Dinner at Pins on Lurline

One thing that I have missed with the lockdown restriction is eating out.

With the restrictions easing, we were lucky to experience dining at a wonderful restaurant on our wedding anniversary.

Pins at Lurline in Katoomba - Yummy food and great service
Pins at Lurline in Katoomba – Yummy food and great service

A few weeks ago we were lucky to be able to book a table at Pins on Lurline

If you have kids and wish to get your fix of some yummy fancy food, then don’t worry Pins on Lurline cater for kids too!

“At Pins believe that it is never to early to appreciate good food and we welcome well-behaved children. Our younger guests can order from our a la carte menu, we will do our best to adapt for their tastes. We reserve our earlier bookings for guests with young children.”

I know a family-friendly restaurant that can give you a stunning meal is a winner, but we did not go out with the kids and finally had an adult meal for the first time in months.

Pins on Lurline offers an intimate space for dinner

We opted for the Omnivore Tasting Menu if you are vegetarian there is a menu that you will love as well. Pins on Lurline have only two options for their menu at the moment a Tasting Menu that changes daily.

The menu works with local and fresh produce so you will always have a new and amazing food experience at Pins on Lurline.

Oh and if you are having a special celebration make sure you mention this when booking…we didn’t and only mentioned it on leaving. Executive Chef Adam Shaw will work his magic and add a special surprise for you during your dining experience.

When we entered the restaurant we were made to feel welcome and seated immediately. Due to restrictions, there were only a few tables of diners and it was a very intimate experience, so in a way perfect for an anniversary dinner.

Jody made sure we were all sorted and gave us some yummy freshly made bread and gave us our first glass of wine that will be paired with the first course (in the tasting menu we had 6 courses)

You can just have the tasting menu or have the tasting menu with the wine pairing and we did both.  I must admit due to not going anywhere for months this was a fantastic treat, and a great way to break the drought on not going to any restaurants or anywhere.

So if you are interested in costs: Tasting Menu $80, and the Wine Paring is $40

I must say after my six-course with tasty wines I was very full, I couldn’t have had sides as well. However, if you are a party of more than two people maybe a salad or some extra vegetables might be helpful.

What Did We Think?

We loved our time at Pins on Lurline from the moment we stepped inside the door. We were greeted warmly, nothing was a problem, our glasses were always topped up, any questions about the food where answered and we felt at home and comfortable.

The food was divine and was very high end. I was worried at first as the courses are smaller but with six dishes plus wines for each course you are full and there is no need to worry that you will leave hungry.

Our first journey out since lockdown was a highly successful one and it was a great place to celebrate our 16 year wedding anniversary…yes this is a long time to be married (however we’ve been together for over 20 years, just married for 16)

If you wish to go to somewhere that is impressive, has quality food and wine then Pins on Lurline is for you. Due to the restrictions on numbers, you will need to book to ensure you can get a table.

I loved my experience so much I had to share with you all and showcase a fantastic local business that is open and looking forward to seeing more people. If you are traveling or visiting the Blue Mountains make sure that you check out this amazing restaurant. You will not be disappointed.

Note: This is not a paid partnership. I live in the Blue Mountains and with the recent bushfires and now coronavirus we need to support as many local businesses to help them out.

Winter Wonderland

Today we woke to snow everywhere. Yes we were snowed in. The depth of the snow was about 15cms and 30cms in parts. Very deep for up here. The whole area has been blanketed by white bright snow. As I write this the snow is slowly melting and we are all enjoying a hot cuppa, well the kids are having a hot Milo.

School was closed, the roads were closed and we could not go anywhere. Hubby could not get to work and was able to enjoy the snow day with all of us. Most times when it snows he misses out so it is finally nice to the whole family home on this occasion.

I know this might be cold for most of you but the temperature has just hit 2 degrees so it is slowly getting warmer (well it was when I started writing this post at about 2ish this afternoon). I did see a big black cloud on our walk with the neighbours to the local oval and was told that we might get some rain this afternoon/evening.

I do like the snow but due needing to pick up tiles in Penrith tomorrow having it melt might allow the roads to be reopened and for us to get them. We were lucky and the roads opened up late this afternoon and we managed to pick up the tiles so no need to worry.

After we got home from getting the tiles, Hubby helped the kids build a second snowman. Hope it is there still in the morning.

I must say today was a magical adventure and it was lovely that we could all be here to witness the snow and be involved with it. It was also nice that the kids and hubby were not at school or work and we all had a great day together.

Did it snow at your place? I heard it snowed in Queensland as well. Apparently this is the biggest fall of snow we have had since 1984. Yes, amazing isn’t it!

Let us know if you had a snow day today.

Active Mother’s Day

Today was Mother’s Day and I’m sure you called your mum, did family things with the kids and spoilt the wife, and just had a great day. We did a bit of this. I had a very early wake-up call due to one kid wanting to help finding some My Little Pony toys. She even tried to wake me up by waving a crystal above my head, thank goodness it did not hit me.

I eventually got up and got the kids breakfast. Hubby then woke up and I got to open my gifts that I have been curious about for a few days now. One gift in particular I told hubby I wanted so Julia and Daddy went off to the post office to secure the book I wanted. The rest of the gifts were things that the kids purchased from the Mother’s Day stall at school, and hubby got some things at the shops the other day.

My Mother's Day Gifts - I wonder what the kids got me?
My Mother’s Day Gifts – I wonder what the kids got me?

So for the curious, I got the following for my pressies:

  • 2 lots of sunflower seeds from the girls
  • 1 magnet meal planner for the fridge from the girls
  • 1 book about all things to know about sewing. This book tells you how to do all things you have said, “I wonder how you do that?” Now I will know and have the book to tell me. Yes, I am armed with the info I need. Now I just need to magically find the time and space to do what I want and all will be right with the world.
  • PJs from hubby (very happy with this as I needed some new ones)

After the grand opening of my amazing gifts and putting a movie on for the kids, hubby got busy making me and his breakfast. Well, mine was breakfast in bed to be precise.  So what did he cook me?

Hubby made me Sticky Apple Pancakes and that’s not all, he made them all heart-shaped for me. Yes that is amazing don’t you think! Thanks to IGA for sending me such a lovely gift box for Mother’s Day.

Ingredients ready to make Sticky Apple Pancakes - All from IGA

Ingredients:

  • 40g unsalted butter, cubed
  • 2 pink lady apples, cut into thin slices
  • 40g sultanas
  • ½ cup maple syrup
  • 375g Greens Original Pancake Shake

Method:

  1. Melt the butter in a non-stick frying pan over medium-low heat.
  2. Add apples and cook for 5 minutes then add sultanas, maple syrup and 1/3 cup water. Simmer for 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally until the apples are translucent and the sauce has reduced and thickened. Remove from heat, cover and keep warm.
  3. While apple compote is cooking, prepare the Green’s Pancake Shake according to packet instructions. Cook pancakes as directed.
  4. Spoon the apple and sultana compote over the pancakes and serve immediately.

After we had our yummy breakfast, we got all rugged up and headed out to see the sculptures at Scenic World. It was a very cold day and we have had over 70km wind gusts so about 5 layers helped me feel warm.

We all walked over 4km, went on the railway, cableway, the skyway and the walkways. No wonder I am so tired.

What did you end up doing for Mother’s Day? Did you stay in due to it being freezing? Or venture out with the family? I was lucky we got to see the sculptures as today was the last day they were on. Some were very interesting and others were rather odd and morbid. We all had a great day and it was nice to be out and about. Getting some exercise was a good thing for everyone to be doing, we all walked a lot today.

I hope you had a great Mother’s Day.

If you wish to cook this yummy recipe that hubby made for breakfast or something different, you can visit the IGA Recipes for more inspiration.

Thanks again to IGA for my fab Mother’s Day gift box it was yummy and made my day!

Observed Bush Fire Damage

The view on our walk to Anvil Rock
The view on our walk to Anvil Rock

Yesterday the family and I took a drive. We continued along Hat Hill Road at Blackheath and just wondered where certain roads went. We ended up at Anvil Rock and did the bush walk.

During the drive we noticed the amount of trees that had burnt in the bush fires. For a long time the fire did not cross the road and that seemed like ages, however there was a point where it did and we looked at the devastation and just though how horrific it would have been.

Once we were up on the rock we had a great view and were able to see the trees that had burnt and others that were lucky to still be green. Although there was kilometre after kilometre of burnt trees in the middle of the ash and charcoal there was green growth sprouting.

It is another thing to be told about the fire and another thing entirely too actually see what it did to the land. It was shocking. Have you had a moment when you are faced with something like this, you hear about an event but have not seen the result of it in the flesh? How did it change you when you were face to face with the impact of a disaster? I was in tears at one point as it really brought home how close it really was. One change of the wind and it would have headed our way.

We were very lucky indeed. The firefighters did a tough job and I and the community are extremely grateful for their long hours and hard work.

I’m not sure what the count on land that got burnt, but the community is all o.k. No lives were lost and that is great news. Not great I know if you lost your house, and I think that would be tragic and I would be very upset if that had happened. I feel for people in this situation.

Contrary to public opinion The Blue Mountains is open and ready for business. Nearly all areas are green and have wonderful views and you would never know that we had a bush fire. We just saw an area that got affected yesterday. If you are wanting to get away from it all, don’t think that there is damage everywhere, all is fine.  Pack your bags and take your holiday, long weekend or conference here.  The Blue Mountains is a great place to be and to visit.

Voluntary Evacuation

Note: We have now since returned home, and did so on the 24th of Oct. House is fine, no sign of fire and we are all safe. I thank you all for checking up on me and my family and for following us in this stressful situation. Love to you all.

Today is the day fire fighters have predicted will be hell. Extreme weather was predicted for the Blue Mountains. Forecasters said we would have a hot day, with 40-50km winds with 80-100km wind gusts. Not good as this is no help putting out the fires. At 6am this morning the wind gusts were over 70km per hour and had knocked me over a couple of times while packing up.

We did have some rain yesterday but it was not enough and did not help the effort to rid us all of the fires. More rain was to come after 11pm last night. A thunderstorm was here, will it give us more rain? No! It lasted 15mins and then ended. Oh well I think I thought the idea of pouring rain might happen, but the weather experts said no. I was hoping they were wrong. Not to be.

Before the thunderstorm I attended the Katoomba community meeting about the fires, and was captured on television looking a bit vague and out of it. If you did see me I was looking at the big screen and concentrating on the person speaking. The meeting did not really help me much as the fire fighters cannot tell if there will be a fire where you are, it might happen or it could not. It really depends on the weather. Luck of the gods type thing.

So no answers here… The 2nd in charge of Katoomba/Leura Brigade asked the group several questions:

If you stayed would you be able to do the following?

  • If an ember was in your roof, would you be able to climb up in the roof and put it out?
  • Would you be able to defend your property?
  • Would you cope with 35 plus degree heat, and having to wear heavy clothing to protect yourself from the fire? (The firefighters said that if you pant while jogging in 35 degree heat with full clothes on, you will not cope)
  • Could you put all embers out on walls, windows, roof, and elsewhere?
  • Would you be able to risk your loved ones and yourself to protect your house?

One question I thought of is, “How do I defend the house while looking after two kids?” “How do I manage to do things on my own?” My hubby is in Brisbane on business and my house guest will be at work. So it will just be me and the kids.

I answered no to a lot of these questions. So I thought my decision was made. We will leave the house and make our way down the mountain. I was packing things since Monday but thought it might not eventuate in leaving.

I got up early and the kids and I hit the road and went to a relatives for a couple of nights. I am glad we are safe and we made the decision. As I write this Springwood and Faulconbridge have been emergency warnings and I think they have been asked to evacuate.

Me and the girls leaving the house. Car packed up and ready to leave.
Me and the girls leaving the house. Car packed up and ready to leave.

Some articles from the Herald:

This time last year. 12th of October 2012
This time last year. 12th of October 2012

I was amazed at how easy it is to realise what items are more important than others. What was the criteria to come in the car? Well things that we needed and could not live without and things that cannot be replaced. Most of the items were documents, photos and things that the kids have done in their five years on this planet. I packed their stuff that I got from hospital when I had them, and also made sure that we had birth certificates and the like. The other major thing that we packed in the car was ourselves.

The kids and I are now waiting for dinner and they are giggling in their pre dinner bath. I am tired and have a headache but think that is due to the extra stress and long day.

Have you had to pack up in an emergency? What did you take with you? Did you find it a bit stressful leaving? I did have a bit of a cry on the M4 at one stage but snapped out of it for the good of the kids.

Possible Evacuation

Note: As of the 22nd of Oct we are all still safe and fine at the house. Weather conditions might and have been expected to change for the worse tomorrow. If we have to leave I have packed a bag and things that we cannot replace, and it is ready to go in the car. Kids are at pre-school as it appears o.k and if needed will go and get them. Thanks for your concerns. Stay safe if you are in the same or worse situation.

Hi All,

If the weather changes I could be off line for a few days. We might have to evacuate as we live in the Blue Mountains, NSW Australia and we are having extreme bushfires. Maybe your local news is covering this story if you are overseas.

According to the Sydney Morning Herald if the wind changes it might be a disaster. Let hope it’s not.  I did pop out to the airfield as we are friends and supporters of the airfield but also to give morning tea to the firefighters. I visited the Hominy Bakery in Katoomba and they were nice to give me a free cake for the firefighers. Thanks so much to the Hominy Bakery and everyone go and say thanks and give them your business.

Stay safe everyone else that is affected, crossing fingers and toes that I don’t have to leave. I am busy packing bags and making sure the twins and I are orgnaisd if we have to race off. It is amazing what you realise that you can live without in an emergency.

Hope you enjoyed looking at the lovely helicopters and some people that are helping us remain safe and well.

Mountains V’s Beach. Which is best?

I grew up in North Queensland, Hervey Bay to be precise. My childhood consisted of playing outdoors, cycling on my push bike, swimming, snorkelling and outdoor activities.

Summer is my favourite season and I adore the heat, so why do I now live in Katoomba in the Blue Mountains? Where most of the time it is wet, freezing, cold, gale force winds and just miserable. There is a small window where it nice; warm or hot that you could think it was summer but for me it never lasts long enough; and sometimes we never get a summer and it feels like it is constantly winter!

Katoomba in Winter.
Katoomba in Winter.

I have been in the Blue Mountains for over ten years now and has the environment rubbed off on me? Do I still yearn for the beach, the sun and the all round great weather?

Well the answer is Yes, I still long for the beach and all that goes with it. You cannot change how you grew up and what you long for.

I’m sure that you think that the mountains cannot be so bad. It does have some great things going for it:

  • Great air to breathe.
  • Outdoor spaces to play in and to use. Walks, climbing and parks.
  • You can see stars that you will not see in the city or in built up areas.
  • Greater value for houses and real estate, allows you to get a foot hold in the property market.
  • Live closer to nature. Surrounded by national parks and nature.
  • Experience four seasons and sometimes just one. In October 2012 we had deep snow and it was freezing (see image gallery below). It did not snow in winter but waited till Spring to do this.
  • Cooler in summer compared to the city. This is great if you like the heat but don’t to get too hot.
  • Feels like we live in tourist central, this gives us more choice and infrastructure to our area.

One of the main reasons that I am in the Blue Mountains is due to my hubby. He cannot stand the heat and deals with the cold better. So I love the heat and I hate the cold. In summer in Katoomba the temperature is warm and sometimes hot but not as bad as it would be in the city. This is a good compromise, however I wish it would work better for me in winter.

I brave the freezing cold for my hubby, how nice of me. What have you done for your partner?

What is so wonderful about the beach and warmer weather?

  • Better climate to allow more activities to happen year round rather than just certain times of the year.
  • Makes me feel great and energised.
  • Love the salt water.
  • Love the smell of the sand, sea and the idea that the days seem endless.
  • Due to better climate more outdoor activity can be had.

As I write this I am in my hotel room on the Gold Coast. It has been a lovely hot day and just enjoyable weather. I can smell the sea air and it just makes me feel good. Feels like home. I am pleased that I am getting my fix for what I long for, and hope that I can repeat it soon.

The mountains has great qualities also, the fog that makes it so appealing. The trees that change colour in autumn and look so pretty in their reds, browns, and yellows. I know the whole dynamic of the Blue Mountains would change if it was constantly warm and sunny. There would be no curling up in front of the open fire and snuggling with your hot chocolate or skinny cap or maybe a glass of port.

Mind you I do like these things in the mountains, but I hate the cold, and cannot stand dealing with the layers of clothes that is needed to stay warm.

I  have decided that I don’t like winter and never will. I love and hang out for summer, summer holidays, Christmas and spending time at the beach, pool and just being outdoors.

What are your thoughts? What is wonderful about the mountains or the beach? What is your favourite?

Mountains V's Beach.

Snow Fun

Snow Bunnies
Snow Bunnies

Today we had the heaviest snow in over 10 years some have said. I have lived in Katoomba for over 10 years now and have not had this happen so it must be right. It was a magical day. Kids loved it, played outside and had their first chance to build a snowman. I have seen another snowman around the corner from our house so kids must have been busy building snowmen everywhere.

Check out a video of the snow falling.

It was great that the twins got the opportunity to play in snow and experience it. The joy on the girls faces was priceless and a joy to see. It is a pity that hubby was stuck at work and missed this experience with the kids and for himself. We have been waiting for the day it snows and it covers everything. It did and he was at work. The only negative is that the roads were closed and he might not have been able to come home, although they have just reopened so I hope he is able to get home safely. On the mountain we have one road in and one road out, so if they are closed, not much you can do about that. Wait or visit a friend/relative I suppose.

Check out some of the fun that we had today. The girls did snow angels and had a blast. Both girls as I mentioned before desperately wanted to build a snowman and we did. The snow was so deep that we had enough to throw snow balls, and build things. How wonderful to finally tell them they can build a snowman, the last time it snowed it just melted and it did not last so no snowman to build then.

Has the weather been strange where you are? It has today, it is Spring and we had all this snow and it is so cold as you can imagine. First day at Pre-School

Julia and Lillian - First Day of Pre-School
Julia and Lillian - First Day of Pre-School

The first day at pre-school went really well, although the girls were  bit shy when we got there, hearing about the slippery dip made the girls skip and run out to play without a thought to us.  We then made our leave quickly.  I was a bit sad but also happy that they are at this stage to go to school to learn more. I am also to even happier to getting some time off without the kids, it is a god sent.

This morning it was blue skies, sun and wonderful summer heat. This nice weather was a false alarm and was about to change to our big surprise. We ended up having a huge thunder storm that drenched us in so much water and hail. It was just so intense. The storm lasted over an hour and it seemed to be getting heavier and harder throughout the storm. James was home as he wanted to be here for the girls first day of pre-school was helping me run around the house to see if we were really water tight, and all was o.k. We seemed o.k, but we just watched in amazement at how the hail was failing and how quickly the water was flowing down the street and our driveway.

People here have put out their junk for council clean up and a chair opposite was floating down the street. We cringed as we both thought that it was going to slide into on coming traffic. This was not something we could witness, however it was what we imagined might happen. Also would the driver or the onlooker think, where did the person of the chair go?

Just to give you an idea of how intense the storm was, here are some articles of what happened today. The sports centre in Katoomba has had roof damage and water damage, other stores and houses have damage as well, “Patrons evacuated after roof collapse“, “Thunderstorms hit Blue Mountains“,  and “Blue Mountains lashed by heavy hail“.

I was thinking of how the girls were doing all day, and also thinking of what I could get done in the time I had to myself. I must say. Not much got done. I tidied the kitchen but now it is a mess again, so will do it again tomorrow. I managed to put fresh sheets on all beds, so that is a good thing and nice. However there are a lot more things to do. The plan is to get the place in order to allow myself to do what I want to do with the days the girls are at pre-school. This running around like a mad woman all days that I have off is not going to happen this year. I promise myself I will try and get organised to get things done. I know easier said than done. It will get better once I get some time to get rooms done and sorted. This way it will feel like things are actually happening and there is actual action. Although I do, do things, after cleaning, tidying, playing with kids and then looking at the house, you think it is in the same or worse state than before. I am sure you have all been there.

Daddy's necklace by Lillian
Daddy's necklace by Lillian

Oh well, after the storm and the darkness went more sunshine came out. Cruel weather, just after I had taken all the clothes off the line, yet again. This change was most welcome as we had to go and collect the girls. We made it and were in fact early, which was nice. We waited with the other parents for the doors to open at the end of class. Once the doors opened, the girls saw daddy and I waiting for them. They yelled,”Daddy” and raced over to hug him. He was then told by Lillian that she had made a necklace for him and he must wear it. She was trying to find it in the cardboard folder that had her name on it. All the kids have one and they are stored at the front of the school so that parents can see what the child has been doing and take artwork home but leave the folder at the school. I opened the folder to find that the teacher had put the necklace in her folder. Julia told me that she did not make one. Lillian then put it on daddy. He wore it for the rest of the day.

The girls told us that they painted, played on the slippery dip and slid down on their bellies, met a girl called Mia, and had a great day, and of course Lillian made daddy a necklace, it is a pasta necklace with the end being a pasta whistle. All very clever, and all her design she told me.

Both girls are looking forward to going back tomorrow and I am pleased that they had such a great time and want to go back. Now tomorrow will be action day for me and so will Wednesday. At least it will be well spent organising. I did want to go to aqua aerobics on Wednesday but that is at the aquatic centre that has roof damage from today’s storm, so I guess that is off limits until fixed.  Now off to organise the girls lunch boxes for tomorrow.

How do you manage the time when you child is in care/school do you run around like a mad person trying to get all things done? Is it something that you cherish and the hell with housework? Do you make a comprise and do one room and then give yourself a break? Any ideas or techniques please send my way. This way we can all learn and help each other.
