The kids have been excited about Halloween due to all the stuff at the shops. Previous years they were not that much into it, although any excuse to get lollies, right? When we were at Woolworths they were selling pumpkins and had instructions on how to create your own pumpkin jack-o’-lantern. I had never done before and was not sure how to even attempt it. The girls wanted to do one and I thought why not. They were cheap, only a couple of dollars so well worth a go and not going to break the bank. I followed the instructions as were listed.
I cut little cuts on the top of the pumpkin to take the top of, after a while the top came off cleanly.
Once the top was off I was then able to clean out the body of the pumpkin and there was a lot of muck and seeds, as you might imagine.
When the inside was clean enough I started on the eyes and mouth of the jack-o’-lantern.
The instructions said to trace the eyes and mouth onto the pumpkin, I found that hard. Maybe if you want to do this get some sticky tape and make sure the sheet with the instructions is fixed in place. I ended up getting a marker and drawing mine on while looking at the instructions to get a guide for the shapes.
I then did little cuts for the eyes and mouth until the bits came out and then I cleaned it up.
I dried it out a bit by the heat of the oven and then it was o.k to put a candle in it.
Why not give it a go yourself. This is my first try at it and I think it has worked very well. Now I’m a pumpkin jack-o’-lantern expert. I will be holding classes soon on the subject! Note that the mouth has some teeth on the top and the right and none on the left. It was meant to show that this Jack character has been evil and in fights, so has lost his teeth! What a wicked Jack this one is!
Have you created your own jack-o’-lantern for Halloween? Or does someone else do it for you? I was frightened of it but now I am a pro! Let me know how you have gone if you are busy carving your own.

As you might be aware NSW (New South Wales) is suffering major bushfires. These fires have claimed property and lives. It is so sad that people have lost everything and some families are morning the loss of a loved one.
Today the family and I went to Woolworths to buy some groceries, when paying our bill at the check out we found out that we can donate to The Salvation Army’s Bushfire Relief Appeal. We donated $50 to the cause and then Woolworths will add another $50 on top of that. So in total $100 will be donated.
According to Woolworths:
“The Salvos are already on the ground providing relief to bushfire affected communities across the State and today we’re asking our customers to join us and help their work by adding a donation at the checkout of any store.
“Making a donation at your local Woolies is the easiest way to help. Simply ask a Woolworths team member to add a donation to your purchase, select the donation button at the self-serve checkout, or make a donation at woolworthsonline.com.au.
“Woolworths will match any customer donations dollar-for-dollar for the next two weeks,” said Eales (The NSW State Manager for Woolworths). If, for example, a customer adds a $10 donation to their grocery bill, Woolies will match it leading to a total donation of $20 to the Salvos.
More smoke from the fires
What can you do to help?
Please go along to Woolworths or go to the Salvos and donate what you can. If you cannot donate money what about clothes, toys, kitchen goods and the like? Many have lost houses and need things to start again.
On the SBS website there is a page about what you can do to help, NSW bushfires: How you can help. It mentions that goods like kitchen items or electrical might not be the best way to go. Giving money empowers the people affected to get what they need and the right things rather than things go to waste or not get properly stored.
I will go through my things and see if there is anything that will be able to help a family in need.
Fire Updates for NSW
The weather is predicted to get worse for Sunday and Monday. Currently in Katoomba it is quite mild and not a lot of wind. Due to not much wind the smoke is settling and not moving. Please keep up to date on what is going on in affected areas and keep safe.
I have listed the NSW Rural Fire website, also ABC News and Radio sites. ABC has great coverage in times like these and give you up to date info as does the NSW Rural Fire Service.
Hope you are all safe and well if you are in a fire danger zone. I and others are thinking of you all.
I am not sure what is worse, a person selling a paper bag for $285 or a person willing to purchase the paper bag. Currently Jill Sander’s a fashion designer who has a paper bag for sale and it is selling for $285, but the weird part is that they have sold out.
I for one would not purchase a paper bag worth so much, and I am wondering why others have rushed to get such an expensive paper bag. Why is it worth so much? What makes it so expensive? Is it the fact that it is a designer paper bag? Could I create my own line of paper bags and make a fortune? These are some of the questions I am entertaining currently. Maybe I should give it a go. Check out my first stab at a designer paper bag, I have to perfect my design but think I might be onto something, will practice and showcase my work soon.
At first I thought how silly of the designer to design a product that clearly is not worth the price tag, but I have changed my mind. I am now finding the consumer the silly part of the equation. If the business thinks there might be a market and wants to have a go to see if the public would bite, as it is a bit of a laugh all until the product becomes popular and it sells. I say why not. It is just weird that consumers don’t see past the designer label and see it is still a paper bag and not worth $285.
Just for those people out there thinking how much does a paper bag cost well I have found out. At Woolworths online shop a pack of 100 paper lunch bags cost: $2.93, so that is a cost of 0.13 for each bag. Even shopping with Bag Mart Australia would still be a bargain compared to Jill Sander’s paper bag. No matter which way you look, this designer paper bag is not worth it.
It is very good marketing by Jill Sander’s and team, how much they have earned from just a paper bag, the mark-up must be huge! It just goes to show that the public will purchase anything if it is marketed in the right way.
Maybe I am just missing the point of this special paper bag, if I am please send me the reason that it is so expensive and a must have item. I personally would just go and get a standard cheap paper bag from the supermarket or the shops.
Do you think this item is worth $285 or is it just designers hoping to sell for an inflated price? I for one think it is inflated and not worth it. Send in your comments.
