What did I think of EveryPlate

I think you already know my thoughts on having meals delivered.

I love it. Anything that makes my life easier is something I embrace and want to continue to do.

Mexican Chicken & Corn Salad with Sweet Potato Wedges & Mayo

The ingredients were fresh and the recipe cards were easy to follow, with only 4 steps in most of them.

The ingredients from EveryPlate

Below are my favourite things about meal kits

  • You don’t have to think about what is for dinner – you just need to cook it
  • You don’t need to leave the house to collect the items for your meals – they are delivered to your door, thanks EveryPlate.
  • Even for the extras, you can still get home delivery from Woolworths.yes you never have to leave the house if you don’t want to.
  • Now, all we need to do is to think about how to pack a chef, cleaner, and housekeeper in an EveryPlate box and I will be winning on all fronts.

A few things we were not happy about:

  • Some of the recipes were missing a few ingredients but I substituted them, and the meals still tasted great. I did think that the kids might have used an ingredient for another meal, but they assured me they hadn’t. Maybe it was packing haste at EveryPlate HQ that meant we were missing a few things from our box.
  • I was given a free code to get an EveryPlate meal box to review. I waited until the box arrived to then cancel my subscription. I thought it was successfully cancelled but I was billed for another week. I was then told that I had to cancel on Tuesday, not Wednesday.
The Nutty Sweet Chilli Noodles with Veggies and Sesame Seeds

Although I paid for the experience, I did enjoy the meals. My extra box allowed me to make my very first risotto, I had always thought that this was a terribly complicated meal to create…in fact it was super easy to do.

Getting the salad ready

Another thing that I never really noticed before was how the two weeks of having the EveryPlate meal box made me more relaxed.

How you ask? I think it was not having to plan and think about all the meals for the weeks ahead, not having to shop and be in charge of it all.

It wasn’t my job to create the meals, it wasn’t my job to get all ingredients for the meals, and finally it was easy to just tell someone that there is a meal kit ready to go and to pick a recipe and cook something for the family – as it was family friendly the kids were able to help out more.

The Chorizo & Roast Veggies cooked a super simple and tasty meal.
Adding the salad the Chorizo & Roast Veggies – this was soooooooo yummy!

If you are thinking about simplifying your life and getting more time for yourself and the family then I would urge you to try an EveryPlate meal box, if you do you will win at dinner.

What were my favourite meals from EveryPlate

It is so easy to get stuck in your ways. You get tired, and don’t have the time or energy to do anything different or complicated so an easy meal you have made a million times is what is served.

My favourites were:

Sticky Lemon Chicken with Fries and Stir-fried Veggies – This meal was so tasty and the sauce was tangy with the lemon.

Chorizo & Roast Veggie Salad with Garlic Aioli – I really loved this meal. It was so yummy and morish, and oh so simple to make. I will make this again, as it was a HUGE hit with all the family.

Try EveryPlate to break your monotony of everyday meals…yes you can win at dinner with EveryPlate.

My readers can get up to $115 on your first four boxes, with dinner from as little as $2.39 per plate. To get this deal click here

Westward American Single Malt Whiskey

I’d not been aware of WestWard before or their whiskey offering. I normally lean towards an Irish whiskey or an American bourbon if given the chance – or even a pint a Guinness – so I was keen to sample WestWard’s mash.

On cracking open the bottle of WestWard American Single Malt Whiskey, I was struck with the classic full aroma that you get from good whiskeys – not the severe eye-watering alcohol waft that comes from those cheap mass-market brands – especially, I find, from scotch whiskeys – but a well-rounded and glorious sniff that comes from whiskeys that have been crafted with skill, care, and quality ingredients and equipment, which I’d expect from a craft distiller like Westward.

And it was a good introduction to the brand, as on first sip it didn’t disappoint. The rolling flavours that came forth were light, rich, bold, and very well balanced, giving off notes and aromas that I’d expect from a much more high-end and expensive bottle of whiskey. In fact, the full-body-flavours lasted well after I’d finished the sip – they kept dancing around my mouth enticing me to take another – of which I generously obliged.

This whiskey is not a weak, vapid, cheap tipple, but a whiskey that grabbed me with both arms, a whiskey that I’d look forward to after a hard day on the chainsaw, a whiskey that will keep me warm and toasty on the bitterly cold nights here in the upper Blue Mountains – especially when the snow has started falling or when the Antarctic cold blasts hit us from Kosciuszko!

This whiskey is certainly now on my watch list.

You can pick up a bottle of WestWard American Single Malt Whiskey 700mL from Dan Murphy’s for $115.90

A BIG THANK YOU to WestWard American Whiskey for sending us this fabulous bottle to try.  Grab a bottle for the perfect gift or surprise for someone special.

Stay tuned for an upcoming giveaway to win some smaller bottles of WestWard Whiskey Cold Fashioned.

Make Dinner Easy with Hello Fresh

Hello Fresh Australia sent us a box to test out.  I’ve never used Hello Fresh, known anyone that has, or had a chance to experience their food… well that was until now.

We were excited to give it a go and see if all the hype and advertisements lived up to reality.  Spoiler alert: Hello Fresh is beyond amazing and more!

Due to Father’s Day, we have been making some fabulous creations all from the help of the Hello Fresh box.

I would highly recommend getting a Hello Fresh Box to make dad an amazing, healthy and yummy meal.

It has made me not wonder what will I cook for dinner tonight… as it is already sorted.

The box came with everything that you would need to cook any of the meals that are listed on the recipe cards.

Some of the meals that we have had are:

  • Caribbean Chicken & Coconut Rice
  • Nonna’s Beef Taco’s
  • Lamb & Spinach Shepherd’s Pie
  • Chicken & Bacon Pesto Pasta

My little masterchefs helped me make Caribbean Chicken & Coconut Rice. It was so fabulous.

What have I loved about Hello Fresh?

  • Fresh ingredients
  • Easy to follow recipe cards
  • Food packs are in brown paper bags that have matching colours to the recipe cards. The bags fit neatly in the fridge and
  • Nearly 100% recyclable packaging (love the fact that Hello Fresh is focused on looking after the environment)

I’ve been super impressed with the quality of Hello Fresh’s food and how simple it is to create gourmet meals for the family, that I have signed up as an affiliate.

Decorate Handkerchiefs with Stained Sharpies

It is always nice to have gifts that are unique. A gift that has meaning, and of course is special to you and others.

Creating a gift that is a work of art is even better.

How about decorating a handkerchief for dad, mum, or anyone!

This gift idea is not only just for dads but can be for mum, grandparents, friends or even as a teacher gift.

Yes, this idea is easily adapted to whoever you wish to give it to. It just depends on your imagination.

This simple DIY gift is super easy to create and won’t cost the earth.

Equipment Need:

  • Handkerchiefs – You can purchase some or even make some if you are crafty at sewing. I purchased plain white ones. You can get different colours with patterns if you wish and incorporate this into your design.
  • A pack of Stained Sharpie Pens (Fabric Markers)
  • Cardboard or paper to put on desk to make sure that the pens don’t bleed onto the desk.

Before you get started with your design it is always advisable to think about what you would like to achieve.

Check out what I created below:

A Breakdown of my decorated handkerchief:

  • For my first attempt at decorating the handkerchief, I just stuck to patterns in one colour.
  • I alternated rows to give it a better visual effect.
  • As the handkerchief had a pattern on the border I decided to not decorate there and leave the pattern the way it was originally.
  • Once the patterns in the red colour were finished, I then added some text on one side of the handkerchief and did it on the other end, and it is upside down from each other. This was done on purpose to make sure the text can be read no matter which way you have the handkerchief.
  • I was going to iron the handkerchief afterwards to heat set but have read that this is not needed for the Sharpie pens.
  • One post that I read recommended leaving the decoration for an hour to set.

The twins have both decorated their own handkerchiefs for daddy and I think they look amazing.

If you need a quick gift I would give this a go. I’m sure he will not have anything like it and of course love the fact that it is such a personal gift.

If you do create a handkerchief decorated with sharpies for Father’s Day it would be amazing if you could share your pictures on our Facebook Page. I am sure that we can gain inspiration from your creations.

DIY: Hand & Foot Print Canvas

Need a unique gift for a family member? Don’t have heaps of money? Well, this great project will give you a cheap gift and your family member will cherish the present for years to come.

This gift can be for birthdays, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Celebrating being a new mum/dad, or even Christmas.  So don’t worry it will be perfect for any occasion.

Create your own hand and feet print canvas, great gift idea. Be prepared for mess. It was a bunch of fun though, but the baby got the messiest. Enjoy!
Create your own hand and feet print canvas, great gift idea. Be prepared for a mess. It was a bunch of fun though, but the baby got the messiest. Enjoy!

Gather Your Materials

  • Washable Paint. If you have more than 1 child you will need different colours for each child. I purchased red, blue and white paint. I made purple paint and also pink out of these colours. I ended up having purple, pink and blue for the 3 kids to use.
  • Canvas (You can small sizes, large ones or enormous size canvas. It is up to you and the project you are making) I chose small square ones so that they would easily fit in the post and also on a wall.
  • Newspaper to cover the floor or outside area. This makes sure you don’t get too messy.
  • Towels – You might want to have towels set up on the floor to protect the path to the bathroom so that your very messy kids can not mess things up too much once they get in there to get clean. I do find that if my kids are head to toe covered in paint, the walls and doors get covered in it too. Therefore having a washable paint is ideal as all you have to do is to give the wall and floor a quick wipe and all is good.
  • Paintbrushes – We used paintbrushes to put the paint on hands and feet. You can just put your hands and feet in the paint but using the paintbrush made it a bit easier.

How To Create the Prints

Step 1: Have your paint ready to go. If you need to mix colours have it all organised before the kids get near it.

Step 2: Put the newspaper down and then lay the canvas on top.

Step 3: Make sure kids are in clothes that can get dirty and then paint a foot or a hand and press on the canvas. (You might want to figure out where each hand and foot is going to go on the canvas. You don’t want to figure it out with excited kids who are ready to paint everything and anything. Before we put anything on a canvas I spoke to the girls about where each person’s hand was going to go and we were going to save space for the baby as well.)

Step 4: Since I was making more than one canvas at the same time I did this 3 times for each person. I made one for my Mother in Law, one for my mum and also one for me!

Step 5: Once you have all the hands and prints on the canvas, it now needs to dry. It should dry well overnight and be ready to post the next day. I picked one up for my Mother in Law. It just needed some bubble wrap to protect it and it sat in the box with the other goodies for her birthday.

This is a good rainy day activity. I am sure it will keep the kids happy and having fun. Afterward, they can have a bubble bath and you get some peace and quiet after they are relaxed and tired.

Maybe after the bath put on a film for them to watch or read them a story…… I do live in hope that the kids will be super tired after activities.

Oh well, whatever you do enjoy. I hope this gives you some great ideas and a cheap gift idea to create.

A Star Wars Father’s Day

Today is Father’s Day. Today it was seven years ago I went off to hospital to have the twins. It was more like waiting a week to have them but it was on Father’s Day that it all happened. It makes me wonder when it will all happen with this baby? Will it be Christmas Day? New Year’s Day or will it be on time? Who knows. The only thing that has been happening is that whoever is in my belly is jumping around and is very active. I must have a trampoline in there?? It feels like that is the case at times.

The kids and I have secretly put all hubby’s surprises on his desk.

Father's Day Presents for Hubby

What did we get him you ask?

I decided to make him something as I did not see really anything that he could use or might want.  One of the girls who was with me picked out a special cookbook that came with cookie cutters.

Star Wars Cookbook that hubby got for Father's Day
Star Wars Cookbook that hubby got for Father’s Day

One of the girls helped me with picking something from the cookbook to make for daddy for Father’s Day. She picked Chewy Chocolate Cookies. We got all the ingredients and then made our big batch of cookies.  The reciepe made heaps of dough so I had heaps of cookies to make.

The kids are rather taken with Star Wars lately. They know many of the characters and like the action and the stories.

One child also purchased some Anzac Biscuits at the school Father’s Day shop. I think daddy will have plenty of snacks to eat and of course more to cook in his cookbook.

We are taking hubby out for lunch to celebrate Father’s Day. I have not booked anywhere so I hope we can get in. I did not think to make a reservation and just hope that we are lucky to get in for lunch where we like or at least somewhere else.

What are you doing for Father’s day? Did dad/hubby like their presents?

DIY: Get Creative with Sharpies

This post was originally created for a Father’s Day tutorial. However this could be applied for Christmas gifts, birthdays and anything at all. Use it to create some great presents for Christmas.

I do have something organised for hubby for Father’s Day. However I thought it might be nice for the twins to do something creative for daddy themselves. I have had some friends do things with sharpie pens and I have always been curious. Online I saw that you can decorate a mug/cup with sharpie pens, then bake it and all good to use. How amazing and interesting. Will it work? The only way is to give it a go.

createacupfordad_web

So I got the kids some sharpie pens from the shop and a white mug each and then each child had to decorate them.  I told them that they can do whatever design they wished to. One child was very expressive and creative and wanted to colour the whole mug in and the other was trying to draw and write more on the mug. Interesting the difference. It did not matter what they created, it was an expression of them to their daddy.

What do you need?

1. Sharpie Pens. I purchased mine individually as this worked out a little cheaper. You can get a pack of 12 for about $20. Packs I saw for less varied between $14 or more.

2. A cup or a mug to decorate. I choose to have white mugs as then the colours from the pens will show up more

3. An oven to bake the mugs in

Concentrating on her creation for daddy.
Concentrating on her creation for daddy.

What is the process?

1. Once you have all your materials ready you can then start.

2. Decorate your mugs

3. Finalise your decoration and once happy you are ready to bake in the oven.

4. Bake in the oven for 30mins at 180°C or 356°F

Once baked you are good to use the cup. Might need to wait a bit and hand wash carefully to make sure it is all clean to use. As I have never done this before I am keen to see how they go. I would not put in the dishwasher.

Happy creating and this is a great cheap last minute gift for Father’s Day. Have fun!

Note: Some colours after it was baked have changed. The gold seems to have turned into brown. Maybe I need to get different sharpies next time.

Planet Pooh

Today the girls have had heaps of energy. We decided to have lunch outside as the day was so nice, not a cloud in the sky and lovely blue skies. Although not very warm it was warmer than it has been, the second day of spring is making me think that summer is going to be warm. Yes finally a warm summer to look forward to.

Now back to the girls. They were running riot, racing around from one end of the house to the other. Running races, kids were pretending to be rats – (they are rats in the Chinese Horoscope and we have told them this so now they play rats) while pretending to be rats daddy and mummy were referred to as mumma and dada rat.

Lillian then decided that she was a rocket and was flying around the garden; she then had to fly to the bathroom for a toilet stop. Once she flew back to the backyard she flew just past the clothes line and then announced she had run out of petrol. Thank goodness the chair next to her was a petrol station so she could fuel up and be on her way to “Planet Pooh!”

Daddy and I had no idea that Planet Pooh was in our backyard and that the girls had their own personal rockets to fly there at a moment’s notice.  Then all of a sudden, no more rockets and no more Planet Pooh, it was Mr Whippy. Lillian decided she was Mr Whippy and she got out the truck that their cousin gave them and zipped that around the yard as if she was off on deliveries.

Mr Whippy or Lillian did get upset at various times as her ice-creams were lost when her helpful assistant tried to clean the truck and melted the ice-creams. Then the girls swapped and Julia was Mr Whippy then Lillian was a customer.

The outside play today ended by the girls making mud and mud pies. As you might have imagined this ended with very messy kids and an annoyed daddy as he had to have them in the shower and clean the bathroom due to the mud. I suppose the kids were just trying to make him feel loved on Father’s Day.

We did have an incident at the supermarket when one of the girls lost it and had a temper tantrum, and this one child has been a sensitive little person all day. Maybe she is just very tired? I am hoping that they will just go to sleep without a hassle and not play the game of can I get a book, a drink, need to go to the bathroom every second and want to come out to tell you something that they have already told you a million times.

As I write this there has been another meltdown about a block. The same little girl who I believe is tried from yesterday is creating issues. We went to my nana’s (the girls GG) for lunch to celebrate her birthday. It was a long day and as there have been many meltdowns and problems I really think it is the fact she needs to have more sleep. Let’s hope this happens, currently she is in her room for time out as she was very naughty.

Have your kids had heaps of energy today? If so what have you done to exhaust them?  Has it worked? Send in your comments.

Father’s Day at Pre-School

Daddy came to pre-school today to celebrate Father’s Day. The girls and the other kids sang songs, and did dances. There was a sandpit, making things with clay, hammering things and other activities to join in with. The girls told daddy that they wanted to create things with clay and so all three of them created some great works of art.  Both girls were tickled pink that he came to see the surprises and to be with them at school this afternoon.
