Women Don’t Take Heart Attacks Seriously

The other day I overheard two older men talking.

They were sitting at the table behind me and were discussing health matters between them and their families.

One thing that one man said really made me think.

He said, “Women don’t take heart attacks seriously”

I was very close to turning around and joining the conversation, but I didn’t. If you know me, this was hard to do as I had a lot to say but I didn’t. Yes, I was very good.

Symptoms of a heart attack in women are different than men.   As a busy woman, mother and person to everyone it is so difficult to keep a check on your health too.

Unexplained fatigue can be a symptom of a heart attack. Might be hard to figure out if you are constantly fatigued as a sleep deprived mum.
Unexplained fatigue can be a symptom of a heart attack. Might be hard to figure out if you are constantly fatigued as a sleep deprived mum.

I really wanted to tell these men that women generally overlook symptoms as something else. Women are busy and try to power on, and therefore end up having a heart attack when they had no idea.

It’s not that women don’t take heart attacks seriously its the fact that they believe they are too young, it will not happen, they have other symptoms and therefore think that there is no way it could be a heart attack.

Suddenly feeling sick and dizzy you might assume that you are getting the flu, need more sugar, should have drunk more water or not skipped lunch. Experiencing a heart attack if you were suddenly nauseous and dizzy would not be something I would entertain, but these are real symptoms.

In fact, more women die of heart attacks than men.

Some symptoms from WebMD that women having a heart attack can experience:

  • Dizziness or nausea
  • Unexplained fatigue or weakness
  • Stomach or abdominal pain
  • Shortness of breath

The Heart Foundation has a list of symptoms for men and women, Check them out to make sure you are aware.

Yes looking after your health to care for others is super important, actually hugely important.  However, mums are usually the last on the list.

Lately, I’ve noticed a few things that I was getting worried about. I made sure to see the doctor, get bloods done, and other things checked.

If you notice anything different please get it checked.

Skin, boobs, lack of vitamins (Being low on vitamin D can make you upset and depressed), diet, oh and get your poo checked to ensure all is good if you notice any difference in your bowel movements.

My tests have come back okay, well the bloods did.

Keep well and look after you.

Make Time for Good Health

I recently attended The Bloggers Brunch and had the opportunity to listen to Frank Caruso speak about his journey and how he has built such a successful business.

If you don’t know who Frank is, he is the man behind Caruso’s Natural Health

Frank explained how he had teachers that thought he was not bright and would not amount to much. He had doubters but he never kept on giving things a go. Frank Caruso’s talk was very motivational and made me think about my journey so far.

I had very similar things happen to me as a child. I was told that I was stupid. I would not be able to do this or that and I should just get an office job and forget about it.

Thank goodness, I was stubborn and did not listen to the doubters. I kept on plodding along and worked towards my goals.

Slowly but surely, I managed to get into the university I was drooling over. I managed to get in as a mature aged student. According to the universities mature age is from 20 years and older. I started my undergraduate degree at UTS (University of Technology, Sydney) when I was 23 years of age.

Frank invested in his health journey and was so passionate about it, it became a hugely successful family business.

Learning about Frank Caruso's tips for success. In grade 3 one of his teachers told him he would never succeed at anything. I was always told that I was never smart enough to finish high school or go to university. I decided they were wrong, I put my head down and bum up and just kept on going. I persisted, I ignored the negatives and kept going. Frank did the same. He ignored the negativity and the people that were not helpful. I finished high school but didn't do well, but this did not stop me. I ended up going to university as a mature age student (this was when I was 23, so not that old really). I have since completed an undergraduate and masters degree. I have created a blog and structured an online space for me and other like minded people. Don't let other people's view of you dictate what you will become! This is one of the key points from Frank's tips. #tipsforsuccess @carusosnaturalhealth #business #bloggers_brunch @kids_business

Hearing Frank talk at The Bloggers Brunch was inspiring and made me think of things I wish to achieve for my business and my family. Frank is contagious regarding motivating people about their dreams and passions.

It got me thinking about my health and wellness after I got home.

Since having kids, I want to make sure I look after myself.  I want to be healthy and active for them, oh and myself as well.

I make sure to have good food, some exercise, rest, relaxation (although sometimes hard with a busy family), and time with the family to just be.

Part of looking after myself means that I make sure to get enough vitamins and minerals that my body will need to lead an active life.

Being a mum is tough job. You cannot afford to get sick (no sick leave, no sick pay, or nanny to come help) so being as healthy as you can is very important.

It is even tougher when kids get sick and you are the one that cares for them, dodging coughs, and snotty noses is next to impossible and therefore mum is the next one on the list to get ill.

Since having my last child, Alexander, I have noticed that my hair has been very dry and brittle. I don’t remember this happening after the twins. Maybe it did and I was so tired I never realised.

I mentioned this to the team at Caruso’s Natural Health and they recommended I try Super Collagen Builder for Hair, Skin and Nails.

I’ve been using the Super Collagen Builder for the last month and it seems to have made a difference to my hair. It appears softer, and not as dry.  I will be continuing using this product to see what it does over a longer period.

I do eat quite well but like to ensure I’m getting the right vitamins and minerals with a multivitamin. I’ve been taking Women’s Super Multi. This is a multivitamin tailored for women on the go.

I take one multivitamin a day. I’m sure this has helped me feel better and allowed me to keep going when the kids have been unwell. This multivitamin helps you for all round health, heart, immune support, bone health, energy, stress and loads more.

Meeting Frank has made me see that I too can achieve what I set out to do. I already knew that health was extremely important and as a mum looking after myself is a top priority.

Not only will being healthy in my older years ensure that I am here for my kids but will allow me to lead a happier, and better life.

The Power of Bee Pollen

While on holiday at the Gold Coast hubby took the twins to SUPERBEE HONEYWORLD at CURRUMBIN. This kept the girls occupied on one of the days I was at Problogger. During the trip there, hubby and the girls learned about how bees make honey and the powers that bee pollen possess.

Before we got on our plane home hubby wanted to purchase some more honey and give the bee pollen a go. You can purchase granules like the one in the below photo or you can have them in capsules. A man at the shop recommended we grind it with a pestle and mortar to make it a fine dust, then mix it into your cereal in the morning. This way you don’t notice it and it gives a nice honey taste. If you don’t grind it down to a fine dust, it is not that pleasant at all.  So remember to do this and you can enjoy it and reap the rewards.

Bee Pollen
Bee Pollen

Bee Pollen is considered to be nature’s most nourishing foods. It is a powerful antioxidant and has multitude of vitamins. It is are” rich in proteins, free amino acids, vitamins, including B-complex, and folic acid.”(http://www.mercola.com/article/diet/bee_pollen.htm)

Bee Pollen is said to help the following issues:

  • Digestion and Circulation
  • Thought to burn fat faster and increases the calories burnt (I had no idea about that one)
  • Boosts your immune system
  • Has been help for people to relieve diabetic symptoms & can help elsewhere. According to http://www.envirobee.com/beepollen.htm, it states that “Doctors have obtained good results. In one test, 32g of pollen daily taken for 2 weeks lowered the amount of sugar in 1 liter of urine by 41.8 g. Dr. Chauvia and Dr. Lenorm and say that pollen also contains an antibiotic similar to penicillin and is able to inhibit the development of some microorganisms such as Salmonella.”

The extract below is from http://www.mercola.com/article/diet/bee_pollen.htm and it gives a great break down on why Bee P0llen is considered a super food.

“Pollen is considered an energy and nutritive tonic in Chinese medicine. Cultures throughout the world use it in a surprising number of applications: for improving endurance and vitality, extending longevity, aiding recovery from chronic illness, adding weight during convalescence, reducing cravings and addictions, regulating the intestines, building new blood, preventing infectious diseases such as the cold and flue (it has antibiotic type properties), and helping overcome retardation and other developmental problems in children. It is thought to protect against radiation and to have anti-cancer qualities.”

According to Wikipedia:

“Bee pollen is safe. It should not be taken if you have pollen allergies. The side effects are usually shortness of breath, hives, swelling, and anaphylaxis. Herbalists recommend bee pollen to enhance athletic performance or to ameliorate the effects of chemotherapy.”

We chose the granules over the capsules as we believed that it was a better purchase, but I can see the merit in getting capsules as all the hard work is done and you just have to take them.  I have found that I have more energy, and not sure that it is due to the bee pollen but want to give it a good go.

Now the bee pollen is mixed in and soon to add my fruit

Now ready to eat. YUM!

Of course if you have a pollen allergy this might not be a good idea and something to avoid. However if you would like to give it a go, why not. You can buy online with the SUPERBEE HONEYWORLD at CURRUMBIN.  I am not paid for this post, I was just taken with it and thought I would share.

Have you added anything to your diet that you think has worked well? What has it been? Was it not something that was added? Or something that you have stopped eating or drinking that has been the big win for you? Let us know. Send in your comments.

Placenta for energy anyone?

In the news recently was a report stating that actress January Jones has eaten her own placenta, well actually via capsules not actually eaten.  Jones was saying how she did not know if it would work but was willing to give it a try. I have heard of this, most animals do this although not a lot of humans do.

The actress says that she has had so much energy and the reason behind the energy is eating well, vitamins and placenta capsulation. I personally think it all makes sense. The placenta was the life force for the baby or babies in my case.  I just don’t know if I can do the eating part, maybe if someone did the placenta capsulation I might have been oaky with it, and I did not see it or the preparation and just got the capsules.  I know I am a wuss.

After the birth as you all know you have to wait for the placenta to deliver, once mine arrived my husband was very curious about it. He told me it was massive and I really would not want to look at it, as it was weird looking. According to James it looked like a Doctor Who prop. After this I had to look, he was right, it looked like it had tentacles everywhere.

I honestly was never that type of mother or person who was going to eat her own placenta and for that matter take it to someone to make it into capsules. Maybe I should of, it does hold all the nutrients that the baby needed and your body could use after the whole experience of childbirth.  Maybe if I had done that, I would have had more energy in the first year or so. However, dealing with two babies at once would drain anyone I would have thought.

I think if it works for you, why not.  On the placenta benefits info site they list all the health benefits, maybe we need to get over the yucky idea of it and give it a go.  If there was a service at the hospital to turn the placenta into capsules and you just paid a small fee for this privilege, then I think more women might give it a go.  Personally it is the yuck factor and the issue that the placenta appears like a big disgusting blob (I do know that it is wonderful and miraculous, but not that good looking), having no contact with the yucky thing, would make sure that I would be more interested to try.

Did you eat your placenta or have it in capsules? Did it help with energy levels, and other things?  Did you decide to not eat it and bury it under a tree in honour of the birth? My friends mum did that after her baby brother was born. What are your thoughts about the hospital providing the service for the capsules? Send in your comments.
