mates dying, it was my preventive strike to ensure I was okay.

Maybe I didn’t need to do it. I know I didn’t get a test to say that it was needed but after other weird things that I experienced the doctor thought it might be a good idea too.

I also had no idea if my dear friends had any symptoms that they thought were odd.  If they did have something did they think it was due to something else? If they did have symptoms if they got them checked out, would they still be here?  This is a question I cannot answer or ever know the answer to. They are not here anymore.

I miss my wonderful friends so much. I wish they had done a preventive strike and found it before it was too late.

Finally, it was my turn to go and meet the doctor, all the nurses and of course the anaesthetist. I was worried and nervous. I did have to make sure they knew who I was due to the doctor thinking I was another patient. (Scary) Apparently, the surgery list was mixed up. So glad that I was vocal and told them who I was.

The cannula was super painful and has left a HUGE bruise, I was awake one minute and then waking up in recovery next. The doctor came to see me after I was given sandwiches and 2 cups of orange juice. You have no idea how good it was to eat and drink again.

My huge bruise on my hand from the cannula
My huge bruise on my hand from the cannula

The news from the doctor was that there are no signs of cancer and all looked good and normal. Great news. Maybe my issues could be IBS or that I need to have less milk or a food allergy?  I have no idea… I am just very happy to know that it is not cancer.

I’m writing this post to urge you to be aware of any changes in your body, any changes to your health. Get checked, stay on top of your yearly checkups, skin checks, blood tests and more.

I know my 46th birthday was not ideal, but I look at it this way. This test is helping me have more birthdays.

Due to the fact that I couldn’t eat or drink on my official birthday, we are having a do-over on the weekend. I’m really looking forward to going out with the family to celebrate. Plus eating some yummy food is a bonus after not eating on my special day.

I hope sharing this experience helps you get tested and see that it is not something that just affects older people, many people that get diagnosed with bowel cancer are young.
