Trapped -The Art Heist

Games that make you think and solve problems are fun, a game that means you can only leave the room when you have the right pin code to open the door is even better.

TRAPPED Escape Room Games allow you to turn “ANY room into a family-friendly escape-room adventure where you move around the room actively solving puzzles.”

We have never played an escape room game so as you can imagine the kids and I were rather excited.

I loved the fact that it was a game that made the kids think and is engaged, plus not staring at a screen for a while.

“Each pack contains everything you need to create your very own escape room in your own home. Wall posters, cards to display, hangers for door handles, ID cards, and secret envelopes are just some of the things you might find inside the pack along with clues to solve and awesome puzzles to crack.”

All the posters, clues and tools needed to crack the puzzles and solve the mystery.

Setting up the game

I put all the contents of the game onto the floor of the girl’s room. I then proceeded to read the instructions to understand what I needed to do. There are a lot of little clue cards and a few posters that need to be stuck around the room, on each card/poster it says where you should put them. Some will say stick on the wall and others say they should be near the exit and so on.

Fun playing the game and solving puzzles.

The pack comes with a book of clues and a code cracker (this is a cardboard cover that allows certain words to be read and others not. You need this when you get asked to read a clue). We did have some interference from a four-year-old who tried to scrunch and rip the code cracker but this was foiled by mummy distracting him and allowing sisters and their mate to play their mystery game.

The instructions didn’t give a great deal of information. I wanted to know if we had to put all cards out. Do the clues on the back of the work passes get read at any time or will that spoil the game if it happens earlier? The mystery envelope with the clues to the code that unlocks the door was already organised so I had no idea what was in there.

If the kids did decide to play in teams how do they negotiate time with the clue book and code cracker? This might prove difficult. Oh well, currently it was just the girls and their mate, so a total of 3 kids originally I was playing but I had to spend time distracting the four-year-old so that he would leave the older kids alone to solve the puzzles.

Cracking the code

Initial thoughts of the game

At first, we didn’t really know what we were doing. The kids and I were in teams. This was proving hard due to not having time at the clue book and one team saying that what they were looking at was super important.

It was then decided that they would work as one group and not have teams. It was a bit confusing about picking clues to work on. I suggested to the kids that they pick one clue and solve it and then go from there. I later found out that they took all the clues off the wall and solved them together, but also one at a time.

I thought the kids might solve the game quickly but it was a good couple of hours before girls and their friends emerged telling me that they had solved the puzzle and finally had the code to leave their room.

What did we think?

I think the game was a lot of fun and definitely worth playing. It was great to see the kids get so involved, help each other, and solve puzzles by finding clues. I believe that games that get kids thinking and away from screens are best.

This is how long the kids were playing the game for

Recommendations

I do have a few thoughts to make Trapped The Art Heist even better.
When you have all the clues and materials ready to set up for the game, I would recommend having a few options for how you can set it up. It would be more like a chose-your-own adventure. You pick scenarios A, B, C, or D. These different options give you different clues in the room and different answers in the envelope when you finish. So if you pick Scenario B, you only put these clues up throughout the room. The posters might remain the same, and the mystery envelope would be different for each scenario that reveals the winners and the secret code.

The girls told me that no matter which way they went the answer to the puzzle was the same.

Great gift/party game

The kids really enjoyed this game and they were playing it for nearly 2 hours! We did thoroughly enjoy this game and it is a great gift or party game. If you are wanting a fun game for the family this Christmas Trapped Escape game would be a good one to try.

The girls and I were all invited by Winning Moves to test out some new games. Winning Moves aims to get kids away from screens and playing more games. This is a huge win if you ask me. Games allow children to think strategically, learn new things and to play with others. It is also great that kids are not just staring at a screen and actually interacting with each other.

What Games did we try out?

The twins favourite game was Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire Top Trumps

How do you play the games?

Top Trumps Match

Top Trumps Match is a matching game like the name suggests.

To start the game you pull out the square on the top of the game board. This is where you start. Each player takes a turn to remove a square and add a square anywhere on the board.

You work away and try to match one character that you have chosen. If you get presented with a square without your character you will have to change which character for matching.

You need to get five of each character in a line. This line could be horizontal, vertical or anywhere. As long as there is five of the same character in one line you win.

However, that win might be short-lived. In the game you have cards. These cards sit on the top of the match carry case.

Each player gets two cards each and they are placed face down in front of each player. Once one player yells ‘Match!’ Each player then turns over their two cards.

If the other player has the same character as the player that yelled “Match!” they can take the win. If they don’t and the winner who yelled “Match” has the character they are safe. If no one has the character then you are still safe.

Top Trumps

Top Trumps is a card game.

You get presented with all the characters from a film or topic and have to challenge other players with the qualities of the character.

The twins played the Harry Potter Top Trump and had a lot of fun.

The characters have qualities like magic, cunning, courage, wisdom and temper. Each player picks the higher number of one of the qualities and then ask others what their number for this quality is.

If you have the highest number of this quality you collect the cards with the lower number of all other players.

The winner of the game is the one that has all the cards.

Happy due to a winning streak. The kid on the right lost her cards and it was all down to her sister.

As you might sense the twins are keen fans of Harry Potter and therefore played these games more than the other ones. There were plenty of other games to choose from and not just ones with Harry Potter.

Other themed games were:

  • There is Disney Movies (we did play a bit of this one and soon realised that we have watched all the Disney movies too many times. We knew nearly all the answers and without looking at the card)
  • Marvel
  • Superheroes
  • Farm animals
  • Star Wars
  • Dinosaurs
  • Space
  • Australia
  • Pixar Cars
  • Bugs
  • DC Comics
  • Disney’s Frozen
  • Minions
  • Shopkins
  • Transformers
  • And much more!

3 years and beyond Potty Training Pre-School

Social butterflies

Saturday the 25th was a big day; the girls had two parties to attend:

1. A birthday party for a boy at pre-school.

2. A goodbye party for their mate Mia, who is living to live in Germany.

The girls were very excited and I realised that the centre of the universe is going to be Blackheath or at least close to it for a while. Both parties were in Blackheath and as the girls had now started school in Blackheath this is probably going to be more frequent. That is fine with us, however it was just strange that the two events were on the same day. We are never that busy really and both parties were for the girls not us, us parents were just the transport.

It was sad that their good friend Mia was leaving and it was nice that she came along to the birthday party as well. All the kids go to the same pre-school.  The girls had an excellent time at the birthday party, they loved decorating their cupcakes and playing games with the other children. We filled out Mia’s friendship book and hope that we get a letter from her soon.

After the birthday party we all went to get some lunch, ended up getting fish and chips and going to our land to have a picnic. So that was impressive. After we went home had a quick rest, and then off to the next party. The girls made a necklace and bracelet for Mia. It had her name and theirs on the necklace with hearts and the bracelet had just Mia’s name.  Very cute and they were very proud to show Mia their handy work.

We stayed for a while at the goodbye party; however the girls were so tired, ended up falling over to often and getting upset. Happens a lot when they are tired, both the girls did not want to go, but we had to they were exhausted. So we said our goodbyes and made our way home. Gave them some dinner, and milk, and off to bed. We did not hear any noise out of their room after we put them to bed, very tired indeed.

The girls were very good and managed to have the whole day out without nappies and had no accidents, aside from rest time.

Today we went to kids kingdom and the girls for the first time went there without nappies. Lillian told me she needed to go to the toilet and I took her. She was great and very grown up. I asked Julia if she needed to go, she said no. After the kids played, we went off to Woolies at Leura to get some shopping. We were at the checkout waiting to pay and Julia said, “I need to go to the toilet mummy”, I rushed to the end of the shops, and the toilet had a queue. I then went to the other toilet and there was a queue there as well. I asked Julia if she could hang on. She said, “Yes mummy”. I was hoping that she could and we would not have an accident. The lady in front of me offered for us to go first, I thanked her as it was very nice of her to offer. Julia was good, and hung on until we got to the toilet. Clever girl, and then we washed hands and headed off to find daddy and get the shopping to the car.

I am very impressed with the girls and not wearing nappies anymore. I think they understand that they need to hold on and have the ability to do so more now.  I am just an impressed mummy at such a wonderful thing, maybe the end of nappies soon?

Daddy, the girls and I danced to music, they played with their doctors kit (ended up taking the doctors kit to bed, plus a teapot, in case they need to make some tea), and then they were off to bed.

Lunches are made for school tomorrow and have a house to get cleaner or at least tidier tomorrow as well. What have your social butterflies been up to? Is school filling your social calendar with parties? I think that we will have more functions to go to, which is good. Hopefully we will expand our network and meet more people.
