Man vs Bee: 13 Reasons Why Trevor should never house sit

“A man finds himself at war with a bee while house sitting a luxurious mansion. Who will win, and what irreparable damage will be done in the process?” IMDB.com

I recently watched Man vs Bee on Netflix and to say it stressed me out is an understatement. I got very uneasy and was shouting at the TV when disaster was going to strike and as you can imagine inevitably it did. As a person who never likes to see damage happen, I found it hard when priceless items were destroyed….all to rid the house of one bee!

However it was like wanting to know what happened in a disaster, I had to find out what happened, was Trevor going to triumph over the bee? Or will the bee get his revenge to Trevor’s demise?

What is Man vs Bee About?

“Man vs. Bee is a 2022 British comedy created and written by Rowan Atkinson and William Davies. The show consists of nine episodes, each of them directed by David Kerr. Atkinson stars as a down-on-his-luck man who finds himself entrenched in a battle with a bee while house-sitting a rich couple’s modern mansion. Jing Lusi, Claudie Blakley, Tom Basden, Julian Rhind-Tutt, Greg McHugh, and India Fowler also feature. Man vs. Bee premiered on Netflix on 24 June 2022 and received mixed reviews from critics.” Wikipedia

Rowan Atkinson is Trevor Bingley who is obsessed with removing a bee from a mansion that is filled with expensive everything; statues, artwork, clothes, cars, books, and more.

13 reasons why Trevor should never house sit

  1. Breaks priceless statue
When Trevor first arrives at the house he walks around admiring all the art and objects. You slowly realise that there are a lot of very expensive and priceless objects. He turns around and bumps a statue off a table. Trevor tries to remember how to open the kitchen cabinets from the information shared by Nina and Christian the homeowners but is finding it difficult, as he is looking for glue to fix the broken statue. Trevor finally finds super glue and fixes the broken statue by glueing the broken part back on. However, this scene has been found to have a continuity error. “One viewer couldn’t help but notice the moment during the first episode when the head of a broken statue hilariously flies across the room after Trevor tries to speedily glue it back together and dry it with a hairdryer. However, in the next shot, as Trevor looks on horrified, the head inexplicably appears back attached to the main body of the statue.Hello Magazine

  1. Burns manual to house
When Trevor met Nina and Christian they explained that the house has a manual, all that he will need to know is in this manual. The manual also had codes to unlock doors and other such items, if Trevor doesn’t have these codes the only way to open doors is using Nina’s voice as it is voice activated. Trevor put the manual on the induction stove top, he thought that he had turned on one area of the stove for a saucepan to heat up some food but had actually turned on the back part of the stove that the manual was sitting on and therefore set it alight. As you might guess the food never cooked or heated up and Trevor was not sure why it wasn’t working.

  1. Locks Cupcake the dog in the library
Cupcake the much-loved dog of Nina and Christian is not allowed in the library. The library is the home of some very rare books and one, in particular, is a manuscript that is on display on a platform that is carefully lit. Trevor was given explicit instructions to make sure that the dog was never allowed in and in his panic to try and rid the living area of the bee didn’t realise that Cupcake snuck inside while Trevor was distracted making it easy for the door to lock after him. Trevor remembers that the codes were to do with famous naval battles and magically remembers what the code is but then the door will not open unless he sounds like Nina, so Trevor spends time perfecting his female Nina-like voice to open the library door.
  1. Cupcake destroys priceless manuscript
While Cupcake is trapped in the library she destroys the priceless antique manuscript that the homeowners were protecting and valued. It is torn to shreds and as you can imagine the rest of the library is a mess too.

  1. Ruins a Kandinsky sculpture
Trevor breaks parts of the Kandinsky sculpture and works hard to fix it. He replaces the artwork with a metal hand beater and other things to make it appear like it was before it was broken.
  1. Rips a Mondrian painting
Trevor accidentally rips the painting by using a hammer to try and open the door to the library that is locked. He attempts to break the glass on the library door and then the hammer slips out of his hand and flies backwards to then slide and rip down the expensive painting. Trevor fixes this issue with tape and colouring it to appear like the red on the painting. At one point the tape falls down to show that there indeed has been damaged and that it is not perfect.

  1. Makes cupcake the dog sick
Trevor has been warned that Cupcake cannot eat peanut butter, if she eats it she has diarrhoea and farts a lot…and as you can imagine it was not good and very stinky. Due to Cupcake having an upset belly and doing terrible poos inside it affects Trevor when he crawls back inside the house with Cupcake’s collar that opens automatically the dog door. Trevor accesses the house with the dog door due to locking himself outside of the house and then lands right into the dog poo.
Cupcake eats peanut butter and then gets very sick
  1. Wears the furs of the homeowners while covered in dog poo
Trevor is covered in dog poo when there is a police officer at the door. He doesn’t know what to do as he is not dressed adequately, he panics and finds a fur coat to wear when he answers the door, he is also still wearing the dog collar. While speaking with the police officer the officer finds that Trevor is rather smelly and finds his outfit rather troubling. The police officer is letting homeowners know that there is a band of burglars that are breaking into houses and to be aware.

  1. Posions Cupcake the dog
In an effort to rid the house of the pesky bee, Trevor traps it in the pantry and then has a poisonous bomb of cleaning chemicals. To lure the bee into the pantry Trevor put peanut butter on a knife and left it in the pantry with the door open, this then also lured in Cupcake the dog. Trevor thought it was just the bee and shut the door trapping Cupcake in the pantry when he let off the chemicals. House sitters are trusted to look after animals, not kill them or try to…well you hope this never happens.
Freaking out after he nearly kills Cupcake the dog
  1. Torches the house
In one last-ditch effort to rid the bee from the house and away from Trevor he torches the house. As you might imagine this caused terrible damage and burnt the house too. Torching houses of course is not what a housesitter should do and one that you would think that a bee would not survive, but this bee is rather clever and cunning…. Yes maybe the bee has a cunning plan Trevor

  1. Damages a priceless E-type Jaguar
After nearly killing Cupcake the dog Trevor needs to get her to the vet. Trevor decides to drive the very rare and super expensive E-Type Jaguar to get much-needed medical help for cupcake. On the way to the vet he damages the car, to make sure he had all the broken bits he made sure to put them in the car and magically made it to the vet, and spoiler alert….Cupcake was okay.
  1. Bombs the house
Trevor is so over this bee and is dead set on wanting to get rid of it for good. He believes he has captured it and then devises a bomb to kill it for good. He lets off the bomb in the garden but it impacts the house and also the car too.
  1. Unknowingly let burglars into the house
Trevor had no idea that he let the burglars into the house. The team of men were locked in the house and was in the process of robbing the house of Nina and Christian’s valuables. As a house sitter, you should really know if you have burglars in the house and poor Trevor had no idea.

What did I think of Man vs Bee?

I found the show reminiscent of Mr Bean but the character of Trevor was different. Trevor was more caring and human and Mr Bean is rather selfish in his behavoiur. The drama that Trevor got into as a result of a bee was horrible and there was so much destruction. I found myself yelling at the television about certain things, and telling Trevor loudly, “NO don’t do that!!!!” “Oh NO!”

The show has very short episodes and some by the time you start have ended, so it is very easy to watch the whole season in one go. I did find myself annoyed at all the destruction and rather upset about it but had to watch it to the end. Some things were very funny and others I found rather troublesome. I wasn’t a fan of showing how to poison a bee or kill a bee as they are needed for our survival. Bees pollinate our food and help everyone. However, I know the bee was used as a demonstration of something that plagued Trevor, leading to him not letting go and focusing on that above anything else.

I am not sure that Man vs Bee is for everyone. If you were like me you might get upset with all the destruction and be too stressed out to watch more.

The Queen’s Gambit

I don’t know if I’m late to the party but I just recently finished watching the Netflix series “The Queen’s Gambit”

I was tempted to start watching by myself but decided to include hubby in my tv watching decision. I must say that we both loved it and consumed the episodes at great speed.

Netflix poster for The Queen’s Gambit

So what is The Queen’s Gambit About?

The show is based on Walter Trevis’s 1983 novel called, The Queen’s Gambit.

It is about a girl called, Beth Harmon who gets orphaned after a car accident kills her mum. The show starts in the 1950s and progresses through the 1960s.

After Beth is orphaned she is taken to an orphanage for girls. She is then introduced to chess from the building custodian, Mr Shaibel. While at the orphanage she is exposed to taking daily tranquillizers as this is a way the home keeps the children under control. Due to taking these pills daily, Beth grew to rely on them.

Mr Shaibel teaching a young Beth Harmon to play chess

Beth sneaks downstairs to have secret chess lessons from Mr Shaibel and it is slowly revealed that she is a chess prodigy. Mr Shaibel introduces Beth to a contact at the local high school that has a chess group so that Beth can learn more and be exposed with other fellow chess players.

Beth enters chess tournaments and gets better and better. It is interesting to watch how Beth grows up as a young woman and becomes her own person rather than relying on a mother figure or another adult.

Also, I was taken with the 1960’s fashion and furnishings. Just loved this part of the show too.

I loved this show, it was fun, griping and a good drama.

Many of my friends have raved about this series and I thought I will get to it one day. If you have heard good things about this show I would urge you to give it a go.

We have loved having Netflix and it has been godsent with lockdowns and not being able to travel or go anywhere in 2020 and also in 2021.

Send some more suggestions for more shows that I can binge watch.

That’s for Babies Mummy!

As you all might know we have a new TV and now we have fixed the issue of not getting free to air television. For a long time we have not been able to watch shows like the news, or say the ABC. It has been very annoying indeed. A couple of weekends ago I was out and hubby organised some people to come and look at the antenna to determine what the issue was.

The aerial was okay, the transmitter was okay however the cable connecting it all was not. The cockatoos had eaten through the cable and it all had to be replaced. Once the new cable was installed, we got free to air television. At last, a connection with the world. News, shows, and all sorts of things! Yippee!

Now I can bore the kids with the news when they don’t want to go to bed.

Watching cartoons
Watching cartoons

The twins have now figured out how to put the TV on, and they know how to put the station onto ABC3. I asked what about ABC2 but they told me that is for babies mummy!

Now this is one clue that they are growing up. The cartoons and content on ABC3 is a little bit more grown up but still for kids. ABC2 is for a younger audience. Although they still watch some shows on ABC2 , they are now totally obsessed with ABC3. They don’t want to watch anything else, unless it is the end of children’s programming and they might watch or do something else.

What has your child or children done or said that made you think gosh they are growing up? Let us know.

Our New TV

Yesterday our new TV arrived. We were all very excited. It arrived in a very very BIG box. I am sure it was not that big? Did I just forget what the size actually was? I’m sure it is just the box and it has padding. The HUGE box worried me. I was not sure we could fit it in the room.

Our old TV died a long time ago and before it finally gave up its last show it was flickering and just not looking well.

When it finally went to black we had to have a replacement. We used one of my computer monitors. Yes we went from a HUGE screen to a tiny one. Hubby and I took it carefully out of the box and thank goodness, it is smaller than the box!

We finally have a new television. Now we need to figure out how to work it.
We finally have a new television. Now we need to figure out how to work it.

Well it would not have been tiny when I was a kid, it would have been huge, however since we were all used to something enormous it was weird to suddenly have a smaller screen. The kids were shocked when we produced the monitor for a stand in until we replaced the television. I could not understand why they were so upset, but then I figured it out. They had never known a smaller screen.

Now we have the reverse happening. The new telly is 3 inches bigger than the old one. We have decided to rearrange the living room a bit for a change and to create more space. Now every time I walk past and see the TV it is MASSIVE! JUST HUGE! It will take me some time to get used to it.

Has this happened to you?

When we purchased the TV we went to look at all different makes and models. There was one that was GIGANTIC! It would have taken an entire wall to put it on. To have this telly you would have to have a very big house as well. We got one that was still big but not something we cannot fit in our house.

Plus the GIGANTIC telly cost nearly $12,000 so that is not the price we wanted to spend on a television.

I am very happy that we finally have a new TV but since it is new we have not figured out all whiz bang things that it comes with.  It will take us some time to learn what buttons to press, and what to do with it. I managed to watch Clarke and Dawe and Portlandia on ABC’s iView today so that is something.

Before I pick kids up from school I need to get some cables that will hopefully allow me to watch free to air television again. I have not been able to watch regular telly for a long while now. It stopped working and we think it might have had something to so with the old telly not working and communicating with the aerial. I hope this is the case. If not it is an aerial issue. Hubby did look on the roof and thinks all looks good.

Fingers crossed that the magic cables I buy make the television all work.

Appliance Failures – Why All At Once?

Today we are staying home. I do like staying home, especially in school holidays. However when you need to stay home to wait for a delivery it can get quite frustrating. Frustrating due to not knowing when your delivery will arrive.

The delivery driver called earlier to say they will be here in the afternoon, so I have an idea. I just hope that they get here before 4pm so I can go to an appointment. Yes I had to make an appointment this afternoon as I could not get in any other time. Annoying really.

Why is it that due to having to be home all day you can think of a million and one things you would rather be doing, and they are of course not at home or waiting for my delivery!

I hear you ask, “What am I waiting for?”  Well it is a much needed clothes dryer.

No more waiting for sunshine. A dryer will mean I can dry my clothes when it is wet and stormy! Cannot wait.
No more waiting for sunshine. A dryer will mean I can dry my clothes when it is wet and stormy! Cannot wait.

Mine decided to die and I have been making do with hanging clothes everywhere inside the house and on the line. However this falls down when you have days and days of non-stop rain! As you can imagine living in the Blue Mountains having a dryer is a necessity not a want or item that you can say no to. Without one most of the clothes generally don’t dry due to wet and very cold days.

I am very excited to be getting a new dryer and happy that I can finally have items dried when I want them to be.   I am getting sick of living in a house that looks more like a laundry or a very messy clothes shop!

My new dryer is smart. It can sense how long to dry clothes for, and will not run for hours and hours if it is just a pair of jeans, or some towels that need to be dry. How clever is this! Keen to try out this fab feature.

So I am very happy that my dryer is on its way, but I hate waiting nearly all day to get it. Do you have days like this? Waiting for a delivery. I must say it is not all bad. I am doing some housework, responding to emails, and kids are happy playing outside as it is finally sunny again.

Now that I finally get a replacement dryer I bet that the weather will be super sunny and no more rain. What do you think?

Today might not be the only day waiting to get a replacement item. Our television has also died and we are using a computer screen monitor in place of a large screen TV. The twins were rather shocked as it is very small compared to the BIG Plasma screen we previously had. Hubby and I explained that this is not bad and it was the same size that we had before the big screens. This was met with dismay and annoyance from the kids (I see you are shocked at this – it did make us laugh). The twins have never known a small T.V. and have only had the large flat screens. It was interesting seeing their reaction to this change.

Oh and I forgot to mention that our toaster also decided it did not want to work anymore and the kettle fell to bits! I think the white-goods and electrical items at our house are giving up! Maybe they are on strike! Should I hold a meeting and see if I can negotiate a better deal so they keep working and we don’t have to spend money on replacements? I wonder?

It has been four items in quick succession that have stopped working or had a failure:

  • Television
  • Dryer
  • Toaster
  • Kettle (this just fell to bits. The handle and the wiring just perished) We noticed this one last, but the first 3 were right after each other.

While we ponder what television to purchase next we will use our computer monitor as it is serving the purpose for now.

Are you going through a stage where your white goods are on their way out? Have you had a string of things die and need to be replaced? Let us know.

Let us know your thoughts. Why not continue the discussion on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

Timeless Basil Fawlty

Still funny, Fawlty Towers.
Still funny, Fawlty Towers.

I’m sure I am not alone, getting sick of watching the same kids programs over and over again. Not other SpongeBob Square Pants, Octonauts or Peppa Pig! Please can we watch something different? Movies are stuck on the same one currently, “The Little Mermaid” Ohhhhhhhh it is hard to keep up the enthusiasm for the same show that you have seen a million and one times! Trust me it feels like this is the amount I have sat there. Insert fake smile to child here! Of course I would love to watch Peppa Pig again, Yes after that we can have a SpongeBob Square Pants.

So I decided to see if there was an old show that I like, that would be kid appropriate. I decided on Fawlty Towers. Not sure if the kids would think it funny, but I loved it as a kid as John Cleese, Connie Booth, Prunella Scales and Andrew Sachs made the characters fun, made me laugh and love them.

Fawlty Towers for those that don’t know is about a couple that run a hotel in Torquay, England.  Basil and Sybil Fawlty own and run the hotel with help from Polly and Manuel. Sybil manages to find ways to avoid work while ordering Basil around. He is a rude man that gets annoyed, angry and yells at customers of the hotel. Mr Fawlty also ends up running around in a flap trying to please the Mrs with jobs that he is supposed to have done but never gets around to, or ignores, or runs out of time due to issues with customers or the hotel.

There are many episodes where Basil loses his cool and has a temper tantrum. However it is never bad to watch, more slap stick in origin and hard to watch without laughing yourself silly and bringing tears to your eyes. Hubby and I have been in a fit of giggles that were uncontrollable and just could not stop! The show although obviously shot in the 1970’s has not lost the edge it had then, the episodes still hold up in 2013 and are just as hysterical now as they were then. Well that is my opinion.

Now you might think that this show might not be entertaining for four year olds (this was the age that I started them watching it), and now five year olds, but you are very wrong! They love it and ask repeatedly for us to put one of the episodes on, their favourite “The Wedding Party”.

While we were away we had episodes copied to our laptop for the girls to watch before bed, they giggled their heads off and so did we. Also when we were at a winery they were playing with a toy phone, and asking for Mr Fawlty. I overheard this and could not stop laughing. This has happened the local doctors, both kids were pretending they were the Fawlty’s, one was Basil and the other was Sybil. Interesting.

Now the kids ask to watch “the angry man who jumps up and down in the office” this is how they refer to Basil Fawlty. Weird how they have taken to it and glad that it now breaks up their shows with something that mummy and daddy love to watch also.

How many times do you think you have watched some of your kids shows? Is it a trillion or more? Let me know.  What show from your childhood have you introduced and they love also? The girls also love “The Muppet Show” so that is great.  Send in your comments.
