DIY Pumpkin Beauty Products

Have you ever wondered how easy it is to create your own natural beauty products? How about making pumpkin beauty products?

I know I have and thought it would be hard, in fact it is super easy and fun. However, it can get a bit messy, so take care.

Autumn is here, and cooler weather means hearty food; Stews, casseroles, roast meat with vegetables and more.

Pumpkin is one of my favourites. What about you?

Some things I love to make with pumpkin are mash, roast pumpkin and pumpkin chips with a little bit of cheese melted over them. What is your favourite pumpkin dish?

I stocked up on pumpkins from my local greengrocer, The Veggie Patch at Blackheath.  Getting your fruit and veg from a local greengrocer is great.

The idea of using the left over pumpkin mash means that my body is getting the vitamins on the skin, it is all natural, there is less waste, it is good for me.

How to make Pumpkin Mash?

Firstly, you need to cut up your pumpkin into smaller chunks. Making all the pumpkin into similar sizes means that it will be cooked quickly, and all the pumpkin will cook at the same rate.

Once all done put a cup or two of water into a saucepan and boil the water. Once boiling add the pumpkin and leave on the stove until it is all soft and ready to be mashed up.

If you are using the mash for eating you generally add some milk and butter, plus you could add other items to the mash, for example onions, and crushed up almonds or pumpkin seeds.

If you are using the pumpkin mash for beauty products, then just mash it up and put it in a sealed container until you are ready to create your own handmade works of beauty.

What are the health benefits of pumpkin?

  • Great source of fibre
  • High in beta-carotene
  • May help with reducing diabetes, heart disease, and some cancers and also help delay ageing and body degeneration.
  • Pumpkins also have calcium, magnesium and some B vitamins.
  • Beta-carotene helps boost the immune system.
  • Pumpkins are high in antioxidants – Vitamin C, and Vitamin E.

Why is it good for your skin?

Pumpkins are a great source of Vitamin A and Vitamin C. These helpful vitamins help soften skin while improving any damaged cells. What a powerful vegetable is the pumpkin!

What did I use to create my pumpkin beauty products?

All the items I needed for my homemade pumpkin beauty products. Some were good enough to eat!

  • Mashed Pumpkin
  • Brown Sugar
  • Coconut Oil
  • Olive Oil
  • Yoghurt
  • 1 egg
  • The Apple Cider Vinegar was for the Pumpkin Face Mask for oily skin, but I didn’t make this one. Read on to see the recipe for this face mask as well.
  • Honey
  • Measuring cups
  • Spoons
  • Containers to store the products in

Make sure to refrigerate your items after you make them. They are made with real vegetables and therefore will perish if not kept well. Use quickly and enjoy!

What pumpkin beauty products did I make?

I’ve created a sheet so that you can have all the info in one spot, download all the pumpkin beauty recipes in one PDF printable.

  • Pumpkin Body Sugar Scrub
Mix 1 cup of pumpkin mash with 1 cup of sugar. Add a tablespoon of olive oil and mix together until you make a paste.

  • Pumpkin Body Butter
Mix 1 cup of pumpkin mash with 1 cup of coconut oil. You can make a smaller batch, but if you are like me you will love this and so will your skin.
I ended up putting the mixture in my blender to get all the lumps of the coconut oil out. Smother over your skin during a shower.

The Pumpkin Body Butter is my favourite product.

My skin gets so dry during Autumn and Winter, the cooler air zaps the moisture from my skin and means I need to be vigilant with the body moisturiser.

  • Pumpkin Face Mask for Dry Skin
Mix 1/4 cup of pumpkin with 1 teaspoon of olive oil, 1 teaspoon of honey and 1 whole egg. Mix until all smooth, then you test it out. I left it on for 20 minutes.

  • Pumpkin Sugar Lip Scrub
Mix 1 teaspoon or 1/4 teaspoon of pumpkin mash with a 1/4 teaspoon of olive oil (or you could use coconut oil), and add 1 teaspoon or half a teaspoon of fine sugar (I used brown sugar).
Mix all ingredients together, and then rub on lips to exfoliate.

  • Pumpkin Hair Conditioner
Mix 1 cup pumpkin mash and 1 cup of yoghurt, plus a teaspoon of honey.  I couldn’t help myself as this mixture smelt amazing I had to have a taste, and it was so yummy!
What other hair conditioner could you eat as well?
Leave for 30 minutes. Have a shower afterwards to make sure it is all washed out.

I didn’t make the below pumpkin face mask. My skin is rather dry, so I wanted a mask that will help my skin feel more hydrated.

  • Pumpkin Face Mask for Oily Skin
Here is the breakdown of how to make this other pumpkin face mask:
Mix 1/4 cup of mashed pumpkin with 1 whole egg, add 1 tablespoon of Apple Cider Vinegar and mix together. Leave on for 20 minutes then wash off.
All pumpkin beauty products that I made. The one in the big bowl is the pumpkin face mask for dry skin, I was about to put it into my recycled yoghurt container.

What else can you make with pumpkins?

For the body: Soap, foot scrub, and other face masks.

To eat: Cakes, soups, pumpkin butter, pies, drinks, bake the seeds to eat later, muffins, smoothies, add to your breakfast cereal (oats), use the mash as baby food or addition in meals to help kids eat more veggies.

For fun: Halloween lanterns and bowls for a dip at parties.

I hope this post gives you some inspiration to make your own cheap pumpkin beauty products.

Winter is Upon Us and so is Illness

One kid hasn’t been well, the other kid is now telling me she isn’t feeling the best and the youngest is constantly having accidents and hurting himself.

It seems like a horrible joke that everyone wants to be ill at the same time!

Why does everyone get sick in winter and nearly at the same time???
Why does everyone get sick in winter and nearly at the same time???

Winter this year was a rude shock. It actually started a week early and was so cold, freezing to be precise. Icy winds, some snow fell but never settled and the heater has been going nonstop. Oh and not to mention the winter woollies are making an appearance – Multiple layers, beanie and scarf.

The kid that wasn’t well had to be taken to the doctor due to a horrible temperature and fever that was getting worse. Initially, I thought that she was over the worst of it but it wasn’t getting better, the doctor then told us that she had an ear infection and needed antibiotics.

This kid that hasn’t been well and not eating a lot and has dropped a few kgs. She is also fighting me on drinking Hydralyte, the reason I want her to drink this is due to the fact her joints are sore and she is finding it hard to walk.   Electrolytes in the Hydralyte help your muscles and therefore will help her feel better when walking, also eating more will help too.

She is eating toast and drinking water, so I hope her food intake will pick up soon. She has no temperatures and seems so much better than a few days ago.

Her attitude is there and she is telling jokes so I know she is on the mend.

Have you noticed that your kids are getting sick now that the cold weather is upon us?

I was going to get us all the flu shot but need to wait until everyone is well to do so.

Healthy Habits with Dettol

Do you start to worry when winter approaches? Do the kids get colds and the flu easily? Does it happen more now that they go to school or day care? I have had my fair share of sickness with the twins and being exposed to more germs at school can make things harder for the whole family.

So how do you all remain healthy in cold and flu season?

Make sure you teach your little ones about proper hand hygiene techniques. I’m sure you are already telling your kids to make sure they wash their hands after eating, the toilet and so on. I know I do.

This hand wash is fab as it smells divine and of course gets rid of the nasty germs.

Parents are teaching their children about proper hygiene but it can fall down when they are at school or elsewhere. Do you know if there is a policy to wash hands after eating or playing? I don’t, but will definitely ask now.

The lovely people at Dettol sent me this care pack so we can not get sick this winter. It has helped and with us getting a cold while on our holidays I have used this to ensure we don't get anymore nasties.

The simplest and cheapest way to make sure you don’t spread germs on your hands is to wash them well with soap.

To help get the message across to little people Dettol have teamed up with Tina Harris, who stars  as Lah-Lah from Lah-Lah’s Big Live Band and she has created the below song to help encourage kids to wash hands and to stay healthy this winter.

Did you know?

Dettol has also created a free initiative available to all primary schools in Australia. It has been developed alongside the “NSW Department of Education and Training to provide teachers with a range of curriculum aligned resources to help students stay happy and healthy.” If you wish to recommend that your school take part download the letter and give to your school or email Dettol to be part of the program now.

In my pack from Dettol I have a laminated card. This will be put up in the bathroom once the renovations are complete. It lists all 5 tips to ensure you have really well washed hands.

Have you succumbed to the flu or a cold during winter? Or have you managed to dodge any germs so far? If you have what do you do to remain healthy during winter?

Thanks so much to Dettol for sending me a care package. It has come in very handy.

Winter Wonderland

Today we woke to snow everywhere. Yes we were snowed in. The depth of the snow was about 15cms and 30cms in parts. Very deep for up here. The whole area has been blanketed by white bright snow. As I write this the snow is slowly melting and we are all enjoying a hot cuppa, well the kids are having a hot Milo.

Our snow filled street

School was closed, the roads were closed and we could not go anywhere. Hubby could not get to work and was able to enjoy the snow day with all of us. Most times when it snows he misses out so it is finally nice to the whole family home on this occasion.

Our snowed in letterbox. No mail today!

I know this might be cold for most of you but the temperature has just hit 2 degrees so it is slowly getting warmer (well it was when I started writing this post at about 2ish this afternoon). I did see a big black cloud on our walk with the neighbours to the local oval and was told that we might get some rain this afternoon/evening.

I do like the snow but due needing to pick up tiles in Penrith tomorrow having it melt might allow the roads to be reopened and for us to get them. We were lucky and the roads opened up late this afternoon and we managed to pick up the tiles so no need to worry.

After we got home from getting the tiles, Hubby helped the kids build a second snowman. Hope it is there still in the morning.

I must say today was a magical adventure and it was lovely that we could all be here to witness the snow and be involved with it. It was also nice that the kids and hubby were not at school or work and we all had a great day together.

Did it snow at your place? I heard it snowed in Queensland as well. Apparently this is the biggest fall of snow we have had since 1984. Yes, amazing isn’t it!

Let us know if you had a snow day today.

Mountains V’s Beach. Which is best?

I grew up in North Queensland, Hervey Bay to be precise. My childhood consisted of playing outdoors, cycling on my push bike, swimming, snorkelling and outdoor activities.

Summer is my favourite season and I adore the heat, so why do I now live in Katoomba in the Blue Mountains? Where most of the time it is wet, freezing, cold, gale force winds and just miserable. There is a small window where it nice; warm or hot that you could think it was summer but for me it never lasts long enough; and sometimes we never get a summer and it feels like it is constantly winter!

Katoomba in Winter.
Katoomba in Winter.

I have been in the Blue Mountains for over ten years now and has the environment rubbed off on me? Do I still yearn for the beach, the sun and the all round great weather?

Well the answer is Yes, I still long for the beach and all that goes with it. You cannot change how you grew up and what you long for.

I’m sure that you think that the mountains cannot be so bad. It does have some great things going for it:

  • Great air to breathe.
  • Outdoor spaces to play in and to use. Walks, climbing and parks.
  • You can see stars that you will not see in the city or in built up areas.
  • Greater value for houses and real estate, allows you to get a foot hold in the property market.
  • Live closer to nature. Surrounded by national parks and nature.
  • Experience four seasons and sometimes just one. In October 2012 we had deep snow and it was freezing (see image gallery below). It did not snow in winter but waited till Spring to do this.
  • Cooler in summer compared to the city. This is great if you like the heat but don’t to get too hot.
  • Feels like we live in tourist central, this gives us more choice and infrastructure to our area.

One of the main reasons that I am in the Blue Mountains is due to my hubby. He cannot stand the heat and deals with the cold better. So I love the heat and I hate the cold. In summer in Katoomba the temperature is warm and sometimes hot but not as bad as it would be in the city. This is a good compromise, however I wish it would work better for me in winter.

I brave the freezing cold for my hubby, how nice of me. What have you done for your partner?

The view from our room at the QT on the Gold Coast.
The view from our room at the QT on the Gold Coast.

What is so wonderful about the beach and warmer weather?

  • Better climate to allow more activities to happen year round rather than just certain times of the year.
  • Makes me feel great and energised.
  • Love the salt water.
  • Love the smell of the sand, sea and the idea that the days seem endless.
  • Due to better climate more outdoor activity can be had.

As I write this I am in my hotel room on the Gold Coast. It has been a lovely hot day and just enjoyable weather. I can smell the sea air and it just makes me feel good. Feels like home. I am pleased that I am getting my fix for what I long for, and hope that I can repeat it soon.

The mountains has great qualities also, the fog that makes it so appealing. The trees that change colour in autumn and look so pretty in their reds, browns, and yellows. I know the whole dynamic of the Blue Mountains would change if it was constantly warm and sunny. There would be no curling up in front of the open fire and snuggling with your hot chocolate or skinny cap or maybe a glass of port.

Mind you I do like these things in the mountains, but I hate the cold, and cannot stand dealing with the layers of clothes that is needed to stay warm.

I  have decided that I don’t like winter and never will. I love and hang out for summer, summer holidays, Christmas and spending time at the beach, pool and just being outdoors.

What are your thoughts? What is wonderful about the mountains or the beach? What is your favourite?

My plants think its spring

The last week or so I have noticed it is getting warmer. Don’t worry it is still cold and icy at times and it is still winter but not as cold as it normally is this time of year. As it is still officially winter it should be cold and the plants should not be flowering or acting like it is Spring or any other time of the year.

My garden thinks it is Spring and this is a terrible thing! Things are all out of whack, the plants that are flowering normally flower in our yard about mid to late August and at the latest September. It is July, yes it is nearly August and it is only a couple of days till the first day of August but for us this is early.

Is your garden blooming with flowers or buds waiting to open up with wonderful colour? Mine is. Check out the pictures I took today.

Lovely red flower

You will see that the blossom tree has actual blossoms on it. I know it is hard to see but it is exciting. The one above once covered with blossoms smells like honey and it is a delight to have at our house. Makes everything smell amazing. I just hope that the wind goes away. I hate it when my blossom tree does flower and then the wind carrys the blossoms away, it does not last long.

Is your garden thinking it is Spring? Or is it just mine? Send in your comments.

Winter is coming…Wait it’s Here!

Winter is here
Winter is here

Today is the 1st of June and is the first day of winter here. Yesterday you would have never guessed winter was around the corner, it was a sunny and warmish day, and there was no wind and it was very pleasant. So how does it know to be colder, windy and just more miserable looking on the first day of winter?

Do you hate winter? I am not a fan, it gets very cold and unpleasant here. I love summer and the warmer months. Maybe that is due to being from Queensland originally? I have a feeling my kids have adapted to the cooler climate and will not like warmer ones to my upset.

Current temperatures are:

  • Current temp: 10.8°C
  • Feels like: 8.2°C
  • Humidity: 81%
  • Wind: WNW 22km/h
  • Wind gusts: 39km/

Not freezing and is not too bad but it is definitely getting cooler.

Do you like winter? What is your favourite time of year? I’m glad our winter is nothing like the winter in the Game of Thrones, they keep on saying winter is coming and it sounds scary! Well sometimes I think our winter is scary but not that fierce or snow laden.

It is also amazing that we are nearly half way through the year! Gosh that has happened fast. Best get busy with what I want to achieve or else the year will be over soon.

Questions answered for week 1 at least

Today dropped the kids off at school, but before that, there were many meltdowns. I don’t want to wear those shoes mummy and not that shirt or dress. Oh, why can’t we just put clothes on and get out the door. Then the running around to avoid mummy as she wanted to brush hair. So after all this carry on, we were late getting to school. The only up side to getting to school today was getting  a park and dropping the girls off without a fuss, like the other day. YES!

Finally back home, I make a cuppa tea, put the heater on and a jumper. Very cold today, and not happy about that, but pleased that the house is warm. I am at the computer to tackle my first week of tutorial questions from university. I am just amazed at all the theories about the same area that are surfacing. I am sure that they were there before, just was not exposed to the idea before now. Today I managed to learn about complex adaptive and transactional models in project management. I have also addressed the difference between a manager and a leader, and why in some examples certain projects were failures or a success.  I finished it all, uploaded it online to the university’s site and all is good, very pleased and happy with me today. I know small things make me happy.

I am not sure that I was o.k with all my answers but pleased it is completed. Now on to read more and to get started on my individual assignment, organise a day per week to meet with my group for our assignment and generally research the whole subject. This will be done a piece at a time, not that clever it can all happen in one day or week. After reading this it made it sound like I am super study woman.

Today I had hoped to see if I could finish the pants that I am making for the girls. It was rather cool today, so thinking winter will be very cold indeed. Oh well at least the uni thing this week is not needing to be done and now I can do the pants without thinking about uni. The problem is that if I know I need to do something and want to do something else, I think about the other as it needs to be done before the other. I know, it is hard. However, having limited time to ones self is hard to try and fit it all in.Is this just me that does this. I used to be so organised with a day job, children have thrown me around a bit.  I need to get my to do list organised.

So the weekend I think will be making and finishing pants time. I promise pictures to come soon.

If you have had some time to yourself this week, what did you get up to? Are you studying? If you are studying, have you managed to get things done? Wishing you all luck if you are in the same boat as me, and that you will get all your work done.
