What was wrong with the Milk????

Hubby and I have been on the hunt for years for milk that tasted like it did when we were little. Creamy and not watery. For as long as I can remember milk has not tasted right. So whenever there is a new brand on the market we purchase it in the hope that it might be like what we remembered milk tasted like.

I finally found a milk that has cream on top of the lid… wow that never happens! It tastes a little better than the other brands and if shaken all the cream gets mixed up and all is good. However the twins have never experienced cream on top or in milk. They have had milk where it is all mixed in.

The creamy milk with the cream on top.... YUM!
The creamy milk with the cream on top…. YUM!

One morning the kids decided to make their own breakfast. Yes amazing actually. They usually wake me up to do this task. I am trying to tell them they can do it themselves.

Oh well…… I was half asleep lying in bed and was very happy they were showing independence and doing it themselves. They were making their usual meal of Weet-Bix. They got to the milk part and poured it in the bowls. And then I heard….

“What is that???” “There is something in the milk! It does not look good. I think we need to chuck it out… It has gone bad!”

I got up and so did hubby. I told him about the milk issue that I was overhearing. He decided to go and have a chat with the girls and explain about cream and the milk. He explained that the milk just needs a good shake to mix the cream in and it is not bad just that it the cream is on the top of the milk. He also explained that you can mix it in or just eat it and it is all good. They did not look convinced.

Even this morning after a good shake of the milk and adding it to the Weet-Bix this morning one kid is still not keen on this type of milk. Maybe I need to get the other stuff just for them so they don’t complain? I was hoping it would not be an issue after the talk from daddy and us showing the twins that it is all good and fine to drink.

Have had something like this happen with your kids. I do understand that if they have never seen it before it might be a bit weird and they were wary of it, especially when you have never had it before. Leave a comment and let us know what has happened at your house.

I also think that they reacted just the right way. If in doubt get rid of it, it might be dangerous or make you sick. They reacted on instinct and went for survival. Although their breakfast of that day ended up in the bin I hope that we have shown them that milk with a bit of cream is okay to drink and will not kill you.

The Hysterical Weet-Bix Meltdown!

I was busy, well I was trying to be.

Every 2 seconds I was being interrupted with:

“Mummy can you come here?”

OR

“Mummy can you come and watch this show with us?”

AND,

“Mummy can I show you something?”

NO YOU CAN’T!

I AM TRYING TO WORK ON SOMETHING THAT IS RATHER IMPORTANT AND NEED TO CONCENTRATE! CAN DADDY HELP YOU?

I told hubby before being bothered that he had to sort dinner and everything else. He was happy to do it as I was busy. Great I thought, until the Weet-Bix meltdown began.

For the last couple of days the kids have not been feeling well, and one is coughing and had a slight temperature. The other had a bit of a temperature also, but it was nothing to worry about. So we did the normal fluids, painkillers, kisses and cuddles and that was it.

The kids of course requested to have Weet-Bix for dinner. We thought fine, they are not well and at least they are eating something.

When the twins are feeling unwell they like to have Weet-Bix for dinner. Yes this could be a parenting fail. But I think if they are sick, it is better that they eat something than nothing.

Just to explain: I’m the mum who gets the interest of the worried doctor due to kids looking thin and underweight. My kids have always been at the bottom 3rd percentile on the graph in the blue book you get when you have a baby.

I know my kids are fuss pots with eating, however they were on track for their milestones and have been ahead for some of them. This was good as one doctor we saw in the early days was convinced the twins might be delayed, so wonderful this was not to be.

So as you now understand if my fussy eaters, when sick desire Weet-Bix, we let them.

Hubby prepared the Weet-Bix but was not prepared for the outcome.

This is how it all unfolded:

Hubby brings Weet-bix to children.

One kid takes a look at the Weet-Bix and starts screaming and crying.

She says, “That is not how you make Weet-Bix!!!!” “Mummy does not make it like this!”

This child was so upset and annoyed by the way the Weet-Bix was, she had to physically remove herself away from the food and could not touch it as she was in such hysterics.

Not the way Weet-Bix should be! Daddy why did you do this she said!
Not the way Weet-Bix should be! Daddy why did you do this she said!

Hubby also got told:

  • “How could you?”
  • “That’s not how you do it!
  • This is not correct!”

All of this was accompanied by waving of arms, crying and putting hands on face in major disappointment.

Due to hubby’s loss at what the issue was, and of course dealing with a traumatised child, I piped in and said,

“If you don’t like it, you can fix it. Go to the kitchen and do it the way you like it”

She took the matter into her own hands, left the room and went to the kitchen.

She returned with a bowl of Weet-Bix created in the way she likes and wanted in the first place.

Weet-bix made by the child in question and just the way she likes it!

Daddy said that she reacted like he had given her a pooh sandwich.

Have you ever done something for the kids to have a hysterical reaction to what you did?

What was the thing that made the child/children so upset? Was it as simple as not organising the Weet-Bix like the child wanted?

Note: Daddy put the flakes of Weet-Bix in the bowl as well as the last biscuits. He was being thrifty and good to use every last part of the box. However if you use too much of the end flaky bits it makes it clump and just be a big mess. I think that this is what the issue was.

Icy Shower

Today it has been freezing! Yesterday there was warmth in the air and a hint of what is to come. Summer and holidays! However today it seems like we have hit another cold snap. Black dark clouds hovered over us after I picked up the girls from school. We had to get Weet-Bix from the store or else there would be issues in the morning and when we exited the skies errupted with hail. Little balls of ice, and it bucketed down. It did not last for long.

Did you get a big down pour of rain? Was it hail? I have heard some people got snow. Yes snow! I suppose that is no surprise. Two years ago in October we got the biggest dump of snow in ten years here. So anything is possible. Snow in Spring. Hail in spring. Maybe it might happen in summer? Only time will tell.

The only thing that made it all worth it was that the store had Weet-Bix. Imagine making your way in a hail storm to find they had none.

It has been snowing. See the article from the Sydney Morning Herald.

Comfort Food

One of my girls has been ill. Tonsillitis again! Not good at all. I have had the fevers, crying and upsets all weekend and of course yesterday. Yesterday was Monday and she should have been in pre-school, however she was being comforted by yours truly. Hugs, cuddles, and kisses were in order.

I got an appointment at the doctors and she is now on antibiotics and last night did not have a fever. Today seems much better, as she is running and telling jokes. The doctor said that once she does not have a temperature she should be fine for school, so with that advice both kids are at pre-school today, and I am one happy mummy.

It is good that she is on the mend and becoming her old self. One thing that surprised me was that this child has had tonsillitis four times in the last six months. The doctor I saw was new, but he suggested this was not good and gave me a referral to a surgeon so that she can get them removed. I did explain that I got mine out when I was three, my husband does not have his nor does the girls grandfather. Could be a family thing.

We might see how it goes…not sure but she might need to have them out in the future.  She did not like hearing this. I ended up calming her down and told her that it will all be o.k.

While looking after my unwell little girl, it got me thinking… What is the food that gives you comfort when you are unwell? My mum used to make me Vegemite toast and a glass of Milo to make me feel better. If not toast, a jaffle or pressed sandwich with cheese and Vegemite. When I am unwell or not feeling the best I go back to that food.

My little girl ended up eating Weet-Bix as I think it was easier on her throat. Also as she was sick she was not that hungry so it was best to feed her something.

What are your kids favourite comfort foods? What are yours?
