  • 2 punnets of blueberries to decorate the tart
  • 225 grams of Philadelphia Original Cream Cheese
  • 75 grams of caster sugar
  • 2 teaspoons of vanilla extract
  • 300ml of thickened cream

  • 6 sheets of natural gelatine leaves
Yummy and fresh blackberries from Todarello’s in Katoomba

I’ve been diving deep into the world of online recipes and let me tell you, it’s a riot of colours out there! From jaw-dropping cakes to slices that are more vibrant than a Taylor Swift song, and even pasta sporting hues that would make a rainbow jealous, cooks are truly artists in their own right. Recently, I stumbled upon this Oreo Cookie-based tart, and oh boy, that dark crust was the superstar alongside the dazzling colours of raspberry and blueberry—totally spoke to my taste buds!

Now, here’s the kicker—it’s a no-bake wonder! Yup, just pop it in the fridge and freezer, and voila! I’m all about saving time in the kitchen, so this dessert is right up my alley.

For my twist, I’m thinking of infusing the mousse with blackberries. Yep, blackberries! This recipe has got me all excited about trying something totally new in my culinary playbook.

And speaking of summer, it’s the season when blackberries and blueberries shine bright like my love for a catchy summer tune (Swiftie alert!). As someone who lives and breathes summer berries (hello, favourite season!), knowing they’re in season makes me gleeful. It’s like a shortcut to creating a tart bursting with the freshest summer berries—a total win-win situation!

Did you know?

Blackberries are the tiny, mighty warriors of goodness! These delightful berries bring a whole parade of perks to the party. Here’s a sneak peek into the fantastic world of benefits that these little black gems bring along:

  • High in vitamin C
  • High in fibre
  • Can help reduce cholesterol
  • Manage blood sugar levels by slowing the rate of sugar absorption
  • A good source of vitamin K
  • High in manganese
  • May improve brain health
  • Also supports oral health

As you can see not only do blackberries and blueberries look pretty, they are delicious
and very good for you.

Blueberries are like the rockstars of superfoods! These little powerhouses are bursting with goodness, and their list of amazing deeds is simply off the charts. Check out below all the fantastic things these tiny but mighty blue dynamos can do:

  • High in antioxidants
  • Protect against DNA damage, which may help protect against aging and cancer
  • Blueberries help prevent oxidative damage to “bad” LDL cholesterol
  • Help prevent heart disease
  • Help your brain and memory
  • Blueberries have been shown to have anti-diabetes effects
  • Help with inflammation after exercise

Do you need more of a reason to have a
second helping of the No-Bake Oreo
Blackberry Mousse Tart?

For my fresh produce, I like to shop locally at Todarello’s Katoomba Village Fruit Market.

I can’t get enough of Todarello’s! Their produce selection is seriously impressive—I mean, it’s like a treasure trove every time I walk in. But you know what really seals the deal? The people there are just amazing. They’re like your own personal shopping squad, always there to lend a hand and make your grocery trip a breeze. No question is too much trouble, and they’re more than happy to help carry your bags to the car. They’re the real MVPs (Most Valuable Player) of the grocery store, making the whole experience a whole lot easier!

Stepping into Todarello’s Katoomba is like entering a vibrant wonderland for your senses! The explosion of colours from fresh fruits and vegetables is an absolute feast for the eyes. Every corner boasts a stunning array of produce, each piece seemingly competing to be the most tempting. And you know what? It’s not just about the looks—every single item on display here is top-notch. It’s a guarantee that when you pick something up, you’re getting the absolute best, freshest ingredients available. It’s like having a palette of nature’s finest at your fingertips.

During my visit to Todarello’s Katoomba Village Fruit Market, I purchased three punnets of luscious blackberries and two punnets of tantalizing blueberries—all set and primed for my upcoming no-bake tart adventure!

This tart might seem like a tough nut to crack, but let me tell you, it’s a breeze! Creating this masterpiece is an absolute cinch—effortless and oh-so-fun!

How do you make this gorgeous dessert?

We respect your privacy. Unsubscribe at any time.

    METHOD

Step 1: Create the Oreo base. You will need a blender to turn the Oreo Cookies into powder. Unwrap all three packets to give you 33 cookies and add them to the blender. Once all the cookies have been cut up and resemble dirt, add the melted butter to the Oreo mixture. This will form a dough to create the crust for the tart.

Step 2: Add the Oreo dough to the tart pan (make sure to have a tart pan with a removable bottom). Press the Oreo dough into the tart pan to cover all the bottom and the sides of the tart.

Step 3: Once the dough is all spread out into the tart pan, put it in the freezer for 15 minutes. Don’t leave for longer than 15 minutes. After 15 minutes put the tart pan in the fridge so that you can work on the blackberry mousse filling.

Step 4: Creating the blackberry mousse. Add blackberries into the blender until they are pureed, then add the cream cheese, sugar and vanilla essence until it is a smooth consistency. You might need to stop the blender and stir some ingredients around to ensure all is mixed correctly and there are no lumps.

Step 5: Whip the cream until firm in a separate bowl.

Step 6: Hydrate the gelatin sheets.

Step 7: Heat milk in the microwave but not to boiling (needs to be hot). Make sure to drain the gelatin sheets and then add them to the hot milk and stir until they have dissolved into the milk.

Step 8: Add the milk to the blackberry puree and mix until all is combined well.

Step 9: Pour into the bowl with the whipped cream and carefully mix well folding over slowly to mix using enveloping movements.

Step 10: Pour the blackberry mouse into the tart pan and smooth out the mixture to make sure it sets with no lumps or bumps on the top of the tart.

Step 11: Refrigerate the tart for at least 4 hours (preferably overnight) to set.

The stunningly gorgeous No-Bake Oreo Blackberry Mousse Tart cut and ready to eat!

Once the mousse is set you can safely remove the tart from the pan. If you have some difficulty removing your tart from the pan The Cozy Plum has a great instructional video that might help.

YUMMY! It looks so fantastic…Don’t you just want a slice?

Decorate with: Blackberries, blueberries, nuts, dark chocolate, raspberries or whatever takes your fancy. Serve with fresh cream or ice cream.

    Enjoy this gorgeous treat!

    POST FEAST REVIEW

I was seriously blown away by how ridiculously easy this tart was to whip up! I mean, no cooking at all—just some fridge and freezer magic, and bam! Talk about a turbo-speed dessert! And the taste? Oh, boy, let me tell you—it was a mouthful of pure creamy goodness with that punchy blackberry zing. But guess what? Not only did it taste like a dream, but it also looked like a showstopper! Seriously, it’s a double win when delicious meets stunning!

The added blackberries, blueberries and flowers make this no-bake tart look magical.

    WOULD I MAKE THIS AGAIN?

Oh, heck yes! This tart was an absolute flavour bomb and a sight for sore eyes! But you know what? I’m already brainstorming some wild ideas for the next round. Picture this: a funky dance of colours in the mousse—maybe a raspberry rave or a mixed berry bash with blackberries and blueberries. I’m aiming for this majestic deep purple hue in the mousse that’ll pop against the rich, dark Oreo cookie base. Talk about a visual treat!

And hey, why stick to one big tart when you can have a squad of mini-tarts, right? I’m thinking of snagging some individual tart pans for these bite-sized delights. They’re perfect for those quick, “I-deserve-a-treat” moments.

But wait, the party doesn’t stop there! I’m on a mission to jazz up the decorations too. Picture this: a canvas of melted dark chocolate creating artsy lines, topped with a crunchy medley of roasted nuts—pistachios, almonds, and maybe a sprinkle of other berries for that extra pizzazz. Get ready, taste buds, because we’re about to take this tart game to a whole new level.

Cakeover Magic: Transforming Store-Bought Sponge Cakes into a Dream Wedding Cake

Mission: To turn store-bought sponge cakes into a stunning wedding centrepiece.

    Challenge accepted!

Armed with creativity, a vision, and a few store-bought sponge cakes from Woolworths, I ventured into the world of cakeovers to craft a delightful masterpiece fit for a dreamy wedding. Plus, with the help of gorgeous fresh flowers from Fine Flowers in Katoomba, the transformation was truly enchanting.

    What is a “cakeover”?

A “cakeover” is a playful term used to describe the process of transforming an existing or store-bought cake into a more elaborate or personalized creation through decoration, embellishments, or alterations. Think of it as a cake makeover.

It involves taking a pre-made or basic cake and enhancing its appearance or flavour to suit a specific occasion or personal preferences better.

Cakeovers are often chosen for various reasons, such as time constraints, budget considerations, or simply to showcase creativity by customising a store-bought cake to suit a particular celebration, whether it’s a wedding, birthday, anniversary, or any other special occasion.

    The Quest for Cake Perfection

    Step 1: Cake Acquisition
A trip to my local Woolworths store presented an array of sponge cake options. Opting for simplicity, I chose plain sponge cakes – the perfect blank canvas for my cakeover project.

    Step 2: Visionary Designs
Inspiration struck as I envisioned a multi-tiered cake exuding elegance. With a touch of whimsy in mind, fresh flowers were to be the pièce de résistance. The flowers allowed for a touch of colour and made the cake look so pretty.

    Step 3: Assembly Time
Stacking the sponge cakes, I sandwiched them with layers of luscious cream and fresh Panama passionfruit from Todarello’s Katoomba Village Fruit Market. The passionfruit gave a great flavour and added a summer feel to the wedding cake.

    Creating the white icing

Mix the below ingredients in a bowl. You can mix with a fork or a mixer to ensure you get fluffy icing.

    • 2 cups of icing sugar
    • 2 egg whites
    • A few drops of lemon juice
    • A teaspoon of vanilla essence

Once all cakes are staked then ice all the cake as smoothly as you can. Use a scraper to have the icing on the cake look smooth and if you have parts of the sponge cake showing that is fine, this will allow you to have the naked cake look. If you don’t want the naked cake look make sure to cover the cake with the white icing and smooth it out with the scraper. If you want a wavy pattern, you can have a scraper that will do that too.

The scrapers I used for my cakeover wedding cake.

    Step 4: The Flourishing Finish
Here’s where the magic truly unfolded. Fresh blooms from Fine Flowers in Katoomba were carefully placed atop the cake tiers, infusing vibrant colours and natural beauty into the creation. The flowers were added with paper straws to make sure the stem wasn’t put into the cake. The flowers would then be easily removed to allow the cake to be cut for serving.

I put the flowers on one side of the top of the cake and then on an angle to have some flowers on the bottom of the cake. This allowed more decoration for the top of the cake if needed. I also added a gold “love” cake topper.

Flowers were put in paper straws to then add to the cake

I adore visiting Fine Flowers in Katoomba. They always have stunning flowers that put a smile on my face.

    The Splendor of Cakeovers

    Personal Touches
Though the base was store-bought, the personalised touch came through the decorations. The flowers’ choice, arrangement, and overall design spoke volumes about the couple’s style and taste.

    Budget-Friendly Brilliance
By utilising ready-made cakes, the focus shifted from baking stress to creative embellishment, ensuring a stunning outcome without breaking the bank.

    Time-Efficient Elegance
Crafting a cakeover was a swift process, perfect for those in need of a last-minute, yet spectacular, dessert for a special occasion like a wedding.

    Lessons Learned & Tips Shared

    • Be Resourceful: Embrace store-bought items as a canvas for your creativity. A little transformation can yield exceptional results.
    • Freshness is Key: Utilise fresh flowers or edible decorations for an instant upgrade to the cake’s aesthetics.
    • Keep it Simple: Sometimes, simplicity speaks volumes. Focus on a few key elements for a striking overall effect.
    • Practice Patience: Attention to detail is crucial. Take your time arranging the decorations to achieve the desired look.

    Conclusion

With a stroke of creativity and a sprinkle of resourcefulness, a store-bought sponge cake evolved into a mesmerizing wedding centerpiece. The cakeover journey not only showcased the potential of simple elements but also highlighted the beauty of personalisation and affordability in crafting a memorable dessert. So, whether it’s a wedding or any special occasion, remember, a store-bought cake can be the perfect canvas for your cakeover dreams!

    Costs

So what are the costs associated with creating a cakeover wedding cake?

It might not surprise you that a cakeover will really save you money and still create a yummy and fantastic-looking cake for your special day.

You will see from the table below that creating a wedding cake from an existing cake is the cheaper option.

A simple search online found that if you had a cake that had four tiers and above you would generally pay between $420 – $650.

    2 x Woolworths Double Unfilled Sponge 460g$12.00 ($6 each)
    Icing$2.50
    Flowers$13.00
    Cream$2.80
2 egg whites$1.25 (based on 6 eggs that cost $3.75)
    Panama passionfruit$4.60 ($2.30 each)
    Icing scraper$4.40 (VIP Spotlight price)
Love cake topper decoration $11.20 (VIP Spotlight price)
    Total:$51.75
The stunning cakeover wedding cake is decorated and ready for the cake topper

If you already had eggs, icing, the icing scraper or didn’t want the love cake topper decoration (all of this would take $19.35 off the amount above) the new cost of the cake would be: $32.40

As you see, you can make the cake cheaper if you wish.

The flowers make this cake look so pretty

“Pink chrysanthemums represent longevity, attraction, and romance, making them a great choice for a first date or a new love. In general, chrysanthemums are believed to represent happiness, love, longevity, and joy.”

    https://blossmcart.com/blog/chrysanthemum-meaning-and-symbolism/

Pink Roses mean Happiness, Grace, and Thankfulnes

Perfect flowers for a wedding cake!

The cakeover wedding cake is all decorated and ready
    for the big event

    It Was The Night Light

Note: This is a post from Wednesday, July 20, 2016. This was when my third child was still a baby.

The baby was sleeping through the night on some days and others waking up at 4am and screaming the place down. I did not understand what had made a sound sleeping baby suddenly become so upset. I also could not figure out why he slept all night some days and the others he would wake. The twins were sleeping through the night after they were three months old.

I firstly thought that it could be his nappy. Solved and new one put on.

Secondly thought it could be that he was hungry. No he did not want food and would rather scream at me and also to fidget, turn over and over (he loves rolling over and likes to do this every chance he gets) on my lap and not get comfortable! Yes this was very annoying.

I tried the formula again and he would not have anything to do with it. OH geez more crying (especially in my ear and so loud that you cannot hear anything afterwards) and wiggling is going to happen now. I had to cuddle him until he passed out again and to make sure he was snoring before I could make the attempt of putting him in his cot.

Could it be bad dreams?????? Who knows and at this stage, I was trying to think of anything that could be waking up our baby.

My sleepy little boy. I finally figured out why he was waking up at 4am. It was really simple actually. Read on to find out.
My sleepy little boy. I finally figured out why he was waking up at 4am. It was really simple actually. Read on to find out.

Fast forward to after we came home from Vivid (June Long Weekend), it was a Sunday afternoon. We came home earlier than expected from the city due to one of the twins being ill. Hubby fed the baby at about 3pm and he fell into a deep sleep and then the baby was wrapped up and put in his bed. All good.

11pm came around on the same Sunday evening. Hubby and I were watching television and I said when did we feed the baby? He thought about it. It was around 3pm. Gosh I thought. The baby has been asleep for a long time. I told hubby that I think we need to check that all is okay with Alexander and that there was nothing wrong.

He cautioned me… He said, “If you wake him it is your problem to sort out”. I told him fine as I was getting worried due to the fact that he had been asleep so long.

I carefully opened his door and heard breathing and the baby turn over. All good. However, due to the fact that it was afternoon when the baby was put down for a nap his night light was not switched on. Normally we keep it on to help Alexander not get upset if it is too dark. The twins had a night light when they were babies and we noticed that when Alexander was little he wanted the reassurance of the light.

However this could be the reason that he was waking up at 4am and being so out of sorts. He must have been half asleep and then the light woke him fully. Without the night light when he wakes even a little, he rolls over and goes back to sleep.

How simple the answer was. Turn off the night light! Ever since coming back from Vivid we have left the babies night light off and suprise, he has slept through the night.

Yep genius here…. Turn off the light and the baby will sleep! You heard it here. Sounds really obvious doesn’t it. The light woke him up.

I told my nana this and she said, really it was just a light and all you needed to do was turn it off. I said yes and she laughed and laughed at me. Yes it sounds silly and so simple but when you are so used to your routine and thinking that it is needed you just do it. You don’t question it.

Have you found there was something so simple and obvious that has made the world of difference with your kids or baby? Was it as simple as turning off the night light? Let us know.

    Download The Mother’s Day Code

I created “The Mother’s Day Code” to help you with pressie ideas and treats for mum/mom. Feel free to download the images below.

I have one British/Australian version and the other is the US version.

As a mother, you don’t expect to have expensive gifts, although I would love to go on a trip around the world and be whisked away to a day spa for a holiday by myself, I know this is not going to happen. Well, it could if I magically have heaps of money. (I can live in hope, can’t I??)

In reality, some nice flowers and lunch with hubby and the kids are fine. Or even better is a gift the kids made themselves.

So if you are like me and just wish to be given some nice gifts from your loved ones this downloadable code might come in handy.

Download both versions of the Mother’s Day Code here:

Have you got your mum something special for Sunday? Are you organising breakfast in bed? A nice plant to cheer up the house or the garden? Or taking Mum out for a long and relaxing lunch? Whatever you have planned I hope you have an amazing day.

I hope the Mother’s Day Code helps you out.

    Method

    1. Mix the dry ingredients in a bowl, and melt the syrup and butter in a saucepan. Add the baking soda and water to the syrup mix.
    2. Mix the wet and dry ingredients, adding water if necessary.
    3. Separate and roll the mixture into small balls, and flatten them on oven trays.
    4. Bake at 150°C (300°F) for about 20 minutes or until golden brown.

The finished biscuits are quite chewy and crisp, and have a long shelf-life.

Kids helped me make this batch. All ready to go in the oven.

All cooked and ready to eat. They were very yummy! We did not have a huge dinner due to the ANZAC biscuit afternoon tea.

    Make Chilli Tuna Veggie Noodles

If you are like me you sometimes run out of things for dinners. Yes sad but true. This tasty recipe that I’m about to share only uses some items from the pantry, fridge and takes no time at all to cook.

It is easy, quick to make and of course super yummy, that said you need to like chilli’s. I do love chilli so therefore this is not an issue. If you don’t you can substitute another type of flavour to not have it as spicy. Remember this recipe is flexible so you can amend it to suit your tastes.

    chillitunaveggienoodles_web

    Ingredients

    • 2 x John West Tuna Tempters Chilli 95g. I was only cooking for myself so 2 cans were ample, however if you needed more spice or sauce you might find you need to add more cans, say 3 or 4.
    • Bok Choy
    • Capcisum
    • Onion
    • Udon Noodles
    • Carrot
    • Champignons/mushrooms (As I had the champignons in the pantry these were used. If I had fresh mushrooms I would have used them.)
    • Sesame Seeds for sprinkling on the noodles if you wish or you can crush up some almonds and use them for some extra crunch.

All the vegetables cut and ready to be added to the meal.
All the vegetables cut and ready to be added to the meal.

    Method

    1. I got all my vegetables chopped and ready, all aside from the onion were put in a bowl.
    2. Put on a pot of water to boil. Once boiling add the udon noodles. These should cook for about 5 mins. I like mine soft so I might cook mine a little longer. If they are nearly to the softness I like I take the pot off the heat and leave them in the hot water until I’m ready to serve. This way the noodles are hot and just the way I like them.

      The udon noodles cooking away.

    3. When a pan was heated up with some olive oil I cooked the onion until it was translucent.

      Cooking the onions.
      Cooking the onions.
    4. Now add the other vegetables to the pan and have them simmer a while until they are partly cooked. I like to have the bok choy mix around in the olive oil to add a bit of flavour. I leave it for about 5 mins or so.
    5. It is now time to add the chill tuna. To make the most out the sauce you need to make sure you get everything out of the tin. I like to add a little water that allows tuna that has stuck to the bottom and edges to dislodge and the water adds to the sauce. This is when you will know if you need an extra tin or so for the sauce. It does depend on how many will be eating but you can adjust this so don’t worry.

I've added the tuna and now getting the rest out of the tin by adding some water. The addition of water also helps with making more of the sauce.

    6. Remove the noodles from the water if they are still there. Split up the noodles into warm bowls.
    7. If you would like sesame seeds/almonds sprinkled over the noodles now is the time to do this. You also could add a little soy sauce to the noodles for flavour, but not too much or it gets too salty.noodlessesameseeds_web
    8. Your sauce is now ready with the vegetables. Add it to the bowl with the noodles.
    9. Your meal is ready and you can now eat! If you wish you can also to garnish it with parsley/coriander.

Your quick and easy dinner is now ready to eat. Chilli Tuna Veggie Noodles you will find so good that you will add it to your meal plans.

Ticket Frustration: The Elusive Taylor Swift Experience

I spent Wednesday and Friday this week trying to get Taylor Swift tickets. And yes I am one of many that never got the chance to get to purchase anything at all.

My girls were so excited that Tay Tay was coming to Australia. They were desperate to see her or just be at the concert in any capacity at all.

I knew that everyone would be wanting to go and the competition for tickets would be fierce but never thought it would be this bad that you wouldn’t even be let in for a chance to purchase by Ticketek.

I made sure I had all passwords, code for presale and credit card ready. I logged in early to be in the queue or so I thought and then spent hours and hours not getting through to get tickets.

The page kept on saying don’t refresh or leave the lounge. I heard that others just got on and instantly got tickets. Why can’t I get tickets? When will I be let in and when is it my turn to buy tickets? You would have thought after hours of waiting it would be my turn at some point. But no, my turn never came.

I do know that not everyone can get tickets to a concert. However, if you are on a system and it says that you be let in soon you should be after waiting for ages and ages.

I had many browsers open on different computers as well as on my mobile. Please forgive the breakfast bowl as I was fearful of leaving my desk in case I did get in to get tickets. Also doing work too at the same time.

I have since learned that the system is random and wasn’t letting the next person into the queue. I thought that this was frustrating and made me so angry. If it is indeed random then I can close my browser windows and just cross my fingers that I might be that lucky person to get tickets next.

A few times, I tried to just open new windows and close others as I have not progressed and nothing is happening. Still nothing. No progress. Still in the horrible wait with the line going across the screen brainwashing me to stay although my actions and the actions of the page are not changing. It was maddening. It was crazy and it all resulted in a very upset and stressed-out mummy.

How can you have a system that is completely random and then tell people to stay in the queue, have codes for presale and more to show that you will at some stage be let into the magical area to buy tickets.

I was magically let in at some stage on my mobile on Wednesday during the presale, however, there were no boxes to drop down to enter any info. No area to enter my presale code and therefore I couldn’t progress. If this was different I would have indeed purchased tickets and our outcome would be different. But this was not the case. I couldn’t see what to do and tapped every part of the screen and changed the view. Was it a different capability for mobile users compared to desktop?

FFS really I get to purchase and then cannot do anything! Of course, that happens.

Friday was no different, I thought I would try different browsers and open browsers at different times to see if I can indeed be one of the random lucky people getting tickets, but this was not to be. I was finally let in after 6 plus hours to find that I couldn’t purchase the 4 tickets I needed and even found that 3 tickets couldn’t be purchased. I looked at all the other days and of course, they were sold out and therefore we had missed all chances and opportunities to go at all.

In all my years purchasing concert tickets this has been the worst experience ever. Below are some recommendations:

    • You should have been able to be let in for the presale more easily to allow more people the chance.
    • If Taylor Swift had more concerts around Australia there would be more chance of getting a ticket. I know she added an extra show for Melbourne and Sydney but these are the only ones for the whole of the country. Three in total for Melbourne and four in Sydney. Everyone all over was purchasing tickets to these concerts. If for example there were concerts in Perth, Brisbane, South Australia or other places it would have allowed more people to go.
    • A better system for allowing people to get tickets is needed. If you have a presale ticket system with codes it should be on priority and next in line not a random thing that it is only down to the internet gods that you magically get tickets.
    • Not allow people to have more tickets to other concerts – give everyone a chance.

I did want to see if I can get the girls tickets to the concert for their birthday this year and of course for their Christmas present but it was not to be. I am wanting to create more experiences rather than buy stuff.

Maybe I can get tickets to another concert, however, I do hope that the way to purchase tickets for whatever concert it is isn’t like what the Ticketek experience was.

I think I am scarred by this experience to secure tickets and exhausted over the whole event. If I never see the blue line going back and forth on another webpage I will be very happy.

Yep, I know that some magically were lucky to get tickets super quick, but for the people like me that tried for hours on end to secure nothing I am sad to hear this. It shows that the ticketing system is flawed and really not fair. Especially for those that waited hours for both days for the chance to be let through the next screen to part with lots of money for tickets to this sought-after show.

I was happy to part with lots of money to get my tickets but one thing I think is unforgivable is how many tried and were never let in to purchase at all. I don’t get how it was never my turn or others’ turn either. How is this possible????

    Hamilton Island Pet Rock 300 x 600

Ticket availability is ultimately determined by factors like venue capacity and artist preferences, so with the huge demand for the limited tickets for each concert and the number of people wanting said tickets, I don’t think I stood a chance at all to get any at all.

How did you find the experience of getting Taylor Swift tickets? Were you one of the lucky ones? Or are you like me and tried for hours and came up empty-handed?

Selena Gomez takes Social Media Break & Why You Should Too!

Why is it a good idea to take a technology break? Find out 5 reasons why taking a technology detox can help you feel better.

Selena Gomez‘s decision to take a break from social media for the sake of her mental health is a brave and wise choice. While social media has its benefits, such as staying connected with loved ones and discovering new ideas and information, it can also be a source of stress and negative emotions for teenagers, as it has the potential to amplify feelings of comparison, bullying, and isolation.

P!nk has recently shared that she has received hateful and horrible messages in the media over very old articles years ago. The focus should really be on her new album and all the hard work that went into it, however, the media are focused on rehashing things from when she was in her 20’s, just silly if you ask me. The issue here is that P!nk is honest in her interviews and tells it how it is – I find it interesting that if you have an honest opinion even if you say that you didn’t get on with someone and have since made up with that person that the news that these comments keep getting retold and beat up. Honestly, I think P!nk is amazing and love her raw honesty, passion and hard work. See the social media bashing is happening to us all!

I’m a lot older than Selena and I’m an avid user of social media. However, there are times that I look at some people’s images and accounts and get rather depressed. I am sad about how amazing their life looks; they look stunning in their designer outfits, they have an awesome home and have the perfect vacation overseas with their family. Oh how I would wish for that too. I like Selena have purposefully taken a break from being online, removing my phone from being close to me, not taking my phone with me when I am out or not looking at any of my accounts or sharing what I am up to for a while. What about you?

    Teenagers and social media

Firstly, social media encourages teenagers to constantly compare themselves to others. This constant comparison can lead to feelings of inadequacy, low self-esteem, and even depression. Teenagers are bombarded with images of “perfect” bodies, luxurious lifestyles, and seemingly flawless relationships, which can lead to unrealistic expectations and a distorted view of reality.

Secondly, social media can be a breeding ground for bullying. Anonymous accounts and online anonymity can make it easy for bullies to target their victims, causing serious emotional distress. Cyberbullying can have severe consequences, including depression, anxiety, and even suicide.

Lastly, social media can prevent teenagers from developing meaningful relationships in real-life situations. It’s essential for teenagers to have face-to-face interactions with their peers and to engage in activities that allow them to develop social skills, such as team sports, clubs, and volunteering. Social media can be a tempting substitute for real-life interactions, but it can never fully replace the importance of human connection.

My kids have had some issues with bullies online (It is so easy to be horrible to people when you are anonymous, right!). These bullies used fake accounts and created made-up things about the kids to share with their friend groups. All of this was disgusting and horrible and of course not true, however for teenagers or younger kids having this happen is a nightmare. I did try and tell my kids to just not look at the phone and ignore it. Or maybe just delete the app altogether. However, this response was met by the kids saying “my friends will think that we are ignoring them and more!” My response was that if these people are truly your friends ignoring them on the app is not the end of the world, then explaining in real life via a face-to-face will be what is needed.

When I grew up there were no mobile phones, no internet and no social media! The only way to connect was face to face and if you did have a disagreement you would just not play with this person for a while until you made up or it could be forever depending on the relationship or what had happened.

Social media has its benefits, it’s important for teenagers to be aware of the potential negative effects it can have on their mental health. Taking breaks from social media and engaging in real-life interactions can help teenagers develop meaningful relationships, improve their social skills, and prevent feelings of comparison, bullying, and isolation.

Being online constantly can have both positive and negative effects on mental health. On the one hand, it can provide social connection and support, especially for individuals who may feel isolated or marginalized. It can also serve as a platform for self-expression and creativity.

On the other hand, social media can also lead to negative consequences. Excessive social media use can contribute to feelings of anxiety, depression, and loneliness, especially if individuals compare themselves unfavourably to others on social media. The pressure to maintain a curated online presence can also be stressful and overwhelming, negatively impacting mental health, and not a real way of living and being. It would take a toll on anyone to have to keep up with the illusion of fantasy at all times.

Taking a break from social media, as Selena Gomez did, can be a helpful way to prioritize mental health and focus on oneself. It can provide an opportunity for individuals to disconnect from the constant barrage of information and comparison on social media, and instead focus on personal growth and well-being. I for one have felt that there has been a lot of bad news, so stepping away from the news sites, social media and tv reports for me has been helpful too.

Being online all the time is not good for you. A break is a good thing to have.

Taking a technology detox, or a break from technology, can offer several benefits:

    1. Reduced stress and anxiety: Technology can be overwhelming and create feelings of stress and anxiety. Taking a break from technology can help you relax and unwind.

    2. Improved sleep: Exposure to the blue light emitted by electronic devices can interfere with your sleep cycle. Taking a break from technology can help improve your sleep quality and quantity.

    3. Increased productivity: Technology can be a major distraction, and taking a break can help you focus on important tasks and be more productive.

    4. Improved mental health: Constant use of technology can lead to feelings of depression and isolation. Taking a break can help you connect with people in real life and improve your overall mental health.

    5. More time for other activities: Technology can be time-consuming, and taking a break can free up time for other activities, such as exercise, hobbies, and spending time with loved ones.

Overall, a technology detox can help you recharge, refocus, and reconnect with yourself and others.

Have you taken a technology detox? Was it just on your social media? How did you feel after your break?

Yep and I understand the irony of me writing this for my online blog…even if you just take a break from your phone for the weekend, or just during the evenings, it will help you feel better.

    Mother’s Day Debrief

I sit here looking at friends and families photos from Mother’s Day, these images are of happy families all looking like they have had a relaxing, fun and very happy day.

Mind you, these images are all posted on social media so maybe they are from 10 minutes of the day when everyone was smiling? Was it after the stunning stylish image that the kids continued their arguments? Did one have a tantrum to end all tantrums? Did the mother think “Why can’t my family just behave for a simple outing for lunch?”

Mums are always busy and Mother’s Day is the same.

After seeing all these carefully curated images, I then thought about my day.

There were a few fun and happy moments, but it was mostly exhausting due to kids arguing, one kid having several tantrums, kids not listening, no one doing anything they were told, when we finally got to lunch the youngest refused to sit on his chair and decided to be under the table and then decide to annoy his sisters and me. I just wondered why we bothered to go out at all during all this and that my thought of staying home seemed like a better idea.

Before we left the house all kids and hubby gave me wonderful and thoughtful presents in honour of Mother’s Day.

I don’t understand why everyone cannot behave for one day!

Personally, I would have preferred to stay home and do some things that I have not had time to do, being on my own would mean I can concentrate.

I did post some nice photos of the kids as they were having fun and I wanted to mark the day. However it would have been nice to have more moments that were photo worthy today.

I am a mother who is over all the drama, the crazy carry on of kids arguing and more! Would it still be Mother’s Day if I made the kids and hubby leave so I can have the day for me?

Have you ever had a Mother’s Day without the family? I know I would miss the kids, but the silence and calm might make me not miss them too much. Finally being able to do a few projects on my own would be so nice right now.

The kids did wish me a Happy Mother’s Day tonight before bedtime so that was rather sweet, and I gave them a cuddle and thanked them.

Maybe next year will be better.

Day 1 to Day 66 of Learning at Home

Today is officially the last day kids in New South Wales are learning from home. The twins watched their carefully crafted morning breakfast show that the teachers create every morning, however this time it had guest hosts – two students telling us what is on the agenda for work today and that it is the last day of being at home. All children go back to face to face learning full time starting next week on the 25th of May, 2020. (Putting the date in here for historical reference)

I’m grateful that our response to the virus has been good and we have low to no infections, so that is a good sign. With restrictions easing and schools opening we are very lucky, many schools in America are set to be closed for the rest of the year and kids are going to be learning from home for the remainder of 2020.

Insert a HUGE Happy dance and ENORMOUS SQUEALS OF DELIGHT from every parent here.

Juggling work, kids, learning from home and keeping an active four-year-old entertained has been super difficult to impossible.

We’ve had arguments, fights, tears and just defiance to do any work. Work that has been completed seems to be more of the fun stuff; art, drawing and the creative components to worksheets. Some maths and other work has been finished but with a lot of arguments and mummy explaining for the billionth time that the work needs to be done. To achieve final completion for a lot of the work I had to sit with both children and help them out, this meant that I could not do what I needed to do and arguments for who I was helping and telling the other child they need to just wait.

Geez if I had $1 for every time I tell some to wait I would a wealthy woman.

Here are my thoughts of day 1 and we are now coming up to 2 months of being at home. I did think we would be still homeschooling for the rest of term 2 and come back face to face in term 3 so this is a good thing.   I just hope that there are no outbreaks of coronavirus and everyone stays healthy.

The school still has restrictions, there will be no excursions or incursions, no volunteers, no visitors, no drinking at the bubblers, no assembles and kids told that they need to wash their hands and understand if they are sick not to come to school.

Day 1 of schooling from home 24th March 2020

I’m doing our bit to keep us and the community safe.

It is only day 1 of having all 3 kids at home and to put it mildly it was horrible and more like a nightmare conspiracy against mummy.

Mainly the youngest has been horrible and is acting like he is tired still. He has been hitting out, having tantrums, crying and just being awful. I have spent the majority of my day dealing with arguments, incidents, making sure the little one stays away from the bigger kids to allow them to do their schoolwork and all the fallout.

I’ve been ready for a lie-down and a G and T from about 12 pm or earlier actually.  I am keen to have a nice drink later and as I am writing this the kids are having a bath, then dinner and then bed – they are going to bed and there will be no arguments…bed is happening soon for all 3.  Do you hear that they really, really need to go to bed!

This said, we have done some work on Mathletics, art, and drew a pagoda from scratch. I even added to the theme of Pagodas by watching some educational videos on YouTube. Now the kids want to make their own pagodas out of clay but one kid didn’t seal the bag of the clay and therefore our supply is rock hard.

The kids have had some outdoor time on the trampoline and helping their brother search for bugs and insects.

My little boy did do some drawing and art and practised writing his name. The rest of the day he has been collecting his cars, playing and making our day interesting.  Yes, interesting is a nice way to say challenging and difficult.

I’m not sure that I can handle weeks or even months of this.

I do know that schools and daycare are still open but with work drying up for us, and limited funds having a kid in childcare wasn’t helping us financially. Plus with the fact that they said that if we could have kids at home we should, our stance was if the twins were home so should our youngest as well.

How are you all faring with being at home teaching the kids?  I for one am feeling exhausted and over it already and it is only day 1.

Day 66 – The Final Day of Learning at Home!

Today is the 22nd of May 2020. It is now the last day of the twins learning from home.

It has been fraught with mixed emotions. We embraced the changes and did as we were instructed by the school to help the kids continue with their studies, however dealing with two strong-willed children who don’t want to do work is exhausting. Maybe they should have just gone back to school you say, well this was my thought after day 1 but we fought the urge. It was actually hubby that fought it, I could have easily dropped off the twins at school and been happy with that decision.

I was over it all as I seemed to be the only parent making sure they were working on tasks they should be, worried about assignments due. Hubby and the kids kept on telling me they had plenty of time and then the day before it was due the assignment was done in a rush…and were accompanied by screaming, yelling and attacks at me about “Why am I not helping them do their work!”

Geez!!! If you hadn’t left it to the last minute and done a bit a day it would be done and not rushed, I kept on saying!

The teachers went above and beyond to get online content ready in Google Classroom for all the kids. It was very well done and in a short space of time. I also thought it was very easy to navigate and to find what work you are working on and then submit it to the teachers. This ease of use seemed to be lost as the kids decided to not click on all the work that was assigned and do other tasks. I then ask them what are you working on to get told nothing or something that is not school work.

I have now taken to logging on as the twins to see what school work is due and has been assigned, I print out all needed worksheets, run through the tasks with both kids and get them to work on items that are due soon. I then check on them to make sure they are doing what they should be doing and if they need any help.

We are a little behind in some work but for my own sanity, I have concentrated on reading, writing, and maths as the main areas. We have worked on some other things that have been assigned, I am hoping that next week the teachers will assist my kids to catch up if they are indeed behind.

I know I will not miss the crazy that has become our normal due to homeschooling and having all kids at home, and not to mention trying to find some magical free hours that are uninterrupted to get some work done. I’m looking forward to the girls going back to face to face lessons and for their learning to get back to normal.

It has been nice to sleep in a little, not be in a rush to get anywhere, not have to do lunches (although I still do but not packed ones), and not have to do the school drop off and pick up. This has been one of the more relaxing parts of learning from home.

I’ve told the kids that we are living through a huge event in history, a global pandemic and the last one was in 1918. The older kids understand the history and what has been happening but the four-year-old is not understanding why we have been at home, and he has only recently started back at pre-kinder.

We will look back on this time and be amazed at how we survived, adapted and stayed together to be safe and well.

Although there were many good times I have been hanging for the world to return to normal or at least somewhat normal. I live in a small house, and this means if kids and hubby are home I have no space to do things for me.

The kids have taken over the living room for their school work and when Alexander is here I need to keep him busy, it has only been this week and last that he started back at care, so today is a reprieve for me to allow me to do a few items of work, and help the twins out with any needed school work.

Doing some creative arts at home
Doing some creative arts at home

Here is a sample day for us while kids are learning from home:

    • Kids and everyone gets up and have breakfast.
    • Drop Alexander off at care, if not at care, I look after him which means he wants to play with his sisters and his sisters decide to play with him instead of doing schoolwork.
    • I ask what they need to work on after they watch the Good morning show from the teachers.
    • They say not much or don’t respond (yes I am invisible and they don’t answer even if I am next to them) so I log on to see what assignments and work is due.
    • I then print out about 5-6 items that are not done or complete.
    • Kids work on one task, then take about million trips to the loo and to the kitchen to get a snack or drink.
    • Ask if the work they started is complete and the answer is either nothing or NO.
    • Go in to see if they need help, they have a fit at me as they can do it on their own, I then mention that they have other work to do and give them another 30mins to finish the task they have already had hours working on.
    • More trips to the bathroom and then the realization that it is now recess and they need to have a break.  Why do they need a break when they have had one every 5 mins!
    • Break Again? I tell them to get back to work and finish their tasks.
    • They have recess and play on the trampoline for what feels like hours to then come in and do the same with other tasks they don’t complete and then more arguments and negotiations about what they are doing and when it will be finished.
    • What! It is lunch now??? Again they need food and of course outdoor time. No work is happening again. Finally, they are back at their desk and doing something, I sit with them to ensure that something gets done and they argue about how it is all too hard and they don’t understand.
    • Now they claim they need to go to the bathroom again and are incredibly thirsty and need a drink or else they might die.
    • Many trips back and forth to the kitchen, bathroom and then work desk, but not a lot of work is happening.
    • The kids are worse than cats, in and out of the house, at least I don’t have to open doors for them.
    • The kids now finally notice it is the end of school time so they bugger off to the garden to spend the rest of the day on the trampoline.
    • I’m not sure what work has been done or finished and really don’t believe any work has been done at all!
    • There were many failed attempts to get kids back in the house to complete schoolwork, but it was a giant relief that the house is finally quiet, mummy has a headache and needs to finally do one piece of work that she has been trying to do all day!
    • Mummy is over it all and wants the kids to just do their job. Why is this such a hard ask????

I have finally got my desk back as the kids like using my computer for Minecraft and some of their Google Classwork.

I have looked at many other parents social media during the last two months, and it seems many kids have really enjoyed the remote learning from the school, they got stuck in and just did the work. Pictures that were posted showed kids in the school uniform, kids looking happy and of course many boasting about how their child is loving this time and getting all their work done in record time. I was like this as a kid, without wearing the school uniform at home.

When I was younger I did correspondence for three months while I lived on a boat travelling the islands of Queensland. I got my school work done in a few days and then swam and played for the rest of the week. I was told that if I didn’t do my work I couldn’t go swimming and as a kid who lived and breathed the beach and the sea this was a deal-breaker, so I did my school work.

It saddened me that my children didn’t share this drive and idea to get things all done to allow them to do more fun things. I even signed them up to some free stem coding classes and thought that this would be great, Tynker can also help you program things for Minecraft too. See I’m working with their interest in Minecraft.

Maybe my kids just need to be at school for the routine and discipline of their teachers? Maybe being at school just helps get them into the right mindset?

Working hard at their school work - I had to coax a smile out of one of them, the other one decided she didn't want to cooperate
Working hard at their schoolwork – I had to coax a smile out of one of them, the other one decided she didn’t want to cooperate

As I write this the girls are quietly working away on their classwork, there are still many outstanding tasks but my aim today is to see if we can finish everything that is due. Or at least come close.

Maybe it has taken us two months to just get into the swing of things….although the kids have decided they had to have an early lunch, maybe this will mean that they will do more without another lunch break?

One thing that the kids have done more of is to help around the house and to do more cooking. They have cooked us all dinner a few nights a week and have refined their cake baking skills. Have you been baking more? I think it is a natural consequence of being at home more especially when cafes and restaurants were closed.

It is also the last day of being together at home so I want to take them out for a hot chocolate or something to celebrate and to mark the occasion.

You know how I said they were quietly working away, well that is no more after all of me showing everyone what to do and where the work was people are claiming they don’t know what to do and where the work is!

Geeez… another day spent supervising kids with their school work, I’m just grateful this is the last day of this struggle here.

How have you found the time at home with the kids? Did they enjoy learning from home or did they struggle?

My girls have said that they prefer school to learning from home, so it is going to be nice for them to go back to where they are better suited. I was a bit worried that they might prefer elements of working from home and it could be a hard transition back. However, with the twins saying they don’t really like remote learning I think the transition will be okay and nothing to be worried about.

Also, mummy and daddy are super keen for the house to be peaceful and for us to have our time again.

What are you looking forward to when school goes back full-time next week?

NAN A2 Toddler Milk Drink for Out of this World Adventures

Toddlers are busy creatures; they cannot keep still or stop moving.

My little toddler is having so much fun with his weird and wonderful adventures, it is hard to keep up!

Playing superheroes at the park with Super Bark the Dog!
Playing superheroes at the park with Super Bark the Dog!

He has been to space and loves being a superhero.

Mummy has also taken various trips to the moon and other planets too!  We are frequent visitors to outer space, maybe there is a frequent flyer card for travelling so far? I’m sure I’ve collected millions of frequent flyer points by now!

On top of his normal diet, one thing that allows my little space explorer to keep on going is the energy he gets from his NAN A2 toddler milk drink.

NAN A2 toddler milk has some essential vitamins and minerals to help support my adventurous toddler needs, and lately, he has needed extra due to a growth spurt.

Having a cool drink of NAN A2 Stage 3 Toddler Milk
Having a cool drink of NAN A2 Stage 3 Toddler Milk

As you can see Alexander has been super busy with his cars, at the park and going to space with mummy.

My little boy has been super hungry and has wanted more of everything! Giving him a sippy cup of his NAN A2 toddler milk drink means that he is getting some essential vitamins and minerals he needs.

The toddler milk helps me as a mummy to make sure he gets what he needs. I find that he sometimes eats lots and then goes for days not eating anything at all.  NAN A2 Stage 3 shouldn’t replace a varied diet. It’s specially formulated for toddler’s that may not be getting all the energy and nutrients they need from their food.

Alexander can't go anywhere without his cars and Bark the Dog. Playing cars on the driveway is hours of fun!

If you also have an active space explorer or superhero, I would recommend NAN A2 toddler milk to help them get any extra energy they might need for more amazing adventures.

As a parent, the NAN A2 Stage 3 toddler milk is so easy to prepare, and you can take it anywhere, why not on your next space exploration.

Alexander loves his NAN A2 Stage 3 Toddler Milk, he flies into space to rescue the tin.

    Bring The Drawstring Back!

This is not a new problem but one that has annoyed me for a long time.

    How about you????

Is this an issue that makes you angry?

I bet it does…. if it annoys you then I want you to get behind my movement to Bring The Drawstring Back!

As you might have guessed it really frustrates me and makes me very annoyed.

Pants and shorts that look like they have the drawstring cord but it is an illusion.  Yep all fake, nothing works. Cord and string just for show.

In fact, they just have a few bits of cord hanging to allow you to tie in a knot and not an actual bow, and due to no actual drawstring being in the waist of the pants or shorts there is no ability to pull them tighter.

You might not think this is a major issue but it is, especially when you have super skinny kids that have no waists and need everything to be tighten or taken in.

It could be a conspiracy against all people that wish to adjust their pants and not show their bums or undies.

The twins were tiny from the word go and of course have been small with everything and it is hard to get them anything that fits without getting a smaller size to ensure it actually fits around their waist. However, due to the fact that they are growing, I need the length but the waist size for bigger sizes seem to get enormous and therefore falls off my skinny little people.

When Alexander was born he was 1.2kgs bigger than one of the girls, now this is significant but he is still the same as his sisters.  Being a good size for a newborn hasn’t helped the fact that he is going to be a skinny minny like his sisters.

He has an itty bitty waist and needs to have outfits with an adjustable waist or tighter elastic or at the very least a drawstring that is there and actually works.

I’m sure I’m not the only one that is over the fake drawstring phenomenon.

    Why are manufacturers doing this?

From a customer perspective, it is horrible. You buy a pair of pants and they cannot be altered to fit you…. stupid actually!

From the seller’s position, having drawstrings mean more time to make each item and therefore each item will cost more. I’m sure they are still super cheap to make in a Chinese factory and sell for a huge profit.

Personally, I hate having no drawstrings on pants. Especially for kids, and on my PJ”s too! (I seem to have a whole bunch of pajama pants that are just falling off me and yes you guessed it, no drawstring!)

I think we should email, phone and tell all stores to put back the drawstring!  Will you stand with me?

    #bringbackthedrawstring

I did try and create a change.org petition however I couldn’t due to not knowing who to list as the person, organisation, or group that can make a decision about my petition.

Not having drawstrings is an issue that affects many shops and it is not down to one. Therefore this area of the form was left blank and I couldn’t create an online petition.

Note: I have had to change my pajama pants I was wearing during writing this as they are constantly falling down, yes its a look I just don’t want. I could magically fix all pants that do this, but why would you want to? Why can’t I just buy pants that have a usable and working drawstring?

The issue is real and affects millions of people.  Tell the clothing stores you shop at that they need to bring back the drawstring!
