Spider bite means super powers right?

Tuesday the 14th of April was like any other in self-isolation.

Kids playing, kids fighting and causing chaos, hurting each other, and then crying…temper tantrums, then finally happy laughter, then disasters again and then happy playing.

Oh and not to mention the constant mess that is left everywhere and for some mysterious reason it is no one’s fault and not one person left the mess????

Due to the amount of crazy going on I was keen to get all kids to bed to allow me to finally have some quiet time, rest, and do some work that I have been wanting to finish.

At around 6 pm I was getting my little boy dinner in the living room. I then walked back to tackle the mess of toys on the floor.

As I walked back to get started tidying I thought I stepped on glass. It was like a sharp pain stabbed my toe and foot. I was screaming in pain, it was horrible.

I sat down and looked at my foot. No blood. No glass.

Why was my foot swelling up?

Why was my foot burning, stabbing, and throbbing all at the same time???????

Fuck it hurt….it hurt like nothing else I had ever experienced. I could not stop screaming in agony… it was so painful!

I asked Alexander to get Daddy and sisters from the garden to come and help.

He went off and told Daddy mummy had hurt herself. He was such a good boy and came back with Daddy and sisters and was trying to help me feel better, as were the girls.

I explained to hubby through the pain about what had happened. My toe next to my pinky on the right foot was swelling up and on closer inspection looked like it had bite marks on it.

My whole foot was throbbing, burning, and throbbing all at once – and not just located at my toe.

Hubby freaked out and said he thought I had been bitten by a spider.

He asked if I saw anything. I said no, no spider was seen. Also if I do see any spider inside the house it is going to die!

Hubby told the twins to get the crepe bandages so that he could strap my leg and foot up….geez I said we don’t need to do this…He told me that it could be dangerous and proceeded to strap sore leg and foot now.

Hubby asked the twins to look after their brother while he took me off to the emergency department of the local hospital.

I hobbled to the car and we drove off to the hospital. Hubby told me to wait in the car while he told nurses/doctors that I have been bitten by a spider and needed to have a wheelchair to help me as they were all worried about me walking around.

Due to COVID-19 I really didn’t want to go to the hospital. I did not want to be anywhere where there were people who could possibly have the virus and possibly infect me or hubby.

I did think the way the kids were racing around and hurting themselves that they would be in the hospital. However, while sitting in the emergency area of the hospital and dealing with a painful and swollen foot I thought how strange it was me rather than the kids that ended up at the hospital.

The doctor said if the kids got bitten by a redback spider that it could have been deadly and it was lucky it was me instead

Give the kids time they are still trying to injure themselves, you never know we might be there soon. (I really hope not though)

We had to wait in emergency to see if the pain would go away and it didn’t, in fact, it didn’t for a long while and some heavy-duty painkillers.  The crepe bandage was still on my leg and foot, the nurses and doctor hadn’t taken it off as they wanted to see if I had any other symptoms.  Once they remove the bandage I could react badly and need antivenom.

Just between you and me, we were next to an older lady patient, the curtains were drawn and we were in our own personal space. She wasn’t very nice to the staff and at one point she was yelling at them and kicking them. She wanted to be left alone.   It was clear that staff were getting ready to give her the COVID-19 test, and this test means that you need to have a cotton ball-type stick all the way up up to the top of your nose – it really doesn’t look like a comfortable test.

After a while (hours later) they came back to see if they could get a bandage off her and make her more comfortable and she did all the kicking and more horrible things like spitting on them. By this time it was known that she was positive for the virus and they wanted to have her moved from emergency so that they can better care for her.

Hubby and I arrived a bit after 6pm and we were still there at nearly 11pm, so we had been there a while.  Hubby asked me if could I walk on my foot if I had to…I said it is still very sore and painful but could possibly hobble out of the hospital if I had to. He and I were not liking the fact we were next to a person who was spitting and positive for coronavirus and also it didn’t look like I was reacting badly to the spider bite.

I still don’t know what bit me but from the symptoms, the doctor and triage nurse suggested it was a redback spider.

We got the attention of the doctor and she said we can go after she gets me some painkillers and writes up our notes.

The hospital and staff were great and we are so grateful to have such a good health care system.

So at about 11.30 ish, we left the emergency part of the hospital and returned home. My foot has taken well over a week to feel better, it has been swollen, itchy and just not right. Today writing this it is still a little itchy near where I was bitten (the doctor said this is where the blisters were from being bitten with poison). I followed this up with a doctor at the local medical centre and they have prescribed some cream that makes the itch go away – think it has a small percentage of steroids in it, but I don’t care as it was driving me mad at how itchy it was.

So this is my foot when it was very sore and swollen

My swollen foot from being bitten by a spider. Forgive the neglected toenails as I have been exhausted with kids and life and now a sore foot!

Today my foot is not as swollen and not as red

Now my foot is better and less swollen and again forgive me as I have only been able to remove nail polish and not make my feet look prettier.

Now that I’ve been bitten by a spider I’m wondering when my superpowers start to kick in? It worked for Spiderman right? Why not for me too!

Have you been bitten by a spider? Did you see what it was? Was it as painful as I had found?

Spiders Are Not Allowed In Cars!

I had a very interesting car journey last Friday.

The part that was interesting didn’t last long but it was stressful.  It did involve a lot of screaming, swearing and heavy breathing.

I don't think spiders are really scared of me..what about you?
I don’t think spiders are really scared of me..what about you?

Initially, I wasn’t going to rush off in the car…however there was a thunderstorm approaching, black clouds and the twins were, of course, catching the bus home, which of course this meant walking home for part of it.

What was so concerning you ask? Was I hurt? Was I super tired and couldn’t keep my eyes open… NO and NO. Was I sick??? NO

When I opened the door to get in the car there was a HUGE, more like an ENORMOUS spider on the bottom of the driver’s door. Then this horrible looking spider raced or more like sprinted into the car and decided to climb into the area where the pedals of the car live.

SHIT!!!!!! I’M GOING TO PUT MY FEET THERE AND I’M WEARING SANDALS!

Me when I am faced with a scary looking spider
I don’t think spiders are really scared of me..what about you?

I don’t want to be driving and then suddenly this horrible spider walks on me.   Do I get in the car and hope for the best?

I decided to get a stick and see if I could coax this intruder out of my car.

In hindsight using a stick and banging it was not the smartest move to try and get a creature out of my car. I decided to ask a neighbour for some insect spray. I sprayed everywhere I thought this evil devil spider would have hidden.

After spraying the car for a while I decided to take the leap and start driving. I only got a few minutes down the road and then this horrible passenger surfaced on the right side of the driving wheel near the window. I swear it was looking at me with its beady eyes.

Thank goodness this didn't happen to my car..burning down the car/house due to a spider.
Thank goodness this didn’t happen to my car..burning down the car/house due to a spider.

I raced off the road, parked the car, jumped into the passenger seat in record time and magically opened the driver’s door. At this time this unwanted thing in my car was walking across the door. I had enough spray in the can and sprayed the spider as it got close to the edge of the door.

I wanted to make sure that it was going to leave my car. This creature wasn’t invited in my car and personally, I wouldn’t invite a massive scary looking spider into my car ever.

So this creature who invited him or herself into my car finally got out. I slammed the door, jumped back into the driver’s seat and drove off.

While driving I thought that this spider might have super strong legs and still be outside waiting for me. Luckily this wasn’t the case and the visitor that invited themselves into my car was finally gone.

I was still freaked out about the spider car incident.

Spiders should never be in cars!

Are Spiders Plotting To Kill Me?

Spiders are not my favourite, actually I hate them.

Eight furry legs.

A face looking at you.

and I’m sure they are plotting their next move against me!

I know that some spiders are good. These good spiders eat the flies and bugs and don’t hurt you at all.

Huntsman spiders your days are numbered if you enter my house.
Huntsman spiders your days are numbered if you enter my house.

These good spiders are doing their best to help my house be bug free and it must be a HUGE job and under a hostile environment (by hostile, I don’t want them in my house at all!).  I try and remove any spiders whether they are nice or not out of my house.

So as you might have guessed bug spray is my favourite accessory to ensure I am not face to face with a creepy spider or worse.

Lately I have been inundated with spiders and I think it is due to the hot weather. Yep I’m blaming the heatwave yet again. Or it could be the time of year? Who knows but spiders think that they can make my home theirs and that is NOT ON!

The other night I was in the bathroom, I was brushing my teeth. While I was in the bathroom there was a spider that saw me, I saw him/her and it got closer and closer when it did not think I was looking (It must have fancied itself as a ninja spider).

After brushing my teeth and cleaning up I needed to go to the toilet. To get to the toilet I had to walk past this spider that was slowly trying to get closer to me.

Geez is this pay back for killing its family?

I know this sounds crazy but the next time I walk into the bathroom I’m sure I will get attacked by the spiders that are still there.

They are lying in wait to finally give me some of the medicine that I have dished out to them. Would it be poison like the bug spray?

Or will it be an attack of force with as many spiders as possible and they bite me at the same time?

Will hubby find me on the floor of the bathroom and covered in spiders?

Pay back sorted. Human ended, spiders will win. I just hope that this reality never happens. Currently the humans are winning with the war against the spiders trying to camp out in my house without permission. Even if they could speak and asked me if they could stay, the answer would be a very firm and big NO!

Do you have the same thoughts about spiders in your house? If you kill one, will others retaliate?

These are some of the thoughts that go through my brain after an encounter with a spider. What about you? Are you having similar thoughts? Let us know.

Wasps No More

Today the pest man came to make the yard wasp free and of course rid of evil scary looking spiders. It started well, but then it was the search for the invaders nest. They must have known that their minutes were numbered as their nest was so hard to find. The poor man spent ages looking and looking, while more and more wasps circled him and tired to attack him. They are vicious things! I must say while this was happening I kept a watchful eye just in case he did get hurt. The girls and I were watching from the kitchen window. I thought the kids might be interested to see what he did and the fact that soon we would have our garden back.

This simple removal exercise to find the nest did not go well, hours went by and he still could not find it. I finally told him that I don’t care about the Agapanthus or the plants around the area (well one tree I do but it was not near the scene so that was good for it) and told him to just chop them off or start digging. We need to de-wasp and fast! We had not been out in the yard since the incident with Julia it was just not safe. So could not do the washing as I did not want to get attacked either.

Finally the lovely pest man found the nest and it was in an old tree trunk, and I must say that the nest looks nasty and very ugly. So you have been warned. One thing that is of concern is that he mentioned that from the size of the nest it had been there a while. We had never noticed wasps before so it is very strange that they have decided to come out now. Could it be the warmer weather? Or some other reason.

So the pest man was very happy as he found the nest and I asked what would have happened if the nest was not found. He told me that they always find the nest and he was not going to leave until he did. Good news and even better that it all worked out. He sprayed everything again and removed the nest so all is good. There were a few wasps flying around and I hope that they would be gone soon.

I took the kids to the park so they could run around wasp free and once we came home there seemed to be none around, maybe tomorrow there will be no indication that we had wasps at all?

I must say that this was a big drama and we did not need the expense, but who can have wasps in the garden threatening your every move. It is just the right time to be out and about this long weekend with one less pest in the garden, well maybe more as spiders are gone as well. I just wish that it would help with the mozzies and an annoying possum.
