Icy Shower

Today it has been freezing! Yesterday there was warmth in the air and a hint of what is to come. Summer and holidays! However today it seems like we have hit another cold snap. Black dark clouds hovered over us after I picked up the girls from school. We had to get Weet-Bix from the store or else there would be issues in the morning and when we exited the skies errupted with hail. Little balls of ice, and it bucketed down. It did not last for long.

Did you get a big down pour of rain? Was it hail? I have heard some people got snow. Yes snow! I suppose that is no surprise. Two years ago in October we got the biggest dump of snow in ten years here. So anything is possible. Snow in Spring. Hail in spring. Maybe it might happen in summer? Only time will tell.

The only thing that made it all worth it was that the store had Weet-Bix. Imagine making your way in a hail storm to find they had none.

It has been snowing. See the article from the Sydney Morning Herald.

Bring On The Sunshine!

Rain be gone! Bring us sunshine and blue skies. Image courtesy of worradmu at FreeDigitalPhotos.net

31st of August: Woke up to Blue skies and sunshine. Maybe the post helped???

Today was forecast to be sunny. Well it said it was supposed to be after lunch time. Do you think this happened? NO it did not. It is cold, overcast, cloudy and yes still raining. It has been raining for the last week or so. Nonstop rain! We did need some rain but I am now over it and the weather can now turn sunny and warm.

Not only will the sunshine and nice weather help with doing laundry and airing out the house. It will also allow me to be outdoors to have a walk and experience the nice weather (when it does happen) and hopefully take the kids to the park. Being cooped up inside is very annoying for kids and also adults. Some vitamin D will be nice to get once the sun allows it.

My other frustration with the weather is that the twin’s birthday is in two weeks’ time and we are having it at the park. If it is raining a party at the park will not do. Might have to look at a wet weather alternative. Monday is the start of spring and I am  hoping that this will trigger some nice spring type weather. Well I can hope can’t I?

I did manage to take the kids to the park yesterday after school. The sun was out very briefly and I thought if I did not pounce on this opportunity I would regret it. I was right. Kids had a great time at the park and we ended up crashing one of their friend’s birthday parties, although they did not mind I felt terrible as we were just off to the park and had no idea that they were having a party there. As we had a fabulous time at the party the girls have picked out a nice present for their friend and will wrap it and give it to her for Monday.

On the day of the party we have a 75% chance of rain… this is a concern! I will call around and see what I can organise for a plan b. However invites have been sent out so changing the venue might be an issue. There is still time if this needs to happen.

Have you planned a party in a park or somewhere outdoors, to then have it rain for weeks beforehand? Did you get worried and organise a plan b that is undercover? Let me know what you organised? Did the weather behave itself and you were lucky in the end?

Slow Start Monday

Happy Monday to you all. Yes another week is upon us. I am still fighting a cold and feel very tired. It does not help that it is a perfect day for staying in bed. If I had no kids or no reason to leave the house I might have just stayed in bed and still be there. However I had to get kids off to school, pick up a parcel from the post office and more.

Super tired this Monday. Image found on Pinterest.

Due to being under the weather there is a lot of housework to do…now I must go and sort some laundry or people might not be happy as they will not have undies and socks and that will of course not make other family members have a smile or like me much at all.

I have had my coffee late and have caught up on who won the room reveal for the block last night. Now I can look at the news. I hate finding out who won and I have not yet watched the show.

Clothes sorting is about to happen….. what job are you dreading or not wanting to do today?  Are there several. I do have a few but the clothes one is the major one at the moment.

Have a great Monday and hope you get some things done or have a rest if that is what is on the agenda.

Suzanne.

Kids Being Kids

Today we had a big or some would say a massive thunderstorm. Thunder made the ground tremble and at times felt like it was shaking the house. It sounded so close and a bit of a worry. I was glad that no trees or branches fell.  I took a video to show hubby but as you can imagine the little people in the background did their own thing. One did a big burp while I was filming and the other was talking about the next puzzle to do. Busy with heaps of things to do inside today. See the rain come down and laugh when you hear the children in the background. You cannot plan for this!

Doing puzzles as it was a very rainy day. Great indoor fun!

We Have Rain!

Note: The rain did not last or was there much of it.

It is now raining in the Blue Mountains. Not sure how many are getting the rain and hope it buckets down soon so it helps put all the fires out.  I feel very lucky that the weather has allowed us some rain. I am also bracing for the weather tomorrow as they have forecast a bad day. I am off to a community meeting this afternoon to find out more about the fire situation. Hope to be more informed soon.

I Blame the Pig!

Wet day and looks like it will be a wet week!
Wet day and looks like it will be a wet week!

The last couple of days we have had torrential rain, and it has not stopped coming down. It seems like we are set for a very wet couple of days or at the most a week or even worse the whole school holidays. Let’s hope it stops and we do get a break and can venture outside to have some fun without being soaked and a muddy mess.

Today was the last day of pre-school for the girls for term 2 and as you can imagine the rain and puddles is a draw card for kids, they just love being messy and wet! Oh the joys at trying to get wet messy kids into a car while it is pouring with rain. Not nice for mummy trying to put on their seat belts. As you can imagine, I ended up very wet, and cold.

The kids love Peppa Pig and Peppa for those that don’t know loves jumping in muddy puddles and the girls want to do just the same. Yesterday, after dance play at the local school Julia’s shoes and socks were soaked so today I made them wear their gum boots for going to and fro and had slip ons for inside the school. I did not want what happened yesterday to happen today. I was over the complaining of mummy my feet are wet, mummy I hate wet clothes, mummy my feet are cold. Oh, you chose to wear those shoes even when I told you not to! Maybe this is a life lesson, listen to mummy! I can only live in hope.

So since the kids had their gum boots on and were dressed to jump in muddy puddles they did, and got wet, muddy and soaked their pants very well indeed. I let them have their fun in the wet and mud as I do stop it a bit but thought why not. We are not far from the school and as soon as we are home I will get them changed into warm dry clothes. As you can imagine they had a blast.

Do you cringe now when you see muddy puddles? Is it all Peppa Pig’s fault? Send in your comments.

Want to be somewhere warm

It is freezing here. We are facing about 3 days of severe wind with possible wind speed to get to 115km or more per hour. Last night I just laid awake and listened to the scary wind and hoped that the house did not end up like the one in the wizard of oz.  I am from Queensland and miss the beach and the warm weather. Why is it that we have to have a freezing cold winter, why can’t it be unusually warm? I know I live in the Blue Mountains and it is cold so what do I expect. A girl can dream of warm days at the beach, the current day dream is for the whole family to hope on a plane and go to Fiji or Queensland to a resort and to be pampered and be warm at least.

It has been windy all day and raining all day, from a drizzle to heavy rain. Just being out for a couple of minutes I feel the cold wind go straight through me… maybe I need to invest in warmer jackets and pants?

This afternoon when I picked the girls up from school it was raining, just getting a bit wet, I could not feel my hands. Not feeling hands did not help putting kids seat-belts on.

Current temperature is:

  • 4.5°C
  • Recorded min: 2°C
  • Recorded max: 3°C
  • Feels like: 0.6°C
  • Humidity: 98%
  • Rainfall since 9am: 11.2mm
  • Wind: S 18km/h
  • Wind gusts: 32km/h

However for most of the day it was about 2 or 3 degrees but felt like minus 4 degrees.

I hope you are all keeping safe, warm and that you are o.k from the strong winds.

If you have any recommendations for warm gloves send them in. My hands get so cold that I cannot feel them, not good as I fear that it will get worse. It is only day 5 in winter and it is so cold.

Wet weather options

It was a big day for us girls on Wednesday. Off to an indoor play centre and then in the evening to a board meeting, at the girls past child care centre. The decision to go to an indoor play centre was made easy by torrential rain that would not ease, and of course kids that wanted to run wild. However mummy just wanted to go back to bed. This relaxing in bed was never going to happen, so why not take them somewhere to exhaust the little monkeys.

Before we even got out the door, the girls had already done many pages of collage; drawing and I had painted their faces with face paint, a gift from grandma. I must say that face painters are safe as my skills are terrible in this area, but the girls were happy with the results, so glad that they did not know any better.

Isn’t it always the way, when you want to leave the house, or get out of the car, it rains heavier than before and seems to get worse and worse. We stayed in the car for a bit to see if it would get better, but no luck. Then I realised we could not stay in the car for a long, due to the girls eventually saying, “I need to go to the toilet mummy.” With this thought, I decided we just needed to run for it.  All three of us made it, although soaked and now a bit colder than we were before.

The girls were very pleased to be at the play area, and I packed a lunch so it makes it easy (and cheaper). While we are there, they can eat and then have a rest when we get home. Julia and Lillian spotted a friend from pre-school and all of them were excited. Great, they have a friend to play with. So from then on they were running and playing with their girlfriend. This means mummy can just have a cuppa tea without having to entertain kids; yippee!

The only problem arises at this place is when you have to leave. When you announce to your child/children that you have to go/to pack up/put shoes on, they run away and cannot be found. You end up giving extra time, and then eventually resorting to evil mummy tactics. Grabbing one child and then getting them organised and holding them until you get the other, if it fails. I let them know that if they behave badly, we will never come back. This usually results in, “Oh, oaky mummy” and “oaky” and mean looks at me.

Upon exiting the indoor play area, the rain was still as heavy as when we came in. If anything it seems like it had gotten heavier and worse. A kind lady on the counter minded the girls, while I went to get the car. This helped as it would have been difficult with two kids in the rain.

We went home to rest before our next outing, which was to the girls ex child care centre. They used to go there for two years, but now they go to pre-school. I am still on the board at the centre and went for the regular meeting. The girls get minded by some ladies who work at the centre, and the kids love it, as they get to see their old teachers/carers/friends that go to the centre. They get fed so all I have to do is give them some milk and it is off to bed. Upon leaving it was still pouring with rain, we finally made it home tired and wet.

What do you do when it is pouring with rain, and it does not stop? Do your kids run amok, or do they like being inside doing puzzles, drawing or other tasks? Mine love to go outside and seem to feel couped up if the rain lasts for too long. Not a good thing in a small house with bad weather. Send in your comments.

A walk in sunshine and rain

Woke up to nice sunny, hot weather, about time I hear you say. It feels like the rain has set in and will never leave.  Very worried about autumn and of course winter. Living in Katoomba in the Blue Mountains, it gets very cold. If it continues this wet weather we will be in for a cold and wet winter. This is not something I enjoy. I love summer, but not when it is wet and gloomy. So as it was sunny and warm, I made the most of it.  I organised the girls to get in the pram, packed us up and I walked into town, well Katoomba that is.

As I have been meaning to do some exercise, it was nice that the weather was so nice.   So all 3 of us were out and about for a walk, well mummy was walking and huffing and puffing some of the way. It is hard to push the pram with it all stocked with 2 little people on board now. I suppose this helps with the exercise, so I shouldn’t complain.  We finally got to the shops, I dropped of daddies shirts at the cleaners, then we went off to check the post office for a parcel we are expecting went to the bakery and purchased cheese and bacon rolls for the girls, then off to Coles to get some shopping.

On the way back the pram was packed up well with all the shopping plus the girls. It was getting black and dark. There was a big black cloud getting darker and darker. We heard loud thunder and I thought I had to speed up to get us home. I had a bit of walking to do. The whole idea now of taking the pram seemed like a stupid idea. How will I ever get back in time.

I managed to get down Station Street and if you know that street it is all downhill. I jogged with the pram all the way down that street. I was trying to make up some time to get us home quickly. However that did not help a great deal, just around the corner from the house it started to rain, thunder and lightning seemed to be getting worse and felt very close. I was trying to keep up with the jogging but could not, ended up fast walking. This was met with sadness from the girls as they liked me going fast and really enjoyed the speed. Pity it was not something I could keep doing. Maybe after more sessions jogging or fast walking I could do that, only if the weather would permit.

We managed to get home, wet and I was so exhausted. I got the girls out of the pram, put the pram under cover, and opened the house. Made sure all windows were closed and then raced outside to get the clothes off the line.

Have you ever been caught by the weather? Has it made it difficult if you had kids with you? What did you do? I did think of getting a taxi or bus, however you would have to wait for that and the likelihood is that the rain would have been worse by this stage. After we were all indoors it bucketed down. I also learnt that there were weather warnings for hail and severe thunderstorms in the area. We were very lucky to get home when we did. If I had known that would have happened, I would have taken the car.  Although every time I do and it ends up a nice sunny day, I kick myself for not going out and exercising and enjoying the weather while we can.

More sunny adventures

Yes another sunny wonderful day today, I am very proud of myself that I managed to do 2 loads of laundry before we left the house and nearly all was dry when we got home.

As it was sunny, we thought that we would take off to Australia Walkabout Park, we had a Cudo voucher that was going to expire. I bought it thinking that it would be great for the girls to see all different animals in their habitat. I am so glad that the weather was good and we were able to use the voucher before it expired. We raced around, got ready and packed our bag.

Julia was out of sorts all day, and we think it was due to the heat, she was moody, wanting cuddles and everything was an issue. Lillian seemed fine.  My car has no air conditioning and we think it needs to be re gassed, it has to wait currently so we aired the car with the windows down. Not great, but it works, the only annoying part is when you have to stop it gets very hot.

We finally arrived to the wildlife park at about 1pm and all had some lunch. The girls saw an emu or two walking around the eating area, and they were amazed at them. Behind the cafe is the koala enclosure and the girls could not see them moving, as they were fast asleep. After lunch we all went to the talk about the diamond python, who is called Neil, (Neil Diamond, someone at this park has a sense of humour). The girls were not interested in touching the snake, petting it, or have it pretend you were a tree and lounge on you. I was not into it and was happy to look also. There were some brave kids and adults that allowed their body to be a tree for Neil the snake. I just could not do it. This idea got met with “NO, YUCK!” by both the girls. So I take it they feel the way I do and so does daddy about this. Happy to watch.

After this we all went off for a bit of a bush walk and ended up at the Tasmanian Devil talk. These creatures definitely should not be messed with, they have heaps of teeth that seriously could do you some damage. Since the weather was very hot, they were not that keen in coming out from their cool log. There was a brief moment when one came out with the coaxing from the ranger with meat and holding the devil in a position that was not cruel but would not allow the animal to eat the ranger either.

We saw koalas being fed, emus, the girls saw kangaroo’s eating and they patted them and were very taken with them. We made sure that they were safe and was around just in case. All in all it was a good day; it was long and a tiring day, the girls saw and animals and had a great experience. So glad it was hot, a taste of what summer should have been. I wonder if we will get more weather like this.

I have only now checked the weather for the week ahead. What a sad state of affairs, the follow is the predication for the week ahead (weather taken from Sydney Morning Herald Weather):

How disappointing that the weekend is probably the only sunny warm weather that we might have in a while. Let’s hope that the weather people have got it wrong.

When we came home from the wildlife park, I changed the sheets on our bed and the girls beds. Now the only washing I have to do is the sheets and some clothes from today. So that is good news. Aside from sorting, ironing and putting away.

There are 3 more days until the girls go to pre-school orientation; I am so excited that you would think it is me going to school. I hope it is a fun time at the school, not sure what will be discussed and shown for future students, but keen to find out. Now need to get my finger out and start the sewing project for their pants.

I hope you all had good adventures this weekend and that the weather was good. I hope that the weather is going to be sunny and warm tomorrow, I will hope for it. What did you all get up to this weekend? We managed to find some A3 paper from Officeworks this weekend for the kid’s art, so maybe tomorrow we will paint or draw. What have you got organised?
