Down in the Dumps

I’m a bit down in the dumps. I was all set to purchase a ticket to go to Problogger in August but that has been put on hold. Why you ask? Well it is all about finances. Hubby has been on a long contract with his work and has been told that he will be only renewed till the end of July. It is not only the fact that I was looking forward to taking the family to the Gold Coast again, and learning more about the business of blogging, it has implications for the rest of our life. Paying bills and keeping a roof over our head is more important than a blog conference. Although I know that is true I am sad to not be able to go this year.

Do you have plans to do things and then unforeseen events throw a spanner in the works? I was thinking of making a slick presentation to organisations for sponsorship but as tickets go on sale Monday (Yes Monday the 3rd of March tickets go on sale! I was so close to getting one) I don’t think I have time. I could buy a ticket and then work on the other variables but have decided against it. I don’t want the stress and worry if things don’t work out.  Do you do this to yourself? Think if I just got the ticket, then all the other parts will fall into place? I have been thinking like that, but I need to snap out of it.

I was lucky to go to Problogger last year. 1stAvailable.com.au ran a competition and the first prize was travel to the Gold Coast and a ticket to the Problogger Conference. I won this competition and it was joy to be there and take the family on a holiday to experience my much beloved Queensland (I grew up in Queensland and miss it so much, I dream of taking the kids there again. Especially where I grew up Hervey Bay and Fraser Island)

After I dropped the kids off at school I drove to the post office. I sat in the car just thinking about it all for a while. It is rainy here and just a bit miserable like my mood. I decided that it is not the end of the world, I am grateful that we have our house, our health, the kids are happy and content and that we are together and happy. Like everyone more money would help the situation and of course allow us to do more, but we are doing o.k. There are others in the world that have it tougher than I do and I just need to be thankful for what I have already.

Do you catch yourself thinking that you are worse off for not going to something? I sometimes do, but it is really not a major issue. It would be nice, and wonderful but it is not the end of the world.

Hubby is hoping that things get sorted out before the end of July and I am trying to earn money to help out. I will be adding things to the blog that you can download at a cheap cost (I want to keep things reasonable so that it is available for all)  and also have some freebies that you can use as well. So stay tuned for that.

At the end of the day, I am still working at putting last years learning’s into action. I am hoping that I can purchase a virtual ticket and this will allow me to have access to the talks and audio at the conference.

What are you grumpy about currently? Has realising that you are blessed with things already helped you deal with not going to something you desperately wanted to go to? I am feeling much better about the decision to not go now, thinking about what I have and feeling grateful for has helped so much. Send in your comments.

Update: I have decided to email some brands and agencies that I have worked with before. Why not see what happens. I can offer advertising, sponsored posts, updates while at the conference, tweeting and updates on all social media, showcasing the use of your product or service, and much more! Contact me if you are interested.

Problogger 2013 Takeaways

At Tsh Oxenreider's talk on Day 2
At Tsh Oxenreider’s talk on Day 2

Problogger was exactly what I thought it would be like, awesome! I learned so much, met wonderful people and overcame my fears of saying hi to some well known, very established bloggers. As my hubby reminded me, they are just like me, however the only difference is they have done it a bit longer.

I was super lucky to have been able to attend this conference and it would not have happened without winning the 1stAvailable.com.au blogging contest, so thanks again to the lovely team at 1stAvailable for making it all happen. I do attribute a lot of things to luck, maybe I need to adjust my thinking and believe it was skill. At the end of the day I felt blessed and amazed to be attending the event as at the same time last year, I was stomping around upset that I would never attend such event and just having a bad time of it all.

This bad time could be due to kids not listening, feeling like the blog was not going anywhere, but felt that it would be a nice goal to attend one day. I must have put my thoughts out into the universe and the universe rewarded me this year. I did catch myself wanting to pinch myself that I was actually on the Gold Coast and about to hear such vibrant people like Trey Ratcliff, Amy Porterfield, Darren RouseTsh Oxenreider, Clare Bowditch, and Bernadette Jiwa speak.

Have you got mad about something but really you are just jealous or annoyed due to really wanting to go but can’t. Then it finally happens and it seems very surreal. If so I know how you feel?

So what was the conference like? Is it worth it?

Yes the conference is well worth every cent and effort made to attend. The talks were inspiring, the information was helpful and it opened my brain to do things a little differently on the blog. The QT on the Gold Coast where the conference was held was amazing, it is quirky, and has a 1960’s funky vibe. The food was so yummy, dining at Bazaar was a magical and a relaxing experience. Breakfast was the same, so much to choose from, that said the catering for the conference was wonderful and we even got served by flight attendants from Virgin Australia as they were one of the major sponsors. It did take me a moment to realize why they were there after leaving a very engrossing talk.

What were the key messages and takeaways?

  • Image is key, make sure that you have an image for everything
  • Facebook is where to market yourself
  • Make sure that you have a good cover image for Facebook that has what you do clearly visible
  • Your profile image should be the same across all your social sites (need to fix up one I think)
  • Focus on telling a story and adding personality into your brand
  • Tsh was very inspiring with ways to brainstorm and think of what to write about. I do have a million and one ideas, however I don’t write them down or remember them all. She was very clear about how to link things and suggested creating a series
  • If they don’t fit your brand, what could you do with the content? Does it belong on another blog or site?
  • Amy was amazing with all the secrets she shared about Facebook marketing, creating Post Page Ads is one thing I did not know about. Will find out more when I go through more notes
  • What personality type are you? Are you a morning person or is it evenings? Figure out how you work best and go with that.
  • Treat the blog as a business from day 1, this way you will be more focused and organize it as such. Writing and organizing time will not be so bad if you do this from the start. I need to do more of this.
  • Trey showed me that looking the world differently is o.k and one key quote he said about his critics is “fight back with awesome”, I am going to do this, but not sure about critics. I will just assume I have none and power along with awesomeness.Darren's Keynote Presentation

Darren’s Keynote Presentation

  • Clare was amazing and showed me that I have so much in my head that I want to be, I just need to follow my calling and go with it. Focus on what makes me happy. So I will do that. I normally have to do things for others, but due to kids and creating a role for myself at home with the blog and soon to be social media manager it is slowly happening. Following my bliss.
  • Don’t give up with your blog. All the speakers at one time or another was going to throw in the towel and they kept at it, success was just around the corner.

I now want to go next year. Keen to find out where the conference will be and see if it is possible for 2014.

If you were unable to attend the conference, the virtual ticket is still available, this gives you access to all the talks – audio and presentations that we saw over the 2 days. As said it was great and a lot of information to digest. Over 30 hours of learning that will help your business and grow your blog.  If you do wish to look at and purchase the virtual ticket. Click on the link on the to right of the blog website, you can learn more and purchase from here. Enjoy, and get ready to be inspired!

What did you think of the conference if you went? Have you attended via the virtual ticket? Are you going to go next year?

Gold Coast Trip

Tuesday night we got a hotel in the city so we could be closer to the airport rather than staying at home and having to have a 3am wake up call to enable us to get a 10.10am flight. So rather than waking at 3am we all woke at 6am so better all round really.

The kids loved staying at a hotel the night before our trip actually happened, it was an extra treat. We got up and and I got the kids organised as we were all still very sleepy as Tuesday was a big day and the kids did stay up very late and therefore were extremely sleepy the next day.

All of us managed to get dressed and sorted and we got our bags and put them in car, and we were headed off to the long term parking, so all on time and schedule. Hubby was happy about this.

We got to the airport early and we all looked around, we had breakfast although there was a big fuss due to not having WeetBix, one kid had pancakes and the other had apple. Not great but better than nothing. Maybe they can have WeetBix for breakfast today? Crossing fingers and toes the hotel has this available.

After we had exhausted our adventure walk around the domestic airport we went to where our gate was for our plane and hung around there for a while. Kids were getting a bit bored so we went and looked at some more planes.

Yes we are now on the plane! We are all excited and kids even more so! I love take off.

The flight was fun, the girls had activity books that grandma gave them so they would have something to do while on the plane. We also made sure that they had their water bottle and teddy to cuddle for the trip.

At about 20mins out of landing the girls started asking, “Are we there yet?”, “When are we going to land?” Gosh I did not know that these questions would still happen in the air? Oh well, at least it was not long to go.

We finally landed and got our bags very quickly and then onto the hire car.

We got to the hotel, the QT Gold Coast and it is just fab, very quirky and funky. Just lovely and what we needed. The room is a lovely king suite with ocean views, love it and want to stay here forever!

Off to Sand and Sea

I’m a very lucky lady indeed. I was fortunate to win a blogging competition and thanks to 1stAvailable.com.au we are all off to the Gold Coast for a family holiday. Well, part of it is a holiday and the other part is that I am finally attending Problogger 2013, yes my first and much anticipated blogging conference. I cannot wait!

The twins have been on a plane before but don’t remember due to being three months old at the time. This time they will remember and enjoy the whole experience. While at the Gold Coast my little girls will be turning five and they are super excited to be going to the beach for their birthday. Yes what a great mummy I am….well I am taking the thanks for this one, why not, right?

Do your kids jet off for holidays? Have they been well behaved on planes or has it been a bad experience. Flying to the Gold Coast is a small flight and we will only be in the air for about an hour and half. It will not be like we are flying to America or any other greater distance, so at least that is a plus.

I am keen to see how they like the airport, the plane and the whole experience. Do you have tips and tricks to help travelling with kids? Why not send them in. Many families have planned or are about to plan their summer travels so it might be a good time to find out some key things to do or to not do.

Excitement at our house is growing day by day. Our tickets for travel have been booked, accommodation sorted, and car organised. Now need to make sure that I have adequate professional clothing for the conference and nice summer gear for all to maximise our time in sunny Queensland.

Any advice for what to wear at a blogging conference send them in. I am aiming for professional but casual, also it needs to be comfortable and something that has natural fabric so does not heat up too much. Maybe a dress, or something simple so that I can just slip it on.

As a former Queenslander I am keen to be on a beach in the sun and to just relax for a bit. Bring it on.   Currently the Blue Mountains is very cold, windy and just icy so a warm climate would be welcome and luxury.

One glitch that has reared its head is sickness. I am ill and now have one child sick with tonsillitis again…let’s hope that the other does not get ill. We only have two weeks to be all better before we jet off. So off to the doctors for sick kid today and to make sure that we all stay well for the weeks ahead. Crossing fingers and toes that we all o.k for our trip.

Have you planned your summer holidays yet? If so are you getting excited about it? My girls are telling everyone and are so happy that we are off somewhere different.

Birthday Surprises Sorted

Bulls Eye from Toy Story
Bulls Eye from Toy Story

I had to take the kids to the shop to get their mate a birthday present for his birthday party next week. While we were there both girls would not take their hands off toy story dolls, I have managed to get them some toy story plush dolls for their birthday however the ones in the shop were great, taller, spoke and were much more expensive, $69 each to be exact. I could not afford to get each kid a doll each and then all the stuff that came with them so I found the next best thing, Ebay and it was all sorted.

I was so happy that they wanted the dolls and hope they like the ones I have organized for them, I have got all the characters, Woody, Jessie, Buzz Lightyear, and Bulls Eye the horse.   Before I got the Ebay toy story dolls I sourced Bulls Eye the horse from Target but I got 2 horses so that each child can have a character on a horse, now all characters will have a horse so has worked out well and has not cost the earth. I feel very proud of my purchase and the fact it was not as expensive as all the stores were selling them for. Is it strange to want to be super proud of this shopping purchase, and skill to find a cheaper price? Oh well, I am! I am sure this happens to others as well not just me. Let me know if you feel like this once you organise something wonderful.

While at playgroup yesterday the kids were playing with Lego and asking about the one that they wanted (Lego Friends), I told them if they are good they might get it but it is very expensive so probably not right away. This was met with upset faces, and maybe at Christmas mummy???? Little do they know is that we have organised (we got them a big set of Lego Friends) what they want but the family is all going to put in for it so not to make so expensive for one person. They will be so excited to find that they are getting things they would like and I must say they are to be very spoilt as they are getting what they have asked for, not spoilt as we are not getting many things, just a few.

Since I was very lucky to win the blogging competition from 1stAvailable.com.au I am able to take the kids to the Gold Coast for their birthday so we are not spending a lot here to maximize our trip in September.

Have you had moments in the shop where your kid/kids want the toy that you have already arranged for their birthday or Christmas? Have you had a secret smile on your face as you are getting excited to see their reaction, I know I am!

I am going to take the plush toys with us on our trip as the kids will celebrate their actual birthday while we are away. This way they will squish in the bag fine and they can have them to play with in the hotel room and on the way home from our trip. Plus it will be nice to give them an actual present on their real day.

What things have you organised secretly for your little ones?
