Independent Girls

by

My girls could not wait for mummy to finally get out of bed and took matters into their own hands. They were hungry and both decided to get their own breakfast ready. They managed to get the weetbix box out which is a heavy thing to lift, got the milk out of the fridge, bowls, and spoons.

I am very proud indeed as this means that they are doing it all themselves. What a great achievement to get your own breakfast.

Talking about independence, the girls especially Lillian have been wanting to cook and to help prepare meals. I think this is great, however sometimes hard due to the crowding near the stove top. I have to make sure that they are further away so that both kids are safe. The other night, Lillian and Julia wanted to chop up the beans and the bok choy for mummy and daddies dinner.

The girls were supervised at all times and if they got any where near their fingers or danger was around I stopped what they were doing. As they go to a Montessori pre-school practical life skills are taught and they have kids do things like this themselves. Not sure if it is with what we have at home, but they encourage the children to be independent. We are trying to do that at home, and of course as said if there is danger we stop things immediately.

Do your kids help you in the kitchen? What are they doing when they do? Have they organised their own breakfast all by themself or do they still need help? Was there any accidents that are funny and you would like to share? Send in your comments.
