20 Reasons Why Bananas Are Great For Mum and Little Ones

From the moment you realise you are going to be a mum until your child is getting dressed all by themselves, Australian bananas are the ideal addition to both your diets. Accredited Practising Dietitian, Glenn Cardwell provides 20 reasons why:

Pregnant & New Mums

Pregnancy is the time to pamper your body and understand the impact of your eating – especially since you are dining for two. One way to give your diet a pinch of powerful production is to add nature’s non-stop energy snack, bananas.

Bananas are excellent when you are expecting because they not only contain essential nutrients for the healthy growth of your bundle of joy, but they are also good for managing morning sickness and constipation that sometimes come with having a baby on board.

  1. Relieving Your Heaving

Thankfully, morning sickness usually only lasts the first trimester but that doesn’t make it fun (however if you are like me pregnancy makes you sick all the time. Bananas have been helping me feel better for breakfast now that I’m in my 3rd trimester.) Eating dry crackers, toast or a piece of fruit like a banana in the morning before you get out of bed, and having small snacks frequently through the day can help as it keeps the stomach from being empty, which can make you feel unwell. Avoiding spicy and fatty foods can sometimes help ease nausea as well.

  1. Reduce Constipation

As the muscles in the intestine lose some of their tone during pregnancy, foods pass more slowly through the gut. The pressure of the baby on the mother’s intestines can also slow down the passage of food and waste, resulting in constipation. The solution is copious amounts of fibre, which bananas provide aplenty, fluids and physical activity. Although the banana is an obvious choice to boost your fibre intake, other fruits, wholegrain breads and cereals and legumes are good options.

  1. Energy to Burn

Bananas are an excellent source of carbohydrate energy in the form of natural sugars and starch. It’s no wonder they call it nature’s non-stop energy snack.

  1. Protect Against Spinal Cord Defects

Folate is vital in the development of a baby’s spinal cord in the womb. It is so critical that the vitamin is recommended to women considering pregnancy. An overwhelming body of evidence has linked folate deficiency in early pregnancy to increased risk of neural tube defects, most commonly known as spina bifida, in infants. One banana will provide about 10 per cent of your folate needs each day.

  1. Form Strong Gums

Extra Ascorbic acid (vitamin C) is required for forming new blood vessels, skin, gums, and other tissues, and even bones. One or two bananas each day will provide valuable vitamin C, as will other fruit, fruit juice and salad vegetables.

  1. Absorb Your Iron

In order for a healthy amount of oxygen to reach your baby via the placenta, your body (and your blood) needs about 50 per cent more iron than usual. Although a banana provides only a little iron, its vitamin C greatly helps with iron absorption from other foods. Iron supplements (usually with folate) are commonly recommended during pregnancy.

  1. Strengthen Bones and Teeth

Calcium is required for strong bones and teeth, and in nerve and muscle growth, both for mum and baby. An extra 300mg of calcium is required for pregnant teenagers as they are still growing as well as nourishing the baby. The perfect way to bump up calcium intake is to regularly drink smoothies – simply blend a banana with a cup of high calcium milk.

  1. Help Babies Grow

Extra protein is needed during pregnancy and breastfeeding to support the growth of the baby, and the production of breast milk. This is easily achieved by adding a delicious banana smoothie (a medium banana and 200mL of milk) to your daily diet.

  1. Boost Your B6

Uniquely, bananas are one of the richest fruit sources for vitamin B6. This powerful vitamin is important for cardiovascular, digestive, immune, muscular, and nervous system function. New or expecting mothers’ daily need for it increases by almost 50 per cent, making bananas a great solution.

  1. Baby’s First Food

After six months, your baby’s exclusive exposure to the bottle or the boob is coming to an end. Their digestive system is now ready for solid food. Here are a few reasons why Australian Bananas make the ideal first food:

  1. Essential Nutrients

Bananas are soft, easy for an infant to tackle, and rich with essential nutrients, including vitamin B6, folate, vitamin C, magnesium, potassium, and natural sugars for energy.

  • Half a medium banana will give an infant:
    • Folate: 33 per cent of their daily needs
    • Magnesium: 25 per cent of their daily needs
    • Vitamin B6: 50 per cent of their daily needs
  1. Familiar Consistency

Mash a banana with breast milk or formula when introducing solids. It is more likely to be accepted quickly as a new food.

  1. Made For Tiny Hands

The banana is the ideal finger food. It can be nibbled, chewed, sucked and squished. Give your child a small amount at a time.

  1. Easing Teething

During teething, a cool or frozen banana can help relieve the pain of a tooth coming through.

Nature’s Long-Lasting Energy Snack For Toddlers

Australian bananas make the ideal snack for toddlers. Whether they are just starting to walk or speaking in sentences, children at this age need one fruit serve each day. This might be a medium banana, or half a banana and half of another fruit. While bananas are very popular with young children, it is also important to introduce them to other fruits, especially once they start getting teeth towards the end of their first year of life.

  1. Great Source of Carbohydrates for Energy

To fuel the activity of a toddler, they need carbohydrates at each meal. Bananas are an excellent source of the nutrient in the form of natural sugars and starch.

  1. Protein for Growth

Normal growth needs protein to help produce new cells. A small banana smoothie (150 mL milk and a half banana) as a snack or meal is an excellent source of both protein and calcium.

  1. Vitamin B6 for Blood Health

This vitamin is needed for making red blood cells, and carrying nerve impulses. A small banana will provide about one third of their B6 needs for the day.

Banana Guacamole for Kids

  1. Folate for Growth and Brain Health

The B vitamin folate is needed for proper growth and development. Half a banana will give a toddler about 15 per cent of their folate needs each day.

  1. Fibre for Digestive Health

Bananas are a great-tasting source of fibre, so even a small serving a day for a young child will help keep them regular.

  1. Convenience

Toddlers only want to eat when they are hungry, and they may not want to finish everything on their plate, making snacks like bananas so convenient. You can simply cut them in two and save half in the refrigerator in plastic wrap for later.

I love toys that kids can be creative with, well, in this case, its an activity book that will keep toddlers entertained for hours.

Susanna Polycarpou is a mum of two and creator of the Rainbow Patch Playbook

The idea came to Susanna after she saw how much time her eldest daughter Alexandra (5) was spent in front of a screen.

Now her two kids, Alexandra and Rocco don’t want to play with the iPad and favour the Rainbow Patch PlayBook.

The Rainbow Patch PlayBook comes with its own tote bag to allow you to take it anywhere and perfect for the holidays.

The Rainbow Patch PlayBook fits easily into the tote bag and allows you to take it with you everywhere.

Tips to help with Night Terrors

Night terrors are horrible.

In fact, they are just a pain in the bum. There is screaming, more screaming and the noise just gets so loud!

Not only is there a lot of yelling and screaming from the child who is having the night terror but there is also hitting, kicking and trying to do things that might hurt the terrorised child.

Being overtired can lead to night terrors. I do find that if my little boy hasn't slept he does have a night terror.
Being overtired can lead to night terrors. I do find that if my little boy hasn’t slept he does have a night terror.

My little boy has suffered from night terrors and they seem to happen every now and then. However, for the past week (starting from mid-week last week and to this week) he has had a few nearly every night.

He was not well and did have a fever for a few days so I put it down to the fact that he wasn’t well. I have even picked him up earlier from childcare to help with the lead up to bedtime and allow for quiet time. This plan didn’t work and therefore I was up again all night dealing with an upset kid.

I’ve had “NO” Screamed at me so loud I think that I have lost part of my hearing.

So what is a night terror?

A night terror is when a child wakes violently after a few hours of going to bed and is still asleep although appears to be awake.

Night terrors usually happen to preschool and primary school kids, and in time they grow out of it.

It is hard to calm the child when they are having a night terror due to the fact that they don’t know you are there and are dealing with something upsetting.

Night terrors are not nightmares. “Night terrors are part of a group of Non-REM sleep arousal disorders or parasomnias. Your child may remember being frightened, but without specific dream content and will not usually remember the night terror the next morning.” (https://www.schn.health.nsw.gov.au/fact-sheets/nightmares-and-night-terrors)

What are the signs of a night terror?

  • Seems awake but is still asleep, don’t try and wake the child. If you do the night terror will last longer.
  • Wakes screaming
  • Thrashes around, hits, kicks and tries to hurt you if you are there.
  • Throws things
  • Tries to hurt themselves
  • Yelling things that make no sense. My little boy just yells, NO!, and sometimes other things about what he doesn’t want to do or wants to do.
  • Sometimes the child having the terror has their eyes open but is not awake.
  • Sweaty and breathes heavy

One thing that was screamed at me while Alexander was having a terror was, “I WANT A T-REX!” I then said, of course, we can get you a T-Rex, and then he took a deep breath and rolled over and went back to sleep.

I must say that I am glad that he has no memory of me agreeing to get him a T-Rex. Honestly, we don’t have room for a T-Rex and currently struggle with the items we wish to keep.

Super glad my little boy has no memory of me saying he can have a T-Rex.
Super glad my little boy has no memory of me saying he can have a T-Rex.

Things I have noticed that might mean a night terror could occur:

  • Overtired
  • Sick
  • Fever
  • Upset/Worried
  • Teething
Sleeping is what all tired little kids should be doing. Yes, I'm hoping that I get to have a goods nights sleep soon.
Sleeping is what all tired little kids should be doing. Yes, I’m hoping that I get to have a goods nights sleep soon.

What can you do while your child is having a night terror?

Since your child will be not asleep or awake they will not understand you are there and could lash out. Stay in the room and make that your little one will not hurt themselves, for example falling out of bed, hitting their head on the corner or end of the bed or possibly tip items onto themselves.

If your child is talking try and talk to them, however, if they become more agitated and scream more loudly when you talk (this happens with my little boy) just sit and be quiet and say some calming things every now and then.

What I say to my child while he is screaming and having a night terror: It’s okay you are safe, you are in bed and all right, Mummy is here, calm down, it’s okay.

Once he calms down and the screaming, kicking, and hitting subsides I try and let him know I am there and sometimes he wakes up and other times he rolls over and goes back to bed.

If he does wake he gets some soothing cuddles with mummy and a drink and then goes back to bed.

Oh and if your little one is overheated that could bring on a terror too!

Make sure to not touch your child as this can agitate them and make the terror worse and last longer. If the child is going to hurt themselves or you need to move them this is fine as it is an emergency but might cause the child to freak out a bit. Once calmer you can touch and reassure the child.

Night time and crossing fingers and toes it is a night free of night terrors.
Night time and crossing fingers and toes it is a night free of night terrors.

Things I am doing to trying to calm down before bedtime

  • Quiet time
  • Bath to relax my little boy
  • Time in his room reading books and just relaxing before he goes to bed
  • Cuddles
  • Stopping his TV shows and making sure we have some playtime with his LEGO or cars.

Sites that can help if your child is having night terrors too:

Do your kids have night terrors or if they are older did they suffer them too? Have they outgrown them? They are common in preschool and primary aged children but after primary many outgrow night terrors.

I hope my little boy outgrows them soon as they are exhausting for both mummy and my little boy.

NAN A2 Toddler Milk Drink for Out of this World Adventures

Toddlers are busy creatures; they cannot keep still or stop moving.

My little toddler is having so much fun with his weird and wonderful adventures, it is hard to keep up!

Playing superheroes at the park with Super Bark the Dog!
Playing superheroes at the park with Super Bark the Dog!

He has been to space and loves being a superhero.

Mummy has also taken various trips to the moon and other planets too!  We are frequent visitors to outer space, maybe there is a frequent flyer card for travelling so far? I’m sure I’ve collected millions of frequent flyer points by now!

On top of his normal diet, one thing that allows my little space explorer to keep on going is the energy he gets from his NAN A2 toddler milk drink.

NAN A2 toddler milk has some essential vitamins and minerals to help support my adventurous toddler needs, and lately, he has needed extra due to a growth spurt.

Having a cool drink of NAN A2 Stage 3 Toddler Milk
Having a cool drink of NAN A2 Stage 3 Toddler Milk

As you can see Alexander has been super busy with his cars, at the park and going to space with mummy.

My little boy has been super hungry and has wanted more of everything! Giving him a sippy cup of his NAN A2 toddler milk drink means that he is getting some essential vitamins and minerals he needs.

The toddler milk helps me as a mummy to make sure he gets what he needs. I find that he sometimes eats lots and then goes for days not eating anything at all.  NAN A2 Stage 3 shouldn’t replace a varied diet. It’s specially formulated for toddler’s that may not be getting all the energy and nutrients they need from their food.

Alexander can't go anywhere without his cars and Bark the Dog. Playing cars on the driveway is hours of fun!

If you also have an active space explorer or superhero, I would recommend NAN A2 toddler milk to help them get any extra energy they might need for more amazing adventures.

Nestlé NAN Toddler Milk for Active kids

This post is in collaboration with NAN A2 Stage 3 Toddler Milk. The fab team at NAN sent Alexander some NAN A2 Stage 3 Toddler Milk to test out. Read on to find out how Alexander is enjoying it and more about the new toddler milk.

I’m sure I am not the only one that has a super active toddler. In fact my twins were (are) the same!

Alexander loves slippery dips and even better with cars as well.
Alexander loves slippery dips and even better with cars as well.

Toddlers are such busy little people. Constantly investigating, playing, learning, having fun, running, touching everything and anything, plus getting into mischief is all in a toddler’s job description.

Alexander playing soccer at 1 year and 7 months

Lately Alexander has been full of beans and racing around with gusto. I recently took all the kids to the pool and it was a crazy outing to say the least.
The twins were jumping into the pool at the deep end, and of course Alexander wanted to do what his big sisters were doing.  He is fearless and jumps off the edge of the pool with a big run up. I was in the water waiting to catch him as he cannot swim yet.

This week I’ve been giving Alexander NAN A2 Toddler Milk.

More About Nestlé NAN A2 Stage 3 Toddler Milk

• NAN A2 Stage 3 is a premium milk drink, designed for toddlers from 1 year of age. NAN A2 Stage 3 provides your child with a unique and complementary combination of high quality ingredients and important essential nutrients, such as iron and zinc, to support growth and development.
Note: NAN A2 Toddler Milk is not a substitute for a varied diet, the toddler milk is an addition to make sure that your little one is getting all he/she needs in their diet.

DID YOU KNOW?

NAN A2 Stage 3 is a new product that launched in Australia in October 2018.

Nestlé NAN A2 Stage 3 Toddler Milk
Nestlé NAN A2 Stage 3 Toddler Milk

• NAN A2 Stage 3 contains a unique blend of whey and casein, where the A2 β-casein protein comes from milk of special cows, selected to exclusively contain the A2 β-casein protein. Proteins including A2 β-casein protein help support growth and development in young children.

• You can purchase NAN A2 Stage 3 from Coles in store or online, and it is also available at the Nestlé website.

• The RRP for Nestlé NAN A2 Stage 3 is $29/tin

When Alexander is fussy and not eating as much I wonder if he is getting the right nutrients he needs.

Alexander having a cool drink of NAN A2 Toddler Milk
Alexander having a cool drink of NAN A2 Toddler Milk

Growth spurts come at any time, so I top up with toddler milk to ensure Alexander has adequate vitamins & minerals to support growth and development.

I have already noticed that he must have had a growth spurt as he is now taller and able to reach for more things on the kitchen counter tops.

Having NAN A2 Toddler Milk is a great back up if you are worried your little one is not getting all the essentials they need.   Kids seem to get distracted and focus more on play than eating or drinking. I find that Alexander is so involved when playing outdoors that any food or drink that I give him needs to be nutritionally high.

Cooling down with NAN A2 Toddler Milk while spending time with big sister and watching his favourite film, Cars!
Cooling down with NAN A2 Toddler Milk while spending time with big sister and watching his favourite film, Cars!

I am sure you have packed lunches to find that no one ate them due to being so busy playing…I know I have and it is rather frustrating that all the goodness ends up going yucky in the lunch box.

With the weather getting hotter, sometimes a cool milk drink is all that is needed in between meals.

I don’t know about you, but if my little boy is sick or teething he goes off food all together. During these times he favours milk.  It doesn’t last long but for a few days he just likes to drink milk.

It is all taken with cuddles from mummy to make him feel better, while watching Disney Cars or the Minions Movies (these films are on constant repeat at our place!)

NAN A2 Stage 3 Toddler Milk is perfect for these moments as it has added vitamins and minerals to support growth and development.

What Does Alexander Think of NAN A2 Stage 3 Toddler Milk?

• He loves it, drinks it all and even asks for more!
• At first, mummy thought that he might take a while to adjust if it tasted different from his other milk. However, this never happened, and it was instant yummy milk from Alexander’s perspective.
• Alexander has been jumping, racing around, bouncing off the walls, and racing around more than usual.

Alexander loves helping daddy with the lawn. He’s so busy running around it is hard to keep up.

A HUGE thank you to NAN for sending Alexander and I the new NAN A2 Stage 3 Toddler Milk.

If you are wanting a toddler milk that gives your little one extra vitamins & minerals they need, I’m sure you and your toddler/s will love NAN A2 Stage 3 Toddler Milk as much as we do.

LUSH FUN Soap For Bath-stronauts & Earthlings

LUSH sent me a box of goodies. Check out what I received.

As you saw in the video above I received three tubs of LUSH’s New FUN soap. The kids and I call it play dough soap due to the fact that you can create creatures/creations out of it before it melts away in the bath or the shower.

  • Monsters and Aliens FUN – scented with spicy black pepper oil and comforting Fair Trade vanilla absolute.
  • Rainbow FUN – lime and grapefruit oils will help cleanse skin, while fair trade vanilla soothes and softens.
  • Sea Monster FUN – relaxing lavender oil and bright, citrusy lime oil.
LUSH FUN Soap - All new and so much fun! Create monsters, aliens, and even rainbows. Your kids will be begging you for a bath with this soap.
LUSH FUN Soap – All new and so much fun! Create monsters, aliens, and even rainbows. Your kids will be begging you for a bath with this soap.

Did You Know….

“2.5% of sales from every bar of FUN is contributed to the FUNd, a LUSH initiative which supports charities in Fukushima, Japan that create safe places for children to play outside.”

This version of FUN soap lets kids create monsters, aliens and even rainbows! Yes anything is possible with this brilliantly coloured and of course amazing smelling soap.

You can use this soap in a bath or the shower. Yes how brilliant to not have to have a bath. I have used it in the shower and I love the fact that it leaves my body smelling so wonderful. It is like I have put on an exotic perfume that also manages to perfume my clothes and the baby… I have noticed that when I have picked him up afterwards he now smells like FUN soap too!

LUSHFUNmonsters_web LUSHFUNmonsters1_web

FUN Soap is a 4-in-1 bubbler

  • Use as a soap
  • Shampoo
  • Bubble bar
  • Or malleable toy

The kids had a ball and made aliens in the bath. The FUN soap even creates so many bubbles, no need to add bubble bath mixture as well. Just use FUN soap.

Taking FUN Soap away with you is hassle free. It is not going to leak from the container as it is solid. After you use a little bit of it you can put the remainder back in the tub to use later. It is perfect for that trip away.

Have you seen the new FUN soap from LUSH? We loved it before but this has gone the extra mile.   The girls love the bright colours, the fact that you can make weird creatures with the soap and also that they end up smelling amazing BUT the real fabulous thing that the twins loved was the fact that the bath turned a great purple colour.

On the side of the pots you have suggestions for what you can make. This is a great visual tool for kids and to help the creative process.

The new tubs are great and if you return 5 clean full sized LUSH pots or tubes you get one fresh mask free. What a great way to recycle and also get a freebie as well.

An alien created by one of the girls. Spooky looking and surrounded by bubbles!
An alien created by one of the girls. Spooky looking and surrounded by bubbles!

LUSH is one of my favourite stores and the one thing that appeals is their imagination. Making things fun for all not just kids is what makes you go back again and again.

I do have my much cherished soaps which is the Honey I Washed The Kids Soap. It is a soap that just oozes of honey, it is so creamy and I’m sure is great for my skin. I also adore Sea Vegetable Soap as it reminds me of being on the beach. It is just like you have had a dip in the ocean as it captures all the nice smells of the seaside and leaves you invigorated.

The girls are now trying to organise their next bath. They want to use the next tub of LUSH FUN so they can create more creatures and weird colours in the water. OH and I suppose get clean at the same time.

Have your kids tried LUSH’s FUN soap? What do you think of the new improved version of FUN soap? Do they love it?  Or do you use it too? Let us know.

Disclaimer: LUSH sent me some goodies to try. I loved them so much that I had to tell you all about them, I love sharing great products and new things with my readers.

Panadol’s Online Resources for Parents

As a mother to twin girls and a little boy I want to ensure that all my kids are healthy and well. I’m sure if you are a parent or help care for kids that would be what you would like too. However there are times when everyone gets sick. One child might have a cold, a fever, the flu or if it was like our ongoing saga with tonsillitis it effected both kids until they were removed (the girls have been well aside from the common cold and illness since the removal of their tonsils.)

Shelley Craft, Buddy Bear, myself (Suzanne), the girls and our little boy. What fun the kids had, although the baby was teething and still is. (He cheered up once he got some Children's Panadol to make him feel better)
Shelley Craft, Buddy Bear, myself (Suzanne), the girls and our little boy. What fun the kids had, although the baby was teething and still is. (He cheered up once he got some Children’s Panadol to make him feel better)

When your little ones get sick you do your best to make them feel better. It could be cuddles, songs, yummy food, and favourite shows and of course some medicine to help your kids feel more like themselves and allow the body to get better, rest is best so that you can be well.

No matter how simple or common the sickness is you cannot help but worry about your children. When my kids are sick I am worried about them all the time.

Last Thursday the kids and I went to learn about Children’s Panadol (The kids were excited to meet Shelley Craft. Yes I watch The Block and therefore so do the kids) great new online resources to help parents care for sick kids and to also alleviate the anxiety that can go with sickness.

Shelley Craft from the Block and Dr Kimberley O’Brien who is the founder of Quirky Kid Clinic and also an expert in child development and mental health. Both Shelley Craft and Dr O’Brien spoke about how to have planning strategies to help parents deal with stress and anxiety when children get ill as it can be HUGE help for parents and children as well.

This talk was in response to a “new global survey of parents, including Australians, suggests that parents manage day to day mishaps and mistakes calmly, but still get stressed about the important things like helping their children through illness”

“71% of Australian parents fell anxious about fever/temperature and 66% feel anxious about their child’s pain”

Children’s Panadol have created the following tools to help support parents in managing their child’s health:

  1. Buddy Bear is an interactive animated website that allows parents to entertain children when they are sick. It is a good idea to create the different files before you need them as you can save them to your device. Once you are on the site you are asked if your child is a boy/girl. Then fill in age, email and add photo and your video will be emailed to you when it is ready. Get organised and download a few so you have them ready.
While your child is watching Buddy Bear you can get the dosage of Children’s Panadol correct and not be so flustered and anxious.

  1. The First Five Years Book – This fabulous resource is written by child health nurses to help parents with practical tips and tricks to help them understand the ups and downs from birth to 5 years old, help you enjoy being a parent, learn about major milestones, understand activities that your baby might be doing. You can read it online or download it.
  2. Bub Tracker App – This is a FREE App that helps new parents with advice on dosage for medicines, feeding tracker, feeding log and much more.“Parents do not sweat the small stuff, but worry more about the illness cause, recovery and prevention – especially mothers”
Children's Panadol Bub Tracker App - Great guide for parents

I hate it when kids are sick. I wish I could make it all go away.  I also hate when I get sick, yes if kids get ill, I end up sick too! Perils of motherhood.

The tools from Panadol are a HUGE help to make it a little easier on parents and also kids. I have downloaded some of buddy bear’s interactive videos in preparation for Alexander.

Dr Kimberley O’Brien has 5 tips to help manage anxiety and soothe your sick child/children:

  1. Make a Plan. Having a plan removes second guessing yourself and the worry. Make sure that you include distraction and calming tools if medication is required.
  2. Know your tools. Have a favourite toy/book/game to help comfort your child. A personalised DVD that the child will be happy to watch would be of great help.
  3. Empathise. Try and see the situation from your child’s point of view and this can give you some insight into their behaviour.
  4. Do familiar things. If you can make sure you stick to your regular family routine. This will create a sense of normality at home and allow everyone to be more relaxed.
  5. Manage your anxiety. Call on your support network for help. You need a break if you are the only one caring for a sick child, a break will allow you to increase your quality of care and not get burnt out in the process.

“They are less concerned with diet, medication usage or what they are doing wrong – though parents of younger children worry more.”

Perhaps unsurprisingly parents of children aged 6-12 are not as ‘extremely ’anxious”

Teething and very upset. Mummy cuddles are very helpful. Photo taken in a darken room due to sleeping baby. Yes did not want to wake him.

What are your thoughts on making a plan to be ready for sick kids? Well you are not planning on having sick kids, just how to deal with it.

I love the Buddy Bear videos and the bear is so magical to watch. You could sit for hours just being amazed at how cute and wonderful the bear is. Kids will love this as much as adults do. Give it a go, download and save some videos just in case you need them. Also check out the other online resources from Children’s Panadol.

Disclaimer: I went along to the media briefing about Children’s Panadol to learn ways parents can be less anxious and to hear about techniques that can help children when sick. I have had many times when the twins were ill, they then got me ill and now with a baby it will all happen again (Currently Alexander has a cold and is also teething. Joyousness it is not!). I think that the online resources that Children’s Panadol showcased are excellent, not only are they FREE, they are highly informative as well. Thanks to Children’s Panadol for the invite and allowing the kids and I to learn more about your online tools.

Help Little Tummies with Oli6 Dairy Goat Formula

Brought to you by Nuffnang and Oli6

Have you got a baby or toddler that has digestive issues? Reflux, allergies or an intolerance to cow’s milk maybe? Are you finding it difficult if you are not breastfeeding anymore?

I could only breastfeed my third child for the first three months (I also got mastitis and was very ill. It came back about three times and complicated the issue with breastfeeding) and we did supplement with formula.

Learning how common toddler digestive issues are from Melanie McGrice Accredited Practising Dietitian.
Learning how common toddler digestive issues are from Melanie McGrice Accredited Practising Dietitian.

We had issues with Alexander who had silent reflux when he was born and it lasted up until three months of age. He is still rather particular about being upright and of course cannot drink too much as he will then bring it straight back up.  He was a very fussy baby and I think he had issues with his belly not handling things in the early days.  You can read more about what happened with our little boy here.

After trying to settle the baby and to help him to relieve the wind and the pain in his belly it would all start again. Yes the 3-4 hours it took to settle him then meant that I had to feed him all over again and therefore this horrible issue would come back. I would dread feeding him the bottle due to what would happen afterwards…yes another 4 plus hours with a screaming baby.

Did you know?

“The vast majority (84%) of children 13-24 months have experienced some form of digestive problem with diarrhoea (33%), constipation (30%) and reflux (27%) being among the most common.”

I was wondering what to do. How can I help my little boy feel better and not be in pain? I of course wanted the screaming to stop. Peace and quiet was needed as it would hopefully lead to sleep. Yes the much needed sleep that every new parent needs and wants, but does not get.

I did not know there was goat formula. I also did not know that it could have helped our little baby’s issues. I wish we had tried it earlier.

Oil6 Dairy Goat Formula invited me to learn more about their products for toddlers. I was intrigued and interested due to the difficulties that we had with our son in the early days. I was keen to see if it would help him now as well.

While hearing about the Oli6 Goat Milk I was lucky to be able to drink some lovely coffee and nibble on some yummy snacks. It felt rather calming to be in such relaxing surroundings at The Grounds of the Alexandria and to just sit and be for a bit. Thanks so much for this yummy morning tea it was a great treat.

“Toddlers show their digestive distress by struggling to get to sleep (57%), crying (53%) and just being cranky (36%)

So what are the benefits of Oli6 Dairy Goat Formula?

  • High in vitamins and minerals
  • Calcium for teeth and bones (10% more than cows milk)
  • Vitamin A for vision and sight (46% more than cow’s milk)
  • Magnesium for development and growth (33% more than cow’s milk)
  • Vitamin C (37% more than cow’s milk)
  • Naturally occurring prebiotic oligos may assist digestion. Prebiotic oligosaccharides that naturally occur in goat’s milk may aid beneficial bacteria to help stimulate digestive health and help with the growth of the good gut bacteria (these are the ones we want). Studies have shown that goat’s milk contains up to 250-300mg/l which is six times the concentration than found in cow’s milk.
  • Higher amount of lipids to aid brain development and function
  • Higher proportion of medium chain fatty acids for colonic health and other benefits; more than normal cow’s milk.
  • Gentle on tummies – Has easier to digest fatty acids. The size of the fat globules in goat’s milk are smaller to cow’s milk and therefore has been suggested that this makes it easier to digest.
  • Oli6 is made in Victoria, Australia and adheres to strict Australian guidelines.

Why should you have a formula high in Oligosaccharides?

  • Protect against germs or illness
  • Promote colonic health
  • Help with the maturation of gut and immune system
  • Promote and help with healthy gut microflora ( Prebiotic)
  • Good for brain development
  • Helps with nutrient absorption

Did you know?

“To date, over 37 oligosaccharides have been identified in goat’s milk. Several of these oligosaccharides are structurally similar to those found in human milk and suggested to have similar beneficial effects.”

I had no idea that goat’s milk might be more similar to breast milk, maybe this is why it is easier to digest for babies? It is more like what mum would be giving the baby.

I only thought that goat’s milk might be a solution if you had an allergy or intolerance, not digestive issues. How wrong was I?

Having experienced a baby with digestive issues and being so unhappy I can see how this would be a good thing to try. Anything for a happy baby and happy parents.
