Protecting Ourselves Against COVID-19

I know everyone is worried about getting COVID-19 (Coronavirus), but as we are out the city we thought that it might not come here or at the very least we would have limited exposure.

This has all changed as of last night. YEP, the new world order is making this thing very real. I did know that it was real, people have died, been very ill and have been isolated to make sure they are okay and will not infect others. SO yes, it is very real and has had disastrous consequences for businesses, the economy and individuals all over the world.

It is just horrible and I really wish that the scientists would magically find a cure in record time.

We’ve had stupid panic buying of toilet paper and one that I thought was silly until I realised our family might end up stuck at home. It could be a possibility.

And at 1 am this morning when I learnt that kids might be at home in the near future as a precaution I thought, “We don’t have enough of anything! and then said to hubby we need to buy toilet paper! This elicited a huge giggle and don’t be silly from him.”

Last night we had the local high school close, the music festival has been cancelled and the kid’s basketball has also been cancelled due to the possibility of the infection spreading.

Today the kids have gone to school and care due to no issue happening at either school. I just hope that they all remain healthy. One scenario that is worrying is if the kids do get sick and bring it back for mummy and daddy to get too.  We really don’t need to be sick and lockdown at the moment!

Today is all about tidying the house, sorting things out and seeing if we can get some order into our chaos at the moment. I am sitting here still needing to sort out my morning coffee and then to start the process of cleaning a fish tank…yes a process I am not going to enjoy but needs to be done.

I hope that the kids will be okay at school. I hope that no one at school is sick, I hope that no one we come into contact with is ill, it is just a horrible feeling of thinking that you don’t to leave the house but there are times that you have to.

We’ve given the kids a talk about washing their hands and not touching their face (plus not putting fingers into mouths), we have explained that whatever they touch or do they need to wash their hands. This might be harder with the four-year-old but we will do our best.

Follow these guidelines from WHO (World Health Organisation) to protect yourself against COVID-19 (Coronavirus)

Unvaccinated Kids Not Smart Just Risky

Geez, I thought people already understood that vaccinations help everyone. Vaccinations save lives and help us fight horrible diseases.

As you might have already guessed, I am pro vaccination and hubby and I , and all our children are fully vaccinated. When I was little there were no vaccinations for chicken pox, mumps, measles and some other scary illnesses.

If you were like me and grew up in the 70’s and 80’s you were most likely exposed to chicken pox, mumps and measles. I think I got chicken pox and not sure if I got mumps as my mum doesn’t remember. Now there are vaccines for Chicken Pox, Measles and Mumps…yes these infections shouldn’t be around any more but they are.

Currently there is a massive outbreak of measles in New Zealand.

Pete Evans a chef in Australia has recently come out in support of anti-vaxxer Dr Sherri Tenpenny via his Instagram account.

Evans says that,”unvaccinated kids are smarter”

Well I am not sure that unvaccinated kids are smarter, if their parents don’t vaccinate to protect them from disease they might die and get very ill. I don’t think this is smart do you? Mind you it is not the child choosing this, it is the parents that are deciding for their children.

Dr Tenpenny states that “vaccinating children is part of a conspiracy to have “every single human being on the planet on a minimum of two pharmaceutical drugs for life, beginning in childhood.”

I say, that without being vaccinated it means you are at risk of very serious illness and possibly dying so getting a needle to help you not get sick is a small price to pay.

Oh also if you get vaccinated you are protecting everyone, not just your family. It is

Personally I would not listen or follow Pete Evan’s ideas on health.

Some of his recent thoughts have been:

  • Said Sunscreen was poisonous
  • Said that vegan women would struggle to reproduce
  • According to Evans a Paleo Diet could prevent Autism
  • Knows more than the WHO (World Health Organsiation) when he said that eating too much processed meat and red meat won’t give you cancer
  • Creating a Paleo Cookbook for babies and toddlers – It had “a recipe for infant formula containing bone broth and liver – which doctors feared would be potentially life-threatening if given to young babies.” (https://www.peta.org.au/news/pete-evans-total-dumbass/)

“The original DIY bone broth formula recipe was independently analysed and found to be unsafe. It could “cause permanent damage and possibly result in death,” experts concluded. Among problems were that it contained 749% as much vitamin A as breastmilk, 2326% as much vitamin B12, 1067% as much iron, 879% as much salt and 220% as much protein. Young babies’ immune and digestive systems cannot process very high levels of these nutrients.” (https://www.nowtolove.com.au/health/diet-nutrition/why-pete-evans-is-wrong-about-paleo-baby-formula-12805)

However in the world we live in science allows us to not suffer these horrible infections anymore. Simple, get immunised and you are better protected.

Vaccinations are safe and protect everyone. The more people get immunised the better everyone in the world will be. It’s called herd immunity,  the more people get immunised less of the infection and disease will be about, and therefore will hopefully go away.

However, if a percentage of the population don’t get immunised and get sick,  it spreads to others that have a lowered immunity or haven’t been able to get their immunistations due to age or that they might be unwell at the time.

The more people get immunised the healthier our communities will be.  Learn more at immunistionfacts.gov.au

Vaccines and Autism

“The 1998 study which raised concerns about a possible link between measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine and autism was later found to be seriously flawed and fraudulent. The paper was subsequently retracted by the journal that published it. Unfortunately, its publication set off a panic that led to dropping immunization rates, and subsequent outbreaks of these diseases. There is no evidence of a link between MMR vaccine and autism or autistic disorders.”  The World Health Organisation  – https://www.who.int/features/qa/84/en/

Penn and Teller about Vaccinations

Personally why would you want to risk the health of your family, we can protect and treat so much now.   Also if your’re vaccinated you can travel to countries with no fear of getting something horrible and possibly dying.

It’s a no brainer to me. Vaccinate to not potentially die or get very ill, easy really!

“Dr Tenpenny compared vaccination to a game of Russian roulette, saying “it could kill you.”

Maybe the lack of immunisation could do the same if you get measles?

The story of Polio – The Vaccine that Changed the World

(Polio is still exists, according to a quick search online Pakistan, Afghanistan and Nigeria are the 3 countries listed as still having this disease.
This does not mean that a person infected with polio can travel elsewhere and infect others with polio)

Close The Immunisation Gap

Alexander is soon to be four months old. Four months means that he will also get his immunisations to keep him safe.

From the 24th to the 30th of April it is World Immunisation Week.

Vaccines don't overwhelm a child's immune system
Vaccines don’t overwhelm a child’s immune system

Did you know…..

“Immunization averts 2 to 3 million deaths annually; however, an additional 1.5 million deaths could be avoided if global vaccination coverage improves. Today, an estimated 18.7 million infants – nearly 1 in 5 children – worldwide are still missing routine immunizations for preventable diseases, such as diphtheria, pertussis and tetanus.” WHO: http://www.who.int/mediacentre/news/releases/2016/world-immunization-week/en/

I believe in vaccinations.

Vaccinations keep the child/you/family and others safe.

We have the technology and ability to prevent illness from some horrible diseases. Why would you not want to protect your family from this? I caught chicken pox and I think mumps as a kid. My children will never have this happen to them due to vaccinations. Some or nearly all of the childhood illness that I contracted as well did my friends you can now prevent.

In the video below this new mum took her little baby to a family function. She did not know that there were children there that weren’t immunised. Melissa’s family were very lucky that their little girl who ended up contracting chicken pox overcame the illness and is happy and healthy. Some don’t have this outcome.

Many people get vaccinated for different reasons. One major reason is if you have kids or look after children for your work. Making sure you are up to date with your immunisations will prevent you from getting sick as well as the kids in your care. To find out more check out this great poster by Better Health Victoria to learn more.

When enough people are immunised it protects the herd (majority of the population). Since immunisations have lessened the herd immunity is in danger. We need to aim for everyone to be immunised worldwide.

Below is a video of Dr Margaret Cooper, she is a polio survivor and talks about her struggle with the disease.

Immunisations protect people who have their immune system comprised, for example cancer patients. Another group are the elderly that might not be able to get the shots so quickly as others, or how about the new baby that has just been born and is not old enough to get their vaccinations yet. It is a nice thing to ensure the health of yourself but it benefits everyone.

I made sure that the twins were vaccinated on time and I’m doing the same for my new little boy. He is all booked in for his four month shots and I make sure that I book this in ahead of time. I like to make sure that the dates work for the doctors appointment, if I cannot get in at one centre I go elsewhere.

Keeping the vaccinations up to date means that the child or you are covered if you come into contact with someone who has chicken pox or say pertussis.

And now for something controversial and hopefully will get you thinking…with a bit of help from Jimmy Kimmel, he sums up my thoughts on immunisations.

Get yourself, your kids, family and friends immunised.
Immunise your children/you on time, every time.
