Mudgee Escape

The other weekend I went to Mudgee with a girlfriend. We were desperate for some down time and by that away from comittments and family.

The destination wasn’t that important the only important aspect to our weekend was RELAXATION!

We arrived to our hotel around dinner time Friday night as we left after work. It was a bit of a drive but a fun adventure. Once checked into our hotel my girlfriend and I attempted to have dinner at the resturant but that was not to be as they had hit their limit for diners due to covid restrictions. It was suggested we have room service instead and after a big day, a car trip that was rather a good idea.

The food at the Comfort Inn Mudgee is fabulous and so yummy! The restaurant is called Palate and if you can have the barrmundai it was AMAZING!

Our room was clean and tidy, and the beds are super comfortable. It was a little older but nothing horrible, we stayed two nights and it suited our needs and was just right. Perfect place for a getaway or a stop over with the family if you are travelling.

My friend booked us into a wine tour for our Saturday and I must say after we got back to our hotel we were rather buggered from all the tasting we had done. A lie down and rest was in order.

We were so exhausted from visiting wineries that we decided to do room service again and watch Netflix. I know this might not sound adventurous but if you are mum to three kids, who also works and has no down time this was just what I needed. Plus my mate enjoyed just not being on call to anyone too.

If you too would love to do a wine tour of Mudgee I would strongly recommend Maritza from Country Escape Tours. Maritza was fun, personable and very knowledgeable about the region and wines. It was a lot of fun and everyone on the bus got along and had a wonderful time.

Sunday we decided to drive to Rylstone to check out the shops and have lunch. It was fun as I bought the kids some fun pants and before we left Mudgee I also got the twins (jackets from a second hand shop) and Alex (hot wheel cars and tracks) some presents .

Our lunch while in Rystone was dumplings…yes dumplings. 29 Nine 99 Dumplings was a great find and I must say we will go back. If you do want to eat at this resturant they only take cash so make sure you have enough on you to ensure you will be able to have enough dumplings…they are yummy and I could have had a few more! We cannot get this in the mountains so it was a great treat. I did send a picture to hubby to make him jealous too.

After lunch, we slowly made our way back home and on the way, I was alerted to the drama that awaited me. One girl had accidentally hit the other in the eye with the Wii controller…this ended up with the injured child having a cut to the top of the eye, it is swollen and very black. Also, the youngest was completely distraught with the fact that mummy went away for two days, and was extremely upset and kept on wanting me.

Coming home was nice but I think I could have done with more than two days away.

Have you enjoyed time away lately? Did you arrive to disasters at home? I do hope that your escape was relaxing. Mine was and I do think I need to go away more to have some time out.

Where do you think I should visit next?

Popular Wine For the Holidays

Have you ever wondered what wine variety is the most popular in Australia? I have. According to this infographic from Wine Selectors, it seems like a Chardy and Shiraz are highly popular in Australia. Not really surprising with the Chardonnay. When I was little it seemed everyone drank this wine.

We are not the largest producer of wine in the world. This honour belongs to Italy, however, we do produce enough to satisfy everyone in Australia and more!

With the holiday season fast approaching what is your favourite drop?

I do like a nice Rosé on a hot summer day, or it could be a nice Sauvignon Blanc.  I am also partial to a nice red so a Shiraz or a Merlot depending on how I feel.

I might be having a nice drink after I brave Westfield for last-minute Christmas shopping.  Yes, I am crazy, hubby, the twins and I need to go to the big shopping centre for more choice. No way of getting out of it. I hope all goes well! Wish me luck. I do love going there, just not when it is so busy!

Remember: Drink in moderation and a little bit is okay. A good tip to stay hydrated is to have a glass of water or non-alcoholic drink in-between glasses or have a break. Make sure to eat as well! Stay safe this holiday season and enjoy your time with friends and family.

Review: Chef Series from Wine Selectors

The lovely people at Wine Selectors sent me a mixed box of wine. Three white and three red. I must say I am partial to a nice glass of wine and getting a box sent to me was just wonderful. I love presents in the mail, don’t you?

I was also blown away that it came with tasting notes and recipes. Also with suggestions of what bottle to have for each meal. It certainly has taken the guesswork out of mealtime.

Wine Selectors Chef Series

I was sent a box of the Wine Selectors Chef Series below are the ones that I received:

• Alastair McLeod Riesling 2010
• Ben O’Donoghue Pinot Gris 2011
• Ian Parmenter Gewürztraminer 2012
• Ben O’Donoghue Shiraz 2011
• Frank Camorra Tempranillo 2010
• Grossi Barbera 2011

The Shiraz

The wines so far have been so yummy and matched the meal that I have cooked, and also for one that I did not. Ben O’Donoghue’s Shiraz melted in our mouths and of course, my hubby had to help me taste them. He has also loved all the fancy cooking this week. The Shiraz was rich in flavour and did not taste like it was only made in 2011 it had strength beyond its age. Very impressed with this drop of wine.

The recipe card for Ben O’Donoghue’s Shiraz 2011 was “Grilled Miso Cured Wagu Beef

I did add some beans to the meal. I know it was not on the recipe card. So if you are this way inclined too, it worked a treat!

Picking a wine for your meal

Have you thought about what do I cook for dinner? What wine would go with what meal? Well, the lovely suggestions from wine selectors have taken the guesswork out of it all. Search Wine Selectors for recipes and get suggestions for wine suggestions for your meal.

The Riesling

I wanted to try out a meal not from the recipe cards to see if the wines matched and it did. I cooked chicken parcels wrapped in bacon & stuffed with pumpkin, feta & spinach. I teamed this dinner up with Alastair McLeod Riesling 2010, and again the wine really matched the meal and was finished off between hubby and me.

The Riesling was fruity and crisp, just right for these hot days and nights we have been having.

Another fancy meal, hubby is getting used to this. Chicken parcels wrapped in bacon & stuffed with pumpkin, fetta & spinach. Wine is Alastair McLeod Riesling 2010
